[Q] New Skyrocket No data? SIM card issue? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I just purchased a brand new Galaxy S II Skyrocket (AT&T) online (not from AT&T directly), the phone is amazing. But I can not get a data connection on the phone. Wifi works fine, and I can make and receive calls and send and receive sms but no data connection at all.
My previous phone an HTC hero (was a version from canada I think for Rogers) works fine and has for years. I just took the sim from that phone popped it into the new skyrocket expecting all to be well, but no dice, no data connection on the new skyrocket.
My first guess was that I needed to change some settings on the phone, I seem to recall needing to do that on the Hero when I first got it years back. After searching around though there dont seem to be any settings to change that would make a differance. Maybe I only needed to change something beacuse the old phone wasnt actually AT&T but Rogers? I'm not sure.
My second thought was maybe the newer phones use a newer type of sim card. I think I've had my current sim card through at least 3 phones. It says 3G on it but I may have had it before my Hero, and the HTC Tilt before that, and even with my old motarola flip phone from way back.
I took it into Best Buy to ask them about the sim cards and the guy there told me the ones they use look just like the one I have (still say 3G on them).
I am trying to avoid going directly to AT&T with this as I have a very old plan that I was transfered into back when it was Cingular wireless, and I am hoping and praying that I dont need to get transfered into some other plan. I know my current plan has a data package it has been working on my old HTC tilt, followed by my HTC Hero fine for years and years now. Unless there is some distinction between my data plan and some new data plan required for new phones?
I am at my wits end and really hope I didnt waste 500 bucks on this amazing phone any suggestions any of you might have would be very very very appreciated.

You need to call att and tell them that you have a skyrocket now. You can keep your current plan, you just gotta let them know you have that phone. No biggie at all. A new sim card may be necessary as well. Which can be picked up at your local store. You'll be fine. And enjoy your new skyrocket.

I'm pretty sure att makes you buy an lte plan if you have an lte phone. Kinda wack, but I think its true.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App

They may change it to and LTE plan, but im positive he can keep all the features of his old plan. If you still have unlimited data from back in the day you can keep it. Beware of the throttle though.
Sent from my pocket rocket

Yes you get to keep all your features and plan they just change it to a lte package don't do like me and do it on the phone just to find out I had to go get a new lte Sim card and to find out that the ****hook on the phone that acted like he knew what he was doing when I said "look buddy I got the unlimited data plan I don't wanna mess it up" and he gives me the "oh no i'm not touching that sir" only to find out I had to go to the store and get a new Sim card and low and behold he did change my unlimited data plan also. Cause he was a moron
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App

You need a lte sim card. A friend of mines had a similar problem, he
just went directly to a att store and they gave him a new sim.
You should be able to keep your current plan.

Have you tried changing your APN settings?

I have not yet I did come across some other posts else where that mentioned changing APN settings but I dont see those options in the phone any where, not like my old HTC hero.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions I guess I will just have to brave going to the AT&T store and pray things work out.

It will man they will just make you a lte Sim card should do it for free

Try this:
Go to: Menu>settings>wireless and network>mobile networks> access point names
Create new apn for internet
Name: HSPA+ ATT
APN: Phone
APN Type: Internet
and also for mms
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
proxy: wireless.cingular.com
mms proxy: wireless.cingular.com
mms port: 80
mcc: 310
mnc: 410
apn type: mms
you can also try the LTE apn
name: att pta
apn: pta
mmsc: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
mms proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
mms port: 80
mcc:310

apn type: internet+mms+supl

He needs a new sim card. Simple as that...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

I had the same problem when I went into Best Buy to get my Skyrocket. The mobile data would not work no matter what the idiot employees tried. They used my old SIM card even though I said I was pretty sure the Skyrocket needed a new one.
I finally got a little upset and took the phone to the AT&T store. The guy that helped me was pretty cool and gave me a new SIM card. Mobile data started working right away lol

Stopped by AT&T and ..well unfortunetly that couldn't have gone much worse...
I was told my current plan "has unlimited data, but you don't have a data plan so you can't use that phone"
So now I'm going to get stuck with another $70 a month on top of what I was already paying, to have less minutes and less data than I did before...
On top of that, there was something odd on my account or something and they couldn't just add a $30 data plan to it, they couldnt even cancel it and start new. So now I am waiting for someone from customer service to call me "maybe this week" so they can fix what ever it is so they can finish taking more of my money.... *sigh*
o well thanks for the help everyone anyway it was worth a shot.

