Is there a standalone gps in this model? - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The only reason I have been holding onto my ipad air is for the ability to use it as a navigation device. Tomtom works great even if not connected to the internet.
Will the tab pro 12.2 work the same way or does it need to be connected to the internet? Maybe a specific model I should get?

Yes it will work with the tom tom or similar app. Google maps would require a connection though

Will I need to get the LTE model? I had to buy the iPad Air LTE model because the wifi model would not work with the navigation programs without a connection....

There are a few gps apps you can download on android that do not require a data connection to function. You have to download all the maps but they work.

OK, Im pretty sure tomtom is one. I am going to try the 64GB wifi model note pro and see if it works. If it does, the iPad air goes on craigslist!

Just curious but why such large screen GPS devices? You could probably do a nexus 7 and have an easier time mounting it in a car than a large tablet.

Not its main purpose, but it would be used that way once in a while.......

Cool.
I'm noticing on the wifi that if pushed hard during charging (multi-window use with heavy video decoding) it just doesn't have much forward progress on charging. I have no idea how this thing will perform on a car charger with GPS running and screen brightness turned up to be visible in daylight. Hopefully it at least stays at a given level and doesn't lose ground on battery % in such a use case.

That's an Apple BS thing. They don't include a GPS chip on the Wifi model to save cost. Most Android tablet come with a GPS chip...

wrong. just make the map area available offline and as long as your route doesn't leave the downloaded area you're golden

Yes you can do that but legitimately its a giant pain in the *!#.
You can only save areas so large (not very big ones) and if you were planning a trip for vacation or something it would take forever to download them all. And I believe they limit how many you can save. It would be much much much easier to download something like tom tom and just download the entire USA

I use my car charger that has a 2 amp port, also used to charge my wife's iPad, to charge my note pro 12.2 and it works. It does get a little warm but other than that using heavy use it does a slow charge on the device.

[Q] NFC does not work

Hello,
I have a stock rooted Blaze 4G. In the Settings, I make sure that NFC is enabled, but it does not seem to work. I downloaded a bunch of NFC apps, and none of them could pick up any RFID tags (e.g., parking meters, work badge, US passport, etc). The battery states that it has NFC.
After I rooted my phone, I got rid of a lot of T-Mobile bloatware, so I am wondering whether I could delete something that would affect NFC.
I do not know if it is a software or hardware bug and whether this is a bug at all, so I would really appreciate any suggestions or comments. Thank you.
im running tweaked 1.6 and nfc works for me... you ha e to enable in settings and use an app but i can send bookmarks and contacts and data between phones at least.. i havent found any tags to scan yet...
if youre thinking that you might have dumped some apps that you need, i would reccomend flashing tweaked, it is unbloated and smooth....

Thanks, I will try Tweaked 1.6.
Who has actually used their NFC for anything...?

im buying a sheet of stickers off ebay and i wanna use them to rick-roll unsuspecting by sticking them on things that have scan codes...lol
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda app-developers app
I tried Tweaked v1.6, and the NFC still did not work I could still try to flash the stock ROM, but I really doubt it would work either. I guess it is a hardware defect, and unfortunately, I cannot bring it back to T-mobile as I left them a while ago. I do not really use NFC often (apart from SF parking meters), but it is nice to have a fully functioning phone.
nfc on android phones only works with a frequency of 13.56 mhz so perhaps the tags you are scanning are on a dif frequency

The US passport works on 13.56 MHz frequency, but my phone cannot pick it up. Parking meters clearly say NFC, and my phone cannot pick them up either, so I have to enter the long number manually.
my phone doesnt even have NFC
my battery says near field communication on it, and the option to turn it on is in wireless and network settings... did you by any chance change your battery?
i have deffinately sent stuff between phones, but havent found a tag to scan yet...

