Why didn't you just buy this instead of going through all that trouble?

The reason is because I don't have anything obstructing my view on my windshield, nor any bulky contraptions. I hate every type of windshield mount or cup holder mount and the fact that the way that I put my orb in there with the wire practically hidden and the phone right in my line of sight as I'm driving questions how you can even ask me that. This is the best setup I've ever seen and of course it takes some work but it's well worth the time.
You wouldn't rather have a set up like this and not have your windshield view obstructed? Plus all of the wires are practically hidden. I have a retractable 3.5 mm audio wire that runs to my aux port in the car since I unfortunately don't have Bluetooth in the 06 civic.

30-Pin Dock Connector to Micro USB Data Adapter - CHARGE VIA USB!

Hey guys! Just a heads up on this USB adapter I snagged from USBfever:

IT ALLOWS YOU TO CHARGE VIA USB! It should, of course, be noted that it will probably not charge as fast as it would with the OEM charger or any 2 amp charger. But it does work. It didn't take long to get it (they ship from Hong Kong) and the price is worth it. I have also used it with my Sharper Image portable power pack with success. May have to get myself another one as a backup.
I bought the same one...
Also bought the SD/USB adapter and pickup a original galaxy tab dock for gen 1 model for a fiver down the market,
The dock is a tight fit but I dremeled a slit down the side so it fits much better....
MUST HAVE it too

I have one of those too, but is too tight of a fit for me to dare use it. That's not necessarily representative for other units though, as these chinese accessories don't exactly match up from batch to batch
After some more use I've discovered that while it will let me charge via usb it will not actually recognized that it's connected to a computer. But it was still worth not to carry that big block around with me.

Now that I have my Orb... what do I do with my pad?

No... It is sitting on the pad. I mounted the pad on a RAM mount diamond plate using 3M double sided adhesive tape. I then used some low compression, rubber weather stripping to form the "U" to cradle the phone. Fits like a glove and works perfect.
Total cost... 3 bucks (I already had the RAM hardware), a trip to Home Depot, and about a half hour of my time.
Looking at the pic, it's hard to tell if the power button is covered or not. If not, it looks good. Just get a nfc tag and setup everything. If it is, wouldn't it be more of a pain to get access for waking the phone up?
Just curious but excellent innovation.

The "U" comes up to just 1/4 inch below the power button, and that same clearance for the volume rocker.
I actually use a Tasker location profile so no nfc tag necessary.
Took it for its first extended test drive yesterday and it works well. Phone is very secure, and easily removed and replaced with one hand.

Any one got a S3?

So I'm looking at this bike mount, I know the phone will sit roughly well enough with the dimensions of the S3 being so similar, but my concern is the headphone jack and the camera position.
Does any one have access to a S3 to compare how well the nexus 4 would function in this mount:

Really appreciate the help, thank you
S3 is thinner. That might cause problems with that case closing

I have access to an S3, but not that case. In my experience, the nex 4 will fit in most s3 cases, however the power and volume buttons will not line up properly. The other issue is the headphone jack on the nex 4 is on the bottom, on the GS3, it's on the top. I would not count on that case working how you intend.
The phones dimensions are the same, the USB port lines up, the headphone port is closer to the centre on the s3 so that doesn't match, the camera on the n4 is in the same spot as the S3's flash so that's hopeful.
Just checked in a phone shop.
twinkie, do you have some magical Nexus 4 with the headphone jack on the bottom?
I've just bought the bike mount and will post up a full review when I get my hands on it

[Q] car dock designed specifically for Nexus 5?

Sorry if there's a thread that directly addresses this. Point me at it if there is! I searched but didn't find one.
I don't see any car mounts for the nexus 5 specifically. All I can find are fugly universal mounts. If I wanted to "mount" my phone via a gaint chip-clip, I'd just get a giant chip clip. Anyhow, I'm looking for a car mount designed specifically for the Nexus 5. Anyone have a link to one?
I really like the DIY wireless charging mount mods, but I worry about using magnets alone to hold my phone in place. I plan on getting a cheap mechanical mount (e.g. slot, clips) and adding Qi to that.
I use the Infiniapps Magnetic CD slot mount. It's not designed specifically for the Nexus 5, but it's not bulky or a hassle to use. Also, since the plates in the phone line up well with the magnets in the mount; you don't need to clamp it or anything. Just put the middle of the phone against it and it holds in place just fine. Portrait or landscape isn't a problem. No problems on bumpy rides or anything either.

I personally won't use Qi chargers in the car, as I use navigation a lot and stream music all the time. Don't want to have problems with heat. This mount doesn't get in the way, just pop in a USB cable to an Anker car charger and you're good to go.
i plan to buy this one from Dedicated Car / Vehicle 'Easy Fit' Air Vent Phone Mount for LG Google Nexus 5 from amazon

[REVIEW] UtorCase - Gaming Mount for XBox One, 360, PS4, PS3

This review is for the Samsung Galaxy S 5 UtorCase, but they make the mount for so many different phones at http://www.shapeways.com/shops/utor-case.
First - I did participate in, and win, a chance to own one of these mounts in exchange for my trial and review of the product. I am writing this based on my personal review and not any bias for having won the product. I am a long time member of this forum and would not want to tarnish my name for one product.
On to the review:
After receiving the mount I was a little nervous that it would not hold the phone to my controller. As you can see in the pictures it looks just like a flimsy piece of plastic. Apparently, it is 3D printed to fit whatever phone you have and the controller you choose to use it with. Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it held the phone just fine. It was very strong and held the phone to the controller at all angles. I was able to play games while either sitting on my couch, laying in bed, or when I took my most recent trip and played on the plane. It held on with no trouble at all. It was very easy to mount onto each device as well. A small tab at the rear attaches the mount to the controller and the S5 just sits in the top.
I am very impressed with this mount and would recommend it to anyone looking for a way to use their phone with an extra controller sitting around the house.
These pictures are from the website as my photos did not come out well. I will upload some soon