Something sounds fishy about that
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

Yeah man sounds like you are fixing to get bent over. Did you have a "unlimited smartphone data plan"?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App

I'd definitely have to agree with the two above me. If you had the original unlimited data plan, it WILL grandfather over into the LTE plans. Sounds like they're trying to jank you into paying for a completely new, added line, but leaving the data plan you already had before on there. Therefore, technically paying for TWO lines. If the rep seriously couldn't get rid of something that was on your plan before, he seriously doesn't know what he's doing and just tried a manual workaround that would work. You'd be amazed how easy it is to change/add/remove things to your plan in their system.

Basically. That at&t rep is just trying to **** you over. You should be able to
use your current plan on this device. All that's needed is a new sim. Nothing more,
nothing less.

lyndone58's solution worked for me. I typed in his first suggested APN and now I have 4G. No trip to the at&t store necessary. I just took the mini sim card out of my iphone, cut up a credit card and stuck the mini sim in the middle of it and stuck it in my skyrocket. No new sim card necessary. All is well with this fix. Thanks.

1st. There is NO such thing as an LTE sim card. Its just APN settings done OTA by AT&T. I know of people with the old 64k Cingular cards in LTE phones.
But this sounds like an sim card issue. One of my 3 skyrockets on my family plan has had this issue and we finally changed his sim card and working.

Mytouch unlocked phone ATT sim

I have an unlocked MYTOUCH phone.. When i put my ATT sim card with an IPHONE data plan in there, i cannot surf.
Will only tmobile data plans work?
Tmobile uses different frequencies for 3G (1700/2100Mhz) but you should be able to use the edge/gprs network since they use the same bands, you might also need to the add the right APN settings for the ATT network
You don't need to use an iPhone data plan, you are going to use medianet on your mytouch, so you need to use medianet settings. Please note those settings different from the iPhone settings and you will get huge charges with an iPhone plan. I have the $10 medianet unlimited package with my phone. Also this should be in the general section not android development.
It is true that you can't get to the 3g networks because ATT runs off a different frequency than tmobile but you can get the Edge networks. To do this however you have to change some settings. You have to go to settings and then wireless controls. Then there should be a Mobile Network Settings option then go down to Access Point Names. Then you click the menu button and click New APN. Then fill in this information.. for the MCC and MNC don't put stars look up your country code.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_network_code
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:[email protected]
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:***
MNC:***
APN Type: leave blank
now you should be able to connect to the edge networks and be able to surf the web.
Okay, I already have an IPHONE data plan on my SIM card which is why i was trying that, but nothing worked... so I want unlimited internet, so which ATT plan will work for the MYTOUCH?
and s2pdpyro, thanks for that detailed info!!! Works on EDGE... so no way to use ATT 3g
Sell it and buy a Rogers Magic phone from Canada, which works on ATT 3G.
wow so thats my option...
Easiest method is to set the APN settings yourself.
You can also load a custom rom which is auto configured.
You will not get 3G but you can get Edge, otherwise go with a Rogers Magic...mine is working fine on AT&T 3G.
yeah definitely go for the Rogers its worth it, edge is unacceptable in 2009.
SO true

That is so true. Thats why I have the Rogers Magic. Tmobile had no 3G in my area for a while.
ok, so let me ask you this... i will exchange it for a rogers phone.. so now i can use it on my ATT account 3g.. However, which plan do I get and how much is it monthly?
anyone know?
I have worked for both of the companies of said phone/plan. They are different networks. I suggest using the medianet plan on the myt3g, OR see if you can trade your mt3g for a Rogers Magic.
Or, the option I am going to wait for (seeing how I have T-Mobile currently) is to buy the new NexusOne when it's available.
no, but what i mean is are there any data plans less than $30/mo unlimited for 3g on att?
Pick a voice plan (cheapest is 39.99/m), add unlimited data 15$/m. Thats the cheapest option on ATT.
Dont tell them you have a mytouch/rogers phone, just ask for a sim card on its own.
If you can get a family member on board, you can get unlimited data knocked down to 10$/month.
Merry Xmas.
Ok but will that unlimited data for $15/mo be 3G or EDGE?
Merry Christmas to you too!

