[A510] Root and Bootloader unlock - Acer Iconia A700 and A510

Hi,
just to put info at the right place.
A510 root is yet available, thanks to Acer dev..
A100 exploit is still working, at least on current firmwares.
Thanks to Jesse6749, ZeroNull and vdsirotkin (4pda.ru) :
see xda topic here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25036001&postcount=93
consider installing acer a510 drivers from their website(even if your a510 is currently recognized by your pc)
in addition, some user had bugs at the end of the script, but root is done (su + titanium backup working)
another tool should be mentioned :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661324
To unlock bootloader (Euclid's Brother ) :
You must have the ability to send adb commands to the tablet.
adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
As a reminder :
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/SOS of=/mnt/sdcard/recovery.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/LNX of=/mnt/sdcard/boot.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/APP of=/mnt/sdcard/system.img
out of this :
(thanks nikagl)
Code:
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/SOS /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /recovery
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/LNX /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /boot
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/APP /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /system
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/CAC /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 /cache
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/MSC /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /misc
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/FLX /dev/block/mmcblk0p6 /system/vendor /flexrom /flex
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/AKB /dev/block/mmcblk0p7 ?
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/USP /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 /aboot (bootloader.blob)
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/DE2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 ?
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/UDA /dev/block/mmcblk0p10 /data
So you can use these commands:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/SOS of=/mnt/sdcard/recovery.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/LNX of=/mnt/sdcard/boot.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/APP of=/mnt/sdcard/system.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/CAC of=/mnt/sdcard/cache.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/MSC of=/mnt/sdcard/misc.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/FLX of=/mnt/sdcard/flexrom.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/AKB of=/mnt/sdcard/AKB.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/USP of=/mnt/sdcard/bootloader.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/DE2 of=/mnt/sdcard/DE2.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/UDA of=/mnt/sdcard/data.img

I hope a mod can move at least the AIO toolbox thread to this forum.

Instead of hoping, why don't you contact the A500 forum mod directly?

Good idea. Done.

Update: Thread has been moved.

Has anyone been able to update their SU binaries?
I updated the superuser app and when I checked my binaries (and tried to update them), I get:
"remounting /system as rw... fail"
I'm thinking I need to update my busybox, but the steps in the OP links says I should not. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Using the recovery and root scripts I created I was able to update su, etc. I think the mempodroid exploit has some problem with newer version of busybox, also judging from the other thread (Full root for A10x / A5xx) - see my posts over there. The AIO tool also uses that mempodroid exploit... maybe it's better to start using the recovery & root script?

Nika.

Sorry, got to recall this post. The new version of busybox does have some problems with mounting through busybox. Doing it directly works, but through busybox it fails. See my post here: 202
Regards,
Nika.

Thanks for the update. So for now... I just leave it as is, right?
Or should I try to update busybox? And yes, I'm using the mempodroid exploit.

How to UNROOT & LOCK
Is it poosible to lock and unroot an previously rooted A511? I am not 100% satisfied with the display and would like sending back my a511 and wait for a701.

Easiest methods:
Lock = install new ROM (FOTA, if available, or the 1.011 rom and then do FOTA)
Unroot = install new ROM (although that may not cleanup every trace) or factory reset (which is the best method -- but will wipe ALL your data)
Recovery = not possible yet - I don't recall seeing a stock-A511-recovery yet... you can try putting the A510 recovery on (I did that, it seemed to not work but at least wipes away most of the traces of your hack-attempt)
Regards,
Nika.

FOTA says my ROM is up-to-date. So I have to flash. I downloaded from the Stock-ROM forum Acer_AV041_A511_1.011.00_WW_GEN1.zip. But how can I flash it? Sorry to bother you but I don't want to brick my a511.

I have downgraded twice with that ROM. Just rename it to update.zip, make sure the bootloader is unlocked and copy the zip to your external sdcard and reboot into recovery. It will start the downgrade automatically, reboots, will republish your apps (or something like that) and then you can do the FOTA to move up to 1.034 (I think - can't check as my tab is dead...).

Nika.

That means you don't have a ww_gen1 A511 device. Yours is probably German (for instance A511_EMEA_DE). You can check that in your device.prop file.
The following is on another forum (translated from Russian):
acer-club said:
On the firmware from another region will be ask only through Customise recovery (someone here wrote that your machines already have this), after removing the check of the firmware from the archive in the installation script (/ META-INF/com/google/android / updater-script) - something like this in the beginning of the installation script:
assert (getprop ("ro.product.name") == "a510_emea_cus1");
this part of the "a510_emea_cus1" on different firmware will be different. Remove all the line.
By necessity, that would not lose the unlock, you need to remove the fill from the new firmware bootloader'a (bootloader.blob file in the root of the archive firmware) and disable the recovery of stock recovery (file / system / etc / install-recovery.sh in the archive or rename the firmware removed), otherwise the whole tablet, and overwrite the unlock will be stitched completely stock firmware.
Next, fill up this way obtained the firmware on the SD card and flashed it through Customise recovery (recovery through the stock it does not work!).

