[MOD] Improve image/video/sound quality - Moto G Android Development

Hello friends!
This is my very first work so please do not hate me.
So, simple as the title says this mod/hack don't know how to call - it increases your cameras bitRates from its limitations. For example for video recording original bitRate was 10000000 and acc audio codec rate was 128000. With this mod it improved to 20000000 and audio codec to 288000. This is maximum as its possible (as far as I know). This is because video encoder h264 supports maximum of 20000000bitRates. Also let's not forget image quality it doesn't seem to be changed a lot but still its an improvement. Increased all image encoding quality values to 99.
DONT FORGET TO MAKE NANDROID BACKUP THIS IS IMPORTANT
+ you can make a backup of your original media_profiles.xml
Flashable install
1. Download mod.zip and place to your SD card/root.
2. Reboot into recovery.
3. Clear Cache/Dalvik Cache.
4. Install Camera Mod.
5. Clear Cache/Dalvik Cache.
6. Reboot and enjoy.
I don't think wiping cache is necessary but to avoid problems its suggestible.
Manual install
1. Download media_profiles.rar extract it anywhere on your PC.
2. Push it to your system/etc (I am using root explorer so it's easy to mount R/W).
3. Obviously click yes if prompted.
4. Reboot.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If problems occur please be sure permission are set right which are -rw-r-r- or 644
Hope everything will work for you and you will enjoy this!
If you find any mistakes/bugs etc please fix me!

There is no benefit in increasing the audio bitrate of the video encoder above 128k, the microphone isn't good enough for it to make a difference and you are just using up unnecessary extra space on your device.

+1 for the feedback. Interesting what others can say and if they achieved anything. Is it your knowledge talking or you actually run some tests?

This is probably true. The mic is good but not that good so over 128k AAC is kind of overkill. We just need video bitrate improvements.

He´s just using common sense. Even the original 128 kbps was overkill for the quality you get from the mic and 288 kbps? Well, that´s just insane. Imagine that people listen to studio recordings @ 128 kbps AAC.
Edit:
Just noticed that you also increased the video bitrate to 20 Mbps. Really? We are talking about 720p videos from a mobile phone

I am being negative here because of " Interesting what others can say and if they achieved anything." Sorry to say that, but this is a very arrogant attitude, especially when he was replying to someone who was right. Edviss basically told him "You never achieved anything, so shut up.", while he probably doesn´t know what he is doing himself.

from phone: using root explorer, locate extracted file, move it to system/app, you will get a warning message saying camera.apk already exists are you sure you want to overwrite it?

I can't play the file on Windows 7. I have tried with many third party .3gp apps. But it didn't success. So which software do I have to play on PC.
And what about photo improvement as you did great job with the 2.1 one??? When could we be able to adjust exposure, X10 has quite big problem to take good photos without exposure adjusting during photo shooting...

MMS settings
Hi ... as for 2.1 camera excellente job .... I can cleary see the improvement
As usual to change the audio may be dangerous for shyncronisation
One think I observed and I would like to suggest is concerning the MMS settings
Currently the format is 3gp but with size 640 by 480 ......
Trying differente sizes ... produce reboot when playing the video
Because of these settings the video length pemitted within the 300k standard is just 7-8 sec istead of the almost 30 sec permited with 320 by 240 or by using QIF smaller sizes......
What I wonder is if it would be possible to set the MMS video on 3gp but with smaller size or if it is available a tool (like the one used in the last 2.1) able to resize the mms video
Thanks
Is this the same Camera app that Wolfbreak has included as an update to his CM 6.1.3 v4.4?
If so then can you optimize the 720p quality please, since I get audio delays and the recorded videos also have lags in them. The 720p can be enabled by just clicking 'Custom' in the quality settings and although you see green lines and distorted images on screen, the camera app actually records in 720p
If you can fix the audio and video issues, this will be the final answer to _ALL_ of our camcorder woes
Camera uninstalled by mistake..
Any ideas on how to install the new or get the old one back on CM 6.1.3 v4.4. Should have just replaced the camera.apk but instead I uninstalled.
Update: Used flashtool to install camera.apk from Rendeiro. Thanks to him.
Install the codec from here...

You dont need any 3rd party softwares.... Say thanks, if helped....

