Mine would be:
1. Pre order from web to avoid tax
2. Don't buy accessories in the store for 1000% markup.
3. Buy a case and screen protector online ahead of time so it's ready when you get the phone.

Cancel the case and screen protector. What's the point of paying for insurance and having a phone feel like leather if you going to put it into a brick?

haha, glad you asked. Mainly for resale value. Most people on xda get the latest thing and upgrade their phones fairly often. At least for myself, I pride myself in saying the phone is in mint condition with no scratches when I go to sell it. It really helps. Anyway most people WILL at some point drop their phone unless they have spiderman hands.

Negri. It was actually cheaper than even the store price before tax.

I agree with you on the screen protector. Why get a phone with such a nice display and ruin it with a screen protector. However a case can be totally worth it. So if you do drop you're phone it won't scuff it up and it also helps protect the screen since it allows you to put you're phone on a table screen down. Or if you happen to drop it screen down the case's lip will stop the screen from touching the ground. Also insurance is a must just in case the screen does happen to break or you're phone craps out.
So I would say get insurance is #1 get a nice low profile case is #2 but optional. #3 would be take good care of you're phone, keep the screen clean and never put anything in the pocket you keep you're phone in. Inspect the pocket for sand and make sure it's lint free, don't touch you're screen if you're hands are dirty.
If you do happen to work in a dirty place or have a dirty job like construction or any job that you need to use you're personal phone while you're clean then get a screen protector for sure. Or keep hand wipes on you at all times. So you can use you're phone without worry of scratching your screen.
I just hate screen protector's, they mess up the look and feel.

haha! I preordered earlier this week, and got the accessories already earlier this morning, and I'm now finding this post. like minded individuals i tell you.
E-Bay has a good case selection, but most of the S-View cases are overseas unfortunately. (they at least quoted delivery time as being before the phone is to be delivered.)

I kind of agree with you on the screen protector. I actually don't have one on my Note 8.0, the salesman that sold it to me told me it would mess up the sensors for the touchscreen. Then again, I do keep my tablet it it's sleeve most of the time anyways. But I do have a screen protector on my Note 2, and I've already ordered some for my Note 3. when I finally did sell my Note 1, it was in pristine condition because of the screen protector and the cases I had for it. I see how you say that it can mess up the look and feel, but I still think it's beneficial to have.

[Q] Sprint Screen Protectors

Anyone else using the sprint screen protectors for their epic? I just bought a pack and I'm really disappointed with them. They are just big enough to cover the screen it self. So there is no margin for error when putting them on. Also I think they are supposed to be anti-glare so make the beautiful screen of my epic hazy and almost pixelated. Any suggestions for decent clear screen protectors?
Does the epic really need a screen protector? I thought the screen was made from some super durable stuff?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
i know i made the sprint people put one on
i can take the hazyness until i get my skinomi
i recommend skinomi
Its still plastic and there are a lot of things that can scratch plastic.

I'll give skinomi a try. Thanks.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I took mine back for a refund. They just cost too much and made the screen feel unatural. They let me keep the one I had installed already until my new protectors came.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
People have been saying that the skinomi ones are too long I think... I'd recommend the phantom skinz one since I've had no problem, they have a cut out for the sensors and camera (which the skinomi does not have) and they have a lifetime guarantee.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
this is the one im talking bout i ordered one it has lifetime replacements and openings for the sensors and cam it is awesome on the htc hero so i hope it continues
Well, all I know is that at least the first batch of Skinomis didn't turn out so well. See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746037
Too long, but possibly good customer service? And like I said, no cutouts for the lights/sensor/camera. Skinomi has gotten plenty of good reviews for other phones, but for some reason the ones for the Epic haven't been well received.

The Sprint ones are total crap. Took mine back a few hours after I bought them.
yes they are but fools wont take it back cuz i used one

Yup! I am no doubt in the minority but I have managed to scratch my screen. It was in strange circumstances having to do with hiking on a trail (and I hardly ever hike, less have my phone out...) but scratchedy it went. No 20ft heights or bouncing. Just fell face down from my pocket on a dirt path with a pebble somewhere in there. They're not invincible, people.
lol unless ur doing stuff like that you dont need a protector
under normal use pocket car table things like that no but if ur roughing it why not protect it and get a skinomi

Scratched mine easily... I have 2g steel plugs on my lobes, and the first time i heard them click against the screen I knew I'd have a problem. sure enough, there are tiny scratches from where my ear hit the screen. My fault for not putting a protector on sooner.
Also managed to put a little hairline scratch down by the menu button, but i have no clue how i did that.

