[Q] How to flash a rom after rooting - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

OK I apologize ahead of time for what is probably a ridiculously easy question for most.
The ATT 1X is my first android and this is the first phone that I've rooted.
I read for hours and followed the instruction to a T. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM.
I can get into Recover/Boot mode or whatever you call it on phone startup, I have the Super user icon in my files, but I have no idea what to do now.
I found a ROM that I thought was worth a shot (CleanROM 2.5) but I don't know what to do. I've read and researched for hours now and everyone's problems seem to be complicated but no one talks about this.
I downloaded the ROM to my computer but I don't know what to do with the files, I can't find a .bat file or anything to initialize it and I am stuck.
I've wiped the data and done everything in the steps but I'm stuck at actually installing it. I know I'm obviously doing something wrong but I feel like I'm very close to what needs to be done.
Any help is welcome, thanks

I recommend you check QA thread found in a sub forum under your devices section and you review the stickied post for ROM install or Google "android install custom ROM " (remove quotes). Too much info on this already to type it all back out here. Did you watch you tube newb video you agreed to have watched when getting an xda account?
Essentially you now made it so your phone has the ability via CWM Recovery to now boot to that to install ROM zip or continue to use rooted stock ROM (how you flashed that zip for superuser is baasically same as how you flash a cwm compatible ROM zip (MOST but not all ROMs)) which with SuperUser can now run privelleged code if it is made to or requires it to run.

Thanks. I know this must seem so stupid, but I've been searching this forum, google, youtube and pretty much everything else for how to do this and I get it all and understand what's happening.
I just don't know where to put this ROM (which folder) to get it to install.

So after all that searching you never came across instructions informing you to put the zip on your phones storage?
You should probably just hold off a bit on flashing anything then. Not being mean but it sounds like you are confused by the process and end result. Step back and do some basic checklisting.

Download the rom you want and DO NOT UN ZIP IT. THEN PLACE THAT ZIP ON PHONE STORAGE AND BOOT INTO YOUR CUSTOM RECOVERY . HIT INSTALL FROM SD CARD AND MAKE SURE THE ROM YOU DOWNLOADED IS LISTED BUT DONT FLASH YET. GO BACK THE THE MAIN SCREEN OF RECOVERY. NOW MAKE A BACKUP. WHEN THAT IS DONE GO BACK TO MAIN RECOVERY SCREEN AND HIT WIPE PHONE DATA AND THEN CONFIRM. THEN GO AND HIT CLEAR CACHE OPTION. THEN GO BACK AND GO TO ADVANCED AND CLEAR DALVICK CACHE. NOW YOUR READY TO FLASH. GO TO INSTALL ZIP FROM SD AND FLASH YOUR ROM. FIRST BOOT ALWAYS TAKES LONG AFTER FLASHING A NEW ROM

Been posting on the internet for decades, don't worry about being mean. I'm here to learn. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM so that I could take advantage before the phone asked me to update the software to the 1.85 version.
My phone works fine now, and I did everything correctly which is what I was setting out to do. I'm in no rush to flash a ROM, but now that I'm ready I'm itching to try it out.

This is the process as I understand it and as stupid as it sounds, I'm hung up on where in phone storage to place the zip file of the rom. I don't see a storage folder, an SD folder, nothing that seems obvious and nothing that is in any of the things I've been reading or watching.

Plug phone into computer. When prompted, select Disk Drive. On computer, browse to your computer, open the 'disk drive', and copy the zip there. THAT is your sdcard as seen by your phone.

Seriously?
Wow I feel dumb. I was looking for a sub folder or directory specifically for storage and backup.
Thanks, I think that should be enough for me to do this tonight.

