As I understand it, no Samsung tablet has an actual phone; you would need to use a VOIP app like Skype to make calls, correct? I was kinda hopin' to ditch my smartphone and go tab only...

I am using Tab 7 plus for my phone replacement. However, you have to make sure you buy the right model. It is because Samsung also sell the wifi only for those models, so if you got the wifi only model, you won't be able to make phone call.
I don't know where you from, and which model of tabs Samsung selling in your country. GT-P6200(7+) / GT-P6800(7.7) can be used to make phone calls like the normal phones.

If you have WIFI only model, you could port your number to google voice and use grooveip. Of course you'd always need to be within range of wifi, but it works

I have a Galaxy Tab 7+ (GT-P6200), and I can use it perfectly as a phone: I can make calls and send texts (SMS). It has full phone functionality. Check for a SIM card slot if you're not sure about WIFI or 3G models. If you can insert a SIM card then surely you can use it to make cell calls.

I currently have a WiFi only 7+ tablet. Just to clarify, T-Mobile was offering the 7+ for $99.00 USD with a two year agreement. (ending 05-08-2012) Their version is 4G with a sim slot. All well and good, except they are only offering data plans with it - no voice.
I net chatted with a T-Mobile rep as well as called one up to double confirm, that the 7+ they are offering does not have phone capabilities. This leads me to believe this is a U.S. only issue as I have seen reviews on YouTube demonstrating the phone feature by tabbers outside the U.S.
As for VOIP, I'm currently using Skype, though I plan to check out Grove IP and Google voice. I was really close to going for this deal. The price was excellent, but without a dedicated phone capability, I couldn't justify it.

With the T-Mobile version you will use the T-mobile sim card to connect to the internet only , and then use skype , GV , or any other VOIP app to use the tablet as a phone. Unfortunately to this T-MO tab you cannot flash a ROM that has built in phone capabilities ( like you can do to the old ATT or T-MO Galaxy Tab ) because the T-MO radio is different from the P6200 model.

UK: Are there any free call forwarding services to UK Mobile

I have just replaced my WiFi version of the the note 10.1 to the 3g version.
I have tried my UK t-mobile SIM in the tablet and it works fine for data and calls. I am on one of their old flext tariffs which includes unlimited browsing too.
My question is if anyone knows of any provider that has free call forwarding to a UK Mobile number? i.e. I want to get a basic sim for my handset and be able to divert calls to the tablet when necessary.
Ideally, I wanted it the other way round so that I can divert from my tablet to my phone but T-Mobile do not include diverts as part of the inclusive minutes.
I know I can swap the Sims to which ever device I want to use but Samsung have not made it easy, on the note 2, you have to remove the back cover to get to the sim and on the tablet, its not easy to remove the sim with my fat fingers.
Any help or an alternative solution will be appreciated.
Tmobile call forwarding does in fact use your inclusive minutes. Does for me anyway on the full monty plan.

Can I use Samsing Gear S2 with carrier 1 and my phone is carrier 2?

I have a plan with T-Mobile but would an AT&T version of the Gear S2 3g on an AT&T plan work with my T-Mobile smartphone?
To further clarify, I would not be moving the AT&T Gear S2 to T-Mobile. Just forward the calls through the company or the app.
Your Phone and the Gear S2 do not have to be on the same network. My work phone is provided by Verizon. My family is on T-Mobile. I purchased the original Gear S and now upgraded to the Gear S2 on T-Mobile.
When you are BT connected to your phone the watch is like any other BT device. When you are using your Gear S2 in the standalone (no BT connection to phone) then your phone merely call forwards your calls and text to whatever number you tell it to. In this case you forward items to your Gear S2 number.
So it sounds like your phone is on T-Mobile. Your Gear S2 would be on AT&T. When you are BT connected to your phone, Verizon is your carrier and the phone does all the work and BT transfers your notifications and calls over to the Gear. When you are separated from your phone and a call or text comes to your phone it is forwarded to your T-Mobile number on the watch.
I have used my Verizon phone with my Gear s and now S2 for the past year + very successfully.
I think the only difference will be when carriers have their Number Sync functionality, where both watch and phone ring/vibrate simultaneously. With two different carriers the watch rings/vibrates after the phone does. I only have the Bluetooth version so obviously haven't tried this, but curious to know what the caller's experience is like - namely how many times does their call to you ring on their end. Reason I ask is cause many callers have gotten used to hanging up before they know your vm will pick up. Thinking if someone calls you and lets it ring 4 times and hangs up, you'd never know it from your watch, if you didn't also have your phone with you. Sorry for the digression, but I like to think these things through for real life situations.