SGP tempered glass .4mm protector

So every time I purchase a new phone I go through the same process.
I spend a significant amount of money on a screen protector for it then to scratch and realise it's more effective to keep buying cheap protectors.
Well..... This time is no different, £30 on this screen protector. I have placed the phone in my pocket a few times where there is no grit or anything that should scratch the screen and it's got light scratches......
Never again :')

File a claim with them. They will replace it. Their customer service SUCKS at their best, but keep at them. You paid good money for what was suppose to be a good product. If people keep letting companies get away with this crap, companies will keep on doing it to you...

You can try keeping a tiny piece of anything on the screen(like a piece of tissue paper) to help the camera focus on the screen!
And try a halogen background lighting or you can first try using the flash to see if it brings out the scratches in the pic!:fingers-crossed:
I also got a scratch on the glass tR which I never know where it came from. Noticed that just 2 or 3 weeks after installing it on my phone. Very disappointed. I ordered MIME for the lifetime warranty then.
I have the nano glass screen protector on my phone about 4 days I think and I already got very light scratches. I will try to take some pictures today for show you guys and spigen as well.

Just because it's scratch resistant it doesn't make them scratch proof. I've seen a few gorilla glass products get scratches on them. You've just been lucky. The only reason I use screen protectors (along with a case) is for a higher resale value.
I have the Glass.tr and it now has a very faint crack going from the center of my phone to the sides.. I haave never dropped it. I think it happened in my pocket.. I think maybe me sitting down or something caused my phone to flex a little bit creating the crack.. which is bull.. it is suppose to be 9h or 8h.. flexing the phone a little should cause a crack.. I mean the gorilla glass didn't crack.. anyway I sent in a request for a new one.. lets see if they will do it.. my experience with spigen is they won't reply for like a week

You have it backwards, the harder the glass, the less stress it can take while flexing. Making it thinner also reduces its capacity to remain rigid, making it much easier to flex. The hardness rating is there to prevent scratches. if you want a flexible protector, go with a quality plastic.

Oleophobic coating scratching on a 3 week old phone?

I bought the galaxy s4 in the beginning of May. I did not put on a screen protector, having used iPhones from the 3G to the 5 the last 4 years, I have never had any screen scratches on any of them, so I assumed the galaxy series is the same thing.
Now just 3 weeks later, the top left of my display has a bunch of small scratches and glare spots. I know this is the oleophobic coating because if I wipe it down, the scratches all disappear, and only reappear after I put fingerprints on them and such. I haven't been near any beaches and I don't abuse my phones, and with my past 5 iphones, I have never had a scratch, so what gives?
By the way, since I am out of the 14 day return period, can I get this replaced under warranty? Should I go through AT&T or Samsung? Store or online?
I DO have Assurion, and my Citi Forward Visa would have a 50 dollar deductible to pay the 200 dollar Assurion deductible, so it would cost me only 50 for an Assurion replacement, but if I can do this through a warranty exchange, it would be better.

Serious question: did you have your earlobe pierced recently? I know earrings and piercings wear off the coating when you hold the phone to your ear.
If you do not want to bother with exchanging, maybe try cleaning it well and affixing a screen protector?
Have no thoughts on the return/exchange process (but bumping your msg up.

I could be wrong but as far as I've always understood oleophobic coatings all they do is resist fingerprints and has nothing to do with resisting scratches.. In fact its very easy to get very light superficial scratches in the coating itself and not the glass.. Again I could be wrong...
You can always call AT&T or Samsung and ask about if it could be a warranty issue... But I'm pretty sure they're going to tell you its normal wear and tear from everyday use

Ive had oleophobic coated screens in the past and once they started getting like that ive taken acetone or ensolv if you know what it is to it. Wiped it all around and it was perfect. It doesnt do anything to the glass but be careful about the phone itself, ensolv kind of melts plastic if you let it sit too long. My advice is to tape off the screen and try it out

Oleophobic coating helps resist scratches too believe it or not. The coating's best feature in my opinion is making the screen smooth to glide on and side benefit of that is resisting smudges. But I always use screen protectors so I don't get to experience it much. The good screen protectors with Oleophobic on them are on the pricey side.

So your carelessness is AT&T's fault?
To you and the OP, you both claim to be very careful with your phone but have 'lots of scratches' seems to me you were not that careful. I had my note 2 fir a month, with the flip cover, not a scratch. It fell on a floor face down and the cover opened from my lap while sitting in a chair, a few small scratches occured. Guess what, my fault. I bought a screen protector (only one I could find locally was the one that came with an otterbox commuter case). Seems like you should accept responsibility for what happens to your phone after you take it home.

