In my CRS years it seems at the end of my day I tend to fall asleep while reading or working with my new Note 8.0. I'm using the excellent Poetic Revolution semi-rugged case as mu daily driver. Probelm.is putting the pen away involves flipping up a flap which, apparently, is too much work because I often fall asleep with the N8 and pen on my chest.
Well last night I seem to have fallen alseep then rolled over on the pen. The pen broke arond the inset cutout line near the upper end of the pen. Busted clean in two. A bit of PC11 marine epoxy should have it repaired in the next day or two give or take as it cures. Problem is somehow I set the top 180 degrees out so the flat side is of the upper portion is on the wrong side. Hopefully it will still slide in place for storage.
Point of my post is that cut out line around the upper end is pointless and needlessly weakens the s-pen's structure. Sadly to me it seems an intentionally induced point of failure. Of coruse that is while wearing my tinfoil hat. But wanted.to remind others of this very weak design so be careful with your S-pen and slip it back into it's cubbyhole when not in use.
I also learned the pen is HOLLOW which makes that portion of the pen even more fragile due to a thinner side wall.
At $29.99/pen on Amazon this is not an inexpensive screw up on my part. I have a backup beacusebof good luck and not good planning. But if I had not been lucky enough to grab a Wacom CS3002 work tomorrow would suck hard as my N8 is my goto tool throughout the day.
I wish there were not the reported offset issues with other than the Samsung original S-pen, 8pi and Wacom Bamboo Feel CS3002 (do note that part number as it apparently matters.) But the fragile original design serves only a single purpose and the lack of offset free options makes the $30-$40 replacement cost pretty beyond acceptable.
Still my fault but hard to swallow.
crap... d 'oh!! of course the pen won't fit back in the slot. It's designed to match the contour of the case. So looks like I'll have to re-break it after work... sigh...

Same has happened to my stylus after just fall on the floor.
As there is no replacement in the stores for note 8.0, am looking for a lot of offers for repacement of note II or note 10.1 styluses.
It looks like only colours are different.
So, can anyone confirm whether styluses from note II or 10.1 fits note 8 stylus pocket?
I ended up fixing mine with a a bit of gel type superglue and a section of wooden (round) toothpick to fill the hollow center & provide support. Worked perfectly and feels very solid.
I saw no reason to plank down $35 or whatever for a new pen.
BTW, far as I know none of the other S-pens fit the N8.

I suspect the pen differences will eventually be designed out ' well at least for tablet size devices of 6" or larger. I noticed the 10.1 2014 is close to the same thickness as our N8's. Actually the N8 & N10.1 are 8mm (O.31mm) and the N3 is 8.3mm (0.33in) which might be a nice move toward the possibility of a universal pen. I'm also guessing owners of the N10.1 will sort of be expecting a more "normal" size stylus. That aside my instinct is it's length not girth presenting the larger challenge moving to a unified Note family pen. We'll see once the production versions hit shelves.
Though my complaint is/was about the designed in point of failure and having to resort to "Red Green" style DIY (there I failed due to not using ANY Duct Tape). My real let down is with the feel of the Samsung branded larger pen, the 8Pi as it's far lighter than the regular pens I'm used to. That pushed me right to Wacom for their Stylus Feel for the Galaxy Note (model CS 3002). That pen feels just right to me for writing (I'm no artist). The girth is better as well.
Did the stylus on the N2 have the same cut-out band around the upper portion as on our N8's? If so maybe we were just "special" in breaking ours? I tend to doubt that though.