Number sync will definitely change the way the watch and phone operate. AT&T is supposed to be the first carrier to go to number sync, but as I understand as of right now if you have a Gear S2 with them you have a separate number for your watch.

This is where I hesitate. I don't get many calls often, mostly messages. If someone calls me, unless they are a spam call, they always have the intention of leaving me a message one way or another. However, I'd rather they not endure a long ring time to get to me if I AM available.
I was mostly curious about using this for calling out, because T-Mobile has some weak areas where I live but offers a better package for my needs but At&t's signal is stronger. I was hoping to bypass having semi-bad service.
I plan on going into At&t to see if they'll let me try out your theories. Worst case is I pay their restocking fee for a trial run. I'll let you know my results.

Yeah, my biggest concern is calls where people hang up after 3 or 4 rings. Having to wait for up to 10 rings is a problem. Thankfully most peoples text these days, and the ones who don't might just wait out 10 rings.

Bluetooth connecting will definitely work. You would need a device plan with AT&T to get the cell radio to work on the watch. You can talk to T-Mobile to see if they can accept the watch onto their service as getting a plan with AT&T for a watch only will probably be expensive.
I don't know how carriers are treating the new devices that are cell talk/data capable. You can use a device from one carrier on another carrier (GMS/CDMA sometimes is an issue). Will T-Mobile accept the AT&T Gear S-2 and program it for you (it has an e-sim). One of the benefits of e-sim is supposed to be that you can program a device for any carrier.

So I've been wanting a Gear S since before the first one came out (late '2014) to replace to replace a work phone. You mentioned that a when you watch is on stand-alone mode it acts as your t-mobile line. The question is, what happens if someone tries to contact you on your T-mobile line when it is BT connected to your Verizon phone? Does the watch forward the call (T-Mobile) to your handset (Verizon)?
I have the exact opposite scenario as you. I have a Verizon work phone that I use occasionally and hate carrying, and a personal T-Mobile phone. I want to switch my Verizon work number to the Gear S2 and and use my T-Mobile (personal) most of the time. Since it will be BT-connected most of the time, will I still be able to receive calls/texts from the Verizon number?
I have the S2 Classic SM-R735AZKAATT (for AT&T obviously) but I'd like to have it set up with T-Mobile.
Can I take this into T-Mobile and set up service? If so, anyone know how much?
eSim is a lie ....
The eSim was supposed to have carrier switching. Was just on the phone with Samsung and they just blow sunshine up my *____* about it all. There really is no carrier switching, and in fact appears to be harder to do with these devices than with a phone (at least you can root a phone).
- So the whole carrier switching appears to have been a marketing ploy (a lie) to excite people into buying the more expensive version, but then once you have it there really is no "switching" at all, and Samsung simply wont re-flash them to a generic S2/3g program no matter what. In fact Samsung wont help you at all, you cant even pay them to help once off warranty - if you don't have warranty, Samsung simply doesn't care, "to bad, you suck - haha" - (was pretty much what I got from them). Also note that "YOU" do not really own the watch. The carrier has a leash on the product even after unlock, even after warranty, even you own it outright and left the carrier, and Samsung will not help cut that leash or enable the full potential of the eSim capabilities in the watch "because carrier [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]". They got their money from the multi-Billion corporate, so don't expect em to give a rats ass about "US". So, physically the eSim can do it, but they have destroyed the watches potential capabilities by proprietary programming and no access to the watches hardware abilities, and unwilling to work with or help people who outright own the product. The carries own em like a B___, thus, you don't really own it - they do. - needless to say, it was a serious pi$$-0ff to find out the eSim thing was a total sham by Samsung.