Your MyTouch runs on 1700mhz spectrum while ATT runs 3g on 850mhz. So you'll be running on EDGE not 3G.
Then why am I being told to get a ROGERS/MYTOUCH so I can utilize 3G???
I am so confused.... Now you are saying i can only use EDGE..
Please someone clear this up.. phones cost over $400... i dont want to buy it and be stuck on EDGE..
anyone????

/sigh.... If you get a Rogers Version of the Mytouch (which is called Magic) you will be able to use 3g services. On top of that Rogers Magic has a different amount of Ram vs. MyTouch. You will be flashing 32A roms instead of 32B roms. If you feel you are confident enough to flash the Radio and SPL then you will be able to use 32B roms instead of 32A roms. Searching Google does help as well fyi.

regarding data plan from t-mobile USA

hi there, if i set up data plan using a phone that required data plan for 10 bucks from t-mobile USA, (says, a nokia nuron) Can I switch to another smartphone that I brought somewhere else (says, HTC HD2) and still be able to use that 10 bucks data plan on the HD2 and not using the expensive 30 bucks plan? I already tried putting on sim card into the HD2, and on my T-mobile page, my phone status is still show that i am using the nuron. do I have a chance to keep the 10 bucks plan if I change phone to HD2?
PS:
OK, I just called up t-moible USA to add data plan to my bill. she said the 10 bucks data plan isn't available anymore and all i can add is the $15 for 200MB or $30 for unlimited. of course I said NO and asked her to transfer me to a consumer loyalty dept. From there, I told the rep that i am using a Nokia Nuron that I got from signing a contract w/ them and let me add the $10 data plan to my bill.
So now, i have to wait for couple of hours before i can access the data plan. I think i will change phone back to the Nuron and see if the data works then change back to my hd2 and see if it's working also. I HOPE TODAY IS MY LUCKY DAY!!!!
edit: OK, I just got access to the web with the web2go data on my HD2 (android)
now, i have 3 different icon on the data, H, 3G, and E...iH>3G>E in speed wise right? and if i have both wifi and data turn on, does that mean, wifi will always be used first if there is wifi connection?
I don't think so..... Sadly im sure you will have to get the 30 dollars web I tried doing that on a nokia and it didnt work.

Hi there. I had signed up w the tmobile web2go $10 access initially when using and unlocked nokia 5800 and then got a hold of an unlocked Samsung captivate and have been accessing the internet fine for a few months now. All of a sudden the internet is no longer working and just goes to the web2go "need subscription" page. I called t-mobile and supposedly the "system" is able to see what kind of phone I have and they have "corrected" the ability for you to use a smart phone w the $10 plan. They now are saying I'm required to upgrade my data to the 200mb a mo for $15 a mo or unlimited for $30 in order for the internet to work at all. Why is it that all the reps I've talked to in the past has always had to ask which phone I'm using when the system can see it? Is this truly a "correction" or is this rep just trying to shaft me and not help me?-

Try changing the APN settings ... epc.tmobile.com is now the default connection for devices while all the other APNS like wap.voicestream.com from tmoblie still work but arent being used by tmobile
Try changing it and see what happens....
tmobile proxies don't use the epc.tmobile since its monitored and in use
And if they can really tell what phone you have.. Ima say no.. They have always asked what phone im using... Unless they just ask to see if you lie or not lol
Thanks for the reply!
Yeah.... I SERIOUSLY doubt that she could have seen what kind of phone I use based on the convo. I Told her what kind I used and had to tell Every Other Rep too... (they all thought I used a SonyEricson Equinox) but she was not a very nice lady who you can tell was one of those "had to be right" gals. So when I asked her why every other rep thought I was using the Equinox and why they all had to ask what phone I use, she made some stupid reply of them being on different "systems" (there's that magical word used for third party excuses again).
I have tried 3 different APN settings.
APN: epc.tmobile.com
MMSC: mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN: internet2.voicestream.com
MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
APN: wap.voicestream.com
MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
All were with:
APN: t-mobile
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: internet + mms
(the rest were not set)
I would set it to that... then turn it off and restart it.
I got a call back from my cell phone store gal and she also says she doubts that they can tell what kind of phone I had and also guessed that the gal was trying to get credit for upselling me to a better data plan.
She also said that if anything... NOT to use that epc apn because that is the one that they May be able to track what kind of phone you use and therefore try and upsell you with.
On all my phones that i switch to use with T-Mobile I just change the apn to wap.voicestream.com and thats it.. I don't put no MMSC or any kind of IP
As long as you have an active Data Plan on the Account it shouldn't matter what APN you use they all work.. Some are slower then others