I have been a fan of the note series for some time now, ever since I got the note 2 phone. Then the note 10;1, and the note 8.0. Finally getting the cash lined up for a note 10.1 2014 and the 12.2 gets announced. So, now I am waiting for a couple days for the note pro to be available in the store to purchase.
My questions is about the choice between the Surface Pro 2 and the Note 12.2
I know that a great deal of things relies on individual needs and preferences, but I want to see where everyone sits.
If you have the chance, would you buy a Note 12.2 or a Surface Pro 2. Assuming same cost.
For me, I wouldn't mind going with a surface pro 2, but I would be tempted to stretch my funds and go with a 256gb model just to get the 8gb ram, then would nee a keyboard for it, pushing my budget pretty high. The note 12.2 is still a high cost device, but cheaper than the Surface Pro 2.
My viewpoint is looking like this:
Reasons for Surface Pro 2
Better CPU
Actual computer with full fledged programs
I can install and play my steam games (really mostly concerned with RTS games since I have my high end gaming laptop with me for higher end games.
Reasons for Note Pro 12.2
Higher Res and better display
Easier use of stylus for notes, drawing, and random functions,
Android and better "mobile" OS.
My big uses for either device would be for Stylus use, consuming content like netflix, and general connectivity for everything.
Thoughts?
Surface Pro 2
I too strongly considered the Surface Pro, and the SP2, for my mobile computing needs. And as you said, it really is all about how you're going to use it. My issue is that it's really almost too much computer for a 10" tablet form factor, and usability suffers for this. In other words, I found it too bulky, heavy, and the screen was simply too small to be able to actually use that power to be productive.
When I'd sit down to type either at a desk or on the couch, it was rather difficult to do so for any length of time, while remaining comfortable. I'd just end up using it as a tablet only. In which case, it was just a little too heavy and bulky for extended use. And I wasn't even remotely using the power of the i-core CPU like this. Which seemed like a waste of such an expensive device.
So I thought I'd try games. I quickly found that it was either wasn't powerful enough for the games I wanted to play and/or the screen was too small.
Basically, I just couldn't find a good use case scenario where it made sense to spend that kind of money on the SP1 or SP2. For me, a larger Ultrabook or a more traditional tablet made more sense. Combining the two just didn't work.
Galaxy Note Pro 12.2
I of course haven't used the Note Pro tablet, but from what I've seen it looks like it might actually work for my needs. I know it's expensive "for an android tablet." But for a 12.2" portable computing device, it's almost a bargain. Well, maybe not a "bargain," and there isn't exactly any real competition for it; at least until others jump on board.
First, it's still relatively light weight for it's size. Find me another 12" device running around 1.6 lb, let alone at this price point. Add that to expected tablet-like battery life, portability, nice screen, new launcher, top-end tablet specs, and I think it looks very promising. Well, at least on paper. I'll have to judge that for myself when I get it. If the software and hardware fail, I probably will have to revisit the ultrabook idea. I just didn't want to spend that kind of money right now.
And the most important part is what I'm going to use it for. No, I'm not going to write a book on it. Not expecting to play BF4 or SC2. Don't need it to fit in a pocket. I've got a 5.7" phone, high-end multi-monitor workstation, and 15" notebook for those tasks. I just want something relatively portable to use when traveling, in a vehicle, in a plane, use at work, or even on the couch. If I'm leaving the house with it, just like a 10" tablet, it's going in a bag on it's own, or with my notebook and it's larger bag.
Then it needs to play videos, music, surf the web, and even handle the occasional high-end android game. I'll probably give some light on-the-go productivity a try on it. But like I said, a notebook with a real keyboard is always going to make far more sense.

First of all it depends on what do you do and what you need your tablet for . As i know its a personal reference to choose which fit your needs so am just going to share mine so it may help you figure out which suits you or which is a better deal.
I am a Junior architect and for powerful tasks i prefer using a desktop or a powerful laptop as thats where you can do real job on a real wide space but when it comes to a tablet category you choose something that can just give you the ability to edit those projects you did on your desktop or laptop and since tablets to us is a real multi-consumption device for work or multimedia and games etc and it would fit a lot of job holders like me as an architect or a student , artist, teacher etc so i would love to go with the Note PRO over the SP2 simply bc : bigger and better display , wide stylus integration for many apps , you can edit and restyle the android as you wish with so many apps and a full nice keyboard. also the way you feel about the device itself matters a lot and i believe going with the samsung would be a more better experience as being able to turn your tablet into a style that makes you feel good about using it . i didn't really like to go with some tech specs as it easily would be found online etc but here there is a really good article that may help you out from the very technical perspective on gizmag.com
Considering for me it was a choice between the note 12.2 and the SP2, and the note doesnt come out until tomorrow, my wife has already gone to best buy to get me a Surface Pro 2, at least to try out.
Considering that I can use bluestacks to play all the android games and apps I could on the note 12.2 (with some limitations), there is no applicational advantage to the note 12.2
The advantage to the 12.2 is the lower cost, better screen, and better integration of the s pen.
I feel like a traitor, though, going with the Surface. I love android and the note series is the king in my book, and the 12.2 is like the damn emperor of the note series, but I would be stupid and rather irrational not to at least try out the surface pro 2 if it can do everything to note can and more with only an extra 100 dollar price tag.
We shall see.
It is true that it depends on what you plan to use the particular device.
From various reviews, SP2 has a battery life of 6 hours while the GNP 12.2 has a battery life of 10 hours. I think I can do more with the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and more.