What do I need to do to my SM-P905 to use it as a phone?

I just pulled the trigger on a refurbished SM-P905 (Verizon) tablet. I would like to have the option of sticking my phone's SIM card in it and use the tablet as my phone (with an ear piece, of course).
What would I need to do to the tablet in order to make that work? Root? Install additional apps? Would CM12 work?
Assume that I have a Verizon cell phone that I would pull the SIM from and put into the tablet when I needed to use it as such.

I have the international version of the note pro SM-P905
from my previous knowledge,
any android tablet can be used as a phone except that phone calls will be heard through the speaker unless you use an ear piece.
I already have a phone sim installed on my note pro and it is working fine out of the box
I use it the sim for data and I made a few phone calls without any problems
no need for root or anything else
I don't know about Verizon note pro model but it is suppose to be the same

I haven't tried a phone sim on I cant say for sure on the phone calls themselves.
however I am using a T-mobile tablet sim with text messaging and the text messaging does not seem to work on this tablet.
Verizon and sprint use CDMA for voice, SMS and 3G data
When they moved to LTE (Which is a GSM technology) they basically just added a sim card slot for data on top of the existing CDMA hardware.
Some Verizon phones also have the Sim slot enabled for GSM calling for people that travel internationally.
unfortunately most tablets (and even a lot of phones) dont have that feature and only use it for LTE
I suspect that this is the case here.
there is chance it might make calls if activated under Verizon though you would need a dialer installed. (Perhaps someone with one activated with Verizon could chime in if they have tried it)
The best option I've found on an alternate carrier is to use your google voice number in the hangouts app to make VOIP calls.
it works great for that and you basically have calling coverage anywhere you have data.
Groove IP also works pretty good and doesnt use much data.
unfortunately VOIP is the only option I know of.
On a side note, as stated above the international version has the full phone features in GSM format, this is often the case with international versions of tablets.
Sadly the US only versions often have things stripped out by the carrier, sometimes out of necessity and sometimes to push people to use their service etc.
Thanks for the info! That's exactly what I was afraid of, that the Verizon version of the OS on this tablet wouldn't include the phone/texting software. So I'm wondering if the CM12 rom does..?
Unfortunately while the Verizon version is rootable on android 4.4 there are no custom roms for it currently.
Also note that they released the 5.1 update for the Verizon model but its not yet rootable.
I've kept mine on 4.4 for this reason but a lot of people have opted to give up root for the newer software.
I know this all sounds like bad news but this is really an amazing tablet, I actually use it exclusively and no longer use windows at home.
I also often use it for calls over VOIP.
but unfortunately if custom roms and voice calls are what you are looking for in a tablet the international version would have likely been the better choice.
The Verizon Version does have a few perks due to the snapdragon 800 processor, charging faster being the biggest.
Thanks! I just purchased mine and its supposed to get here tomorrow. I'm probably going to send it back. I don't want to be stuck on 4.4 just so I can have root, and I don't want to deal with not even having root on 5.1. Then add-on that you can't unlock the bootloader on the Verizon version, and it's a no-go.