Yeah, some phones you may have to drag down notifications and tap USB mode or USB connected notification (it has standard USB icon and only appears when phone attached to computer). Then tap either USB storage mode or the button to enable USB drives. Then on computer just like a thumb drive it adds drive letter. Copy anything there that is /mnt/sdcard or /sdcard on phone. BE SURE TO EJECT DRIVES BEFORE AND TAP TO DISABLE USB ON PHONE IN THAT ORDER THEN UNPLUG FROM USB (failure to do so COULD result in data loss or corruption which you DO NOT want to happen to a ROM zip)!
Then boot in to recovery choose install zip from sdcard (not apply update from sdcard) as install from allows you to browse for any zip and install. Usually Vol up and down moves through menus and power or search button is enter. BE SURE THE ROM YOU DOWNLOAD IS SPECIFICALLY MEANT FOR YOUR DEVICE OR YOU COULD EASILY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. PLEASE REVIEW HOW TO RUN NANDROID BACKUPS AND RUN ONE BEFORE INSTALLING A DIFFERENT ROM.
I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH IF UNSURE DON'T PROCEED, BE SURE YOU RUN NANDROID BACKUPS AND ENSURE YOU FOLLOW INSTALL DIRECTIONS INCLUDED WITH YOUR ROM. ALSO, NEVER FORMAT EMMC (AKA INTERNAL SDCARD) IT ALMOST GUARENTEES A BRICKED DEVICE.

Is all good, and now you see why we were kinda scratching our heads wondering what was up a little . Glad we could help get you going though welcome to the world of custom ROMs. Please just be careful and always do backups and take it slow and read things 2x before even attempting once. While it can be easy to do it is also easy to accidentally brick your device (make it not work and have to be sent out for repairs).

anyone else completely confused?

I'm so confused with all the lingo, root, kernel, s-off, ruu.
It just seems so overwelming. I don't think I want custom roms, all I want is att stuff removed, and faster data speeds.
And I'd like a way to return to stock in case I need to return the phone.
What phone are you coming from?
Read, as much as you can Google is your friend. Also if your having problems with goldcard checkout the unlockr. Setting up sdk isn't all that bad. This is coming from a renewed rookie with HTC phones because I've been away from adb for two years since I got rid of my dream and magic.
Coming from an iPhone. Don't understand anything about adb, sdk, terminal, etc.
Haven't tried making the gold card yet, ordered an sdcard but it hasn't come in yet.

Just use the card that came with the phone for goldcard. Use the goldcard helper tool from the market, get the mcc 2 number from the tool, go to the link provided, insert the mcc 2 number into the box on the page where it asks for it, get the file that was emailed to you, download the hack kit in the stickied thread of development, after installing Android sdk, unzip the hack kit using 7zip and only 7zip into the tools folder located in the Android folder. From that point you are ready to create a goldcard. That's where the sticky thread is your friend.
I know it sounds like a lot and in the end once you read up and understand how to use adb you'll understand its not that bad. Remember i am a rookie as well with most of this and would be glad to help as you progress
I think creating the gold card seems like the easy step, found a program that will do it and upload it to phone without needing the sdk.
My concern is all the other stuff, different kernels, different radios, etc. Downgrading the radio loses sound, so then you have to upgrade it again, but then the sound isn't as good, etc.
Then someone posted the stock kernel, compared to a telus kernel, what's the difference, and why put one over the other?

The program doesn't work you need mcc2 number. The sound problem is a correlation of combining the dhd time with our kernel.

This will help with adb.Once you start tinkering you will figure it out quickly. As far as reading all the sound issues its really personal preference. You have to do these thing on your device and see if you have the same issue. Alot of the times you will find it that it comes down to different strokes for different folks. I myself have none of the issues that others have other than a weak external speaker. Reading is a great tool but dont get overwhelmed with the information your taking in because a good chunk will not pertain to you and your device. Just stick with the core information and what the op stated
The sound issue is the only thing that is not 100%, which will be fixed soon enough. We will get our own source soon enough, but for the time being dhd roms will do fine with either the stock or TELUS kernel. Personally the TELUS is better for fast data speeds.