It also seems to be affecting my ability to send out MMS.
i bet if there was a way to change the IMEI of what the hd2 shows internally, you'd prolly get it to work... don't know if there's such a way though

the my t-mobile will not change unless you manually change it. and yes, the CS can see what phone you're using and also have a list of phones you used in the past. the T-zone and web2go ($5, $5.99 or $10 plan) will not work any t-mobile branded androids except for behold2.

[Q] LTE not working on grandfathered ALLTEL plan

I currently have an unlimited data plan called Connect Pack 1 from my Alltel plan that transitioned over onto the Aria that I was given as a replacement for the Moto Q that I was using.
Anyway, when I got the Skyrocket, they tried to make me transition to an ATT data plan, but I wouldn't go for it. I bought the phone outright, expecting to at least get the 3g working, but they said they couldn't.
I used the apn settings from the aria, and I do get 4G but for whatever reason, the
LTE icon isn't showing up in the notification area. I live in Houston, and we are supposedly one of the area's with it.
The settings I used are the wap.cingular settings that I see are listed elsewhere on here. Is there something additional I need to do to get the LTE to work.
Will the phone look like an Aria to ATT or am I going to be getting a notice to upgrade my account shortly?
Thanks
You need an LTE sim and the LTE plan to be able to access the new network. Maybe see if they can change your sim and plan?
Thanks for the prompt reply
I don't want to change the plan. Right now my data plan is cheap, and I want to keep it that way.
If I get a new sim, is there a chance that the LTE will work using the settings listed on wap.cingular? If it does work, how long before you think I would start getting some notices about it from ATT?
I live in Houston too.. and I have unlimited data.. I do get the lte icon beneath the 4G.. but it looses signal when left alone for a while.(sleep). And I have a regular hspa sim card.. I will go to att today and see what I can find out...

hope you hear something positive. The Cingular settings give me stable 4G which is actually better than I expected after my discussion with the att store about getting the phone. All they seemed to be interested in was getting me to sign an att 2year contract (haven't been under contract for years) and transition to a limited data plan. Not what I wanted so I just bought the phone off craigslist and entered the apn settings myself.
All I am truly worried about is if they update the data plan themselves if they notice the 4G phone on a 3G plan. I'm hoping since my original phone and the skyrocket are both android it won't raise any flags. I would love LTE but I am pretty happy with hspa+ for now.

I also am a former alltel customer and was moved to an aria. It recently broke and I got a skyrocket whick is great, but I live in Carlsbad NM and don't get lte anyway. So today I'm going to return the skyrocket and switch back to my alltel plan(at&t already said they could dueto buyers remorse). The guys at the local at&t here gave me the same crap about the skyrocket being unusable, which as we all know is bull. I have a galaxy s II gt-I9100 internationalversion on the way. I will also try my apn settings from my aria. Thanks to everyone who actually assists people unlike corporate customer care.

Funny too cause I'm still on HSPA networks, not seeing throttle. Yet..
Anyone know if changing APNs still works if indeed I do get throttled?