It contains some info on what to do, but I think that's way to risky. It did also contain a good hint how to revert recovery! Try to rename the "install-recovery.sh" file back. It's either renamed by the script you executed for root or part of the instructions on how to install the cwm recovery. After this, try to boot a few times and I assume both the recovery and possibly even the unlocked bootloader will be reverted to stock! In that case you can also simply do a factory reset and it will remove the root as well

Rooting via the mempodroid exploid on Acer_AV041_A510_RV28RC02_WW_GEN1 worked as far as I can see (SuperUser and Titanium Backup install and run alright).
Only problem I see is that apps like Titanium Backup and ES File explorer are not able to mount /system as rw and thus are a little limited in there actions. They do not complain on gaining su, that works.
(Re)mount commands via adb shell:
mount -o remount,rw /system
mount -o remount,ro /system
do work as expected.
Any idea's on what is wrong / missing and how to correct it?
Edit:
It seems that a rw mount on / is going OK ???

i used aio tool and rooted and unlocked bootloader...2 questions:
1- how to install a rom now?
2- if i want, can i lock again bootloader and remove root in order to avoid acer assistence troubles?
if i can0t remove it, can i just leave it there? can i install any fota if acer releases it? or acer invalidates guarantee if i need it?

Not working

Here's my backup
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5ALHYN80
You must be rooted (I assume z4root or universal android root works)
then either using terminal (grab terminal app from market) or using adb.
Grab the recovery.img and drop it into sdcard via usb or adb push.
Open terminal and type su and then flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
or if using adb, its adb shell and then su and then flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Note: I am not the best at writing noobie guides but hopefully it helps
Thanks for this. I do not have mine yet( lol, just ordered it) but I donated for your work!
Thanks!
Anyone have a idea on how to get back into recovery? I have it installed but have tried holding every button to get me back and nothing kinda sucks since I have been testing new mods for this and cant get to my backup because the first shot at the mod was a fail.
I was able to get clockwork installed thanks to you. Do you know of any images that are out for the 7015?

Aside from stock(rooted) dump, there is nothing, I'll work with havic to get a rooted dump with google apps(market mostly) working correctly.
Besides that there is nothing else from my end for now. I personally don't like telechip tablets, bad experience from a gentouch :X
Also telechip company are retards and don't release kernel source, it'd help developers optimize a 2.1 rom and also be able to port kernel to a newer one for 2.2
I can see that this model gained popularity this black Friday. We are just now starting to see android tablets hit " Joe User ". I think that the telechip tabs will become popular so long as the price is on point. Thanks for all you do.
what exactly is this recovery for?
does installing this offer me additional features, or is it merely what we would restore to in case of disaster?

For now it is a good way to backup your unit so that if you screw it up you can go back. In the future people will make images for it. Hopefully someday android 2.2
Which version of flash_image tool is needed to flash this recovery or is the tool stock on the tablet?
EDIT: figured it out. stock. Looking through the dump now =)

If you try and recover from the backup that is in the link you may or may not get a error. The error is md5 mismatch. So the recovery fails to install.
What needs to be done is need to have busybox installed then shell in and run the following commands.
This has to be ran from the dir. that contains the backup files.
Which will more than likely be similar to this
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010-12-01.20.41.18
#busybox md5sum -c nandroid.md5
boot.img: OK
cache.img: OK
data.img: OK
recovery.img: OK
system.img: OK
# reboot recovery
reboot recovery
Once in clockwork then run a recovery.
If you have a Issue let me know I will try my best to get you some answers.

Worked for me
I got it working by doing the following.
1. Download and installed "Android Terminal Emulator" on to the device.
2. Download and installed Z4Root 1.3.0.apk from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
3. Run it and pressed the "Permanent Root" button. It took a bit and it auto rebooted.
4. Place the recovery.img on the root of my sd card. (Razor950's recovery.img is from post#1 on this thread.)
5. Opened "Android Terminal Emulator".
6. Entered the following.
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
7. Locked everything up for about 5 min and it went back to # prompt when it was done.
8. I powered off the device.
9. After it turned off I pressed and held the back button then pressed the power button. Kept holding it until you see clockworkMod v2.5.1.3. (If it says Android it's too late.)
I have a question myself what is sd-ext on clockwork? Also is there a way to do a selective backup? Just system with no data?
Thanks.
Thanks for your procedure, will try it when I receive my tablet.
Regarding your question about sd-ext, it's a partition of your sdcard. One will be in fat32 and the other in ext2 or ext3. Usually ext2 is used when you have app2sd or 12sd+. The purpose of this is to have more apps in install by installing them on your ext partition instead of internal memory. I use it for my HTC desire (smartphone)
Regarding your second question, I don't know anyway of doing a backup without data but pretty sure it's possible, for example, if you go in your Android do a factory reset. reboot in recovery then do your backup. Not sure if there's another way to do it
Yezir!