I was deciding between these two as need a device for editing joomla sites on the fly. As I wouldn't sell my desktop the note seemed the better choice overall. Even though my mega does me I will attempt to use the note more more like a laptop type device as opposed to just a tablet. Plus if it gets rooted I'll start making roms for this beauty

To be honest i couldn't decided between the two, at the moment i have got the surface pro 2 as my personal computer and i also got the galaxy note 10.1 2014 LTE edition, but i am now waiting for the note pro 12.2 LTE because i liked the bigger screen, i know it will cost nearly a thousand but to me its what i want as i want a mobile LTE tablet for when i travel around the country :good:
I just returned my SP2 last night and got the pro 12.2 at best buy. No regrets! I'm scratching my head for the last 15 days. A lot of problems on surface pro 2

I currently have both the SP2 and 12.2. You need a keyboard and mouse to really do anything productive on either device.
For any consumption, Youtube, movies, web, its the 12.2 FTW!
The only thing I haven't found that I can do on the 12.2 is Publisher and Powerpoint creation/presentation. I know there are android options there, but they are not up to full functionality when compared to MS office. The Hancom office that comes with the 12.2 is really good when it comes to excel and word though. Very impressed.
I ordered a bluetooth keyboard for the 12.2. I will be able to slip both the tablet and keyboard in the same bag and they won't be any thicker than the SP2.
The one advantage the SP2 has over the 12.2 is multi-monitor support. I am running three monitors and the SP2 at my office. Talk about productivity. There is no lag. Android can't do that yet. I am an android fanboy, but MS still has this productivity nailed.
My 2 cents. As you said, use case dictates your answer. I can't say I would be completely happy with only one of these devices. There is not yet "one device to rule them all."

I was wondering if any of you knew of a larger compatible stylus for the Note 4 I could purchase. I don't want to use one that has a fat capacitive end like all those cheap styluses I see on the internet, I'm talking about a larger stylus with the same functionality of the S-Pen.

The first notes used to have the pen accessory that came with a styles and it slipped into a "pen" sized holder. Wish samsung brought that back for our devices.

There are several options:
Most (if not all, because The Note series is using Wacom technology) Wacom styli works
HM-5100 Bluetooth-enabled S Pen
Or the fancy Montblanc Styli
All of those are larger styli that works with our Note 4.

You need penabled styli. So the Wacom Intuos will not work, but FE a wacom pen for Microsoft surface will work, and for nealry every tablet PC will work!!
I have a samsung galaxy tab A 10.1 with S-Pen, and I find it pretty alright. However, as an artist, the size and processor are quite the deal-breakers, size because 10.1 is too small (a complain I'm hell of a lot sure is uncommon to hear, haha), and processor because artist apps are processor-heavy, the less processing power and ram you have, the less you can do, and the laggier the brushes will be. In that regard, the A 10.1 passes pretty alright, but it's still very noticeable that it's quite a weak beast (heck, the A 10.1 can't run minecraft unless you reduce the settings a lot, why?)
Anyways, the point is, someone in my city is selling a factory refurbished Note Pro 12.2, and I was wondering if I should buy it or just stay with the Tab A 10.1, is the Note Pro 12.2 processor powerful enough to run multiple layers in, let's say, Cloverpaint without the brush lagging like crazy? How about the paralax, is it abnormally horrid like the surface pro 2? or is it pretty good like the tab A with SPen line? How long will the battery last while drawing? (The tab A lasts for about 3 to 4 hours for intensive painting sessions). Can I add a custom rom without screwing up the pen capabilities, and if it can be done, can I still work with multiwindows (multitasking)? Will my Bamboo Smart pen will work with the Note 12.2?
I'm worried because, although it will be just 200 bucks, it's still 200 bucks that will go down the toilet if this tablet doesn't meet my artistic expectations. I got my eyes on this because of the 32gb of storage and the octacore processor, as well as those delicious 12 inches of screen and stereo speakers (I listen to music while I draw), and also to send this side buttons to hell (seriously samsung why put the buttons on the side, they get on the way all the time!)
If someone here is also an artist and still uses this tablet, I'd absolutely love to hear your feedback about this device. I can safely say, from my side, that the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 is a gorgeous looking tablet with a beautiful screen, amazing battery life and some of the best pen technology I've used; but the issues that it has leave it only as a quick-doodling device, or as a artists entry-level tool, any professional should try to seek for something better (like the S3), because the Tab A 10.1 has a weak processor, a very small screen and only 16 gigs of storage that will really stop you from working comfortably. Not a bad device for the price, but as I said, not the very best for demanding sessions of complex artworks.