I just posted this in another thread. See if it helps you......
Data Throttleing Workaround
To all my friends with T-Mobile~ if you have a smartphone & a data plan, I've discovered a workaround for the data caps on the newer 4g plans. The newer phones come with a certain APN, or access point name, pre-programmed into them, kind of like a proxy that your phone goes through to connect to the internet. This specific APN allows the company to track your data usage. What I did was change it to a different APN that they don't keep an eye on. I've been testing this trick for about 6 weeks now & it definitely works. I've been purposely gobbling data like crazy all month just to see if they catch me(I'm at my 5gb limit already), but the T-Mo website only shows that I've used about 100 megs(which was only caught because I flashed a new ROM a couple weeks ago & forgot to change the APN till the next day). EDIT: As of this posting, my monthly allotment has rolled over, and despite using data all day long for several days, the meter on T-Mobile.com is still at 0mb :}
Step 1- if you have the T-Mobile "My Account" app on your phone- DELETE IT. Freeze it if you don't wanna delete it altogether, but either way get rid of it. I've been getting reports that this trick is not working for people with this app installed, and I think it's because it's measuring your data usage on the phone & then reporting your usage back to T-Mobile regardless of what APN you use. So kill it!!!
Step 2- on your phone, go to your settings. FYI- these settings might not be EXACTLY the same on every phone, but you should have the same basic information fields as the ones here. Open up wireless & networks, then mobile networks, then access point names. You should see T-Mobile US or something like it, and the APN should be epc.tmobile.com. This is the monitored APN. Create a new APN with the following settings(Settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks>access point names>menu key>new APN):
Name: whatever you want, I named mine T-Mobile 2
APN: internet2.voicestream.com
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username: leave blank
Password: leave blank
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-Mobile.com/mms/wapenc

Authentication type: leave blank
APN type: default, supl, mms (or internet + mms, if that's the setting your phone has)
APN protocol: IPv4 (if your phone doesn't have this, don't worry)
Once you input these settings, hit menu & then tap save. Go back to the APN screen, select the new APN, and enjoy your TRULY unlimited data. This APN will bypass the data tracking while still allowing you to enjoy full 4G speeds :3
FYI I've only tested this on an Android phone, but AFAIK it should work on any 4G T-Mobile phone that allows you to change the APN settings.
And FFS, keep your big fat mouth shut about this. Don't mention it to anyone at T-Mo, we don't want this getting out so they get wise to the loophole. Some might call this stealing, but we as customers PAY for unlimited data every month and its our right to get the services we pay for. Yes, the plans clearly state that you're paying for a limited amount of 4G, but I don't think that gives them the right to knock us down to sub-2G speeds once we use up our 4G allotment. If they just bumped us back down to 3G it wouldn't be a big deal, but it's total bull**** to cripple us with near-GPRS speeds.
Oh, and P.S.- if you've already hit your limit & have ALREADY been throttled... I've never been throttled so I haven't been able to test this on a throttled phone, so I have no idea if this will work to get you back up to speed(nyuk nyuk, I got jokes) but if you do it you won't have to worry about being capped next month.

Data Throttleing Workaround
To all my friends with T-Mobile~ if you have a smartphone & a data plan, I've discovered a workaround for the data caps on the newer 4g plans. The newer phones come with a certain APN, or access point name, pre-programmed into them, kind of like a proxy that your phone goes through to connect to the internet. This specific APN allows the company to track your data usage. What I did was change it to a different APN that they don't keep an eye on. I've been testing this trick for about 6 weeks now & it definitely works. I've been purposely gobbling data like crazy all month just to see if they catch me(I'm at my 5gb limit already), but the T-Mo website only shows that I've used about 100 megs(which was only caught because I flashed a new ROM a couple weeks ago & forgot to change the APN till the next day). EDIT: As of this posting, my monthly allotment has rolled over, and despite using data all day long for several days, the meter on T-Mobile.com is still at 0mb :}
So kill it!!!

does this enhance the 4g signal and does it matter on the state and area cause im getting deadspots at my job
I don't think it's going to do much to enhance your signal. Now the 3g - 4g data speed enhancement tool at the beginning of my mirror thread might help you out tho.

Funny too cause I'm still on HSPA networks, not seeing throttle. Yet..
Anyone know if changing APNs still works if indeed I do get throttled?

WiFi calling or UMA is all I have available as T-Mobile signal at my house is non existant, but if I drive 35 miles I get strong 4G. Go figure T-Mobile having not even 2G in my area thankful there's WiFi calling

Ya know...that's the really weird thing about Tmo. And ALL of the cell companies for that matter. Just like you I can drive about 25 miles south towards Chattanooga and get a scalding 4 & 5 bars 4G! Yet I can turn north towards Knoxville and take a mile left turn over a danged hill and can't even receive a stinking PHONE CALL for the next 25 miles! It's INSANE! EVERYONE should be able to at least make a phone call almost anywhere unless they live in a cave before they start UPGRADING their damned signals for people that already have freakin' 4G! It just blows my damn MIND!
Does this work?