[MOD] 720p recording ported from Hancocks ROM

BEFORE YOU READ ANY FURTHER, THIS MOD/PORT (WHATEVER) WILL PROPABLY ONLY WORK ON RED LENSED DEFYS! SORRY BUT IT SEEMS TO BE A HARDWARE THING! AND THERE ALSO MIGHT BE THE SLIGHT POSSIBILITY THAT IT IS LIMITED TO 3.4.2_145-003 VERSION ONLY! (AT LEAST THIS IS THE VERSION HANCOCKS ROM IS BASED ON AND THE SAME I TESTED IT WITH)
to make it short, i (kind of) ported the 720p recording capability of hankocks rom 1.11 to pays rom 3.3 (based on 3.4.2_145-003).
first of all, I AM NO DEVELOPER! so all props go to hankock! what i did was the following:
i took all the libs from hancocks rom which had something to do with camera & encoding (as you can see, not a very devlike procedure) and put them into my system/libs. then i took media_profiles.xml from hancocks rom and put it to my system/etc (of course i changed back permissions afterwards). first i used hancocks patched stock camera app and merged my and his build.prop so that the whole thing would run on my rom. and it worked perfectly. but this solution has 2 drawbacks:
1. hancock used 3gpp container, which is imho inferior to mp4
2. the audio encoding is very bad (amr_nb, 8kbps)
then i found out, that if i used lgcamera instead i would't need to change build.prop anymore and it still worked fine. besides of that, lgcamera is much more customizable settingwise. and by not modifying build.prop, i hope to enhance compatibility of this mod to other froyo versions.
and that is what my package contains:
-all libs with "enc", "cam", "camera" in therr names from hancocks rom (i know, i'm an amateur )
-media_profiles.xml from hancocks rom
-lgcamera 5.25 (free) btw. it works with the latest pro version from the market too
please use tenfars clockwork mod or other custom recovery to flash this update.zip. the built in original recovery won't work (doesn't accept signature). BEFORE YOU START, DON'T FORGET TO MAKE A NADROID BACKUP!!!
here you find an untouched video sample: http://forum.kut-btu.de/video/VIDEO00017.mp4
([email protected],8fps, mp4-container, video: [email protected]~10000kbit/s, audio: [email protected]/s, 44khz)
i know, seems very choppy but this is because i was walking constantly. framerate is quite good. my defy runs at 1,2ghz but i tested 720p rec @ 800mhz too and it worked the same. it might be necessary to apply sdcard read_ahead_kb patch (mine runs at 2560 kb instead of 128) to avoid slow framerate effect which could be observed on hancocks rom.
sadly, recording with .h264 codec is still not possible (and i doubt it ever will). hence the resulting video is no match for the 720p recordings of e.g. the samsung wave but imho it is still a lot better than stock and looks almost great
now i leave it to the real devs to optimize this, whatever it is.
DISCLAIMER:
I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES RESULTING FROM THIS MODIFICATION!
/edit:
mod works fine on the following froyo versions:
-3.4.2-117
-3.4.2-145 (as the mod comes from this version)
-3.4.2-155
mod doesn't work on:
-3.4.3-11
strange behavior detected:
after recording in 720p dmesg shows:
Timed out waiting for DSP suspend 3
pm_op()latform_pm_suspend+0x0/0x54 returns -1
PMevice C6410 failed to suspend:error -1

don't know, which impact this has on battery drain. after fresh reboot and w/o recording in 720p this problem doesn't show up.
Thnaks for this - i'll have a play with it later today
It works with Barebones 1.4... when im recording it seems little bit choppy, but playing it in MoboPlayer is good (smooth, maybe not 30 fps but its good!).
Thank you!

great! since Barebones 1.4 is based on CEE 3.4.2-155-002 Deblur, we can add it to the compatibility list.
yes, the recording view seems choppy on my system too, but the resulting video is quite smooth (~23-24fps).

sorry. i believe that 720p recording isn't impossible for green lense models. but i do believe that this patch based on hancocks mod will do the trick only for red lens defys. because it isn't just the color of the lens but a totally different sensor. perhaps someone figures out a mod for green lenses too.
But official Froyo is near, just wait, it should have 720p recording for EVERYONE.
I compare it to xd1 ROM files, and find the different files are,
720p_mp4venc_sn.dll64P
libOMX.TI.720P.Encoder.so
libOMX.TI.JPEG.Encoder.so
libOMX.TI.mp4.splt.Encoder.so
libOMX.TI.Video.encoder.so
Hope it can reduce the update size.

i don't think i will be any helpfull, cause i'm no dev. i just took the work of a dev and ported it to another rom. sorry. perhaps someone else is able to do it.
My problem with Hancocks ROM is that lgcamera records very light sound, no matter what encoding I chose (AMR_NB, AMR_WB or AAC). I am not even sure the software records sound on defy with encoding as AMR_WB and AAC.
Video works ok with MPEG4 encoding though with twp slight issues. One is video file bitrate is not the same as configured in lgcamera settings. The other one is framerate is always below 25 - not sure if SD card speed is the bottleneck.

with light sound, do you mean quiet or bad quality? strange when i set lgcamera from amr_nb to aac, it does use this codec at least the resulting video shows this in codecinfo. and i think the sound quality is slightly better too compared to amr. concerning the other two issues, i have the same experience. the framerate never goes over 23,9fps and when i force it to 25 or even 30, lgcamera won't start recording. youre right the bitrates of the resulting video are mostly lower then the bitrates chosen in lgcamera. 13 prduces ~10, 10 produces ~8 and 8 produces ~6 mbps. but imho there is a difference visible between 13 and 8mbps respectively 10 and 6 in the resulting video. at least on the computer you can see the difference.

