Those cancelling HOX preorders, what makes you think the S3 BL won't be locked? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I've seen a few people say they are cancelling their HOX preorders and getting the S3 over this whole BL issue. I am just curious if people think it will be a different story with the S3. To me, it seems that AT&T is behind the lock and I assume they would just as quickly lock down the S3. What do you guys think?

I think it'll be just like vivid..it will be unlockable in around month..I hope lol either way I'm keeping mine it's beautiful!

Samsung dosent lock their bootloaders.

Samsung has generally been rather good at unlocking... Or just not properly.securing BL.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification. I have been using my Samsung Captivate which was always easy to do whatever with. I just thought that it came from a different point in Android BL openness history

Would just like to add that the BL lock does suck, but this is by far the best stock experience I have ever had on any mobile device. That also includes iOS.

I agree. HTC has done a bang up job, but dammit I want Stock ICS

I think Samsung has a lot more pull with the carriers too. The Galaxy SIII was the most hyped phone in a long time... I don't think AT&T would just turn down the Galaxy SIII cause Samsung wants the boot loader unlocked.

I doubt SGS3 will be locked. But still Im not mad about HTC's Bootloader lock since it works so well out the box (like the Vivid after ICS) as long as it works well, im happy. Honestly im not in a hurry to root since i wouldnt know what to do except mess around since i dont think i need anything improved as of today (except wifi bug, but htc should fix soon)

My biggest thing is tethering, since I would have to give up my grandfathered unlimited data plan to get it with root.

The only thing I would be looking forward to would be a debloated stock ROM. I am loving this stock experience. Oh and also for occasional wifi tethering.

I actually just bought this phone from the AT&T store today.. switched from a Galaxy S2, rooted with CM7.2.
The stock experience on this phone is.. amazing, to say the least. The display alone is just crazy. It feels like I'm looking at a photo, or one of those stickers on the phones you can't actually mess with in stores.
While it sucks not being able to root + drop a custom ROM on here.. I'm willing to wait until it eventually happens. The out of box experience is head and shoulders above any other Android phone I've used (Nexus One, Galaxy S2, Droid Incredible). If it never gets unlocked.. well, I'll still be happy with my purchase.

There are alot of non-root tethering apps. Koush's works great.
Disclaimer: I have not tried it with the One X yet, but it worked on my old Droid X fine.

Developer Edition Verizon GSIII with Unlockable Bootloader

Like the title states, Samsung will be releasing a Verizon Developer Edition GSIII with Unlockable Bootloader. Thoughts? Comments? Curse words?
I mainly want to know, will this impact our data plan if we purchase this product.

This pisses me off even more than the bootloader being locked in the first place. Not only would I have to sell my normal S3, I'd have to wait for one of the developer ones, most likely with a tiny stock, to ship to me. I don't know how Samsung could possibly think this is a valid solution after the majority of people who want to hack their phone bought it when it came out.

I want to know how soon it will be available. I would gladly sell my new S3 on Ebay to buy an unlocked one.
Any chance this could help people on here unlock the bootloader on the VZW S3?
I'm also slightly skeptical of this. I don't see this anywhere else but on some blogs. I can't find anything official from Samsung.
Hmm, according to CNet, Samsung sent this out as an email. That could be why there's no official release.
I also don't see that you can currently buy anything from http://developer.samsung.com
Ahh, verified https://twitter.com/SamsungJohn/status/222832375422402560
What a pile of steaming ****.
**** you, Verizon.
it should be noted guys that hardware wise its prolly gunna be the same.. ergo flashing the low level partitions will prolly "convert" ya
im just saying that based on speculation..
When?!
That's the question I have.
Also, will it have all the vzw junk and the annoying notification spam?

This is the most annoying frustrating thing. Do I return the phone before the 14 days are up now? I don't really want to spend double on the exact same phone... F u Verizon.
This could be good news for us. Looks like Samsung is getting some heat from us. I say keep the calls to Samsung going and also the facebook comments going. I keep telling that I'm returning because of this. They don't want to hear this..... Keep going guys...

This is absolutely disgusting.
I don't know why people support this, or why people are assuming we'll magically be able to flash the developer firmware/bootloader to our standard Verizon Galaxy S3s.
Haven't read into it yet but is this version only available unsubsidized? Or can it be purchased at a subsidized price if I haven't upgraded yet?

i would imagine that shot is at me, like i said just guessing i dont see any reason why not.
using something like dd to write every single partition to another device and basically "clone it" would then bypass the checks for certain software.