Can you see the recovery.img on your sd card from a file manger app like Astro? If so when your in the terminal can you cd to /sdcard? If so can you enter ls -l recovery.img? Check the size to make sure it is all there.
I have anther question myself.
At cobyusa.com/?p=prod&prod_num_id=10498&pcat_id=1013 there is a firmware update. in the update.zip in system in the build.prop file i see a line that says "ro.build.version.incremental=eng.enzo.20101125.200217". I notice that the build number on the device says "MID7015 1.6a_20101105-2". Looks like they may have changed somethings but not sure what. What would be bet best way to figure out what they changed?
I tried to run it from clockwork and i get
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "tcc8900" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "tcc8900"
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
To install this update would I just have to unroot my device? Not sure how to look what the current ro.build.product is now.
Thanks.

Full root for A700 and A701 tablets

WARNING. THIS is ONLY for tablets running ICS. If you are running Jelly Bean, You May Brick your device!!
Again, this is for ICS ONLY!
Running this root on a Jelly Bean OS can cause your tablet to stop functioning as it is designed for ICS only. If you have a Jelly Bean Operating system, then please use Vorbeth's or Moscow Desire's Easy Root Package located in the Development Forum. If you do not know which OS you currently have, then you should ask questions before rooting.
Method 1. Universal for A700 and A701 Tablet
1. Enable adb mode: Settings -> Developer options -> USB debugging - check it point.
2. Unlock your bootloader for fastboot, follow here. Then reboot a tablet.
3. Download arhive. Unpack it to any place.
4. Open the directory with the unpacked archive. Execute file:
for windows with the rights of administrator:
Code:
runit.bat
Your firmware is now rooted.
5. At first it is necessary to start the Superuser program, at least 1 time after receiving root. And only then programs that require root access.
ATTENTION!
Don't install Busybox! It is already installed and established! If you reinstall it, some programs will become unable to access root permissions!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Method 2. With the patched kernel from the A700 tablet
For ICS A700 firmware only!
1. Enable adb mode: Settings -> Developer options -> USB debugging - check it point.
2. Unlock your bootloader for fastboot, follow here. Then reboot a tablet.
3. Download this arhive. Unpack it to any place.
4. Open the directory with the unpacked archive. Execute file:
for windows with the rights of administrator:
Code:
flash-ICS-patchedBoot.bat
Your boot.img is now patched and firmware is now rooted.
5. At first it is necessary to start the Superuser program, at least 1 time after receiving root. And only then programs that require root access.
6. Now you will have to install the following programs:
BusyBox
Titanium Backup
7. Run BusyBox and go through the install steps. During this SU should ask permission to give BB root access, if it does, it worked!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Method 3. From CWM recovery for A700 and A701 Tablet - Not available due to problems in the work of CWM recovery!
1. At the tablet must be installed CWM recovery.
2. Download arhive ICS_Rooting_recovery.zip. Put it on SD-card. Insert the SD-card in the tablet.
3. Run CWM recovery on the tablet and flash ICS_Rooting_recovery.zip.
Your firmware is now rooted.
4. Now you will have to install the following programs:
SuperUser
Titanium Backup
At first it is necessary to start the Superuser program, at least 1 time after receiving root. And only then programs that require root access.
ATTENTION!
Don't install Busybox! It is already installed and established! If you reinstall it, some programs will become unable to access root permissions!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Method 1, in contrast to method 2, does not affect the core of the system. This makes it possible to receive future firmware update. But only if you do not forget to make backups before making changes to the system and restore it before upgrading.
PS: I tried to make a method 1 as safe as possible. But I have not had a chance to test it completely. So if it does not work, be sure to let me know in this thread and I modified it.
great work ! Thank you for this :good:
BTW the the script is called "flashpboot.bat" and not "flash-ICS-patchedBoot.bat" in the archive.
Really great thanks for it.
Just a question, can it be unrooted/undone by flashing 028-stock rom?

Rename Acer_AV043_A700_1.028.00_EMEA_FR to update.zip and put it in an external sd card.
There's a startup mode that installs it automatically, you have to press the left volume+power buttons at startup if I remember well.

