Return my S4 for a Maxx? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to Verizon, and I got my phone from Amazon. So I've got 30 days to decide if I want to keep it. I got a Galaxy S4 but honestly I should have known better. The battery life is just not getting me through my day. I thought about getting an extended battery for it instead, but the phone with an extended battery plus even a thin TPU case seems to be around 5/8" thick. By contrast, the Maxx with its big battery (which is smaller than the extended S4 battery, sure, but still 3500mAh should get me through the day) is barely any thicker than what I currently have so it's easily pocketable.
The concern I have is the display - I really like the 1080p display on the S4 but I know that the pixel density is way overkill. Has anybody else gone backwards in resolution? How does the display on the Maxx/Ultra look if you're used to 1080p? I'm sure performance is fine. Touchwiz is heavy as far as skins go so I expect the Maxx to be pretty darn snappy even with just a dual core because it has 2GB of RAM. 32GB of storage is plenty.

I am using both a DNA and the Maxx daily, so it's 1080p LCD vs. 720p AMOLED. While the screen on the S4 (and the One) are very good, they're not so much better that I think that I am looking at a lower end phone with the Maxx's screen. The screen on the Maxx is still decent, even if it's got annoying AMOLED qualities (over saturation, purple tint at low brightness) but it's fine.
If battery is a problem on the S4, and you don't want to be switching out battery packs, return it for the Maxx.

Orsum. Now if only Amazon would get them in stock. I'm going to be calling them tonight about it, and hopefully they'll at least let me place my order. I can get by on a Droid X2 a little longer. :crying:
I talked to VZW to see if I could return my S4 to Amazon and get the Maxx through them and they're like yea, but you have to cancel your contract through them and then open a new one with VZW. But my contract has 3 lines and 2 of them are happy with their phone. I wouldn't make them do that just for me. I'm kinda stuck. lol

Interesting... Did you open up a Verizon account through Amazon recently? Sounds like you didn't since you have an X2.
If you didn't, then you should just be able to return the S4 and get your upgrade back, then go to the Verizon store and (trade in your X2) upgrade there. Doesn't matter where you do the upgrade if you can just return it to where you got the new device from.

I did actually just open my account. The X2 is a spare I acquired because when I first got my S4 and my wife's S4 BOTH of them had to be replaced almost immediately (hers just died and wouldn't power on; mine had the speaker go out so it never ran). I didn't want to go without a phone and neither did my wife so I picked this thing up on my local Craigslist and transferred her number to it while hers was replaced, and then transferred my number to it while mine was replaced. So this is a brand new account.
I was told by Amazon via email that basically that's what I can do though. Return the phone, get my subsidized device purchase price back as a refund, and buy the Maxx on subsidy when it's available.

Oy, that's a hassle. Although... if you just open a line and bring your own device, even "through" Amazon, if they release you from the 2 Year Contract on your line, shouldn't you just be on month-to-month at that point, using the Droid X2? And then, can't you just go to a Verizon store then sign a new contract there? Seems odd that Verizon won't let you do that, though it could just be the individual wanting you to do everything through them instead.
I know Amazon adds a few extra stipulations in their agreement, but I don't know if they lock you in like that where you can only purchase through them.

Well, Amazon says they will refund the purchase on the original phone, so what I plan to do is send it back, let them refund me, and then see if I have an "upgrade" on the Verizon website. If I do I'll just buy through them or go into the local store and pick it up. If not, then I will call them and worst case is I'll have to wait for Amazon to get it in stock.
Might have to pick up another phone if I have to wait, though. This X2 is seriously laggy.

I had an S4 with AT&T and I opted for the Maxx on verizon (needed to swap carriers anyway).
I really don't regret it. The camera on the S4 is lightyears better than what we have, and that does really bother me, but I can't leave this battery life anymore. The screen difference is noticeable... especially with a screen protector. No idea why but I swear something about a protector magnifies pixels a bit. But it's not a deal breaker for what I do with a phone anyway.

Thanks for the input guys. The S4 is back in Amazon's possession and I'm just waiting for the Maxx to come in stock, already have the order placed. I was warned that it could be a while so I'm getting an OG RAZR Maxx on Swappa so I'm not stuck with this X2 for now.

[Q] Would you get the Charge again?

With possible tiered data plans looming on Verizon, I'm now in the market for a smartphone. I want to get in with unlimited data. I'm in a 4G area, and want a 4G phone. I'm trying to decide which to get. Currently I'm leaning toward the Charge.
From those who actually own this device, would you get it again, or would you go with something else? Are you happy with the dev work, or other phones are better? Sell me, one way or the other.

