[Q] Rooted EVO needs help after new kernel flashed.

I rooted my HTC EVO, then wanted a new kernel for better battery, wanted the new gingerbread ROM too but after I rooted, I deleted a few unwanted, stock apps. After I did this, I started to get a lot of force close messages. Certain apps won't even open. So I tried to unzip a new kernel and I wiped all my data from the hboot. Now it starts up, will go to locked home screen. I try to unlock it, it's the white htc screen then loads into the set up (i.e. keyboard usage, etc) and in the last step a force close message pops up then goes through the whole scenario again. Now I want to just put a whole new system on so I can have my evo back. HELP?

Download the rom, kernel, and Gapps (http://www.goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/) on your computer. Boot into recovery. I don't use Clockwork, and I'm assuming you rooted with Unrevoked, so that's probably the recovery you have, but try to find the option to mount your SD card via USB, and move the files to your SD card. Do not unzip them. They must be .zip files. Unmount your SD card, wipe your data, wipe your cache, wipe your Dalvik cache, repeat all the wipes at least one more time, then flash the .zips in this order: 1. ROM 2. Gapps 3. kernel. Then reboot, and you should have a working system.

If you use ROM Manager and created a backup then you could flash (install) the OTA ROM Sprint sent out a few months back. This OTA ROM will be for the Rooted evo, so you won't lose root. Go to youtube.com and search this, "How to install new Sprint Htc Evo OTA 3.29.651.5 and keep root." In his comments he'll provide the link to that zip file and you can flash it from the recovery mode. Make sure you wipe the dalvik/cache and then flash zip file from sd card. It will appear to look like your initial problem but it will get passed the white htc screen. You could turn it off and turn it on again if HTC screen stays longer than 10 min. Once the ROM kicks in, you'll notice its stripped of all your cusomizations. If you used rom manager to back up your ROM then redownload ROM manager from market and the superuser app that came with the OTA zip file will allow ROM manager to run. At that point select manager and restore backups from ROM manager and select your backup and it should put you back to where you were prior to the problem.
Sorry so long, but I'm very detailed and don't want to assume you know what I'm talking about.
P.S. similar situation happened to me yesterday I fixed my issue like described above.
Another Thing haha, don't delete your stock apps just freeze them using Titanium backup. Freezing does the same thing for battery life. You wont see them in app drawer and they wont run in background.

Installing new rom/firmware

I'm trying to figure out the best way to install a new rom/firmware. Here is the process I have been using to date but I'm sure there must be easier way then doing all this.
1. Reinstall firmware/rom.
2. Check recovery to see if it still works. If it doesn't reinstall it.
3. Install su through recovery if necessary.
4. Install a file manager if necessary.
5. Install titanium backup.
6. Install Apps2SD
7. Install 10 apps at a time (so memory doesn't fill up) then use apps2sd to link to SD card.
8. Check to see if everything is running smoothly. If it's not do a wipe at this point and go back to step 4.
This is a time consuming process and I'm looking for ways to improve the process. Especially at step 7. It takes forever to load the apps then link2sd. Is there another way to do this part so memory doesn't fill up? Even when I check the option to auto link it doesn't auto link when installing apps from titanium.
I don't use nandroid. I've tried it in the past and the restoration usually ends up being pretty buggy. I've spoken to a few friends and they don't do it either. i'm not sure if it's possible that I will brick my phone without doing a nandroid backup but I haven't yet.

It said with that we can change the notification bar colour... Tried with it and rebooted the phone,
and it doesn't boot up now... Pls help me, when tried to reflash it with the service center, they
are responding negative that they couldn't install the software... Can you pls guide me to install the
stock rom back... bcoz the boot screen and all is working perfectly... pls help me out sir...

[Q] Ringtones gone....