The size of the patched bootloader seems wrong, I guess that's why it's faulty.
OK, so how do we fix this ??
Edit, reflashed with update.zip, so all OK, phew !
Cannot reproduce with Acer_AV043_A700_1.028.00_EMEA_FR !
Just stays at Acer logo with unlocked bootloader and forces me to re-install as update.zip which leaves me without root.
Which Firmware is working ?
Has anybody allready tested with which firmware this method is working and with which not ??
Be careful, same issue on NORMAL french firmware, not the crappy totally unknown one everybody seems to like, so i guess that's it : this patch STUCK YOUR TABLET ON ANY KNOWN FIRMWARE THIS FAR
Okay, so i just tried to push insert the superuser.apk into the Acer_AV043_A700_1.028.00_EMEA_FR file and flashing this, but as i was expecting, it didn't work out... it didn't even install.
edit: i can confirm, that it does neither work with the Acer_AV043_A700_1.028.00_EMEA_FR, nor the Acer_AV043_A700_1.025.00_EMEA_CUS1 !
so, i guess we have to wait for ZeroNull to come up with another way to get this to work.
Flashboot.bat not responding
I unlock my bootloader with Blackthund3r's A510 Bootloader Unlocker v1.0.0 and go the "unlocked" status. Rebooted the tablet, went into the patched-boot folder and ran as administrator "flashboot.bat". The screen displayed a bunch of what looks like gibberish and when I pressed the Enter key, the screen went to :
"Flashing patched boot.img
<waiting for device>
Then the process just sits there and doesn't go any further. Am I missing something in what I am doing?

Anybody got any ideas on what to do next?
Thanks!
You have to reboot into bootloader for the script to work.
But if you had read the comments above, you might have seen, that the described method does not yet work and several people state, that after flashing the Boot.img the device is stuck in boot.
Gesendet von meinem A700 mit Tapatalk 2
Just to be clear : This method specific to A700 does not work at all yet BUT this WORKS PERFECTLY with the A701 patched rom ZeroNull released at the same time
check this post for the a701 patched rom, you don't need to put it on sdcard it includes BAT files to flash it all from bootlader

[Resolved] HANNSpree HSG1279 root and recovery!!! [Updated 01/28/14]

Updated OP with solution, many thanks to @fipsy for the final solution, here is his post for those that need help rooting this device: (UPDATE: Root for 4.2.2 at the end of the post)
fipsy said:
Last week I investigated a lot of days to solve the problem: (I'm sorry for not being able to post working links in this forum because I didn't write enough here. So you have to reconstruct my links yourself into your browser)
As omegadrive supposed you just have to exchange the su binary, give the right permissions and the Superuser App from the Playstore will immediately work.
The necessary USB drivers for the device are found here: http://yadi.sk/d/54lX5c2O386XU
They only work with Windows 7!
After starting the "adb shell" you can gain root permissions on the device by typing "su". The su distributed with the device in /system/xbin is not compatible with common superuser apks. So it has to be exchanged with the version 3.1.1 binary: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-bin-3.1.1-arm-signed.zip
Copy it to your /sdcard. Then continue with adb shell:
Code:
$ su
# cd /system/xbin
Mount the system partition read/write:
Code:
# mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/st19 /system
Rename the original binary for later use (if something fails):
Code:
# mv su su-orig
Copy the binary to the xbin folder:
Code:
# busybox cp /sdcard/su ./su
Change the permissions:
Code:
# chmod 6755 su
Mount the system partition read-only and exit:
Code:
# mount -o remount,ro -t rfs /dev/block/st19 /system
# exit
$ exit
Now install the Superuser App from the Playstore - and have fun! Do *NOT* Update the su binary from within the Superuser App or it will be overwritten with a non-working version!

CUSTOM RECOVERY FINALLY POSSIBLE!!! Again, many thanks to @fipsy, here is his post:
fipsy said:
I finally made it! Here is a working CWM Recovery for the HANNspree HANNSpad SN1AT71 (HSG1279).
I didn't fully test it but the backup function works. Also mounting and unmounting partitions works as well as the adb shell which is very important if the device is bricked and doesn't boot anymore.
Before connecting to the device via adb shell it is necessary to mount the /system partition (menu "mounts and storage") because otherwise /system/bin/sh cannot be found by adb shell.
The CWM recovery by default stores it's backups on the external SD-Card. The benefit is that the backup can easily be plugged out and stored apart from the device. But the recovery is also able to restore backups from the internal sdcard. Those backups can be made online on a running android system by using apps like "Online Nandroid Backup" and "Nandroid Manager". The benefit is that it's not necessary to reboot the device before backing up and you can keep on working.
There is one problem when creating backups in CWM Recovery: The date/time of the backup is always set to 1st of January 1970 due to a missing backup battery in this device. Look here: http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=341. So if you want to make backups with accurate timestamps you would have to set the actual time of the device using adb shell: Start adb shell and enter:
Code:
/system/xbin/busybox date -s "YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss"
before making the backup.
To cut a long story short: Download the CWM-Recovery here: http://yadi.sk/d/ArprqzfFFWvy4 and flash it to your (rooted) device. How to do this:
Copy the file cwm-recovery.ima to your internal sdcard.
Either connect via adb shell and enter su
or run a Terminal Emulator and enter su
then enter
Code:
cat /sdcard/cwm-recovery.ima > /dev/block/acta
and you're done! Have fun! Comments are appreciated!
Perhaps someone likes to create an update.zip from it?