I haven't needed to use it in a couple of months now but the last time I tethered my tablet it got right on by That "would you like to spend $15 more dollars a month for something you already pay for" message they replaced my browser homescreen with. Of course I had to reinstall a fresh copy of my browser & everything else that it was using to get it to initially go away but I never saw it again after I did. I sure HOPE that it still works for everyone!

Avoid StraightTalk SIM.

Some of you know I have been using a pre-paid Sim Chip in my cell phone for my phone/internet service.
These past three days, my crippled data speeds have become unbearable. Time-outs caused notes to both Google Drive and Evernote to disappear into the digital ether, never to be seen or heard from again. After searching terms such as "HTC One X speeds straight talk" and "straight talk sim speeds" I began to see a pattern. People complaining of arbitrary throttling, and conflicting press releases by Tracfone Wireless and América Móvil, the parent copany of tracfone, straight talk, net10, Assure wireless, and others.
After trying the suggestions found on reputable android websites like XDA Developers and Droid FOrums I had no reliefe, and so sent an email to the corproate resolutions team at Straight talk (not the first time I've had to do this, as they tried to **** me out of at least $32 earlier this year with false advertising.)
Poor Connection Speeds
I am experiencing very poor connection speeds with my BYOP sim card. My phone is an HTC One X (ATT Version). phone number [redacted] straighttalk email registered via this account UN: [redacted]
I have set all of the APN settings to the defaults on the card and on the website.
Create a new APN with the following values:
APN Name: Straight Talk
APN: att.mvno
Proxy: http://proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
Port: 80 MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.33 MMS
Port: 80
I have also tried variations on this APN with no luck. Other solutions tried include powercycling the phone, changing the type of default data connection, cycling the "airplane mode" on and off, cycling from 2/3G to 2G and back, updating the radio stack and baseband in my phone, and connecting to and disconnecting from a wifi network. None of these solutions has made a dent in the data speeds, which makes me fairly well certain that the problem is not with my hardware's ability to recieve signal.
At best my connection speed in Ottumwa IA is 223 kbps, and often only half that. And yet people sitting right next to me with Straight Talk phones or sim cards can easily get 1000+ kbps. The phone is not an issue, it's capable of a huge variety of frequencies and standards, and many of them are offered in my area via both ATT and Tmo towers in Ottumwa, IA. This issue has also been consistent across all of my ownership time of the SIM card. If this is a "cap" as has been widey discussed in the tech press, then it should restart with my new billing period. That has not been the case, as these slow data speeds have remained fairly consistent since I purchased the card in January, including a service lapse and reactivation.
It concerns me that I have read examinations on multiple forums and in the press from knowledgable users that there is a difference between the sim card program and the straight talk branded phones, and that users of the sim program are not only throttled, but also purposely targeted for slower speed standards in general. It is seriously affecting my usage of my phone, as in the last few days, critical apps such as Evernote and Google Drive have experienced timeouts resulting in lost data.
Straight Talk has already upset me once as a company and it took my contacting consumer advocacy groups to recieve a satisfactory resolution to that issue. The fact that I still utilize the service is a show of my good faith with it, but if these performance issues cannot be addressed, I am afraid that I will have to join many others singling the company out for criticism. You'll notice the specific proxy and port called out by the APN when android 2.1 or newer can easily auto-propegate these fields. It has been determined by people more knowledgable than myself that that combination of proxy and port specifically funnels SIM users to a pre-throttled branch of the network when compared with people using branded straight-talk phones.
Dear Lawrence,
We do apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. I just checked your account on our system and found out that your data has been reduced. Furthermore, your data speed will be restored at a reduced speed 24 hours after an airtime card is added to your service end date. Should you have further questions, feel free to send us an email.
Sincerely,