Yes, the battery is stock, and it says Near Field Communication. I have not tried to use it to communicate between phones, but that is not what I would use it for on a daily basis anyway.

get rid Of internet at home and use phone as tether

I'm thinking Of increasing My cell package to LTE and tethering My laptop to My phone.
My current cell package Is 6G/month With the LTE it jumps to 10G/month. I typically use 6G on My cell and 2 to 3G at home per month
has anybody done this? if So can you offer some feedback and any pitfalls.
Sent from my SGH-I727R
All I could see is if you're flashing ROMs on your phone and it suddenly messes up then you can't go online to troubleshoot but if you don't flash on a daily basis then everything should be fine. I personally haven't done tethering on a regular basis (even though my plan allows me to).
no I don't ever put custom ROMs
Sent from my SGH-I727R using xda app-developers app
FWIW, tethering kills your battery life. You use a fair bit of internet at home, but not really a "power user" per se, so you're kind of in the gray area where this type of thing could work for you but still isn't a great idea IMO.
Sounds like a good idea if it saves cash at the end of the month. At home I easily blow through 200 gigs per month, but if my usage resembled yours, I'd do it.

Ya I'm thinking that's gonna be a con. but the phone will basically be plugged in once I'm home. do you thing because I'll be on LTE for a prolonged time it will affect the phone, because Of increased heat
Ya I'm right on that edge. that's why this Is still in the analysis phase.

Mostly TV! Netflix, hulu, crackle, youtube. Still have the og dvr but I hardly touch it anymore. Always have something streaming. I am fearful of imminent tiered data, hopefully Time Warner holds out.
My dad is doing this its saving him a lot of money and his lte is actually faster then his old network, the only downfall is make sure you plug it in because it drains your battery quick.

My savings would only be about $22/month but I'd get faster sppeds. My home connection is 6Mbps my friends are getting 20 to 40Mbps on their LTE phones.
The only thing holding me back is what if my needs change and I need more internet at home? Especially now that winter is arrving a lot more time indoors/at home.

what is pdanet? I just googled it and it's just an app that let's you tether and we can already do that stock with our Skyrockets. I wanted to tether using wifi very rare I'll use the USB plug, because I find plugging into the computer takes forever to charge.

Did a little bit of digging for you.
This is the only thing I found on the S3 and WiDi (aka. be compatible with the device you listed above)

I'm thinking it should work. I saw another thread where someone said it worked with their note 2

Personally I run a:
http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-HDMI-3FHU-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B0080CXSOU
to connect to my home theater. Not sure how well the wireless video/audio would turn out.
In my experience streaming anything over the air turns out poorly.
I guess the wireless nature of it all could be convenient though

I have the mhl adapter also, but it gets annoying having to constantly hook it up every time I wanted to watch a movie. At the same time, I don't wanna sacrifice sound quality just to be wireless. I'm torn!!!!!

I believe you can use the new APP called Assit to setup the driving profile. If you are traveling fast or have the dock it will automatically turn on the GPS and Bluetooth.
Its really new to me .. so I dont know how to customize yet...

I've been using Assist. It's working, but for some odd reason when I'm in driving mode it's not announcing caller names even though I have that option checked.

I use llama it is free and much easier to use then tasker I am not sure if it will do what you want but it has a boat load of options. I use it to shut off data when the screen is off to conserve battery life. Not that battery life is much of an issue with the Maxx anymore.

You will need a device that has the radio ship built in and if I remember right only HTC and some Sony devices have this chip still.
Yeah im using a Samsung Galaxy S3 with cm11. If im not mistaking my phone has radio capabilities since back when i was still using touchwiz it has a radio app.

Then if it is the EU version (US version doesnt have the hardware) Then just grab a fm radio app and hook up some headphones (they are used as antenna) and you should be good to go.
While it's not impossible to cram an AM radio in a phone, getting good reception requires the radio/phone to be stationary in a specific position. Cell phones typically don't remain stationary. So manufacturers, even the few that still put FM radio, simply don't bother. No app can turn on what doesn't exist.
I don't know how it's done in the Philippines (I assume that's where you are - good luck by the way), but in the US, severe weather emergency alerts can be broadcast through regular cellular telephony. Of course, that assumes the broadcast towers are still standing...
Your best bet is to buy a small portable radio. Something that people listen to sports on, or even one of those emergency ones that you can crank to charge up. But it wouldn't surprise me if these are hard to find, considering what's about to hit your islands.