ROOT for new OTA 4.2.2 update:
fipsy said:
Good news for germany: The rollout began tonight! I just got the update to Android 4.2.2!
Some people asked for the upgrade file to manually update from the recovery. Here it is: http://yadi.sk/d/igsBGsAjFpLsL
Edit (01/13/2014): Seems this update only works on devices with special G-Sensor hardware (KIONIX 3-axis Accelerometer).
@ig6677: There you will also find the META-INF you wanted.
For your information: After my update to Android 4.2.2 root has gone on my device! I expected this. All Apps that need root don't work anymore. I don't know what you did that root was still there after the update...
Furthermore in /system/xbin there is no su file anymore. Also my CWM Recovery has gone and was replaced by the Stock HANNspree recovery!
But whats new: If you connect to the device via adb shell you immediately have superuser rights! No su is needed for this anymore. So it's possible to restore the CWM Recovery using cat.
If you adb push the 3.1.1 su binary from your pc to the /sdcard on your device and after this execute my commands in the first posting of this thread the apps have su rights with superuser.apk again. But you will not be able to add new programs to the superuser app (if a new app requests superuser rights there is no popup). So this is no solution.
The Superuser App is not able to grant superuser rights on android systems > 4.1.1, but the App SuperSu is! So download the SuperSU ZIP from here: http://download.chainfire.eu/351/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip
Then copy it to your sdcard and install it using the Recovery. Voila! Everything works again!
Another issue: The Huawei E1750 Surfstick is not detected anymore. On 4.1.1 it was no problem to surf using this stick. But I think this is one of the "great features" of the new android versions...

:victory: Here it is: The new version 6.0.3.3 of CWM Recovery for the HANNspree HANNSpad SN1AT71 (HSG1279)
Beside some minor bugfixes the main benefit of this release is that there are no more errors when trying to restore the .android_secure folder. So the "dirty" workaround to restore this folder is not necessary anymore.
The .android_secure folder is also automatically restored together with the data partition when selecting "data" from the "advanced restore" options.

My original question:
Just bought this tablet on Cybermonday for a really good price, but can't find a way to root it for the life of me...
Main problem has been I can't see it using ADB (v1.0.31), always list no devices even with the latest generic Google ADB driver, which shows fine on device manager.
Tablet comes with Android 4.1.1 and no extras, is just a plain version of android with Play market and ES File Explorer pre installed and have access to android stock recovery.
Any ideas?
Also, just in case I start messing with the tablet, Any way I can backup the stock system just in case?
Thanks.

Update 3:
After trying over 20 generic rooting methods I come back defeated, 6 hours of testing and nothing. :crying:
I also have picked up 2 of these devices (1 for me and 1 for my wife). I have tried every method I can find to root this, inclicking mutliple one click solutions, apps that are suposted to root, etc. and none of them seem to work, I think the reason why is because the device is being reconized as allready being rooted, SuperOneClick, Framaroot, and Kingo all stated that it was allready rooted ..but apps will not install as if the device was truly rooted. Also geting "access denied" when trying to access the root folder..
Applications that require root will install because they think it has root, they also will prompt stating to give root access/permissions, but when accepting, they simply lock up because they can't access the root correctly.
anyways, I'm done trying for now.. if anyone has any other ideas, please speak up and let us know. thanks!
also have one of these

I picked up one of these also, I tried a few of the rooting methods you guys listed before finding this post. also no sucess, Would love to get this working bit better, because stock rom is a bit sluggish when it shouldn't be given the specs.
OK, kept trying and found some interesting stuff, first of all a screenshot with the tablet info:

Second, it seems the tablet is already rooted but the root is just dummy or the interface has been disabled with deny set as default for any application.
So the trick to root it must be a way to replace de su binary or change the default permission to allow.
Any experts have any idea how to achieve this?

I thought about buying this Tab. But if there is no working root-methode or costumROM ability thats a dealbreaker for me.
You told that this tab should be identical to the "Ainol Novo 10 Hero". I dont know if that is true, because in one forum some guy told, that the HannSpee is chargeable via the USB-Port, and afaik the Ainol is not. You have the Hannspee, can you tell me if it is chargeable via USB ?
Anyway, on the german Amazon-site there is a guy that claims that costum-ROMs are working on the Ainol
I will ask him how he managed that and perhaps you can try that on you device. But I dont know if he answers, because responds on Amazon-rewievs are not like those in forums (often never answered)
hope some nerd comes up with a nice plan to break into this device......non-rooted devices are s**t!