First post... let me itroduce myself first.
I'm Stu....I've been lurking here for years and finally unlocked my first phone!
I'm currently using the SideKick4g, and this foru was a HUGE help in the unlocking process. Thanks!!!
I think I may have gotten a little crazy with the deleting, however. Everything is running fine at this point other than when I try to change ring/notification settings. Trying to access things gives me a force close every time.
I'm guessing I deleted something crucial. Anybody know what it may have been and how I can go about fixing this and/or getting around the situation? Will a simple program such as ringdroid replace whatever I got rid of? Shold I just flash a custom ROM?

Let me add that I rooted with SuperOneClick, and used RootExplorer for ditching my bloatware. Hope that helps a little!

What did you remove? Ringtones are stored in /system/media/, do they just not show up when trying to set it, or does something else happens? Are you missing your stock ringtones, or just your custom ones?

When I go to settings>sound...selecting eithr phone ringtone or notification ringtone causes my force close.
I think maybe I deleted my system/media thinking it was the stock media player
Not that I'm too bummed about it. The stock rings are all just crappy versions of the "T-jingle".

Well, looks like you took a risk and it came back to bite you. Reflash your ROM and try again.

Well...there's where the problem lies. I've never flashed a ROM. I'm sure I can handle it....just never done it.
And if I do need to flash a new ROM anyways, I feel like I should just flash a custom ROM. The gingerclone looks pretty nice. Does this delete my original ROM all together in the process? Are custom ROMs free of bloat?

That will wipe everything, so you should make a backup beforehand. yes, custom roms are almost always free of bloat, GingerClonev2 is only 124MB, where the stock rom is over 200MB. There are a few issues we're still working out, but it's pretty steady. otherwise, Teddy is releasing an update to an older ROM sometime soon as well, so I'd be on the lookout for that.

Okay cool. I'm gonna do some quick research and figure out how to do this.
What's the best way to save my original ROM to my desktop on my computer?
I'm just worried about killing my phone completely at this point.....

If you have CWM, use the backup menu, which uses Nandroid to backup everything by dumping everything on your phone into images. This all dumps onto your SDcard in the clockworkmod folder.
You can't brick your phone using CWM, you can only do that using ODIN, and only if you're not following directions/being intentionally stupid

Once the CWM/ROM manager has backed everything up....i should be able to copy the backup to my desktop? same thing with installing a new ROM

Yeah, copy the clockworkmod folder from your sdcard to your desktop, that'll copy everything off. I wouldn't suggest Rom Manager, many people have problems with that CWM. Look in the Dev forum for the CWM thread, and use that one.

In recovery mode, there should be a backup and restore menu. use the backup option, and then copy the clockworkmod folder from your sdcard to your desktop. that's your backup.

Okay. I plugged in my phone to the computer, and dragged a copy of the entire clockworkmod folder to my desktop.
Gingerclone is downloaded. Drag it to my SD? anywhere specific? or just on it?
On my desktop now is: folder/download, .recoverychecpoint(1KB), .salted_hash(1KB), .settings(1KB), and .settings2(1KB)

I lost rom manager/root explorer.
After clearing stuff out and rebooting...it rebooted to the original rom with none of my added apps.
Can't download anything either at this point.

Download manager keeps stopping and forces closed.
I reboot into recovery...and my options are:
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
If I try to reinstall packages, I get" E: failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip(no such file or directory)
E: signature verification failed.
I'm in over my head now. Anyone out there maybe wanna help walk me thorough this on AIM or google chat or anything?

I tried flashing yours....but nothing. It's on my SD card right now
It just boots up to the original sidekick home/os.