Using my G4 Plus on Verizon -- observations -- comments on HD Voice

This is my first time back in the world of Android use (as a daily driver) since 2013. I used to be a custom ROM-aholic, but now I just appreciate Android for what it is a mature OS that offers more flexibility than IOS. I wanted to buy a phone outright. And although they have more minuses than other carriers, I wanted to stay with Verizon.
I don't play games on my phone. The only time I ever found it to be choppy was when I used an app, albeit one that is actively updated, that did not play well with my phone. Headset Button Controller either doesn't seem to work with 6.0 or has issues with Moto phones. . It always did a nice job of playing non-google audio apps when then screen was locked. My all-time indespensible Android app is Dogg Catcher (yes, I am podcast nerd). I started having weird freezes on my G4 Plus when using the Headset BC app, especially when unlocking. Once I removed the app, the problems seemed to go away. Setting Dogg Catcher to stay alive seems to fix my problem.
One issue I have is with the VoLTE or what Verizon calls Advanced calling (a subset of a feature Verizon calls HD voice). Apparently, the phone supports VoLTE out of the box. I looked into the chipset specs. However, it seems that Verizon uses a non-standard implementation of HD Voice. Is that correct? I do not see Advanced Calling in my settings menu. I decided to try an ATT sim for kicks. I was able to get LTE (I live in an area with a strong ATT LTE signal). However when I went to make calls -- my phone dropped down to "H" -- 3G -- allowing calls and data. Yes, I know that ATT offers 3G calling / data simultaneously and verizon doesn't.
I talked to two senior level verizon technical service reps this week. Both essentially told me that every carrier implements HD Voice a little differently. The XT1644 phone registers in Verizon's database however, they are not showing that it supports HD Voice. I tried to explain to them that unlocked phones like the Moto X Pure, Nexus 5, and this one -- will not support the fullness of HD Voice, but can set to allow advanced calling. They told me that this wasn't available on their system yet for this model.
For some of you non-US G4 / G4 Plus users -- have you gotten VoLTE working yet? Will it really take a collaboration between Moto and major carriers as I was told?
I have Verizon. The phone supports and does indeed work on Verizon VoLTE. Settings > More > Cellular Networks > Enhanced 4G LTE Mode. Should be on by default. Works fine for me, allows me to call and use data over LTE at the same time.
AT&T does not support VoLTE on non-AT&T phones, so your calls will always fall back to 2G/3G.
At this time, yes VoLTE does depend on a collaboration between the carrier and the OEM. Hopefully that doesn't remain the case.

It was a huge fiasco for me with Verizon this week. One CSR told me that I needed a new SIM to get this feature. Local corporate Verizon store would not give me a sim because I was not adding a feature to my account and I wasn't buying anything. I end up talking to two senior level TSR representatives. One didn't really want to help me. The other one said she would submit a request to the "DSM" ( I may be spelling it wrong) department to have this feature turned on. She was supposed to call me back Friday and did not.
I am not wanting this for kicks, I can use this feature in my work. I tried the feature in Settings >> More >> and it does not show up.
Previously, I was using the 2015 (prepay) Moto E on my post pay account. That phone does not support voLTE. I am using the same SIM now. Verizon would not give me a SIM at _____ corp. store. I may go to another corp store if it will make a difference. Also, I cannot add HD voice / advanced calling online in My Verizon for this line.

I will also add that for being treated so rudely this week, Verizon did give me a $100 bill credit, but I still have not resolve the issue at the heart of my frustration.

As of Thursday morning -- I was not able to add the feature HD Voice to my account. Today I am. Problem solved. Phew!!!

I really wanted to US pre-order the G4 Plus 64 GB version and wanted to grab one on release day. I'm seeing way to many issues on connectivity, especially new customers. Verizon and AT&T would be new accounts for me. The issue of only a corporate store can hook up the phone with the rep placing the sim into a demo phone and things might work in a day or so by Moto rep on their main forum. For a $300 phone and a new service, case, screen protector that are all musts. They need to get their issues fixed. It wasn't a surprise this phone was coming out. I've been dealing with a junk no service at home scenario for 4 weeks now waiting on the G4 Plus. I work 12 hour shifts 3rd shift and I can't really find time to drive around back and forth and hope and pray a rep can do some twists and turns with a sim sadly

This is an issue with Verizon, not with the phone. There isn't much Motorola can do about it besides get mad at Verizon.
There aren't any connectivity issues, the issue is rather with Verizon activating a new SIM card in the device. The workaround is not restricted to corporate stores, but corporate stores do give SIMs for free, while 3rd party authorized retailers make you pay for SIMs. If you're signing up for new service anyway, there's no need to drive around back and forth, just do it all in one go.