Galaxy S4 Active dropped on concrete - how rugged is it? (pics)

Well, I dropped my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active onto a concrete sidewalk. I am not as careful as I should be since I would drop my SII without worry since I had the Ballistics case on it. My new Active had no case. It fell directly on a corner, and of course missed the hardened rubber/plastic part and hit the outer metal shell directly. It knocked a snap out of the bottom right corner opposite the impact point. I took the case off and installed it again and everything snapped in normally.
My screen is fine and everything works normally. Aside from asthetics, nothing is different than before the drop. I have read about some regular S4 screens breaking from far less. Maybe there is something to the "rugged" nature of the active.
Anyways, a picture is worth a thousand words so here are four pics. My first time uploading pics here so hopefully they turn out ok.
Ouch! My sincerest condolences.
I would be terrified while picking it up..
Any 5 inch touchscreen device shouldn't ever be considered rugged haha

It's not a rugged phone ladies... It's the same as an s4 just water and dirt proof.
You drop it and it will break just as easy as a regular s4.
Ouch!
Ouch that sucks! Yeah I just got my Active today and I need to get a case and screen protector ASAP.
I didn't think this phone would be drop proof. It was advertised as waterproof/dustproof.
At least the screen is not cracked.
Ouch! At least a case will cover the damage and the screen is not cracked. One of the reasons I returned mine. It is a bit slippery. The ATT manager asked why I was returning it and I said no cases, no support and he scoffed at me. I then asked him when is the last time a Galaxy Device was launched and cases were not available on that day at the store? Even my captive had a case at ATT the day I bought it...It has been over a week and you can't even get an overpriced cases from ATT? No thanks.

That is what I was thinking. With a case it won't even show. I did buy the Best Buy protection so supposedly I can get unlimited exchanges but still...
I know it wasn't made with drop protection, but it did hold up pretty well. If a case ever comes out I will have no worries at all.
I dropped my s4 in a puddle 2 days ago fully submerged and my heart sunk. Ripped it sort let it dry. Used some alcohol to get water out and it works fine. Not an active though.

people will do amazing things to get what they want. that said, perhaps food ought to be prioritized over cell phones/random crap you want. how did you break 3 s4's? you must have the worst case of butterfingers ever. i usually buy mine off contract or unlocked, but i have yet to accidentally destroy any cell phone. not everyone has the money to shell out for new stuff whenever they need it.
fortunately i dont have to worry about money, ever, but i still take very good care of whatever i have, and i have learned not to lend things out or let people use my stuff (especially drunk friends and cell phones or idiot friends and new sports cars).
seriously, how did you manage to break 3 already? i know one guy who drops his iphone about once a week.

Sounds like the case of "I haz monies." Paying full price 3 times sucks really really bad. I would hope you mean breaking the original, then breaking it at repair, and one more for good measure. Still, that's just crazy butterfingers, but I digress.
Op, I seriously doubt "rugged" means unchipable, or even blemish proof. If phone meets concrete from even three feet and the right angle, you'll either chip, dent, or scratch. In thing to be happy about is the glass or screen shattering. I'll take dents and chips over exploding screens any day. Still, not having cases for it is highly questionable. You'd think even Sammy would release a case, just to collect more money.

I cannot believe how ****ty the active is, this phone slipped out of my pocket and fell from about 10 inches up the day I bought it. The screen cracked in two places. Upper right corner and right below the back button.
However, I called at&t and they sent me a regular s4 free of charge and let me keep the mildly broken active. Never charged me or anything. If only I could find a replacement screen.

At this point, Samsung may be able to replace it cheaper than buying parts. Of course it's on the assumption you want it fixed today.

I dropped mine today too, which is weird because I never drop my phone. I have a scuff mark on the metal outer shell like you. Pretty disappointed it scratched so easily.

I don't understand why people who purchase this phone seem to think it is shock proof, drop proof and crush proof. It's marketed as being waterproof and dustproof.

Ouch that sucks! Yeah I just got my Active today and I need to get a case and screen protector ASAP.
I didn't think this phone would be drop proof. It was advertised as waterproof/dustproof.

Glad to see your phone survived. I'm still going to wait for my case to come in the mail though.

I wish it had drop protection. But a case should fix that. I'm just thrilled about it being waterproof.

One of the reasons I got rid of my old S4 was because people were having the screen crack while in their pocket with no trauma. I haven't heard any such reports on the Active just yet. Honestly, the one time I cracked a screen it was on my Note 1 and it was a drop of similar height and I had a Trident case on it. It sucks, but I can't see blaming an electronic device when I'm the one dropping it.