Well, I deduced it was identical to the Ainol Novo cause at least the hardware specs are identical and the board and CPU are reported by CPU - Z to be the same one. Tablet layout is a little different thou.
Anyway yes, this one charges through the USB port, but really slowly, good enough to have the USB connected while using it and will not drain the battery, but on my last test it barely charged 5% in 3 to 4 hours of while using it.
Crossing my fingers you can get in contact with that guy and we can figure out how to root this ****er lol

Unfortunately it didn't worked, kept failing at validating files when it was installing from default recovery.
Anyway, going to try another method, these are the steps I followed:
1) Get ADB working and recognized.
a) Download these modded drivers and extract them.
b) Do this to install them since the drivers are not signed:
run CMD as admin
bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON
reboot
install driver from device manager
bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING OFF
reboot
c) Go to %userprofile%\.android folder and if it doesn't exist create a text file named "adb_usb.ini" (no quotes and make sure INI is the extension, not TXT), open it and just add "0x10D6" (no quotes), save it
d) open CMD as admin
adb devices
Your device should be recognized at this point, this is what I got:
C:\>adb devices
List of devices attached
0123456789ABCDEF device

umm, instead of using custom drivers, why not simply use the newest android Drivers? confirmed they work and device is reconized correctly, as long as you "install official droid drivers" then change the "adb_usb.ini" to only include 0x10D6 device, same as your last steps, but using official drivers, instead of custom ones. Maybe it has something to do with the failures?

thanks for this info. I'll test it out tonight, and let you know.
one question though.. so are you saying that future updates of SU will not work? if we do this, should we also disable auto-updates? If the software does update, will it break our system.. or simply that we need to reload the SU over again, but the OS will open, just limited to "non-rooted" ? ??

Now have full root privileges woot!!! Tested with Titanium backup and ES File explorer they accepted root and got permission prompts :highfive:
I will update the OP with your instructions, they worked beautifully, MANY THANKS AGAIN!!!
Btw, Do you have any idea on which custom recovery may work and if the bootloader can be unlocked? (if it is locked, I can't see anything when booting into fastboot mode and Windows doesn't recognize the tablet at that moment, only shows unknown device)
I want to make a backup of the stock rom and start testing CM builds on it.

The original Android drivers never worked for me, used latest version 8.0 and the device was not recognized for some reason, only the modded drivers worked to recognize the ADB device. Btw, I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro and had to turn off driver signature to get the ADB drivers installed, maybe the issue was Win8.1 itself, but oh well, at least now we have a solution.

Update: After giving permissions with Superuser I went ahead and installed my SuperSU Pro license, gave it root rights (told it NOT to uninstall the other root app on prompt) and installed as a system app from within the app itself, reboot and voila! still fully rooted and binary updated (it replaced the other Superuser on reboot). So yeah, su binary updates are possible now :victory:

This also was my first attempt but it failed. So I went the same way as Omegadrive did: I identified the device as a clone of the "Ainol Novo 10 Hero" and searched for appropriate drivers. I found the same ones as Omegadrive did. And they seem to be the only ones that are working.

one question though.. so are you saying that future updates of SU will not work? if we do this, should we also disable auto-updates? If the software does update, will it break our system.. or simply that we need to reload the SU over again, but the OS will open, just limited to "non-rooted" ? ??

I don't know if future binaries will work. When I manually updated the su-binary within the Superuser App it definitely didn't work anymore. Maybe because the su was exchanged with an older version (3.0.*). But Omegadrive said that updates are possible. So I don't know at the moment. Be careful anyway! Normally there is no reason for updating fully working binaries. The su binary is never updated automatically. So you don't have to deactivate any auto-updates.
Cheers, Volker

The recovery mode is activated by pressing "Volume down -" and at the same time pressing the on/off key for about 3 seconds. Then releasing it while keep on holding down the "Volume -" until the recovery menu appears.
I think it will be possible to adapt the CWM Recovery. Perhaps we can investigate together on that!? Here the recovery file system table (for nandroid etc.). I just sent it to Ameer Dawood, the developer of "Online Nandroid Backup", so that he may integrate it into his App.
recovery filesystem table

0 /tmp ramdisk (null) (null) 0

Oh nice, thanks for the help, I'm no programmer, just a tinkerer, I'm willing to test anything you throw this way lol
My main priority right now is to make a backup of the current rom and then look for a way to repartition the /data cause 1Gb for apps is way too low, specially when there are 13Gb free on /sdcard, as want to make it 4Gb for /data and rest internal. I'm assuming I have to install custom recovery for that, or can ir be done right now from ADB?
Sent from my HSG1279 using Tapatalk
If you want to store parts of the filesystem (like /data/app, /data/app-private, /data/dalvik-cache and libs) to the sd-card you probably will have to install a custom rom like cyanogenmod which supports additional partitions / filesystems on the sd-card (like ext2).
But you're right. The first thing to do before making any experiments is to make a full backup (nandroid) and be able to restore it from a recovery. So we first should investigate on that...
I just installed the CWM recovery for the Ainol Novo 10 Hero 2 for testing. The device started into the CWM recovery screen but then failed to mount some folders. The menu was working but most features were not functional. This means that the HSG1279 is *not* fully compatible with the Ainol Hero 2.
So we have to find another solution. I suppose it will be quite a lot of work to adapt the CWM recovery to this device...

