Handwriting - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't seem to get the Note to move into any kind of handwriting mode (other than S Note and similar apps). I'd hoped to be able to use handwriting in Office, gmail, text messaging, etc. Any suggestion?

split screen with s note then copy and paste or share via....

I don't have a note 10.1 (yet!), but want to know if you write a complete page of notes using handwriting can it be turned into a text document using software on the device?

when you click on a text field and the keyboard pops up, there is a button with a T on it to the left of the space bar. Hit that and the handwriting recognition input comes up.

I haven't got mine yet - arrives tomorrow, so this answer is based on what happens with the Note 5.3 that I do have. There is a setting for the Samsung keyboard which switches to handwriting input when the pen is detected. Have a look to see if that is a setting on 10.1 too. It is under Settings->Language and input-> Samsung keyboard->Pen detection

Just a minor addition to this. The T might not be there - it might be a cog, or a microphone. There are three dots on that button. Press and hold the button, and you get a popup offering you text input, handwriting input, speech input, or configuration. So there are four options, and depending what the button is currently set to, pressing and holding gives you access to the other three options.

How to get rid of "word completion" in SMS ?

I thought I turned all T9 and word completion off everywhere I found, but still when writing SMS I see this bar at bottom of the screen echoing my typing. It also has + sign on right.
So this is T9 right? How the hell do I get rid of it?
Hi Taajuus,
I have a 'T9' printed on the SPACE key of the slide out keyboard, you can reach through the 'FN' key.
So in SMS typing mode with the slide out Keyboard, press FN - Space, a pop up menu appears where you can configure T9 settings.
Hope that helps
T.
There should be a slider on the actual on-screen keyboard itself to deselect T9. Give that a shot.
Yes! That did the trick, thank you!
Still there was no option to simple tick off T9, but i chose ABC and my problem was solved

ShapeWriter Menu switch?

I recently started using shapewriter on my Nexus one. Not really sure why it gets a bad wrap since after I got used to it, I can type about twice as fast with fewer errors as using a regular soft keyboard or keyboard replacement which was welcome since I lost my HW G1 keyboard switching to Nexus. And hell it's free and legal. But I had a couple of quick questions in case anybody else on here uses it.
1. Sometimes I want to use the regular android keyboard for apps like terminal, is there a menu key to let me switch to the android keyboard. On the regular keyboard it's just hold down 123 button and switch inputs. I can't seem to find an equivalent in shapewriter unless I go back to the android settings page and shutoff shapewriter manually in there.
2. anyway to set a gesture to launch the voice input stuff since there isn't a voice input shortcut on the keyboard.
Thanks!
~Bryan
I'm looking for a keyboard that has the secondary characters over the primary ones as well as the voice input key.
I didn't like shapewriter and better keyboard seems to be missing the voice input keys.
Like the stock keyboard, but hate having to push a seperate key to get numbers and then again for the letters.
To change the keyboard just hold down on the text field until the menu pops up and select input method

That is a very useful tip and almost exactly what I need. The one app that tip doesn't seem to work for is terminal, which is the app I mainly need to switch back to the stock keyboard as it is the only one supported. or perhaps I should find a better terminal program.
Though its not as good as the HTC IME keyboard with a Voice to Text, a Long press on '.' will bring up a menu to select punctuation. I just found this out yesterday.

[App][Shortcut] Voice Input ?

I use Swype, which doesn't have the voice input key. (I just checked out the Droid X yesterday, which does have the microphone key on their Swype keyboard, sigh...)
Anyway, is there any app or shortcut to activate voice input on any text field WITHOUT long pressing and switching keyboards?
An app that inserts "Speech Input" into any long press menu would be fine, but I'm not sure if that's possible since I believe each app controls their own long presses...? Again, looking for something that doesn't require switching keyboards.
Swype will release a new version with the voice button already announce working on it
Good idea. A 'dictate' long-press option for text boxes.
Shouldn't be much code but figuring out where to add it is the hard part.

Is a text field long press individual to each app, or is it system-wide?
Interested in this as well. Its the only reason I haven't completely switched from the HTC IME keyboard
Appears to be system wide

Ooh, awesome. Could be a nice addition to CM?

[Q] handwriting recognition

Hi all,
I have just got myself a N8010 and I cannot find a shortcut on virtual keyboard in order to start handwriting recognition. The only app where I can actually use s pen for handwriting recognition is S Notes. I'm sure there is a way to use handwriting instead of keyboard. I just dont know how to do it. Any help?
If you are using the Samsung keyboard and it does not go blank when you have the S-Pen close to it then you need to check the settings the S-Pen under Language and Input. It should say something like "Auto detect S-Pen". Try the Samsung keyboard setting directly from the keyboard. Good luck

If you open a text field wit the s-pen the text recognition pad should open automatically. If you then pull down the notification blind and choose: Choose input method/Setup input methods/Settins (gear wheel)/Handwriting/Recognition speed and choose 300ms it works faster. 200ms would be ideal imo but you can't choose that.
sorted it out.
thanx!

Press and hold the settings button just to the left of the spacebar and you will get a popup with 3 options, let go of the first button and select the 'T' for handwriting input, the settings button from this point on will be changed into a handwriting button (make sure you have handwriting input turned on in the Samsung keyboard settings).

[Q] problem with switching between keyboard panel and s-pen handwriting panel

hi,
just bought note 8.0 gt-n5100 few days ago.
I can't figure out how the s-pen works in certain cases.
at first I couldn't activate the handwriting panel when I detached the s-pen. whether it was a web browser, S-note or whatever where text can be entered, I had only keyboard panel popping up. Which is not bad, I could use fingers or the s-pen to type the keyboard.
but I wanted the handwriting recognition tool and use it for entering web address as well as for notes.
So I found the option in settings/language and input/samsung keyboard saying that when text box is tapped with the s-pen the handwriting recognition mode is switched on.
and it works, well partly..., i.e. when I open web browser or s-note and try to enter text the keyboard panel pops up. then, when I take out the s-pen, the keyboard is replaced with the handwriting panel.
The problem is that I can't go back to the keyboard (I mean the alphabet keyboard because the symbols keyboard can be accessed from the handwriting panel). I hide the s-pen, close all apps, open them again and try to enter text - immediately handwriting panel pops up, never keyboard panel.
to activate the keyboard panel again I have to turn off the tablet and switch it on again. but once I change from the keyboard panel to the handwriting panel again, it is the same problem, I can't go back to the keyboard otherwise than by kind of reseting the tablet.
Anyone got the same issue and knows how to solve it?
every help appreciated.
thanks