Galaxy s 4 lifeproof nuud

Just snaged one up from best buy and have to say its thin and light an awesome did the water test with the enclosed s4 test unit... its light and not as buoky as a defender but feeks like the same drop protection is offered. . The speaker is not real noticeably muffled depends on the music and volume level phone calls are good just gotta cut volume up a little but thats it no problems talking at all.. the only thin I have noticed is the light sensor is right next to the plastic housing for the ear piece and does make it slower to transition from bright to dark areas. .. thats the only negative thing I have found so far and its not that big of a deal and maybe the home button enclosure top is right under the space makes hiting the space bar a little awkward but can get use to it... if yall have any questions just ask if wanted I can make a test video of the case and stuff just let me know and I'll do what i can to answer or help. .. here's a picture of the box and the test unit will post more shortly. .. those were taken with the case on with glash so you can see how the pictures are a little
Update : I called lifeproof and have to say customer service was just awesome told them my issies and they were gonna send me a new caae and didn't even ask for said that thats not a known issue and they would give me another case becuase it shouldn't interfere with the light sensor so I said ill just exchange it best buy which I did and the 2nd one is just awesome no more issues with the auto brightness. ... and sound is better with this one I had to set my volume to half way for talk and speaker is no different than another case

Thanks for the pics, I've been trying to decide on this case for a while, couldn't find much on what it looked it like on the actual phone.

No problem i have the otter deffender the s view aromr and out of those this is my favorite its alot lighter then the defender and not as bulky the clear back is awesome and doesn't seem to mess with signal that I can tell like the deffender... do what I did lol go to best buy and try them both there are subtle differences between the fre and nuud besides the screen protector like plastics around the ear piece and home butto have different contours...
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Figured id update I exchanged for the fre the light sensor/proximity sensor thing was getting on my nerves and the only differences between the 2 are the fre has a more angled edge where as the nuud has more square edges around the screen which hides the sensors a little and of course the screen protector built in ither than that there the same loving the fre the inly pad thins is the screen protector seems pixilated a little I still love it tho

I am curious if this will work with the wireless charging back since it is slightly thicker.
On a side note, I went to a Verizon Corp Store and asked about this case (Huge Lifeproof fan) and the store manager told me "Lifeproof does not make these for anything but iPhones." So I pulled out my phone, went to the site and said "I can buy it now on the site, I was hoping you had them here." and he proceeded to call me a liar and says it was a fake site.....
i have actually been looking into this. Instead of a case though, i was thinking on one of those water coating opinions, some companies offer. It's quite expensive though....

You can really bust his chops when I called life proof about the auto brightness issue they offered me a replacement and I said no I'll switch out at best buy and asked them if I could get the 10 water protection plan they offer and she informed me that you can only get it from Verizon and the lifeproof website that's it lol... NFC works great and the abeam thing not sure about the wireless charging the back is not thick at all its about the same as a tpu case in my opinion

I've looked into those a little and didn't trust them lol I'm very finicky at times about case and so far the fre seems to be well worth it and I have the otter box defender sview armor a tpu one and now the fre and this one is the best IMO only if I could get the sview mixed with the life proof lol

Just an FYI, I just bought the Qi Wireless charging back & charging pad, and the Lifeproof Nuud for my Sprint Galaxy S4 L-720, and it does maintain the waterproof seal with the wireless charging back on the device inside the lifeproof.
So you can't use any screen protector with this?
Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk
Do they offer all the other accessories as well, like they do for the iPhone version? Armband, bike mount, go pro mount? I didn't see any of them listed for the S4 on their website. I'm debating between this and Seidio's OBEX case.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Nope. No accessories. Also, they're now on Amazon and by what I can tell they're the official cases. $57 for the Nuud and $51 for the Fre.

Lifeprrof nuud
I grabbed one from bestbuy as well for 95 its worth it except for the fact that the person on the other line can not hear me as well about half the time. Its frustrating to yell, I have contacting the lifeproof and they create a case file and say that they will get back to me asap its been a day now. When i emailed my complaint to otterbox they got on it right away. The otterbox defender doesn't work with the GS4 at all due to the hole for us to be able to use the button, eventually particles get underneath their screen protector and after use you move the particles scratching your surface or denting it. The defender also dented and scratched the bezel on the phone

When swapping to the fre did you return your nuud to the bestbuy or file a complaint for it? And if you did return to bestbuy did you return the scratch protector that they have in the box? Thanks in advance!
As for the screen protector you can use one. I put full Ghost armour Carbon Fiber (Blue) on with my Life proof and it looks bad ass with the Matte screen too. Well worth the LifeProof.
I've had my LifeProof since almost the day it was released at Best Buy with no issues. I had an issue at first with the sound coming through my ear piece but by simply turning the volume down it fixes it.

awkward design but useful
Lifeproof or obex..mhmm what should I buy

Obex is the only one I haven't tried. I've been through two otterbox preservers. They have a winner there if they can fix the mesh covers on the speakers.