well..let me help...I love the CHARGE...and I had a Thunderbolt for 6 months.......I happen to like the fact that the CHARGE has kinda a flimsy battery cover..to me..since it is "flimsy" it makes it lighter then the Thunderbolt....
as far as battery life..it never really affected me because I have an extended battery for my Charge and I also had one for more Thunderbolt....so they both lasted me the day...the only con I find with the Charge compared to the TB is that with the Thunderbolt whenever you got new e mail or txt message there was and LCD that flashed on the device....with the Charge...there is no LCD notification.....let me ad..that is not a deal breaker...for me...the charge is a better phone...and yes...I rooted and had custom roms on both.....and I rooted right away so can not give you a comparision stock LOL
I finally took the plunge and got a charge. I was always a sense guy. I loved the incredible, even with its horrific battery (before froyo and rooting). Thus the thunderbolt was the natural pick for me. But i needed a phone for phone calls, and the voice quality on that phone was lacking. A lot. So i finally sold off my thunderbolt and got a charge. I hate Samsung 's touchwiz and the stock apps are nothing compared to the stock sense ones, but there are some great alternatives in the market. My charge works great with launcherpro, the go dialer and handcent.
The orange theme though needs to go. Whichever Samsung or Verizon person thought up the brown and orange theme needs to get his eyes checked. And seriously reconsider his life decisions. Thank goodness for xda !
But i love the hardware. Made the thing worth it. Feels great in hand and i love the little thing.

Word has it that the tired data plans are only for new plans and that existing customers - even those that upgrade after the tired plans are in effect will not be affected. My referance: droid-life.com/2011/06/21/current-verizon-customers-wont-be-affected-by-tiered-data-only-new-customers-and-lines/
As for the charge - I was thinking that I should wait for a dual core phone with the latest and greatest processor but this phone is plenty fast and the network has much more an effect on usability than how fast a quadrant score you get.
"whenever you got new e mail or txt message there was and LCD that flashed on the device....with the Charge...there is no LCD notification"
I use the highly-rated noled, available on the android market, to handle notifications and it works well for me. I don't miss the dedicated led that was on my Droid 1.

Wow, did not even realize our stock Droid Charges were xda-themed...
LOL, never really noticed the similarity between xda and Charge's color theme. Clearly similar, but it's much more orange and stark on the Charge. On my MacBook the forum here looks brown and shades of off-white/tan, not dark brown and stark orange.
To the OP, no, in hindsight I would not buy the Charge again, especially at this late date. I bought it because I love SAMOLED screens, and I wanted a second LTE unlimited data phone on the family plan before they went away.
My suggestion at this point is if you want to buy an LTE phone for that reason, buy either the Charge or the TB in the next week or two AT COSTCO. You'll lock into the data plan, but Costco gives you 90 days to swap the phone for a different model if you're not happy with it. Hopefully the Bionic or Galaxy S 2 or some LTE phone that actually has a nice screen and decent battery life and non-lagged performance will be out and you can swap for it.
Thanks all for your feedback. And the note about Costco is very interesting. I saw the other day they were selling it for $180, with extras.
I'm looking to find more information about the %20 corp discount change. Currently my wife has that on her line, and it's not something I'd be happy about loosing if that's the case.
I'm digging this phone. Like the screen and its physical buttons. Lte is great and plentiful in my area. Going to root and flash gummycharge when I get home.

Definitely go with the charge... no boot loader locks, easy odin flashing, plenty of dev work, best looking non iphone screen on the market, great battery life, comes with a 32gb sdcard,

I would get it again, but if I were already on a Fascinate (or other SGS phone) and looking to upgrade without the intention of locking in unlimited 4G/data, then I'd stay with what I had. Regardless of what you have now, if you're looking to upgrade to a 4G phone, I'd say the Charge is the one to have.

This is not entirely correct. Existing smartphone users will not be affected, if you already have unlimited data, you're good. If you don't have it on July 7th, you're not getting it, period.

Oh wow nice idea, 90 days is quite some time.
Yeah, I just picked up my Charge yesterday to lock in my lte data. I always buy at costco, I'll be good to pick up any phones that come out until the end of August. By the way, the computers for Verizon code 4g and 3g differently in the system, even if they cost the same. I spoke to the rep there and he showed my fascinate line was a 3g device and the charge said 4g device in Verizon's system on his screen. He said the change happened a month or so ago. I called customer service and she said she couldn't comment on unreleased information, but "hypothetically" if you have a 3g plan and are grandfathered, and then get a 4g phone after unlimited goes away, even though the 4g plans cost the same, you will be seen as having a different data package in Verizon's system and be forced to pay the tiered pricing. Verizon isn't stupid.