[MOD][2011-08-27]Improved video & audio setting

Hi there,
here's my patched media_profiles.xml which improves your LG 3D video&audio recording quality.
The sound is significant improvement, i was sick of that "crispy" noise. After trying this patch you'd hear the sound is more natural.
You only need to apply these settings (replace the file in your system).
No need for additional patches or extra camera apps!
For recording on SD I recomend to use Class 6 or better, but i've made some tests on Class 4 with pretty good results as well.
That this improves:
2D and 3D video bitrate to 15Mbps
Video sound to 48kHz at 256kbps
What do I need
Your rooted LG Optimus 3D
Any file manager (eg. Root Explorer)
Download my file mediaprofiles.zip (see link below)
How do I install it
Root your phone (if not already done)
Download the file mediaprofiles.zip
Extract the media_profiles.xml from the Zip to the SD card of your phone
In your phone file manager:
go to system/etc and make a backup of your media_profiles.xml (eg rename it)
copy or move the new media_profiles.xml (the downloaded) to system/etc
Reboot your phone
Enjoy improved video & sound quality
Note that some players may still report the sound is only LQ at 24KHz 64kbps but just try it, you'll hear the difference very well
BUGS
Front camera is not recording
Camera app may crash when saving video - however video should be saved correctly.
... will try to get this fixed asap ...

Thank you so much,great job
15mb are for 720p or 1080p in 2d?
thanks so much
great mod =))
Seems to be working fine. Video is crisper in high detail areas and the bitrate in my sample video increased from 8 Mbit/s to about 12 or 13 Mbit/s.
Some weird behavior though: After I've shot a video (when I tap the Stop button) I get booted to the home screen instead of remaining in the Camera application. The video itself is fine though, no corruption or anything, but it's a bit of an annoyance to get booted.
Hi,
the bug with front camera seems to be fixed,
also the crashing camera app when saving the video seems to be fixed.
I'll make some tests and if this will work fine I will post the updated MOD asap....

P. S. But 3D recording dont work for me
P.p. S after recorded 2 1080p video, the camera stop working
New MOD attached.
This is 2D/3D video still at 13-15Mbps
Bugs fixed:
Front camera working (with its default LQ settings)
Original Camera app is no longer crashing after saving the video
New bug:
Sound quality is normal - default, no improvement.
Will try to fix this asap.....
3d recording is working now?
its working on the two phones i got. feel free to test on yours. thanx.
it works now
waiting for audio improved, and higher bitrate for 1080p,like 20Mb/s

And 1 more thing about the "audio" tweak... Be carefull with that, because some phones cant handle it for any reason, and the recording will crash soon as the phone "exceed" the limit.
may sound strange, but can we have a "compromise" version?
I would love this as the macroblocking on 3D is obvious on my big TV, but my SD card isn't that fast, any chance of an 8mbps version? (for 3D, double the bitrate of stock but not so high it needs an expensive SD card)

[MOD]H.265 a.k.a 'hevc codec' Video Recording for OnePlus 2[Nougat/Oreo]

Hello everyone,
As we all know that oneplus 2 supports hevc codec but by default it is not used as the primary video codec. So i've modified a system file to allow the camera to record with H.265 video codec by default.
*/
* * Your warranty is NOT void. * * I'm not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, * thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please * do some research if you have any concerns about the modification * YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if * you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you. * */
Steps:-
1)Take a nandroid backup.
2) Your device is rooted.
3)Download any file explorer that has access to system files. I prefer to use 'Root Browser'.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.root.browserfree
4)Download the 'media_profiles.xml' , it will be linked below. (see post 2)
5)Open File Explorer and go to /system/etc and backup the original 'media_profiles.xml' in case you wanna revert back.
6)Now copy the modified media_profiles.xml file to /system/etc and replace it with the old one.
7)set permissions to rw-r-r (0644)
8)turn off the device> boot into recovery> clear cache only
9)restart and Enjoy
Special Thanks to @64ashg for spending his precious time creating the Magisk Module. [check post 2 for download]
This mod is working on some Nougat and Oreo ROMs.
Tested on Vertex ROM, RR, Pixel Experience,LineageOS 15.1
If it doesn't work on your ROM, report below. I'll see what i can do.
For OxygenOS - It isn't working. [Testing]
If you like the mod, you are welcome. And Don't be shy to hit the like button. Feel free to share the thread but do not mirror any download files. Just redirect everyone here.

