lg g3 worth it? - AT&T LG G3

hello. I'm thinking about either getting the lg g3 or wait for the note 4. I'm coming from an iPhone 5 so I'm sure i will be happy with either one lol. my best buy has the g3 for 99 with 2 year contract. I'm sure i can sell my ip5 to them for a decent amount and somewhat get the phone for "free" if i upgrade. i also have a $50 gift card reserved with them so I'm pretty excited when i upgrade. i played with one at best buy and i was really impressed with it. i saw a little lag but my jailbroken ip5 has lag so I'm not worried too much about it. then again I'm hearing a lot of the note 4. i wanna wait till i hear bout the note 4 but i want a new phone! lol. so users who own the g3, how do u feel about it? was it worth it? pros and cons? cons i read about were in regards to battery life and the display when used outside. overall, i think i will be happy with either one.

does anybody knows if the verizon lg g3 works on tmobile like the verizon htc one m8? sorry if this is not the right place to ask this question

Save the Stress

Save the stress and buy a Galaxy Nexus. I can honestly say I've fallen in love with the stability and screen of this phone. It is the smoothest thing I've ever used. I'm using AOKP Jelly Bean on it. Take my word for it. Buy the Galaxy Nexus and get an OtterBox Commuter case for it. You will not regret it. Trust me, best phone by far. You can't go wrong with a pure Google device. Also to clear things up if you are unsure...YES, 4g does work on T-Mobile and At&t. The data does not drop, it is an amazing feeling to be honest. With this LG I dropped data all the time. The camera on the Nexus is way better as well. You wont regret getting this phone. It is well worth the new low price.

How's the storage space, I use mine for a music player as well, so I was wondering about this, I have been going back and forth with the S2 because the S2 has a SD slot.

I'm really tempted to just drop my G2X and get a GNex, especially cause it just went on sale for $300 outright on one of the carriers up here in Canada (Mobilicity). I'd love me some JB but something's telling me to wait for the next nexus. You always want the latest and greatest when you get a smartphone right?
Anyone else feeling torn like this?

Same issue here. I'm debating getting the phone from mobilicity as well. Only problem is I could probably barely get $100 out of this phone. And with the MIUI V4 port it made the phone a whole lot better. MMS+Data works now. I get the occasional drop...
It's a tough decision.

Wait till the next nexus is out, hardcore hardware junkies will sell this phone for much, much less than 300.
That's what my plan of action is.

The Nexus 7 is great as a tablet, but it's not a phone and it cannot fit in my pocket. I need data when I'm out and about, and Wifi is not available when I need it most. I'll just sit tight. I wouldn't call it outdated though, at least not for me. I've been on an Optimus V on Virgin Mobile's terrible network where data seldom works anywhere. I'm hoping my new (to me) G2x lasts me till I can find a good deal on a Sensation or another good used phone.
Agree with the OP. I just sold my G2x. Picked up the new Nexus about a month ago. Great phone. I don't even bother with any roms or kernels. JB just works out of the box. All I did was unrooted it to run few programs that need it and I could not be happier.
Very disappointed with LG and the G2x. It was my first android and the experience was awful.

Isn't the Nexus camera only 5 MP compared tot he G2x's 8 MP camera. I could care less either way as I don't take many pictures or even care THAT much about that small of a difference in the quality of the picture. I do plan on getting Nexus soon because I've been over the G2x after a month of owning it.

I'd love to get the Galaxy SIII or maybe even the One X, but those phones are ONLY affordable for most people if you sign a new contract. I'm not eligible for upgrade until July of next year so I don't have any optioons but the Nexus if I want a new phone. I'm not made of money and don't have $350, but I'm aiming at getting the Nexus in October. I'm going to set aside $150 from my check in September, and then just pay the rest of it in October.

True, but that's the cheapest you're going to get a new phone out of contract that's actually a good phone. My plan is just to put aside some cash, get the Nexus, use my G2x as a backup phone, and then I want to try a Windows 8 phone once my contract is up and then I'll just hope for the best.

Except that most of us use and need phones, not tablets. I rather have a phone tha does everything than have a tablet that does everything but make calls and texts. Although I AM very tempted to get a Nexus 7. I just can't justify its purchase. If I had a better phone other than the G2x, though, I'd probably just splurge and get the Nexus 7.