Just to clarify.........
I have an SGS (Vibrant), but am going to switch to Verizon soon (before 6 July). I called a Verizon Customer Service rep yesterday and asked about the data info. Long story short, If you have "an unlimited data plan" (3G/4G - doesn't matter), you will be grandfathered in to the unlimited data for $30 until you upgrade your phone or 2 years, whichever is first. If you get a new phone withing the next two years, you will be forced into the new tiered data plan. If you keep the same phone for two years, at the end of that 2 years, you will be forced to switch to the tiered data plan. AT&T is doing the same thing once it acquires T-Mobile. Hope this helps and clarifies info for someone.
-Adam
Well that goes against what Droid-Life is saying, and AC and Engadget are repeating, that existing smartphone customers will be able to keep their existing unlimited plans when they upgrade. That's what most of the data out now suggests, and the fact that some CSR's are repeating it and there seems to be a few documents out now seems to confirm it. There's a pretty huge difference between us being able to upgrade and keep unlimited or not after the 7th, and VZW can't afford to have confusion being spread by their employees. So I would think that if they were not allowing us to upgrade keeping unlimited, they would have made it very clear to their employees from the beginning, rather than leaving it ambiguous, or even suggesting something that wasn't true.
Regardless, if we accept that as true, which most people do at this point, we still don't know what they'll count as a change or not. People who bought smartphones off ebay but never got a smartphone when renewing their contract likely won't be eligible, since they aren't technically smartphone customers in VZW's system. We also don't know if people switching to or from Blackberries and iPhones will be counted as having the same plan as an Android device. And the big question is whether someone with an unlimited 3g plan can get a 4g device and keep that unlimited plan. There doesn't seem to be any difference between the plans, but there definitely is, and they could definitely force you to switch to tiered if upgrading to an LTE phone. They haven't said this will be the case, but there hasn't been any info to suggest it won't be.
For this reason alone I'd definitely buy the Charge again. I had no smartphone before, and was able to buy the best LTE smartphone available before D-Day nearly a month ago for $150. I'm locked in to LTE unlimited at least with this phone, and the only "if" is whether VZW will allow us to upgrade to a similar device and keep the plan, since I'll only be going to another LTE Android in the future I'm sure. It won't matter to me whether they distinguish between 3g and 4g plans.
But yeah, the device itself is great, too! Best screen on the market, awesome camera and the ffc is decent, the shape is quite nice once you get used to it, battery life is quite good considering what it is and how heavily I use it, there's a ton of development with much more likely to come, and the SGS platform is still strong hardware. Sure, its not the most powerful thing around anymore by any means, but it'll hold its own, especially with some help from the awesome devs! So yeah, it'll get old after awhile, but I expect the development will keep me happy for quite some time. And there's nothing out there that would be worth missing out on unlimited 4g data for. I REALLY don't want tiered, even if I have to upgrade at full price from here on out.

My wife and I were in the same position. We both had blackberries and were able to get new phones in June. I heard about the tiered data BS so I started looking for phones so I could lock in unlimited 4G.
After searching/reading about Verizon's 4G phones, I decided to go with the charge with the TB being a close second. What made the decision for me was the screen and the better battery life. (I just got the phone 2 days ago... wife gets hers today)
What I like about the Charge:
Screen is the best I have seen. Really looks great.
Battery life is reasonable
What I don't like:
Cheap plastic construction. (Although I will be putting mine in a holster w/screen cover... so I guess light plastic is better than metal which would get covered anyway). And when I say cheap... I mean cheap. It seems like it is a very soft plastic between the bezel and the back plate. I already got a small nick in mine and I have been babying it until I get a case. Buttons feel good and screen looks great but the chassis sucks.
Worse-than-usual terrible verizon bloatware. Seriously Verizon. **** YOU. If I want all your crap, I would download it. At least make it deletable you ****ing assholes. Ohhh... and thanks for the non-deletable bookmarks to your ****ty websites. I will be rooting and freezing this PURE UNADULTERATED CRAP asap.
No case included with the phone. Even a cheap slip-on plastic sleeve would be nice to tide you over until you have time to order a case.
I don't have much experience with Android (have a couple month old Transformer) but I am pretty sure I am going to hate touchwiz. A lot of things are just plain weird about it.
Anyway, if you have any specific questions, ask away. One other thing to consider is that the TB will have a lot larger dev community than the charge. Then again, as long as I can root and get a good ROM I don't care that much.

I was a proud owner of DROID X and the fact that it is metal, solid and heavy, everyone who tried and held it thought it screamed high quality. Then I bought the latest TPU (google it) cover skin for the DROID X because I had every intention of dumping it once VZW came with 4G phone. With the TPU skin on, my friends' frame of mind was completely changed. Since they can't touch and feel the cold metal surface, their subsequent reaction was that the phone is way too heavy, how could you carry a brick like that in your khaki pants, you're going to kill me with that, aren't ya?, etc., etc. It was comical. Fast forward 11 months, they're touching and feeling my Droid Charge that's also covered with TPU skin. Their first reaction was, "wow what a screen. This thing fits so nicely in the hand and soooo light, and they can fit all that power in a small and extremely light package, and still have similar sized, 4.3" screen as your old Droid X" (paraphrased). I showed them the two phones, side by side, in their TPU skins with the same "Verizon red" color. FYI, the TPU skin has a semi rigid, smooth and shinny skin. It hides the Droid Charge's thin plastic (spelled light) body and gives it a rigid feel to it, not unlike the similarly skinned DROID X. My 2c.

Exactly. First of all, I have absolutely ZERO trust in anything that Verizon says... and less than zero trust in anything their reps say. My wife and I had 3G unlimited plans for $30 (Blackberry). Personally, I would have waited until the newer phones came out in a couple of months before switching... but at this point all we have is a "promise" (do we even have that really?) that we could get grandfathered in. I am guessing that the new iPhone 5 will have 4G and they will want to get people off the unlimited plans because netflix and the like are going to absolutely hammer their bandwidth otherwise.
In short, my unlimited plan MAY have carried over... but there is nothing in writing saying that it will. With a new contract, I am safe and can cancel if they change my terms after-the-fact. I wouldn't be surprised if on July 7th they issue a clarification on the issue after it is too late.