No, that wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular- I was more referring to the tons of support the model was getting in the IRC channel.
I don't understand it, because I seriously doubt it will help.
It's possible, but I'm really doubting it.
Regardless, unless it does prove as a method for allowing consumer-level devices to be unlocked, it is practically useless to almost all Galaxy S3 owners on Verizon.
I'm not bashing anyone, I'm just disgusted Samsung and/or Verizon would think this is an okay alternative.
Also, how about all that "unlocked devices will hurt the network" stuff from Verizon? I believe there's a bit of a contradiction here.
Edit: Just restating, no hard feelings towards you, shabbypenguin, or anyone else, it just blows my mind Samsung and Verizon would pull this.

You'll be buying directly from Samsung so there will be no subsidy. You'd have to sell your Verizon-bought phone and use the cash for this if you want to do it on the cheap.
So basically the phone doesn't come with a warranty why offer warranty on a phone that people want to hack Verizon u piss me off I'm on sprint and I probably hate Verizon for doing this just as much as u guys

Well this will make my wife happy. As soon as the developer version is available I'm going to get it and give the locked GS3 I just got today to my wife.
One question though, assuming the locked version can be unlocked, does that mean development for both devices will be the same? Or is it possible that they will have to have separate development?

Haha! On a serious note, are you going to purchase this Developer Edition GSIII? I read the original article as I was waiting in line at Fed Ex to pick up my GSIII. I am seriously thinking of returning my GSIII and getting this.

I am Jealous of all of development for the international sgs3

I have already had the AT&T sgs3 but returned it because the user base is no were need Verizon's user base so I figured that we would ultimately have more roms kernels and themes. I am hoping that will still be the case. Either way I do not regret my decision because AT&T Lte is so tiny in comparison to Verizon lte when it comes to coverage.
Anyways back to the point of my thread.. the development for the international version of both the sgs2 and the sgs3 has always blown me away with the vast number of different roms, themes, and kernels! If anyone has every taken a peak over in the i9300 Dev forums they will know what I am talking about. Whenever I browse over there I find myself in a state of pure jealousy. The best of the best can be found there from roms like OMEGA to kernels like syliah kernel. I wish there was a way to easily port the international roms etc like entropy did for the AT&T sgs2 when he created the hellraiser packages which essentially swapped out the incompatible parts of a rom and replaced them with the compatible libs, modems etc that were meant for the AT&T sgs2. It would be nice if we could find with way to make it happen with our Verizon sgs3, not sure if that is possible though. Cross my fingers for this and definitely for an unlocked bootloader

We'd have more development if Verizon cared about their customers more than their money.

Unfortunately we will never see nearly as much development as we would if we had an unlocked bootloader.
I am fairly confident that the developers around here will conquer this and we will have an unlocked boot locker before too long.

It doesn't even matter that the BL is locked we already have a"Work around" and can do anything an unlocked phone can do we just have a few extra steps.
They have more development because it is... Verizon in the US alone vs the rest of the world..
I'm not surprised that they have more development at all
I myself have just started dev on this phone with nothing released as of yet. It will come soon. I have friends in the same boat. Just be patient. Roms will start coming in heards now that there is a workaround.

I'm not sure why it is such a "big deal" exactly. What we have basically gives us the abilities of an unlocked bootloader (not 100% but exactly what we need development-wise) and all we have to deal with is a few short reboots on bootup. I'd say this is just fine even if we never get a true unlock.

Having a locked bootloader is still very much a big deal. It slows development if anything and reduces the possibility of seeing ROMs other than stock TouchWiz because developers who don't like TW have to go through the trouble of learning how to correctly make a boot.img that is compatible with kexec or else face the consequences. I just learned this the hard way by hard bricking my phone while trying to build a working boot.img for Sense 4.0.
Trust me, we want an unlocked bootloader...
I think we have a smaller user base because of the costs associated with Verizon. Let's face it, we all know Verizon is hell of expensive. We pay the highest price for one reason, the 4G is blazing fast and we always have a good signal.
Good bye HTC Rezound, hello Galaxy S3!

So if you return your gs4 due to the locked bootloader..

I mean I myself will wait until the last day to return it, and hope the bootloader issue has been solved. But what a shame, this device is nice. To hear the htc one already has cm10 is kinda of disappointing. So the question I ask what device will you get instead? Is it even worth it to get the international gs4 version?
I'm sticking with the GS4. I can live with the Disable option for now.
Also, I'm coming from a GSM Galaxy Nexus, so I'm already familiar with Samsung's hardware.