I was on Virgin Mobile here in California with that same phone before switching to T-Mobile and getting the G2x and I was VERY happy with the service. Data was great except for one area of one city that I never go to anymore since I no longer live around there. I was not satisfied wtih T-Mobile's service and the G2x based on my experience with the Optimus V on Virgin. T-Mobile isn't noticibly faster on data speeds and my Optimus V had instant GPS locks every single time and we all know how bad the GPS is on the G2x. My experience on Virgin Mobile is why I plan on moving to Sprint once my contract is over with T-Mobile.

I'm sorry it was your first experience, but happy you're staying and that it didn't scare you away from Android. It's my third Android (had Optimus M followed by the Optimus V followed by the G2X). It was because of a positive expeirence with both those two other Optimus devices that I made the foolish mistake of sticking with LG. I trusted them and I was let down. Big time. If it wasn't for the dev community here, the G2x is seriously garbage as a phone. The Optimus V easily performs better with worse hardware and an arguably worse carrire.

It totally depends where you live. Here in Denver Verizon is king, but T-mobile has faster data speeds than Verizon. Sprint and AT&T aren't very good here. On VM most of the time data does not work and I can sometimes call out when in buildings like Walmart, Target, etc. The Optimus V was an excellent beginner phone to using Android and I love Android because of it. But I need a reliable data connection for work so VM has to go. I refuse to pay Verizon's insane monthly prices and I'll never use them. AT&T claims to have spent a few million on network upgrades here recently so I don't know if that's helped anything.

Nexus 5 or LG G2 ?

What's up everyone I currently have a Galaxy S4 for Verizon and unfortunately it came stock with ME7 . Im tired of verizon and there restrictions and I miss running a CFW and having a root. Im more then likely going to T-Mobile and getting Unlimited Data. The 2 phones on the top of my list are the Lg g2 and this New Nexus 5. I love both phones but I do like the stock android from a Nexus. I would love to hear your suggestions even if it isnt a phone thats not on my list. In a sense im looking for a new phone to stick with for a good amount of time. Thanks for any advice and help in advance!

Nexus 5, and it's not close.
I was in the same dilemma.
I decided to go for the Nexus 5 because its a Nexus.
The main difference in hardware between the two for me is the screen size. I wanted the bigger screen on the G2.
But I decided I want to pay less and get a device with better software

The nexus is pure stock android which is fully stable .
On benchmarks it benches better than the G2 and is much cheaper.
If you love stock android then the Nexus 5 is the greatest phone you can currently get.
Tip:
Also don't try to use the term CFW (Custom Firmware), people on xda won't usually know it, use the word ROM (Read Only Memory).
I find this is actually funny because we have root in them and we can make everything read-write

Google never allows sd cards in the nexus devices. They never will. They say they are too slow for a top end type device.
Yea I guess ill have tp get the 32 GB version so I never feel limited for space

The G2 has the screen size, battery and camera advantages which is not something to overlook, if they were closely priced I'd go for the G2. Now if you can get some dough off due to contract extension and plan to stay with your carrier, the G2 can still be an attractive offer. Overall though, buying both unlocked and the Nexus 5 is just so awesomely priced. So it's a matter of looking at your options.

That is what I got. I have a 64gb card in my sgs3, so it will be hard, but the thing that makes it worth it, is how easy it is to dev/hack.
Haha, i was on the same boat. I love the G2 Screen and the lack of bezel. Overall the decision came down to software and speed. I always go with a custom ROM cause i like stock, (yes u can do this on the g2) but the fact that i will be getting the latest and greatest updates first is a huge + for me. Thus why i decided on the Nexus.
I say go Nexus!.
Nexus is looking like a go especially with 4g and unlimited data on T-Mobile sounds pretty good to me so far

How you can be a recognized contributor and come out with such a poor statement is quite scary...
Anyway it is VERY close.
The G2 has a bigger screen, yet only a fraction larger. (~1mm all around). And weigh's in negligible over the N5 yet has a 3000mah battery instead of 2300. Then it has a 13mp camera with the same tech as the 8mp Nexus 5.
The Nexus 5 wins in price (for most, some countries not so much), Software Support (I won't say software because the LG Software is actually pretty smooth on the G2 and the feature set isn't bad, but of course not KiKat, yet).
They share the same CPU/GPU/Ram. The Nexus 5 will likely be quicker due to KitKat/AOSP, but it will only be a matter of weeks and the G2 will have that also so if having it first is important to you, then again N5.
They also share the same radios/spectrums/etc.. so N5 is unlocked vs LG G2 probably/possibly being locked to one carrier. Important factor for some.
Clearly I don't think one is a "winner", I have the G2, and I pre-ordered the N5. I want to check out KitKat and see how it performs/battery life with only 2300mah but KitKat optimized. I plan to pick the winner (for me) once I have them side by side for a while.
Either way, they are most CERTAINLY close. The question is (in most markets) is ~$150-200 worth a bigger screen/battery/camera and the loss of immediate updates/better rom development. In that case, for most, the answer seems to be no.