Just my two cents and I hope you don't take offense to this, but you picked the wrong phone to jump into rooting and customizing since it's a new phone and the forums aren't yet up to speed on info. I would first read up in the Rodgers Magic 32A forum on how gold cards work, recovery, fastboot, adb, and custom roms work - these phones are broadly used and have been around for a while too.
I've read the instructions in the hack kit, and I still dont' get it.
I need to download the sdk, found that at http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
It says Terminal on the phone, so I need to download a terminal app from the market?
The commands look simple enough if I can figure out how to do them.
Edit, also need to download HTC sync?
read the guide Ive listed on how to install adb on the sdk and you will be fine.

After the downgrade, terminal gets installed with the Rom. Always remember to enable debugging and charge only. The terminal part is the hardest. Also after receiving temproot exit out so you can go back into your sdk folder. All the hackerize commands are done from the kit location.
Well, I can't do this at work, was planning on trying, but the sdcard reader in my printer here doesn't work, so I'll have to try it with my laptop at home. Just wasted time downloading all the packages.
Still seems very cumbersome and confusing.

Once you have root, you can install ROM manager from the market. Run ROM manager, scroll to the bottom and tap on "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" and select 2.5.1.3 or 2.5.1.4. DO NOT INSTALL 3.0.0.5, it is NOT compatible with Froyo ROMs.
Once you tap one of those versions, it will automatically download and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Load the ROM you want to install onto your SD card, and in ROM manager, hit "reboot into recovery".
When you get to recovery, go to Backup/Restore and make a backup of your current ROM. Then do a data/cache wipe (factory restore) and then go to Install ZIP from SD Card and select your new ROM. Flash and you're on your merry way

Read the included readme file in the kit its part of step two. The kit is designed so all you need to do is follow the instructions and input a few commands and it pretty much does everything for you minus pushing the power button to get into hboot. The second hackerize command is the actual downgraded Rom.

[Q] Any chance I could get a hand "modding" my phone.

I've been on this site a little over than an hour and a member for about 10 minutes now and i'm trying to find ways to better my devices performance, I am a little familiar with cyanogen mod and know that is is not yet available for the SGS4G and i know better than asking when it will be released. How ever I did see something called 'bionix Black Ice ROM' people i here seemed to be stoked about that. Now what exactly is that? will it help my phones performance? will it get rid of all the bloatware? next if it does help with all of that could somebody step by step walk me through the process or make a youtube vdeo showing how to install black ice step by step? i'm obviously new to all this and really don't wanna brick my phone.
thanks, GD
hi! welcome to the forums, btw! this is the best place to find out stuff about your phone. i was in your place about a month ago, so i know exactly how confused you are.
you should read this for everything referencing your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554
to answer your questions: yes. lol. no more bloat, everything will be much faster and basically you will have the phone of your dreams.
i am no expert, but i would root the phone using superoneclickroot. then download root explorer. get krylon's final cwm. download the rom (black ice or frost or w/e you prefer), download bali 3.1, the ext4 converter, and maybe a new modem (optional). flash those following the very well written guides by the devs and you should be ok.
everyone here is pretty awesome and we're all willing to help (even me...who barely knows anything).
Ok, i've already Rooted my phone. I guess now i need to download said programs. any links on these well written descriptive how to? because all the ones i saw confused the hell out of me and id like to believe i'm not completely retarded. Thank you for the welcome BTW.
i would start with krylon final cwm. his directions are pretty straightforward. i used root explorer to move the file where it needed to be.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
i am assuming you downloaded the rom already from the CWM rom section in the bible. its up to you. im biased towards bionix frost, but black ice is just as amazing.
i would also dl the ext converter and bali 3.1 kernel as well. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123039) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080871). place all of the zip files you download into the root of your sd card....which means that if you connect your phone to the computer and open it using windows explorer, it is that first window, which lists all of the folders. dont put these files in folders or anything.
once that is done, i restarted my phone in recovery shutting down fully and pressing the power+volume up+volume down. once there, i went to reinstall packages to get into cwm.
then when this loads, i wiped the system/factory reset and wiped the cache. then i went to mounts and storage and mounted my system. (the final mounting output should be: unmount, mount, mount, unmount). i then scrolled to "go back"
i choose install zip file from sd card. choose zip file, which should be the second option if my memory serves me right. scroll of ext converter and install that one. then when that is done, go back to install file from sd card, choose black ice or frost (i LOVE frost) and install that one. then when that is done, i flash my bali 3.1 uv kernel. when that is flashed, i click go back and choose reboot system. once that is done, you will see the galaxy s screen for like 5 min or so followed by the team whiskey logo. once you see this, it will take another minute or so to load up. once you see that the rom loads up...LET THE PHONE SIT FOR 10 minutes. i know it seems long, but just let it sit.
after 10 min or so, i would go into your about phone options and check and see that you have bali3.1 and that the rom is correct.