TLR if you ever even once go over the undisclosed cap of 1.5 gb... your connection will be throttled to >222 kbps. PERMANENTLY.
Since all of the Tracfone services under all the different names utilize the same back end, this will likely also be true of any other smart phone on a tracfone wireless service.
Then I guess I will be telling everyone I come in contact with to steer clear of any Tracfone subsidiary, as well as once again contacting the BBB and lodging another complaint. Thank you for confirming my worst suspicions about your company. This is the second time I have been baited and switched by you folks and I will not be giving this company a third chance, regardless of any offers you make to me.

when I first signed up for the service in january, I purchased a $30 limited airtime card. when I tried to activate it, I learnd that it was "illegal" to use on the smart phone program. even though I had prior written confrimation from Straight Talk customer service that I could do just that. They then tried to keep my money for THAT card as; well as make me either eat the $14.99 I had paid for the sim card, or pay another $45 plus tax and fees for the "unlimited" card.
In fact, it's only been in the last month, after numerous complaints like mine, that they began marking on their websites and packaging that smartphones MUST use the $45 unlimited plan or higher.
So, as per my promise to this company I am passing along my experience as a warning and cautionary tale. do NOT do business with TracFone, NET10 Wireless, Straight Talk, SafeLink Wireless, Telcel América and Simple Mobile. You will be bond for nothing but tears and trouble when you need their service most and they decide you're no longer profitable enough.
Sorry to hear about all the trouble your having. I've got a BYOP StraightTalk sim too but I'm on T-Mobile's network. I've abused the heck out of my data so far but haven't noticed reduced speeds and I'm pretty sure I've gone way beyond 1.5 GB. Could this just be the case for folks on an AT&T sim?
For some reason you have just had bad service with straight talk. I've been running straight talk for the past 6 months and have never had ANY problems. One month I used about 7 gigs of data ( a rogue app) and they did throttle me for the rest of that service month to 25kbps but the minute I refilled my account the throttle was lifted and I was regularly seeing 7mbps HPSA+ again. Since then I have used 2 and 2.5 gigs and have not got any texts or calls telling me I was using too much data and I have not been throttled.
Furthermore they have advertissed that the $30 card cant be used with smartphone before last month. I knew it six month ago when I first got my sim.
And you dont even have to enter the proxy into the apn for the service to work. Been using my phone since the beginning of this year with no proxy just fine. Oh and by the way I'm extremely satisfied with the service I get. I got about a 2 dollar discount for using auto refill so for unlimited text, unlimited talk, the best coverage in the nation, and a soft limited of somewhere around 3-4 gigs of data, I would say $42.50 a month is a deal that cant be beat by ANY OTHER service provider today.
Ha, pretty funny we keep winding up in the same places. I've been with straight talk for about the same amount of time also without trouble, although slow data speeds today. Other than that I have absolutely no complaints.

sorry to hear about your troubles but I can say this least
For the past 2 to 2 and a half months I have currently been using a net10 SIM before I got my HTC One. I first jumped on the band wagon of Net10 SIM when I got Samsung Galaxy Note ( Orignal) for $200 dollars. I found the net10 sim package at my local game stop for around $15 dollars. In that package there is three SIM options : One for AT&T branded or unlocked phones; One for a T-Mobile Branded or unlocked phones; and one micro SIM for AT&T branded or unlocked phones. I paid a small fee and had my Note unlocked and used the full sized AT&T sim. Got great speeds on HSPA+ ( between 4 and 8 mbps). However when I activated the SIM on their website they notified me, albeit in the small print , that if I used an AT&T sim that at 1.5 gb of use they WOULD throttle the speed down the snail ass slow. But on the left side of the screen they announced that if the AT&T SIM users want to switch to T-Moblie service instead that they would send them a free SIM card to do so. T-Mobile blows in my town as they have no 3g ony their EDGE service which isnt worth a damn with a 4g phone. So I'm limited on the service as far as GSM is concerned . With AT&T I get the back haul 4g its not LTE but still pretty snappy. The first month my 5 year old blew threw the 1.5 gb and instead of throttling me they just cut data out completely. Then they proceed to say that if you do that and add a service card before your service end date then then it does nothing for you data speed. it has to be on or after the service end date. I waited till the day my service ended and add an "unlimited" service card. However that did nothing. It was three DAYS before I had ANY data the two more days till my speeds were on par with what they were at the begaining. So all I can say is really RESEARCH the service you want and as always learn first hand. I am currently using the micro SIM in my OneX
and so far so good. I just use wifi when and wherever I can and keep and eye on my data usage. Other than the BS at first its pretty good for what you pay.
I've personally noticed network speed decreasing with the ownership of any prepaid GMS sim card.that I've tried (h20, straight talk, simple mobile)
Straight Talk completely turned off my data. Data does not work at all, Mms doesn't work. Which is why I'm switching service providers at the end of the month. I've had no problems for about the first 2 months. Then I pay for this month's and my data is cut off. I'm not going to keep paying for something that doesn't work. My little sister has an iPhone 4 on straight talk and her data is constantly off one day then on the next.