Precisely why it's not close. Price and software development.
While the G2 will likely have developers to create some AOSP goodness for it, the lifespan of Nexus devices is always considerably longer than others. AOSP never runs as smoothly, with little bugs, as it does on actual Google devices.
If you're looking at the hardware, with respect to no other factors, then it is close. Otherwise, no.

Absolutely, if your only importance is ROM's and having the latest software first, or the longest amount of support for updates, then it is not close.
Price is personal. I have absolutely no problem spending the extra $150 if it means better battery life. The G2 is a battery monster, so I expect to be disappointed by the N5, but I absolutely hope I am wrong. Also in some countries the price is almost negligible. Plus if you have an upgrade and stick with the same carrier anyway, you can have the G2 for $150-200 vs $440 (32gb vs 32gb), so that is another factor. A lot goes in to play for this. Just simply saying it is cheaper is not enough.
When comparing ALL factors though, I stand by my previous statements. Personally I wouldn't let development allow me to be hooked to only owning a Nexus but that is absolutely the key factor for some people, I get that. Battery life is a huge importance to me and until I can see how it lasts with my own eyes I take the specs with a truckload of salt. With a 30% less battery size on the same hardware KitKat is going to have to do some pretty superb savings to keep it close.

If you looked at hardware specs only and no other factors, it is NOT close. The G2 wins hands down if you take out software and price, but that would be just plain silly.
In case anyone misinterprets my statements, I am not saying I think one is better than the other. I think both have their +'s and personally I don't find either a clear winner. That is all.
While I'm still going with the N5 for the rom support, Sprint is selling the N5 for $149 and the G2 for $99 (both with 2 year contracts), so the G2 actually wins the price debate.
Edit: whoops had too many tabs open and got this thread confused with one that was just for Sprint. Still, I imagine TMo will sell the G2 for either the same price or less than the N5 to stay competitive.
If usbOTG is present in the N5 then you can simply attach a microsd card to a microsd to USB to the usbOTG adapter (too many adapters) or simply a flashdrive. While it may be a pain to carry around it will at least extend the capacity.

150 dollars for an extra 700mAh is just not worth it in my opinion. im enjoying a 15,000mAh power bank that i got for 50 bucks and will put the extra 100 dollars toward a new phone in 2-4 years

Well if that were the only factor that is a pretty harsh bargain for sure but 700mah in this case IS 30% larger. That is not small. You also get 13mp vs 8 and .2" bigger screen. Again not that I think it is a winning decision either, tough call and personal preference. I just think it is worth more consideration than people are giving.

meh, you're in the heart of public android development. of course people here are going to side with a Nexus device. not that people here aren't considering the specs, but we put more of an emphasis on the pure android experience.
i feel the same way about people here complaining about no sd slot. this is just not the place to voice that opinion, it will not bring them any sympathy. this is not a consumer forum

meh, you're in the heart of public android development. of course people here are going to side with a Nexus device. not that people here aren't considering the specs, but we put more of an emphasis on the pure android experience.

[Q] Anyone regrer choosing nexus 5 over LG G2?

Just wondering since I am looking to trade my lg g2. Just want to get some feedback from actual owners.
The battery in the G2 is nice, but that's about it. Performance is similar and the camera in the G2 is probably better, but I only use my phone to snap quick pics, not as an SLR so I can't really tell.

I do. Miss my g2

nope, the G2 is nice, but it's not really an upgrade... at least not in my opinion.
I think it's a what you intend to do with it
I'm a n00b and got the N5 to start learning how to modify Android phones. A buddy of mine got the G2 and loves it but doesn't want to mess with it. I haven't checked any of the G2 forums so I'm not sure how easy it is to modify.