Edit: actually what it sounds like you did was something similiar to what i did with a samsung galaxy s i deleted a bunch of apps and the i did a data wipe and factory restore without flashing my custom firmware through cwm and when it factory resetted it was real buggy from all the missing apps so u will have to odin

Rom manager Backup of stock rom

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I have rooted my infuse, I used the one click root method. I installed Ti backup and performed a backup of all my apps. I then downloaded Rom Manager latest version off the market. I told it to flash the galaxy i9000 information as thats what i had read was required. Now when I go to make a backup of my rom as it is, it restarts boots into recovery, all the top lettering is blue and says android system recovery, then it shows the options of reboot, reinstall packages,delete all user data, delete cache data, and format internal sd card.
below all this in yellow it shows a bunch of checksum confirmation, then not need cheksum confirmation, Mov1_check executed, update media finished, #MANUAL MODE#, appling multi-csc, installing multi csc, then it shows install defaul apk-files, please wait, then install default apk-files, finished.
at this point the phone just sits there and never reboots or anything. so i choose reboot the system and it does. I can find any backup of the rom on the external or internal sd card. I have both. did i do something wrong somewhere? am i missing the file in the structure somehow? thanks for all the help.

You have to update the recovery in order to use Clockwork. Right now you are in the stock recovery. Once you do it right you will see many more options and the CWM recovery screen (red letters). Ok so basically I need to download that file, replace the recovery, then reinstall the package twice. Dies that sound right? Lol
Also, I really don't have Amy plans to install a. Custom rom, so a Ti backup would probably be enough anyway right??

Yes you will know when you are in Red Clockwork recovery, it looks way different than the blue stock one. Install the update twice and you should see it.
I would just do a batch backup of your apps and data with Titanium. You don't need a Nandroid backup really unless you are flashing roms or kernels and something goes wrong.

[XT1032] CM 12 - Flashing TWRP v2.8.6.0 has caused bootloop

XT1032 CM 12 latest nightly (I think)
I flashed TWRP v2.8.6.0 using their manager app. I entered recovery mode and everything seemed to work fine. I made a NANDroid backup then rebooted. Unfortunately the device was then stuck at the bootlogo and kept looping. I can still access recovery and fastboot but for some reason adb doesn't see the device, nor can my device's data be access under Windows 7. I don't recall if I had USB debugging on or not. I would like to try to backup a few files to my computer (the backup for instance) but I am unable to since I can't use adb as the device is not recognized. MTP through TWRP doesn't seem to work either. I do have the Universal drive pack installed already on Windows.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

To start with, let's make sure the files you want still exist.
1. Boot into TWRP recovery
2. Go to "Mount" and check that your "Data" partition is selected
3. Go back and then go to "Advanced" and then to "File Manager"
4. Navigate around (maybe /sdcard/ ? Depends what you're looking for) and find the files you need
If you can't find your file, you'll need some more help. Let's say you do see your file. Do you have a USB-OTG cable? You could plug a USB drive into your phone and mount that. Then you could copy your file to that drive. If you don't have the cable you do have some other options, but let us know how far you get.
EDIT: I know I haven't addressed the problem of the bootloop at all. Many of those solutions involve wiping so we need to make sure you've backed up all the files you need first.

I backed up the content of the sdcard. I tried restoring the CWM nandroid with data only so it did reinstall the apps but unfortunately all their data and settings are gone. Making a full restore just goes back to bricking. So I have the nandroid and the data manually backed up to a computer but no idea how to restore it.
I've tried pushing the nandroid back to /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup after an unsuccessful restore but now it doesn't even work. (protocol failure, the push command fails)
honestly at this point I think the best solution is just to make a clean install. In fact it would be a good idea to just reset the whole phone and start with a clean slate with CM13 including wiping system files and maybe manually restore some key files and configuration (I've got all the .com files of relevant apps)
Do you know how to do that? :laugh:

I'm not really a Nandroid expert, but I can take a few shots in the dark. When you did your backup you got a TAR file for System and one for Data, etc., right? Then you convert those to IMGs? If you upgraded and then restored the system backup I can see why that would result in a boot loop. Restoring the data image shouldn't cause such problems though. Is this what you've tried so far? You're right, though. The safest method is to manually restore the data of just the apps where you need that data, and do it one at a time. This would allow you to pinpoint what is causing the issue. Of course, I may have no idea what I'm talking about. I've never actually needed to restore a Nandroid backup! Hopefully someone with more experience there will chime in.

I thought to hell with it I went and solved the issue by installing CM13