Time does not always mean a better ROM. Different developers pump out different stuff and once the bootloader is unlocked, the excitement will steamroll over to the GS4 development side. Guaranteed the GS4 has better custom roms at the end of the year :fingers-crossed:

If you have faith in what our awesome developers say, you should be as skeptical as they are about getting the bootloader unlocked. djrbliss tweeted yesterday that he doesn't think the bootloader can be cracked without a leak from Samsung. A few days ago, Entropy pointed out that since the S3, Samsung devices have gotten harder to crack, and they seem to be learning from their past mistakes and stepping up their bootloader security.
Still, AdamOutler is working on getting it unlocked, which is encouraging.
My point is, people shouldn't get their hopes up. If the bootloader is cracked(and I sincerely hope it happens), then great. But if it isn't, and you can't live without custom roms, then the AT&T S4 isn't the phone for you.

It will all depend It is way to early to say which one will have better devs and roms but I do know a lot of good devs have picked up the HTC One and that mixed with the international version having the same hardware as AT&T will be HUGE! I think the big question will be with the HTC One camera on a CM build. if they can't get the drivers for the camera it may just be a 4 MP? Who knows. But Mr. Cyanogen himself has the One and other great devs. I hope for a quick unlock

Cool! Thanks for the informative post..
I am not really following any of this as I don't have any interest in custom ROM's.
I have not even rooted yet but may do so once we have a way to restore back to factory. I'm pretty simple these days (I was a chronic flasher in years past) but now I only consider root if I want to use Titanium and AdFree..
I know a lot of users want custom ROM's though so hopefully the bootloader can and will be cracked.

As for the bootloader, the biggest problem is the number of potential developers. I'm not buying the device (full price) and a jtag just to test. And the fact that they're using an open source system is not encouraging..But let's see what happens! It does reaffirm my distain for ATT though.

No, AT&T will not notice. They don't make their money from device sales; they make their money from monthly bills. So, all those who returned their S4's for One's and didn't switch to a different carrier won't even get AT&T's attention.

Agreed, I would LOVE to know if we will get root on the Ultra and Maxx before I buy one of them!
I really hope someone works on root, I would love to get this phone but I need wireless tethering!
Root will end up coming. I believe the verizon moto x will be the same root method.
Unlocked, thats the million dollar question.
I'd like to know if anyone is working on it as well...
I don't necessarily need to be able to do ROMs, but I'd like to get root to see if I can get the AOSP browser on this damn thing. I need the bookmark syncing with Chrome on my PC, but the Chrome app just blows. AOSP browser works perfectly.
I, too, assume it'll be a similar root process as the Moto X since they're almost completely identical. But the SW on the Moto X is even less modified than on our Droids, so that small difference might be part of a significant difference when it comes down to rooting. So far it looks as if you've got to unlock the bootloader of the Moto X via the moto dev site, then flash a rooted kernel. That won't translate to the Ultra because of the different kernel :/
I'm giving it the two weeks that the return policy is for root to arrive. If it isn't available by then I'll eat the $35 restock fee and get myself a 32GB S4 (and go through all the trouble again of transferring phones...). Tethering is far too important to be potentially stuck without it.

Motorola doesn't offer a bootloader unlock for this phone, so we can't go that route yet. It will have to be a real exploit with temp root if /system modifications can't survive reboots.

Right now you have very, very little chance of getting a root. And about a bootloader unlock. I would more than likely guess that was a one time deal. So if you bought this and are waiting for a root/bootloader unlock. You are going to be disappointed.
I'm sure root will find its way. The unlocked boot loader makes me nervous though. I'm curious if something like safestrap will make its way to these phones. I'm still hoping that the combined attention of the four devices and the popularity of the moto x will get these devices an unlocked boot loader.

Ignore the prompt to update for now, no matter how annoying it might be. Like someone else said, with so many devices sharing common architecture root is just a matter of time. Bootloaders are a different story.

it's hard to tell.
I have the s4 which I will dump soon, as I am about 99% sure unlock is not coming.
I am keeping my s3 though.
I also have the HTC One, I DO feel we will get unlock at the least, and hopefully S-OFF.
I usually give all my phones at least 6 months before moving on.
Thinking of going to buy the moto x just for kicks as I never own moto device and the X peeks my interest, I feel I could use it and toss it around and not have to worry about it and it can take it, compared to my HTC one that's like a watch (jewelery.)
Curious to play with the different software, HTC Sense is and always has been favorite, Touchwiz grew on me greatly, and want to check out this moto x. /I usually can't live without root, but I wouldn't be using the phone activated, just to have it.
i'm sure Root will be re shortly .
Hope in @djrbliss for root and bootloader exploit , he has hacked Razr HD bootloader here

I hope it does come but this phone will just be my backup phone for when I'm giving my S4 a breather, I took care of my S4 before that software update thankfully.