Wait for the Charge or not?

So Verizon has now announced they will cap data which makes this even harder.
The price of the charge is too much currently because I don't have a job. Hopefully will have one here soon but that is still any where from 2 - 4 weeks from a possible first pay check.
I would like to have the charge but unless the price drops tomorrow I am not sure it will happen. I want to get grandfather with unlimited data hopefully and was wondering should I wait a risk it or go for a sub $200 phone?
If so which one?
Wait
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App
Well depends on what you are looking for. I could have waited, but the 4.3" SuperAmoled screen, the hard buttons, and the camera/camcorder sold me. To me that made sense instead of waiting on this Bionic that may surface later, with probably the same crappy motorola camera. Beleive me, I have had original Droid and Droid X and although great phones I still love my Droid Charge over them. I have grown to love Samsung phones.
Well I would love the charge for the screen and 4g capabilities but at the same time it is still new and has its issues.
The reason for me having to wait would be for a job and to get the money to pay for it. My parents are will to pay for a sub $200 smart phone. They both have the Droid X's.
Is the wait for 4g worth it or for the next two years will 3g still be the leader or will 4g have taken over? With the charge part of the thought was that I would be future proofing myself you could say for the 4g to come.
Not sure if this changes your situation at all, but costco has the Charge for 179.99 which is by far cheaper than everywhere else. Just got mine yesterday. Great deal plus you get 90 days to exchange the phone if you don't like it. I will likely never get a phone through anyone but Costco going forward as long as this policy and their great pricing is in place.
How would I go about getting it from there if I already am on a plan with Verizon and I just want to upgrade my phone?
sam's
Sam's is actually cheaper than Costco, cause they give you a sale price and not a rebate, they dont charge tax on the full 300 like Costco.. that being said.. Costco does free activation and free accessories.
Also online from Sams it is 130. In store still 175.
Is it possible to get the phone itself and upgrade or do you have to get the plan through store? Cause if so I don't think that will work for me.
Costco has this phone on sale(until Jul6th or 7th I think) for $179.99, they give a free extended warranty, free car charger, 2 free screen protectors and a free leather case that clips onto your belt(that's where I got my charge, I really only cared about the discount but look at all the free crap!) Also I think Amazon just lowered their price of the Charge to $179.99 as well, just doesn't come with free crap.
I could have waited for the Galaxy S2 to hit Verizon(or the U.S. in general) but that seems to be ages away, especially considering the tiered data plans are coming on the 7th, same reasons I didn't wait for the Bionic, and neither of them have physical buttons(the GS2 has a physical home but the other 2 are capacitive and that sucks.. seriously that would have been a flawless phone if they hadn't done that)
Thanks to you guys telling me about the other sites selling the charge for cheaper then from Verizon I was able to order it today.

We should all hit Motorola hard across the face for this....

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/atandt-atrix-hd-priced-at-99-coming-july-15/
So not only is our phone being pushed aside by a new phone that does not completely reign above it in tech specs, but it's coming out this Sunday for $99.....
I'm hitting them by never giving them my business or recommending them to any of my clients. I own a small delivery company and have a PC sales and repair business on the side.so I talk to alot of people during the day and get asked for my opinion on phones often.
Motorola lied and I'm still locked mb865
Just go buy the SGS 3 I promise you will be so much happier... go sell your A2 on Ebay for 200 while you still can (before the next atrix HD is out), and put that toward an SGS 3 off contract....

I have always gotten a feeling of cheaply made hardware from Samsung, though (including the Galaxy S3 as I played with one in-depth at an AT&T store recently). Also, my full upgrade eligibility date is around the end of September which isn't all that far off...plus if I upgrade through Best Buy Mobile before the end of the year they'll give me a $50 gift card on the spot for doing so (they had a promo earlier in the year that you could sign up for).

I have always thought the same thing about Samsung Galaxy hardware, but this is the first one that I have not thought that about, and it is really a HUGE step forward for hardware in a phone. It has LTE, NFC, HD display a dual core 1.5 GHZ CPU that can overclock stable to 1.9 GHZ, and it is butter smooth even with out JB on it... so when JB comes with CM 10, it will be just crazy!!! And the Dev support is nothing short of amazing, and it has only been in peoples hands a little less than a month.
Just like with the A2 I can't say enough good things about it. Don't discount it, I promise it will not disappoint, and it does not have ANYTHING locked down.
When you come up for your upgrade in sept. think about it, and give it a shot.