I just realized that I posted this on the wrong section, sorry about that!
First of all the 10.1 Tab A sucks, it has **** resolution and aspect ratio. If I were you I'd buy the note 12.2. I don't use Clover Paint because the ****ing UI sucks. I personally use ArtFlow and ArtRage and ArtRage only lags on some tools due to the simulations it does (I draw with 3-5 layers at 2400x2400, 1600x2048, 2560x1280). The Bamboo pen would work but the parallax may be worse depending on the model you bought since you would need the Galaxy Note version to make it work well. With regards to battery, I think mine lasts pretty long. I generally draw for at least 30 minutes a day and like 2-3 hours on weekends and I charge only once a week (I only draw and upload the images). Custom roms would only work on certain models based on what I've read. The multiwindow would use Google's native implementation usually. It's okay but I never use it. Parallax is okay just stay away from the edges of the screen and it's fine. With regards to professional use, I doubt you could honestly use only this to finish something for professional work.

Not an artist, so can't speak to the purely artistic end of things. I can, however, talk some about the comparison between my Note 12.1 and my wife's Note 10.1 (a step up, I believe, from the Tab you have). I am sorry I bought her the Note 10.1. My 12.2 Note Pro is my favorite piece of hardware (esp. w/ a logitech keyboard folder for it). Her Note 10.1 takes forever to charge and is a big pain to use while plugged in (because the plug is at the base of the tablet instead of on the side). It overall underwhelms while my Note 12.2 still seems elegant.
Again, not speaking to the art side. I have installed various art programs on my tablet, and played about. I think someone who knew what they were doing would find it quite productive.

I agree with the upper posts, now that I own a Note Pro 12.2 I came back to drawing without the need of large space or setup nor too much customizing brushes/UI as it is supposed to do in Photoshop on my desktop (even though I suggest you to get a good home setup with at least a Wacom Intuos Pro maybe M size to finish professional work, if you don't actually have one). I have tried a 10.1 and it's really a bit too small compared. I started tweaking with custom ROM with Note Pro 12.2 some months ago, they works great, actually I am on the wonderful Valera1978's Lineage OS 14.1 Nougat 7.2.1 for P905 Note Pro and except you'll miss the touchwiz s-pen official functions (things triggered when you slide out the pen, snote etc.) the drawing experience is great on Sketchbook, ArtRage, Painter and so on... In my limited experience custom roms can be much more snappier and efficient and can give you a debloated near stock experience which is strong thumbs up!
Mind a very important thing! You have to know which model you are purchasing, so let the seller inform you about that. Here in EU where I bought it's easy to find P905 which should be the one with a different chipset, improved for all I know. There are some p905 variant as p905v from Verizon or p907a that could be to avoid if you plan to use Custom ROM: some of them can't be rooted or there is no relevant ROM development. Be sure to dig in the forum with the search to get know which model could suit you best, many topics around.
Speaking of the pen, I can understand that the little s-pen stylus can tire your hand a lot if you work more than half an hour. There are topics where it has been sorted out which type of Wacom Bamboo Feel was properly designed to work with Note Pro 12.2 with minimal offset, the last and improved version is Wacom Bamboo Smart CS-310, though very rare to find. I own it and I can state drawing with that is great! You can find many topics covering the pen to choose and there is at least one major topic where you can learn how to hack your s-pen into a normal sized pen body to have a more comfortable experience.

I am also not an artist, but I do want to say that I purchased a Note pro 12.2 on Ebay for $350 2 months ago, and I absolutely LOVE it! I bought a Logitech keyboard and Samsung S-Mouse for it as well, and I have been using it every single day.
The one drawback is that Samsung stopped issuing updates for the Note Pro after Lollipop 5.1.1. But I haven't found this to be a major issue. It has performed very well in my experience.
I would absolutely recommend making the Note Pro 12.2 your next tablet purchase. You can't buy one in stores, but you can get one on Ebay or Amazon For $300-$350. It is still one of the best tablets out there, in my opinion.