I'm sure root will find its way. The unlocked boot loader makes me nervous though. I'm curious if something like safestrap will make its way to these phones. I'm still hoping that the combined attention of the four devices and the popularity of the moto x will get these devices an unlocked boot loader.

Why are you so sure? There are a handful of people who have the ability to do root for this device, and afaik none of them "NONE" of them have expressed an interest to work on this.

Ignore the prompt to update for now, no matter how annoying it might be. Like someone else said, with so many devices sharing common architecture root is just a matter of time. Bootloaders are a different story.

there isnt any known exploits to patch so how would an update patch them?

There very well may be, but moto is not going to make that public in most cases. It's easier to patch in silence and not tip anyone off.

I have the s4 which I will dump soon, as I am about 99% sure unlock is not coming.
I am keeping my s3 though.
I also have the HTC One, I DO feel we will get unlock at the least, and hopefully S-OFF.

Yeah the main thing keeping me holding onto this S4 is the fact it has MDK. Otherwise I generally am liking the One better now - though the S4 camera sure can take some great shots and tends to last a bit longer on the battery. The Maxx is pretty awesome... camera is mediocre, but better once you get used to its idiosyncrasies. It's basically pure Android, so if you love sense, you might be bored with it. But if there's any phone that hiccups less than the One, it's this one. Incredibly smooth and snappy experience. And obviously great battery life... Voice controls are pretty cool, too. Not perfect, but still pretty cool

Why is this forum for Verizon gs5 slow?

Why is this forum for Verizon gs5 slow? Is the phone not that popular for some reason?

Because, thus far, Verizon has made development a royal PITA. Plus, its still pretty early. Simple as that.
Yeah its only been a week, I too am surprised by this but even with no root it should be picking up users within a few weeks.
No root would mean much smaller traffic here. Then you have rubes like me waiting (perhaps futilely) for a 32gb model who will stick with their S4 until one is offered.
Just wait men,
I feel like going back to my m7 or picking up an m8 until development picks up here.

not hopeful. unless there is a leak from inside samsung.
look at the note 3. its pretty dead from an AOSP perspective. and even TW based roms, nobody can apply future kernel upgrades so its a dead end route.
at this point anyone who wants anything custom from their phones should probably not look at samsung devices.
Hopefully when the dev version is released this picks up more.
I'm at a crossroads right now... My S3 smashed 2 weeks ago so I picked up a M8 because there was no release date for the S5 yet. I have since ordered the S5 and planned on returning the M8 (very nice phone by the way but not super impressed with the camera). Flipping a coin and keeping the S5 hoping for root, etc. or keeping the M8 and root immediately.... merrrrrrrrrrrr

I'd have to vote M8. I've had mine since release day and it's S-Off and running Viper. I'm really liking the M8, camera and all. I got the S5 yesterday and I messed with it all last night and today, so far my impression is "Meh... really?" Not loving the S5 yet.

I felt the same way as you but didn't want to wait. Keep an eye on slickdeals for a fast 64gb micro sd. The new fast ones (I got the Samsung Plus 64gb) and honestly you can really notice the read write time performance. I'm never waiting for apps/pics/vids to load from my micro sd on this phone. It's just like internal memory. I directly compared this with my slightly older sandisk 64gb micro from last year and it's night and day. I got it for $32 on a deal but it's $46 now on amazon. It won't let me post external links since I'm new.
Totally worth being an early adopter. Order your 16GB S5 with that card and don't look back. If you need a ton of space down the road, get a fast 128gb micro sd when it launches.
Might be blabbering here.. but you can't discount the speed of sd cards. You can't think of it like 48mb/s, but more like 10mb/.2 seconds. This little bursts are what your apps and other things need to boot quickly.
I got the S3 the day it come out on Verizon. There were issues with a locked bootloader and what-not with that. It was just a matter of time until you could unlock it with a simple app install.
I do like my S5 as it is. I do hope with time there'll be work arounds for what Verizon had put in place.

You are obviously not acquainted with changes made since the S3. Take a look at the S4 forums, the only way you can unlock the bootloader is if your phone came with a specific firmware and you did not do any OTA updates to change it. This is because of a specific exploit found in that version, which Samsung/Verizon quickly patched and the phone has been locked down ever since. Sure, it's possible that an exploit will be found in the VZW S5 but it won't be something simple as downloading an app and clicking "Unlock". And you can believe as soon as it's public, it will get patched with an OTA.

I vividly remember this as well. It's only a matter of time before root or bootloader unlock is achieved. Some developer out there will want to come to the rescue. I know several that love playing hero
Follow Me @Bash_array
Not very conducive to development
Don't buy locked down devices if you want quick development