I know the whole situation and all the options as you basically just re-worded what I said in a few sentences. I've been on the official Moto forums. Not everybody has a working g4 or g4 plus phone right now. It doesn't matter if the phone working on Verizon is a Motorola issure or a Verizon issue. You still can't order a phone and pop in a sim card with a new account and have a working phone. I haven't had to go to a cell phone store to get a phone working in 9 or 10 years maybe longer. Even from memory when the Samsung Blackjack, Moto Razr and 09 IPhone (3g or 3gs can't remember) was plug and play. 2016 buying a phone and having issues from day 1 can't be tolerated from me or anyone else. All these manufacturers, companies, etc are getting clumsy and lazy. Especially the last 2 years. There was a time you could buy a phone and it have no bugs whatsoever. I've owned many phones like this. Maybe 6-12 months issues start to happen. Everything is rushed, From planning to parts to google OS to the manufacturer to the provider. Something seems to always be incomplete. Like lets release 5.0 with a whole bunch of issues so we can get some money rolling in and just release a update when we can. Connectivity issue to me is the phone not connected. Doesn't matter if its a full moon the cause of it. I can't go to Sprint or T-Mobile because the service at home/work is minimal. Verizon is the king in my city and at&t second but at&t pre-paid doesn't have options like there post paid (wifi calling, volte, etc)

Not everybody has a working g4 or g4 plus phone right now. It doesn't matter if the phone working on Verizon is a Motorola issure or a Verizon issue. Even from memory when the Samsung Blackjack, Moto Razr and 09 IPhone (3g or 3gs can't remember) was plug and play. 2016 buying a phone and having issues from day 1 can't be tolerated from me or anyone else. All these manufacturers, companies, etc are getting clumsy and lazy. Especially the last 2 years. There was a time you could buy a phone and it have no bugs whatsoever. I've owned many phones like this. Maybe 6-12 months issues start to happen. Everything is rushed, From planning to parts to google OS to the manufacturer to the provider. Something seems to always be incomplete. Like lets release 5.0 with a whole bunch of issues so we can get some money rolling in and just release a update when we can. The issue is not with Motorola, it's totally and completely an issue with Verizon's system. This issue affects any non-approved phone you bring to Verizon, not just the G4. You should really direct your complaints to Verizon, post on Verizon forums, etc. Motorola can't do anything about it, as they do not have access to Verizon's activation system.

Does the mobile hotspot work out the box for folks with unlimited data or does it require rooting to disable the carrier check?

I have a UDP, hotspot worked out of the box.
One last question, does data and voice work at the same time? It does with my moto pure, but not my nexus 5x.

Yes, it supports Verizon VoLTE (which enables simultaneous voice and data over LTE).
How was the problem solved? Having the similar issues.

(verizon) N915V Version of note edge. Does it have svlte? Simultaneous Voice and LTE

I don't want this confused with VoLTE which is the wifi advanced calling I believe. Does the note edge (verizon version n915v) support being able to surf online while in a phone call without being connected to wifi. Say for example something that happens to me a LOT is I'm away from my house at the store and I get a call from my grandmother and she wants me to google the local pizza hut phone number. On my old Galaxy s5 I was able to tell her to hold and get on google and search for the phone number and read it off to her. This comes in extra handy as she does not know how to use texting and I can't just text the number to her. Granted I could google it then call her back and open up the browser again without internet. But it's just so much more convenient to do it all in one step. But yeah is this possible with the verizon note edge? I just ordered mine today so too late to back out now. But just want to know what to expect.
I wish I could say it does but this does not work on mine. It specifically says it cannot use data while on a phone call