In my opinion the sound quality is bad. I have the g2, s4 and the nexus 5 right here on the table and the G2 and s4 are better. The only thing I like about the nexus is the price and it feels better in my hands. The battery isn't to bad but it's not good either. The people who say the battery is better then the s4 are lying lol but its not bad tho. My G2 is my daily driver now

No regrets since the G2 comes at about $200 more without a contract. and if you want it cheap you have to get a contract...its a lose lose
althought I only have about 6 more months on my AT&T 2yr contract and I thought about upgrading to the G2 to keep my unlimited data and contract...
Nexus 5 (Black, 32GB)
Rom: Purity (11/20)
Kernel: Franco r14
Ordered the Nexus 5 the day it came out, used it for a week and then got an LG G2 given to me as part of my job, used it for 24 hours and was then back to my Nexus, only thing nice about the G2 was the battery life & now it just sits collecting dust until it gets sold. Nexus 5 > G2

A lot of people I am sure. Have you seen some peoples signatures on here? They get a new phone like every 6 months and even buying used.... good lord. Having the htc one and the s4 at the same time while using a nexus 5 on the off days.

Not a single regret .

N5 over G2 anyday, anytime. No regrets.
unless you get the S4 from Google play its almost worthless from any provider. AT&T version sucks

Have you seen where they put the buttons on the G2?
Nope just for that reason, not even considering the others...
i was on the n5 and got a deal for on a g2 which i went for. less than a week later i sold it and got an N5 again. IMO screen, camera and battery were nicer on the G2, but even that couldnt make up for the horrible LG UI. ugly and slow.

[Q] Best Phone for $200

Could anyone point me in the direction of a decent phone, non Samsung, for roughly $200. I use Selectel Wireless and they are going 4g soon and I am going to use my S4 there and look at upgrading, to a point, and have been looking at the LG G3. Any comments on the phone?

The G3 does look nice spec wise and software, to a point, will probably still root and flash a custom recovery if available. I plan on purchasing a phone through Swappa, again, which is where I got my S4 on MDK so I could get rid of touchwiz. The Turbo looks great but idk seems a bit expensive to purchase used or outright. S4 has decent HW and with no more touchwiz is much more usable. I would recommend Swappa to anyone looking to purchase a used phone or off contract phone.

I'd recommend both the LG G3 and the Moto G. Both in your price range, but still high-end-ish, with plenty of ROMs, support, and modding here on XDA.
Thank you for the recommendation the g3 looks nice I need to upgrade in size but not necessarily too far up in hardware

T mobile is very good!

There you can see all the data that I have consumed between December / January. 119.8GB .. I have tmobile service two years ago In the plan with unlimited LTE.
As I live in a rural area, the broadband internet coming into this area is very very bad and does not work for nothing, because I live far away from the base of the signal. In my area does not fiber cable but if the copper.
"Download speed does not exceed 350 KB" And that is why I have to use cellular internet, because t-mobile is the only option for unlimited data I have
It happens that I have months consuming about 80GB per month, but this month I have spent more than 100GB and I have half-month. Just to know if I am at risk for canceled me the account or if I can consume that amount or more!? It is I think to use 200 GB this month
You can use as much as you like, as long as you're not tethering your good.

In fact, 60% of the data I've used, has been through hotspot
looking at the other stats, you need to get a life.
stuff you see in videos, dont use that in real life. Protip

there is always someone who speaks without knowing. This is not my primary line, use it to make downloads nothing more and for my childrens to play youtube and online gaming.
It was a lame joke.
Got a buddy I pc game with that's in the same situation. Had to something similar awhile back.

I received a text from tmobile around November saying i have 3 months free unlimited 4g lte, did you happened to received that sms too?
Doing some research on the tmobile note 3 forums and found that there will be no official marshmallow update for the note 3... it only recieved one big update and that was lollipop. Im not too sure if it will recieve 6.0 but from the information ive gathered, it seems that it wont be happening. SO.. im thinking about selling my note 5, if i can find someone locally who would want one... and get me a nexus 6p or an iphone 6s/ 6s plus.

Better act quick... or else price will drop and you'll be getting less for what youd paid for. I like this phone but i dont wanna be stuck with a phone that will recieve updates very late. I heard that Samsung will finally release software updates quickly but i guess not. Its been several months now and still no marshmallow update... this will be my last samsung smartphone, until they start updating their phones early and better optimized software then ill probably consider buying their phones again.
I knew samsung was always lacking on their updates... so i guess it was my fault getting the note 5. I mean.. my options were very limited... i wanted to finance a phone. I couldve gotten an iphone 6s or 6s plus but i wanted to try something different because i had an iphone 5s. I just wanted the latest and greatest smartphone, and note 5 was on my mind. Nexus 6p was also on my mind but didnt had the money to spend all at once...
The Nexus is PRIME