So not only is our phone being pushed aside by a new phone that does not completely reign above it in tech specs, but it's coming out this Sunday for $99.....

it actually reminds me of the crap M$ pulled with the Zune...
Yes, I bought a Gen2 Zune back then because I am anti-Apple...before Android was a thing... and M$ pushed it aside and made the Zune HD, with little to no support or upgrades on the original two generations and their loyal buyers.
OOPS, WE SCREWED THAT ONE UP, LETS START OVER. You just know behind the scenes there are ****ty programmers and even ****tier managers making poor decisions.
If I had the money, the Nexus would be my choice, but I have kids to feed.

GO to best buy, and trade the A2 in toward the SGS 3, and use the $50 credit, and you might have to pay 50 bucks... heck I traded my inspire in at BB and I only payed 99 for it, and they gave me 100 for it, and gave me a $50 gift card, so I got the phone for free plus a case and a 32GB SDcard all with out having to pay 1 dollar for the A2....
Just something to think about.
If this phone is locked down to AT&T like our A2 was it will be another epic fail for MOTO!!! Funny how Samsung doesn't bow down to AT&T but MOTO caters to their every whelm. Which goes back to the finger pointing, MOTO says it's up to the carriers and the carriers say it's up to the manufacturer.
I want the SG3... something fierce. I've tried to sell my girlfriend's A2 on eBay and Craig's List -to no avail. She upgraded to it from the first A4G, but doesn't care either way about it. To her, its a phone, and just a phone! Listed at about the sane price as would be the $199.00 new two year contract price.
Question: I see this "feedback" deal here on XDA on my profile and others. So, is that for 1) people selling old or unused devices, and 2) would there be audience here that would prove to have more interested parties to buy other than eBay or Craigslist?

Go to Best buy and get the $50, gift certificate, and do the phone buy back, they should give you 100-150 as a buy back for the A2 even if Craigslist and ebay don't get you a sale.
Just something to go try!

It will be business as usual for moto... heck, they just re-locked the bootloader on the OG Atrix with the last updated... so...
I would assume the worst here.

You can trade in mobile phones for gift cards at Best Buy...you could trade in the Atrix 2 for $150 in good condition - I just checked.

That's $150 for basically a mint-condition Atrix 2 without a single blemish or nick on the surface/body of the phone anywhere, with the original box, original paperwork, USB charger and cable, etc... now, while a lot of folks keep all that stuff around, not everyone does. I got my Atrix 2 from a pawn shop and while it's in great shape (just a tiny nick on the back side where the plastic surrounding the camera lens is), I don't have any of the other contents so I'd be looking at $50-90 tops, sadly.
Can sell it on craigslist for $125 cash in a few hours more than likely... been considering it based on a) the infamous locked bootloader fiasco and b) AT&T taking their sweet freakin' time with ICS even if Motorola has it ready to go (they probably do at this point, who knows).
I hate companies that make great products then do something stupid with them like the bootloader crap. Sony, ruined years ago. Motorola, getting worse by the day. And don't even get me started on Apple.
I sense that the battery is going to really suck on that new atrix hd.... think about it, the battery is approximately 1700 Mah (like our atrix 2) with a bigger screen, higher resolution and Lte , hopefully the snapdragon wont be a drainer but its still clocked higher than the current atrix 2....
its gonna be problematic like the droid razr...
Go for the Razr Maxx or the upcoming Razr Hd that's the one I'm gonna go for, switching to Verizon when that comes out!

That is not totally true... I sold back my inspire 4G to BB when I got the A2, and they gave me 100 gift car for it, and I only paid 99 for it new... and I did not have the box the usb cable or the charger... it was just the phone, heck I even had CM9 rooted and running on it... they told me they did not care, and they even waited while I wiped my data off the phone. They are just going to recycle it, and re-sell it to you as a refurb, or use it as a replacement for thier BB "geak squad" protection.
Might have to look into that with my own Atrix 2 then, but I think in the long run I'd still rather have cold hard cash in the hand than some damned gift certificate/card, especially at Worst Buy. Sorry, had to say it as I've dealt with their crap over the years and still do whenever someone brings me a laptop to fix/optimize/repair and the first words from the client are "I took it to Geek Squad and..." or I spot the stupid little pink sticker on the bottom that confirms yes they did get it hosed/looked over at some Best Buy location.
I'm really disappointed in Motorola at this point. The Atrix 2 is one very nice piece of hardware start to finish, but it's hamstrung by these stupid restrictions. It's more than capable of running Jelly Bean even in spite of missing a few features (no NFC, no "recommended" quad core CPU, etc) but we'll never ever see it and the phone is barely 9 months old.
Seems like the "cycle of obsolescence" is just increased, like Moore's Law I suppose. A few years ago you could count on a solid up within a given period of time (and 9 months to get ICS is ridiculous, period, it just is any way you slice it) and now it looks like companies are literally taking the track of producing somewhat high-end smartphone hardware and 6 months later it's effectively given the heave ho and dismissed for the next big thing.
This is a really sad way of doing things and making the "disposable society" that much worse, every minute that passes.