Not a huge difference. Just a 5-10 % boost in the quality. Mostly noticeable in 4k and 1080p. But the compression is great. ?
The quality and also the compression is better?

Obviously it will create the same file size if you use the stock bitrate. Try the 50% reduced bitrate. Compare both 4k videos of h.264 and h.265.

With stock bitrates why would I use h.265 over h.264?

If you are asking such a question, it clearly means that you don't know the difference between h.264 & h.265/hevc. H.265 exports video with the same quality as h.264 but reduces the file size by 40%(it doesn't automatically do its magic). You will need to adjust the bitrate for it to work. Now if anyone wants to record 4k video with H.265 and stock bitrate which is 42 Mbits, he/she can achieve the quality of the video normally where you will need to increase the bitrate upto 60/70 using h.264 codec.

Thanks for your answer so the quality should be better if we use same bitatres?

Definitely. I've noticed 5% boost in quality. But it isn't that great as we all know that the quality of the video depends on many things like the sensor, framerate etc. So the big question, why should we use this mod?
Basically if we need to save our precious storage. ?

ok one last thing, the framerate is not that good on h.265? and if I flash an update do I loose the codec file I changed?

Use oxygen camera at good lighting condition, it will constantly record at 30fps but at dark it drops to 20fps to brighten the video. So i use google camera at dark to have constant 30fps . And yes, you will loose the codec if you flash an update to your rom. And if you find 50% reduced bitrate video quality degraded, you can try the Balanced Bitrate file. It is good for both day and night time shots.
I can make a magisk module from the files, if users are using magisk..
I've made the same magisk mod for my 3t for ota survival.

Thanks for testing the mod.
Which ROM are you using?
And send me the original 'media_profiles.xml' and 'media_codec.xml' file from /system/etc folder.

[MAGISK] OP5T OOS oreo HEVC RECORDING 13.03.2018 updated

it enables hevc video recording, and he-aac audio recording.
updated versions: increased audio bitrate, it records around 125kbps
there are 3 version, pick whatever you want (in first version i uploaded, there was only 24 megabit)
personally i use 24 megabit version on my phone
for a normal user i recommend 24megabit, very little quality loss, unless you zoom in and compare pixel-to-pixel, you wouldn't notice, also i couldn't believe but in some cases it records better than 42 megabit (original oos bitrate), and faster upload to youtube etc.
you can also select 42 megabit, it records better than stock h264, and if you render your videos, it should be a better option, since you will compress it more. or if you just want h265 choose this because i haven't touched bitrates except audio
32 megabit version is for option, it should you give balance between quality and size, it seems okay.
24 megabit version
720p 8mbps
1080p 11mbps
[email protected] 22mbps
"2k" 12mbps
4k 24mbps
32 megabit version
720p 10mbps
1080p 15mbps
[email protected] 30mbps
"2k" 16mbps
4k 32mbps
42 megabit version (this is phone's original bitrate)
720p 14mbps
1080p 20mbps
[email protected] 40mbps
"2k" 20mbps
4k 42mbps
based and working on oos 5.0.2 to 5.1.0 incl. OB6 (same base file in all of them) op5t, it may work on 5 but im not sure, try it
not supporting any rom else than oos oreo but you're welcome to try and post results
720p,slomo,"fastmo?",1080p,60fps,4k,front720,front1080, everthing records with hevc and heaac
to install this mod USE MAGISK 15+
if you used my old version and want to go stock, download stockmediaprofiles.zip and copy the file inside to system/vendor/etc
and i recommend open camera, you can record 4k videos on front camera and it's quality is REALLY better than oneplus' camera app's 1080p, enable camera2 api and select 4k in video recording settings while on front camera.
also you can adjust bitrate of video (up to 100mbps) and jpeg quality of photo, it is a really good app.

Very strange, it should not have that kind of error because its not that critical file, at most it can mess with your video recording and crash camera using apps, i dont know why this happened to you, restore original file with twrp, if you dont see system files mount system.
It works just fine. I made an Magisk module only for my use, but can't share it since I used somebody else's template.
Thank you OP for the work.

Do you use magisk? If so is "preserve avb2 dm verity" checked? If you using supersu please use magisk and uncheck that option.
waiting for your feedback

I don't think that matters. Did you install the other magisk version before tweaking and releasing yours? I see the magisk version replaces more files on top of yours