Just to report same thing with me.. I had an HTC Vivid branded Att and also a Galaxy S3. I was duped into using the Net10 service and everything was fine until I flashed a different ROM on my girlfriends S3 and all the sudden I couldnt get any mobile data. I searched and re flashed roms and thought I wiped her radio. I felt like a noob for the weekend then finaly I tried puting the sim card from my Vivid into her phone and everything worked fine. I put her sim card in my phone and I couldnt get any data. Then I got heated because I just spent 2 days and nights messing with this phone, my girlfriend now thinks Im incompetent. and I never received any type of warning and new that I didnt use that much data.
Well that monday about noon I realized that I didnt have any data on my phone either. I called the worthless customer service to ask what the deal was and talked to a gentleman in India who after 30 mins told me that I reached my limit on data. I have an unlimited data plan that costs me 50.00 x2 a month. it was the 18th so a little over a half of a month I supposedly reached a limit that doesnt exist. I asked to buy more data with no luck.
Here is a company that offers unlimited but then says I reached my limit after about 2.5 weeks without any email or warning. They have no problem emailing me for dumb ****. Then I have no option to purchase more. I know that most people would say I just had a bad go. But I can assure you that this company doesnt want your business so dont give it to them.
Net10 Straight Talk Tracfone ALL THE SAME COMPANY
Use them if you want to but you will be throttled and possibly shut down. I had a smartphone that I couldnt use for a month. Im now with Tmobile and its not much better. I have no service in alot of areas that I frequent. Im not sure if any of them are worth a damn.

I'm going to have to change my opinion here I just paid my bill on the 1st. And on the third I was having issues sending a mms. Well knowing how much I screw with the phone I assumed it was something I did.. then I noticed when I left home and my WiFi disconnected I had no data at all... Now I'm pis**d off, call customer service after looking at my data usage.. 26mb used. I get the typical india rep that says they have no idea why. Then I ask for a supervisor and the guy says ok. I'm placed on hold only for the line to be answered by a machine telling me about high data usage.. I was like Bulls**t and called back. I get pumped to same message 4 times.. now keep in mind it's was a holiday here in the US so I had quite a few beers flowing through me. I finally called back from my wife's line and refused to give my cell number or name till I had a supervisor on the line. After tearing him a new one he reset my account and I verified I had data and at normal speeds. Then I had him give me the number to the corporate office, I called and received the message about calling back between normal business hours. I'm calling them Monday and gonna have some fun, polite but pissed attitude. I'll post the results of the call and may even record it and post that. See how it goes this time.
Only thing better than customer service is finally getting the phone number directly to the main corporate office in Florida.
I shall share

i used to be an Sprint user, i was paying like $165 for 2 lines , the Internet was very slow sometimes, so i looked Information of cheaper carriers and good service and i Found Straight Talk,. that uses T-Mobile and At&t network, ( depends of your Sim Card ) so i bought 2 at&t sim cards from Ebay, like $70 dollars each, and i bought this awesome device too , and i unlocked the iphone 4s ( sprint iphone ) of my daughter with GPP and now i been using Straight Talk service $45 UNLIMITED, ( $90 dollars for both phones ) and the internet is very fast , i don't know what it is, but i guess is because i have the AT&T Straight Talk sim card . i'm very happy with this new service.
btw, i tried this APN settings, but,...

APN type: default, supl, mms (notice I took off the mms! This is because we’ll enter a 2nd APN for mms.)
APN protocol: IPv4

but my data and mms wasn't working. so i finally found the correct APN settings for my At&t sim card.
APN: tfdata
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mms-tf.nt
MMSC proxy: 66.209.11.33