Yeah I gotta say BB is worst buy... they really do suck... The only reason I got my A2 from them was the trade in, I hated the Inspire and had to get rid of it and I could not give it away and AT&T does not buy back, so... they really are the only game if you intend to trade your old phone back in for a new one.
And the customer service at BB is absolute crap. I fried my A2s bootloader 31 days of owning it, and BB threw the 30 day policy at me... I went literally across the street to the AT&T corp store and walked out with a replacement phone.
But again if you want to trade the A2 for any other phone go to BB and get the 100-150 bucks for it, before it drops lower.
If I had the money (and the good credit) I'd be all over a Galaxy Note right now but, that's a wish that'll never come true so...
Ain't nothing at Best Buy I want to be honest, the Wife still wants a Nook Color/Tablet but, it's just slightly out of our price range for the present/foreseeable future, still on the wish list (but that might actually be doable).
But I can honestly say I'll never directly purchased another Motorola phone unless it's a) branded as a Google Nexus product and b) it has an unlocked bootloader or can be unlocked as easily as "fastboot oem unlock" - I'm just not going to compromise from now on.
Honestly I think a lot of people are moving towards only Nexus-branded hardware. I had a Nexus S recently for a short period of time and it was a blast to own, great piece of hardware and now I find myself wishing I still had it in some respects more than this Atrix 2.
Atrix 2 with Jelly Bean native... that would be a great piece of hardware to own, wouldn't it? It's a crying shame, really.

Worth it in 2021/22?

Looking to get one of these for my daughter. She broke her Nokia 7.1 display and asked for something that takes better pictures if we're replacing her phone anyway. I had Gcam running on that Nokia but I think an actual Pixel would do her better, and just run smoother too.
With the current prices for used/refurbed, I think a P3 XL would be great, even if there are no more updates for it.
What do you guys think? Any versions to avoid or issues to look out for? Someone mentioned that battery life is iffy especially on a used model, but she's not a power user (mostly music, some messages and calls and occasional selfies with friends- no social media or browsing).
Good idea or bad idea?

I think it's a good idea, with some caveats. Excellent for the mentioned needs, but as said, even if it's described as 'Mint', odds are the battery has been cycled hundreds of times.
This is listed on ebay for 219, brand new, unlocked. I've bought from that seller and they are reputable for sure. At least going that route you won't have to worry about the battery.
Yeah no more official updates from google, but Lineage will continue to make builds for this device for (probably) years to come.
Absolutely worth considering.
Things to look out for - a locked bootloader. Verizon and AT&T phones have locked bootloaders. You can't install LOS with a locked bootloader, so no more updates for those phones. Also, when sellers say the phone is unlocked, they mean the SIM is unlocked, not the bootloader.
I'd go with a new, unused phone if you can still find one. Besides battery on a used phone, there is this problem to consider. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/fix-pixel-3-qusb_bulk_cid-xxxx_sn-xxxxxxxx.4205331/
I just had my Pixel 3 battery replaced at uBreakIfix for $100. The original battery lasted 2 years. I could have nursed it along a few months more, but decided it was time.
Also consider a new Pixel 2, if you can find one. I bought a new Pixel 2 XL a couple of months ago. It was much cheaper than the Pixel 3s were going for.

Yikes, the battery bit that hard over 2 years, huh?
I bought a Galaxy S10 used that still has decent battery, and my LG G7 which is around the same generation as the Pixel 3 still can go all day. Is the Pixel battery just more prone to conking out early? She could use my LG but honestly I sold her on the Gcam, dual selfies and unlimited google photo storage (she's been using compressed storage for photos since it was free on all phones, and missed the memo about losing all her storage space earlier this year).
Here's the thing:
If I get it from Swappa, it comes with a 3-month Mint SIM trial prepaid. She's on Google Voice so I tend to swap plans around whenever there's a deal, so that knocks about $45 off the price of the phone since I'd be otherwise paying that $15 a month elsewhere. Still worth getting new over that deal? There are pretty mint ones (9 out of 10 condition) for under $150 there, so total would be ~$100 after service discount.

The battery would still last me all day, but it would discharge very fast once it got under 30%. I figured I'd rather replace it than risk losing the phone at a bad time.
As for price, it all depends on what deals you find. I paid $120 for the new Pixel 2 XL a couple of months ago. I get my service for $10 a month (with 500 Mb of data) from RedPocket. I'm quite satisfied with those numbers.
That's a good deal. Can't find a Pixel 2 right now new. I was paying $10 a month for 1GB of data previously but she's constantly running out from google photos and spotify, so was planning on moving up to $15 for 4GB on Mint anyway. Especially right now, buy 3 months get 3 free. So essentially 7.50 a month for the next 6 months!
However... if I get the free sim from Swappa its probably only 3 months. Either way, a good deal. If I buy new from Ebay (even if I could find it), I'd still have to pay for a Mint sim