you can flash a modem too (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117331) using the same process as flashing any other zip file.
remember, the first option in choosing a zip file is update.zip from krylons final cwm. do not flash this after the rom/ext/whatever. im not sure if this has been addressed (im still a noob), but everytime i did that, i bricked my phone. lol. so just to answer your question before you wonder...cause i always wondered whether i should flash that or not. lol.
hope this helps. feel free to press the thank button.

Hi, i am very new and a noob at this site and rooting in general. Hear me out. Im stuck on getting the recovery on the phone. ADB push? Root explorer? I cannot find /system/bin.. PLz walk me tru.
If you rooted your phone, download root explorer from the market. then follow the guides I listed in the post. If you read through the threads, everything has already been asked.
Root explorer is a file manager that allows you to see everything. there are other explorers, like super manager, but I like root explorer. To push a file, download it to your computer, move it to your sd card, open root explorer, find the file, long press, click move, and then navigate to the destination folder and paste.
To get into recovery to flash roms, shut the phone off, then press power and the two volume buttons at the same time. You'll get to a screen with blue text. Click reinstall packages and you'll see krylon's cwm. Follow my previous post prior to going into download mode though.

Can't root my Sensation- Please Help!

I have an HTC sensation z7z10a. I purchased this phone to be able to get on AT&T's 3&4g frequencies without having to upgrade my unlimited data plan for non smart phones. So far so good, my phone gets 4g and AT$T is not aware that I have a smartphone.
Naturally after spending enough time in XDA and other phone forums to figure this out I became interested in flashing a custom ROM.
I used the revolutionary method to gain S-OFF, installed CWM, and used CWM to create a backup image. I've managed to fully wipe and then restore to my backup image, so CWM is working.
My problem is whenever I go to flash a custom rom I don't understand which file to select in recovery mode. Every zip I have downloaded, (including the one I need to finally get my phone rooted) opens up to a series of subfolders, none of which contain the files I need. The sub folders are typically : System, Data and META-INF. So I can't get rooted without being able to use the recovery mode to flash.
I used my friend's pc netbook in order to run Revolutionary and install CWM. Now I am using my Macbook Pro to download potential Roms zip files and move them onto my phones SD card. Could this be the problem?
I"ve searched and searched for and answer to this issue to no avail, please help me to figure this out. I'm stumped.
The zip you have to flash is the ROM you download...am I missing something?
You do not need to extract the zip file. Just put it on the SD card and then go to the recovery mode and select the option install zip from sd card and install it. I believe if you flash a custom rom, you would be automatically rooted, so no need to root it separately. Hope this helped

Thanks for this advice, this is my first time attempting this. I think you are right that most roms come with root access so I may be able to skip that step.
I know what you are saying, don't extract the file, just move the zip over as is. Only on my mac the files are arriving as a folder with subfolders, not a zip package. This HAS to be the problem! I will look harder for Mac info on downloaded zips to see if I can figure out why this is happening. Thanks again.
Update:
So I fixed the folder problem by going into safari settings and unchecking the open safe downloads box. No all the zip files I'm downloading are staying intact as zips.
However I just tried to flash revolution hd with no success. The full wipe zip for this rom was a failure as well. I will now try downloading the root zip again and see if rooting first helps at all.
So now I am rooted. Success!

Ah....Steve Jobs and his desire to prevent the user from doing anything useful strikes from beyond the grave.
This is why I won't touch a Mac. They want to do everything for you, even if it's not what you want or need to be done. On the plus side, at least you only have to push 1 button to get the Mac to do the wrong thing!
Glad you figured it out! Be careful with the ROM flashing though. It quickly becomes a life consuming obsession.