[Solved]Help with root on 6039Y

Hello,
first of all my idol has locked bootloader.
I just resized /data partition to 16GB, and it is working no problem, but I can not root it ( install supersu.zip).
After installing supersu.zip, on the /system partition are su binaries and SuperSu apk etc. so the zip file is flashed right way but, after rebooting the device I can reach the device only via adb shell, and do whatever, but It is not booting
Is there any special supersu.zip package for our device? or Do I need bootloader unlocked?
Thanks for help )

What is the problem with the supersu from the recovery? Why you don't use it ? No additional .zip .bin or other files are needed to root your phone. I have described already here how the prompt for the supersu installation can be seen if it has been discarded once. The bootloader is not necessary to be unlocked.

I forgot to write it, but I tried the TWRP supersu as well, and it did nothing I tried it now again, removed .twrps, allowed modifications on /system, pressed reboot, system then it asked for installing supersu, so I swiped for install. It intalled and rebooted, after reboot there is not root nor supersu apk.

I fully unrooted my device, and then rooted it again, just to see that it works. After the installation of supersu from the recovery, root access is not available right away. In the applications menu you must have SuperSU installer. Start it, and choose Play. It will open the play store. Choose Update and that's all.
When i install twrp supersu and then reboot to the system I really do not have anything related to supersu installed.... It seems like it is not mounting my /system as readwrite but i have set twrp to mount it as rw
I will try to dig some logs from recorvery
The logs are in /cache/recovery. Which recovery you use by the way?

These two lines are not a problem. The partitions are mounted already and that's why mount complains. After this, the script remounts them as rw (no complains from this, so the remount is successful). The rest looks OK, so the 'su' binary and the '.apk' should be installed. Can you list /system/xbin/ and /system/app/ through adb and also to execute cat /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Sure,

This script /system/etc/install-recovery.sh does not exist

There is something unclean in your system path. These lines from your log
Code:
- Removing old files
chcon: Could not label u:object_r:system_file:s0 with -h: No such file or directory
chcon: Could not label u:object_r:system_file:s0 with -h: No such file or directory
chcon: Could not label u:object_r:system_file:s0 with -h: No such file or directory
indicate that you have either /system/etc/install-recovery.sh or /system/bin/install-recovery.sh, prior the start of the installation (there is no other way they to be shown). What else you've done with the phone ... except to resize the data partition ? Also you have saved settings and the recovery loads them at the start. Remove them all. Start with clean settings. But first check in which of these two paths is your install-recovery.sh and what's inside. If all this does not help, probably a manual installation can do it.
... and just before to send this I saw it ... what's wrong with your data partition ?!?
Code:
/data | /dev/block/mmcblk0p37 | Size: 12143MB Used: 2732MB Free: 4602MB Backup Size: 2732MB
mine looks like this resized
Code:
/data | /dev/block/mmcblk0p37 | Size: 12195MB Used: 2505MB Free: 9690MB Backup Size: 2505MB
So the main question is what exactly you did with the device ?

Should I remove it?
and I will check the data partition, I have everything backuped so I can revert, but I think i resized it well I will check.
EDIT:
I have it repartitioned good.
I printed list of partition and
37 5000400 30535546 12.2 GiB FFFF userdata
38 30535548 30535646 49.5 KiB 0700 userdatabak
Looks exactly same as you have in your topic.
It has to be false value read by twrp.

No, leave the file (for now). It will be moved by the install-supersu.sh script (obviously he doesn't do it for some reason at the moment). Let's assume that the repartitioning is okay. From where you have these /system/bin/install-recovery.sh and /system/recovery-from-boot.p ? You have some official update probably ? I don't have such files in my backup.

[GUIDE] Convert ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 Z500M (P027) from CN to WW