I recently bought a 'Mint' Lg G8 on swappa, and it 'looked' pretty close to mint, very light small scratches on back. But when I modified the rom so I could see the 'svc menu', the battery stat indicated it had been fully cycled about 280 times. Research indicates a battery should last from 300 to 500 cycles. And just like dcarvil, this G8, when it gets to about 30%, it' drops fast. Incredibly fast.
Other phones I've bought on swappa that were 'open box', actually were exactly that, virtually new. Now we see sellers describe it as 'open box'... without the box!!
It's all anecdotal, some good, some bad, we take our chances.
cheers, good luck.
The Pixel 3 XL is still a great phone and should last a while. The processor is about the same as the Pixel 5.
I would recommend looking on Swappa as it is stricter than Ebay on quality and even a Fair Swappa phone is quite good and should describe the defects in the listing.
On swappa, the cheapest verizon and sprint 3 XL are under $100, but the Google or Tmobile version (which can be boot-loader unlocked and rooted are up to $150. Also notice that at $200 and above you can even get the Pixel 4 XL. Also, the 3a XL may be a cheap option, but it has slower processors so not as good, but still better than the old Nokia 7.1.
I definitely recommend one where the boot-loader is unlock-able as it opens up many options. To stay completely stock or unlock and use any OS build she would like.

I found a swappa 128 gb in good condition for $120, and it's supposed to be the Google version so bootloader unlockable!
Just ordered it. I've heard mixed things about the latest A12 roms, so I like the idea of keeping it unlockable for customs. Are there are any good aftermarket roms that stay close to stock re: network function (VOLTE)?
I've have bad experience with Lineage based roms in the past because networks like Tmobile where I live rely on VOLTE for decent calling support.

Well yes it is different. LG and Sammy for sure have proprietary IMS implementations, I'm not sure about Moto. What that means is that if the proprietary implementation can't be ported, then things like volte will only work on stock.

Question Upgrading to z flip 4?

Hi guys!
Just wondering what are your thoughts on upgrading to the z flip 4?
All the beans have been spilled on the specs and design already. So we pretty much know what will be offered by Samsung.
So, are you guys excited for it? Upgrade is a must? Or is it just mehhhh.....
On my side, I have no interest in upgrading. I'm still astonished that the cameras will be the same... I find no reason to upgrade. Only positive I find is the little bit bigger battery, nothing else.
So, what's your thoughts??
No, it's not worth it for me, I'd have to pay off my existing contact first (£455) and from what I've been reading there's nothing really ground breaking about it.
Most likely I will go to Fold4 ...
Far away from beeing rich enough lol
No way I'd upgrade, this phone is working great for me. Also once the warranty is up, i'll start to flash GSI's etc.
Just got my Flip 3, and with trade in value, plus $100 pre-registration bonus from Samsung... if the price for the 4 is right, I'll upgrade. I've only had the 3 for a short time, and while I like it, not having dex is actually a bigger deal than I thought it would be. I really do like to use it.
nothing to upgrade for
Beings I'm paying $30 a month for this AT&T Next Up deal where you can get a new phone every year I see no real reason why not to! I dont see anything better coming out in the near future! 12 x $30 = $360 I paid for the Flip 3, I think I got my moneys worth! Only thing sucks is that I'll probally have to buy another case for it but oh well! Might just wait till Black Friday (November) though and see if Sams Club (or Best Buy or somewhere) will offer a $600 in store gift certificate to upgrade like they used to before all the Covid crap started and I'll really come out on top! Free phone for a year plus a little extra cash to go with it wont hurt my feelings!! I used to play that game every year!! LOL!
Well it doesnt look like that AT&T Next Up deal wasnt quite the deal I thought it was after all. Seems you must have to have the phone half paid off as I had to fork out and extra $200 plus $60 in taxes. I've been wanting the Flip 4 and a little better battery life cant hurt so I went ahead and did it and and with the trade in deal their giving me the 256gb model and a free case, I guess that makes it a wee bit better, but $500+ for phone rental per year Im not quite too sure! Sounds like I need to pay cash when buying new and get the big trade in or go back to buying used models on Craiglist like I used to do back in the day! I also bought a Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46mm from Samsung refurfished on Ebay for $209 recently (which turned out to be brand new from the best I can tell) so that makes it a bit better also! Oh well, like my old man used to tell me "you only live once!"!!!
Not worth the upgrade, it hasn't received changes at all, it's almost a copy of the Flip 3, but with a little bit better internals. The upgraded processor? You don't really need it, the 888 is already quite a powerful processor, the battery? Quite an upgrade, I must admit, plus the new adaptive 1-120hz display, it must have a good battery life. The camera? The photos on the Flip 3 are already great, and even better with gcam. Would I pay ~500€ for just a better battery? (Considering I'm trading in my Flip 3)
Absolutely not.

Hi!
When you get the flip 4, give a update here, was the upgrade + cash spent worth it.
Thanks!