[Q] Stuck somewhere on CWM after flashing several roms

here it goes, i flashed several roms, it goes straight to CWM after samsung logo. Did i mount/unmount sys, blah blah blah... the answer is yes. Have I checked all my drivers to make sure they are working...YES! I opened up ODIN and it will not locate my phone. Oh it must be the usb cord... It cannot be after using several different cords... maybe the port aint working either..lets check *beep* wrong! Everything is in working order... I can get into download mode from the CWM, i can flash whatever the hell i like it will not pass the samsung logo or the CWM. Maybe there is something i can sneak into my sd and a zip file that makes it all working...not possible! so.. i need help.
I cannot go straight to the download mode after samsung logo, it will only boot up CWM red. I can get into green CWM by clicking sd:update.zip which doesnt do much for me or my phone. when i move around in CWM red. it would say no cache recovery log, in the download mode it would say no custom binary.
I would LOVE to get my phone up and running... going on to my second day at it!
Perhaps you can copy a working rom onto the external SD card from the computer and install from zip like that..
Just in put the zip into the SD card, navigate cwm to external_SD and try and load.from that zip..
Not sure.. I'm a noob

I managed to get my phone up and running after million of tries getting the phone to be read by the PC and ODIN.
However, I cannnot download any apps from the martket due to error (-101). I have gotten all my apps back through external SD from the stock file manager.
Should I root the phone again and bypass the market to external SD (rooted apps) and flash a rom and the market will be working?

go to settings/manage applications and look for the market app and uninstall the updates. then you can download apps...
same happen to me when I go to stock, and looking for a root explorer app to download for replacing the recovery file.
take a look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293751

I go in there all the time ;-) however I've already uninstall the market (the updates) and downloaded a new one from my external sd and it still says error (-101).
I am getting ready to root the whole 9 yard again, BUT my phone cannot be read once again, it will charge but it cannot be discovered. WHY SAMSUNG GOT to be SO COMPLICATED!?!
I guess the MODs can close this thread, since my phone is up and limping. Thanks for those that "helped" out, right!

Sounds like you're upset, but you're displaying poor attitude.
No one forced you to do anything to your phone.
You choose to make the changes yourself.
Shouldn't you read up more on it before you start?
Did you really think anyone here owes you anything?
Try these:

And this!
It should help.
wow quickie did you come up with that all by yourself?
Was I suppose to ask nicely? Even when ya'll bash newbies by looking at their post counts? *clapping* way to go!
OH thank you for that google link, my phone is running 100percent now lol.

look at qkster's signature! it has everything you need... i spend many hours trying to understand by myself this... and im still think im a noob...
anyways, if you can go to stock and know how to root...
this is the checklist:
1) have stock
2) have root access
3) install recovery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y09p-J_g_Rg
have the rom on the sd card...

[Q] Rooting: I have no idea?

Currently running 2.3.3
I've tried rooting this damn phone twice, followed the steps yet every time my phone just resets completely.
I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong ... Is there a guide that's VERY specific in the steps to root? I tried youtube, couldn't find anything, and the method of going into boot was different so I'm lost...
Here's the questions I have on the steps...
1. Install latest Clockworkmod Recovery using NVFlash, if you haven’t already done so. - What do I do with this file ?
2. Download the root zip package referenced above.
3. Put the zip package on your internal or external sd card on your G2X. Do not unzip the package.
4. Turn off phone and boot into Clockworkmod Recovery by pressing volume down and power and hold until the fancy LG (second one) appears. - Isn't this the phone reset method? The youtube video I watched said to press "volume up + volume down"
5. Select install zip from sd card. Select and flash the root zip package. Note: You navigate in Clockwordmod Recovery by using the volume keys up and down and commit the action by pressing the power button. - Install the zip or clockword mod?
6. Reboot your phone. You are now rooted.
- I just need something really in depth, step by step by step ... If anyone is willing it'd be nice >.<
-Thanks

the rom selection is your choice I dont know what you want to do, obviously since you just stated you want root (SU permissions)
if you know what you basically want let me know in here or PM and I'll help you out. Only cause you kind of searched, yet you are obviously brand new to all of this.