Convert your ZenPad 3s 10 from CN to WW firmware
This guide will show you how to flash the WW firmware to your ZenPad Z500M that came preloaded with the CN (China) ROM. Up until recently, this was problematic because the CN firmware, as well as the 13.x series in general, is locked down. It does not provide flashing access via the common methods like unlocking+fastboot, recovery or SP Flash Tool. But thanks to a MediaTek temporary root tool invented by some evil genius, it's now possible to upgrade your CN ZenPad to the latest WW ROM. It's well known that this variant comes with Google apps and is fully unlockable and rootable.
DISCLAIMER
Any procedures described in this thread are done at your own risk. No one else will be responsible for any data loss, corruption or damage of your device, including that which results from software bugs.
REQUIREMENTS
An ASUS ZenPad Z500M (P027) tablet with 13.x firmware
Either:
A PC with ADB installed to interact with your device, or
A terminal emulator app
Familiarity with ADB (if using PC) and basic Linux shell commands
Familiarity with the Thanks button under XDA posts
INSTRUCTIONS
Read and understand this whole procedure before you start. This is about as dangerous as installing a full OTA update, and you would have to try hard to mess it up in a way that your device cannot be recovered. But keep in mind that it is a possibility. Make sure your battery has decent charge or plug it into the charger.
Go to Amazing Temp Root for MediaTek ARMv8 and read the directions on how to open a root shell in ADB or a terminal emulator app, and make sure you understand them. Download the latest release of mtk-su. Support the developer.
Download and unzip the recovery image to your tablet. Link below.
Open a root shell and flash the image to your recovery partition with:
Code:
dd if=recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/mtk-msdc.0/11230000.MSDC0/by-name/recovery bs=1048576
You may need to specify the full path of the img file.
Download the latest 14.x WW firmware from ASUS' support site. Link below.
Put the official zip package in the root of your internal storage. Rename the file by changing the letters "WW" to "CN". That is, rename UL-P027-WW-14.0210.1806.33-user.zip to UL-P027-CN-14.0210.1806.33-user.zip. This has to be done in the same boot session as the recovery flashing step.
At this point, the OS updater should detect the file, prepare the upgrade and ask you to reboot. Confirm that you want to reboot to install. Make sure that you have succeeded step 4.
Your tablet will reboot and automatically install the WW 14.x package. You may need/want to do a factory reset after this.
Alternative method to zip file autodetection: reboot to recovery and do an adb sideload install.
NOTES
Do not try to install any 13.x firmware package using this method. That's because if something goes wrong and your device fails to boot, you would not be able to get root access to repair it. It may be next to impossible to recover it. The 13.x releases are locked down, unlike the 14.x (Android 7) ones.
If for any reason you reboot your tablet after doing the dd flashing step but before successfully installing the 14.x ROM, your original recovery will get restored. You will have to flash it again before trying the upgrade.
Do not try to downgrade from a 14.x FW to 13.x via TWRP. It is a fact that this will make your tablet unbootable because the 13.x packages do not provide all the necessary images.

Read-only file system error - way out?
Hi diplomatic,
Thanks a lot for sharing this beautiful method. I had two of these tablets with CN firmware and had pretty much given up on them until now.
Edit 2: I successfully used the adb sideload method to update to WW firmware. The autodetect did not work for me.
Original post:
I have had success with steps 1-4 (UID 0, selinux: permissive),
but when I am trying to paste the downloaded firmware file in root folder ( / ) I get the error Read-only file system. I pasted the renamed firmware file in /sdcard/ but the autodetection doesn't work.
I tried remounting root '/' with
Code:
mount -o rw,remount /
I was then able to paste the renamed firmware file (WW to CN) to (root) / . The autodetection still doesn't work.
Is there a guide you can point me to for adb sideload install? I have exposure to linux but haven't explored android innards much. I will keep looking.
Thanks again, really hoping I am able to make this work!
@bkmiictian, I'm glad you figured it out. (And finally have someone respond after like 8 months. ) But FWIW, the upgrade package should go into your internal shared storage to be detected. It's just following the standard installation procedure for Asus. Nothing to do with the root dir of the file system.

I had similar issues, was not clear what to do, how to make it recognized.
Here I found great detailed explanation on the asus website (can't put full link as I'm newbie support/FAQ/1011948/ )
Apart from that, great guide !! Thanks a lot!!
Spent hours before that finding a way to either root it or install Google Apps. Tried all rooting apps I could find ...
thanks for the details procedure
Please all noted the file should place under "internal shared storage" not root as seen in adb.
Details steps as provide by Asus in its FAQ:

Hi, Thanks so much for the tutorial.
I'm also having issues with the Z500M with CN firmware.
I followed the steps until getting the selinux: permissive message on ADB.
But I'm lost on what to do with the Recovery.img & the WW 14.x firmware
I copied the files into the root directory, but I don't understand what to do next.
Edit:
Found the procedure to manually install the firmware update from Asus.
Disconnected the USB cable & it told me there was a new update.
After updating, it restarted and showed an android with the message "installing system update" but then it just gave an Error.
Then it restarted saying System update failed. Unknow error. System was restored to previous configuration.
I guess I'm doing something wrong...
I think my issue may be Step 4.
dd if=recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/mtk-msdc.0/11230000.MSDC0/by-name/recovery bs=1048576
You may need to specify the full path of the img file.

dd: /root/recovery.img: Permission denied

Yes, this is the main point of this procedure. Where did you extract recovery.img? If it's, say, in your internal storage, you may need to specify
dd if=/storage/emulated/0/recovery.img of=/dev/block.....
Only reboot to install the FW if you have succeeded with this step.

Will try the whole process from the beginning.
EDIT:
It worked!
Thanks a lot Diplomatic!
I made a factory reset to the tablet & followed again the steps & the update was successful.
So if I had 14x on Android 7, can I just move to the twrp recovery part of the forum, why not just manually update to 14x from 13x if 14x can be unlocked? Am I missing something?