Well I lost the money I spent on the Flip 3 rental (but taken into account I'm getting the 256gb model for the price of a 128gb and a free case plus just got a Galaxy Watch 4 Classic for basically half off makes it a little better) but regardless I just got a tracking number for the Flip 4, its supposed to be here tomorrow. Oh and BTW, we have a whole section here devoted to the Flip 4, looks like quite a few folks done got thiers...........
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

Another interesting option that might be worth considering.........
I got to play with the Z Flip 4 yesterday at a T-Mobile store. They had it on display even though they're not shipping or in stock yet. Although the phone has been upgraded, performance-wise, I couldn't tell the difference between it and my Z Flip 3. Nothing stuck out about it or grabbed me to make me feel I have to upgrade. The phone is physically a little more streamlined but overall it's probably not worth upgrading from the Z Flip 3 unless you're getting the Z Flip 4 for free or at a drastically reduced price (Samsung and some of the carriers have good trade-in deals right now).
I'm gonna wait to see if the RAZR 2022 ever comes to the US and, if so, if my carrier will offer similar trade-in deals. If so, I'll get the RAZR 2022. I had the RAZR 5G and absolutely loved the external screen. I traded it in for the Z Flip 3 because the Z Flip 3 blew away the RAZR 5G on paper (the specs) and I got the Z Flip 3 for free with the trade-in but I immediately started missing that big external screen on the RAZR 5G. I used the RAZR's external screen just as much or maybe even more than the main screen. Even though there are now 3rd party apps to make the Z Flip 3 external screen more functional, the screen is just too small for me to use a lot - I'm still opening my Z Flip 3 for just about everything. The new RAZR 2022 is a massive upgrade over the RAZR 5G and the specs rival the ZFlip 4 but the bigger and much more functional external screen on the RAZR 2022 is the game changer for me.

Yeah I received mine yesterday and felt the same way, loaded up all my old apps and did everything except swaped sim cards and it pretty much felt the same in hand although I'm sure the upgraded battery will make things even better, allthough I'm not a power user and only had problems running down the battery just a relatively few times. Of course I had everything set up to save battery since I had the phone and always had a charger nearby for those just in case days!
Started crunching the numbers again yesterday evening and this morning and thinking about whether it was really going to be worth it, and with the AT&T Next Up deal where I had to have my 256gb Flip 3 half paid off ($1050/2 = $525) and give it back and then start making payments all over again on the Flip 4 (29.17 a month for 3 years =$1050.12) for a total of $1575 and it was absolutely not! I decided to return it to the AT&T store this morning and I'm going to go ahead and pay the Flip 3 off and go with the Samsung deal and trade in my yr old Flip3 plus $200 for the Flip4.
Will that be worth it? I figure with the extra battery life and better processor for $200 plus my old Flip 3 as a trade in it dang sure well ought to be especially if you're one of those who always has the urge for the latest and greatest! I do have to admit that new Razr sure does seem cool, but I've been using Samsung products for so many years and think I'll stick with them! Competition in the market for this new generation of flip phones is always a good thing though!
UPDATE: Boy they are quick, I ordered it a little before lunch this morning (Wednesday) and by this afternoon it was already in the mail and supposed to be here by Friday!
Got mine today. Samsung has a great trade-in program. You get a new 4, and I got $700 for my Flip 3 trade. So a little over $300 for a faster processor, and much larger battery. Easy choice.
I've read all the reviews, but I think the 4's crease is a little less deep than the 3. I feel it less. Otherwise I'm waiting to see how good this battery really is, as that was really my only complaint about the 3.
You can de-bloat it in minutes with ADB AppControl, kudos to those guys - removed or disabled over 140 bloatware apps Samsung installs. Which also works when updates come, the apps - and that stupid bixby and Samsung store/pay/AR crap stays disabled.
If I remember in a month I'll post back up with some further info.
I got my Z Flip 4 (unlocked) yesterday (8/29) from the pre-order deal. I have the Z Flip 3 (unlocked) already but the upgrade deal was too good to pass up. They offered me a $900 trade-in credit for the 3 plus an additional $60 off and a $100 Samsung Store credit. Cash out of pocket for the 4 was just $140 + sales tax. At that price I would have taken a new 3 just for a fresh battery & warranty! It sort of feels like that's what I did anyway. The 4 is virtually identical to the 3 in size and shape - so much so that the Samsung thin carbon fibre case from the 3 fits the 4 and the cutouts fit perfectly. The viewable area of the cover screen still fits in the case cutout.
I know that there a bunch of feature improvements and a bigger battery which I'll come to appreciate as time goes by but for now I'd have to say I'd be disappointed if I'd paid a lot more for the upgrade. Apparently Samsung knew this which is why they made the upgrade dirt cheap. If you don't have a 3 and are thinking about the 4, by all means go for it. It's a terrific phone. I loved the 3 and the 4 is even better.
I have disappointed myself... i went against my thoughts and beliefs.
I upgraded to the z flip 4
But! To make myself feel better, I have convinced myself that I got a good deal (swapped my flip 3 + 150€ to the flip 4).
And I got to say, the flip 4 feels good! Feels better built, the screen is brighter, screen protector feels smoother, snapdragon feels snappier and the closing of the phone feels more satisfying
The biggest upgrade I have felt is the battery. With the flip 3 I barely got through a day, sometimes had to recharge. But, with the flip 4 I go to sleep with 30-40% of battery.
So, my recommendation, if you get a GREAT deal on the flip 4, go for it. If not, flip 3 will get you through the next year to the flip 5, which should be a substantial upgrade.
I don't think it's necessary
Very nice job... Thanks for sharing this amazing Information!