Well that video is what completely confused me ... the process seemed different in its steps to root. I followed the steps in that video, and the steps in the original post but still couldn't get into the root..
Now I will say I have no idea on which ROM to pick. In fact, that's probably what messed me up in the first place.. Do you have any suggestions? The Hellfire ROM seems to be popular amongst users on the forum. Basically, I just want a stable ROM that's going to allow me to remove stock applications, free up bloatware, and make my phone just run overall smoother.. and of course ability to over clock, under clock. Extra goodies are a plus ..

-Rooting takes 15 minutes if you follow directions, after you get all the downloads.
-Get the apx drivers first install them regardless of everything it helps connect the phone and makes sure the process goes smoothly, if you do not know how to install drivers for a phone... Google it.
http://www.mediafire.com/?kgfk5234e4hhggc
I will suggest this since it easiest now a days. Read the directions over and over. then proceed to attempt.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566681
after power up with the recovery select wipe/ format data (this will wipe the phone so your apps and settings are kaput so, make sure you have your google contacts and what not backed up with regular sync through settings. Your texts will be gone also, there are apps to back those up, search them if you want. After booting up and wiping select to install rom from which ever area you put the zip files at (DO NOT PUT THEM IN A FOLDER JUST LAY THEM ON THE THE SD-CARD WITH DRAG AND DROP.) First rom then kernel, if you choose to use it. then power on.
The rom I suggest for you, it is easy one step to install, then boot... LET SET FOR 10 MINUTES AFTER YOU BOOT UP! This allows the phone to adjust itself and all it's new entities and what not.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400620
For the kernel to over-clock and under-clock (if you do not know then Google it).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19506802&postcount=1065
Make sure the rom and kernel are on the external sd-card if that is what you are using or vice versa.
I think that covers everything I don't know if it does or not right now as I just winged this altogether. Any questions ask I'll answer in a timely matter as I'm just watching Californication right now, lol.
ive followed what you said and it wont let me download the links that videos says to. takes me to a site and ask for money. help
I gave you all the links, you said the video didn't help so disregard that. Idk what else to tell you.

This is my take, to help. This is as dumb as it gets to install CWM and root (optional). Click Thanks when you're done.
Step 1.
Download the APX Drivers from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?q0hn0d6etw9hg8b
I mirrored it to my mediafire. Thanks go to TGA_Gunnman!
OPTIONAL: to root, read this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24992835&postcount=182
Step 2.
Turn off your phone, pull the battery.
Step 3.
Connect a microusb cable to your computer.
Step 4.
Extract the "One-Click-G2x-recovery-flasher-09-23.rar" to a folder. You'll see 2 folders, NVFlash and APX.
Step 5.
Right click My Computer, click on Manage. Go to Device Manager. Open up the APX folder you extracted, as well as the NVFlash folder (see Step 8).
Step 6.
Push and hold Vol Up+Vol Down. Plug in the USB Cable to your phone. Your computer will beep, indicating device plugged in, unless you have it on mute. This does NOT reset your phone in any way. You SHOULD get a dialog telling you to install drivers or something. If not, switch to Device Manager and you should see an uninstalled device.
Step 7.
Install those drivers (in the APX folder).
Step 8.
Open up the NVFlash folder and locate "OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe". Run it.
Step 9.
Take your pick if you want internal recovery or external recovery (w/ sdcard), then click it. You'll see a S/W download on your phone. Wait until the blue screen finishes. If no errors pop up, see Step 10. If an error does pop up, redo install (as instructed).
Step 10.
Let go of Vol Up+Vol Down. Pull out USB cable. Get into CWM recovery using Vol Up+Power when phone is off. Let go when you see the blue wavey LG logo.
the problem i am having is trying to get that flasher to download
Rooting is not for everyone. If you are having this much trouble, you should find a friend that has done it and let them go at it.