I came back to do some reading in this forum and tried quite hard to get back the thread which taught me about main differences among the most common version of Note Pro 12.2. It has been quite annoying to find it back and I immediately tought of OP because it could be really useful to him, though I didn't quite catch for certain if the custom rom development scene is more healthy for sm-p900 or sm-p905, but I think the first could be. Anyway, I own a p905 and I can reassure you the custom rom scene is enough rich to give some valid alternatives to Stock ROM. In this video review, the guy says (at 3:18) this tablet DOES NOT support an "active pen". I hope he is mistaken and just means it doesn't support specifically the "S pen". Should a universal active pen work with the Tab A8 T290? I think of buying the pen below, the manufacturer says it should work on any touch screen. The problem is that, if it doesn't work, I won't be able to return, I am in Italy and will send it to my niece in Brazil... so I have to make sure. Thanks if you can help!

"Active" pens, which are battery powered, work with devices that have a digitizer layer on the display. The non-S pen model Tab A won't support those pens.
Instead, you can use the universal non-battery or battery-powered capacitive stylus or pens, like these ones:

Coincidently, I already have exactly the first cheaper Meko. I had bought it in order to save money and use it on my Windows Surface 3, it didn't work... I can in fact write a whole sentence with a lot of pain, but not really usable. The bigger soft tip is always responsive, but not nice for note taking. In the end, I had to spend more money and buy the Surface pen (which is very good). I've also tried the cheap Meko on an iPad, it works better, but not really good enough for note taking. I haven't tried it on an Android device, though.
Please let me know if the Meko with the battery works better.

Unfortunately, and against my expectation, the battery-powered Meko pen performed worse! [emoji34] Instead of smooth lines, it was just dots everywhere.
On my iPad, though, it worked flawlessly.
I ended up returning both of the Meko pens.

So you mean the battery-powered Meko worked well on your iPad but not on your other device? Which one is it? Would it be Samsung Tab A8?
I guess it's a matter of luck, these styluses respond differently depending on the device.
I've been testing again the cheaper Meko Stylus (with no battery). These are the devices I've tried:
Surface 3 - very bad, not usable. 1 star.

I'm thinking of trying my luck on that "AICase Active Stylus Pen" (the one I put the link before, you can find in Amazon Italy)... it's an active stylus for 25 euros with a glove to rest the palm on the screen.

I guess it's a matter of luck, these styluses respond differently depending on the device.
I've been testing again the cheaper Meko Stylus (with no battery). These are the devices I've tried:
Surface 3 - very bad, not usable. 1 star.

On my iPad, both of the Meko pens worked well - 4/5 for the disc-based one, and 5/5 for the battery one.
On my Tab A, the disc one worked better than the battery one - 3 vs 1.
I found this pen on Amazon for the Tab A that has good reviews:

I was about to state that ALL "active stylii" require a second digitizer to work but apparently that isn't totally true. I bought a BoxWave stylus to use with my HP Envy X360 laptop, and just to verify that it wouldn't work without the second digitizer, like the ones for the S-Pen, I tried it with my T510. I have never used a stylus for drawing, so I don't know if it works as well as an S-Pen for that, but it DOES work and it DOES produce a "ballpoint pen" type line. Their "MSRP" is fairly high, but if you shop around, you can get one fairly cheap. I got mine in eBay for about $20. New with free shipping.
My "AICase Active Stylus" (from Amazon Italy) just arrived. It works very well, except that the glove that comes with it is useless, you can still use your finger to write with the glove on. I'm struggling to find some material that I can use to rest my palm... It's very uncomfortable to write without being able to rest your palm on the screen.
I would say it's a bit better than the passive Meko Stylus, especially for the iPad 4, which has an older screen. It has a metal tip, so you should have a screen protector to prevent scratches.
I've tried on these devices:
Surface 3 - doesn't work, it makes a few lines, but not good at all.
iPad 4 - works well enough
iPad 6 - very good, works a bit better than on the iPad 4
Huawei P20 pro - works similarly to iPad 6
I still haven't tried on a Samsung tablet.
