[Q] GPS Specific to ROMs - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All this time that I have been flashing ROMs, I have noticed that on Some ROMs GPS fixes like a charm without even modifying any setting in the ROM(gps.cong and gpssetup). Whereas on some ROMs, no matter what you do, gettin a fix is a pain.
I read somewhere that maybe if we flash only the modem(inside the tar) of the ROM in which we got the fix properly, then it might solve the issue.
What do you people have a say?

okay.. no replies.

GPS questions are apparently not very often get solved
I would try it but i want confirmation of a dev if this is possible before i do something wrong with my phone

GPS not working after installing Dutty´s V4

First the usual "appologies" that seem to be "a must" in this forum.
1.) Reason for not posting in the V4 thread is simply because that thread is too large, too full of non-subject replies.
2.) I have read the 2:nd FAQ post, does not even mention the problem with the GPS
3.) I have read the wiki
4.) I have searched the forum (and it does not even find anything because GPS has too few letters)
5.) I have browsed through 50 pages in the V4 thread and did not find an answer (and got tired reading ).
So, my problem:
GPS does not work after I installed the V4 rom. It did work in V3.
I have tried quick GPS, I also started GPS-tool (which did not get a fix either or find any satellites).
The orange blinking LED does not start when using GPS tool (it starts in miomap however).
And googlemaps does not get a fix (or find any satellites) either.
My radio is 12.32 , if that has anything to do with GPS?! I have sim-unlocked the phone. I live in Sweden.
I read a few posts where people seem to have a problem with their GPS after changing radio, even when they revert back to their original radio. During the sim-unlocking process the radio is temporarily changed, maybe that is the source of the problem?

What is the deal with everyone starting new threads instead of posting in the thread where it needs to be.
MY gps works just fine. 1.27.12.11 radio with dutty v4 rom.

I like it.. you apologised for not following the rules.. then didnt follow them. excellent.
The Dutty V4 thread is the one most likely to be of use.. I know its full of people not posting in the right place.. but adding to that isn't going to help.
As to the problem.. People keep reporting GPS issues with the Radio ROM's... Now It may be me but the radio rom shouldnt have anything to do with the GPS... unless im mistaken its a seperate chip and will have a seperate flash (which you probably cant modify)
What COM port are you trying to use? What are your External GPS settings set too in the control panel?
I got no problems with new threads on new issues. 150+ pages is just useless.
I haven't seen the GPS problem you talk about. Might try re-flashing your radio version, or a different version.
No neither do I.. But this isn't a new issue..
Loads of people are saying they have GPS issues after flashing..
At least a few of them I've seen are actually caused by people not understanding what they are on about (A few of the people seem to be confused by the fact the GPS may be on a different COM port after the flash for example)
the others all seem to follow the logic that changing the radio may help.. so trying that would be a good place to start (flashing back to the radio the device e shipped with for example and seeing if the GPS now works int he new Os with the old radio?)
I've never had a GPS problem.. But have seen all these fixes so many times whilst reading other threads I can regurgitate them, and thats without even searching for this issue.

start gps test
program files\chartcross\gpstest\bin\gpstest
this works for me
"Duttys DualTouch v4 RTM Release [ FAQ added in Post 2]" thread on 158 page
Go through the setup again.... If need be try a hard reset then Run GPSTest
Ensure you are using a radio compatible with Dutty's ROM. Try one or all of
these first, then report back what you find if it doesn't come back.
You shouldn't have to duck when you poke your head into the forum. Just be thankful it's not a contact sport yet. Just because you're using one ROM or another avoid attributing the problems/issues with that persons ROM. There are so many things that can create problems and user error is the biggest culpret.
Who can blame you for not putting this under the ROM release thread? It's too broad, likely not applicable, and everyone and his uncle has posted something there.
Cheers.
Ok thanks for the answers. Somehow the GPS just started working again, but I will never know why I started google maps, mio maps, tomtom a few times, and suddenly after 2 days the gps started working I was just about changing rom and radio, but now it seems as if I will stick to V4 a couple of days
thanks!
this version works ok with nearly all apps and cooked apps the only problem is the touchflo, the touch flo works but its not 100%

Non-Sense rom GPS fix [Evo Style]

I was helping my brother trouble shoot his Inspire's inability to get a GPS fix when using MIUI. He told me he had tried all the driver swaps and other methods that are commonly prescribed, and that nothing had worked. However, in CM7 and sense based ROMs the GPS worked fine.
In EVO circles, this is a common problem on MIUI as well. The work around that has been developed is as follows:
1) Install a [near]stock ROM. Anything sense based should work.
2) Turn on the GPS radio
3) Leave it on, and reflash your favorite ROM (MIUI/CM7/etc)
That should fix it. It worked great on his phone, and he is happily navigating in MIUI with full accuracy and a very short acquisition time.
Enjoy!
sounds more like it was a bad flash or bad agps data left behind. but then i dont use miui. There is a bit more involved with the 'evo gps fix' and you havent done any of that. I havent seen any problems thus far with gps that wasnt fixed with the proper methods for cm. miui has its own set of problems and isnt really supported here.

Well this was the method that worked for his phone, after all the other inspire fixes had failed. He'd flashed, cleared, reflashed, MIUI (various releases) and continued to have the same GPS problem. I figured I'd share in case anyone else was in a similar boat.
Cheers,
Kyle

Which baseband are you using? If you're not using the July baseband, I'd suggest upgrading to it. Just search for July baseband and you should find instructions. If you're already on that baseband, try updating your RIL with the GetRIL app from the play store. If none of that works, try wiping cache and dalvik in recovery, then fixing permissions.
I have the new baseband and have tried numerous wipes and fixing permissions and also the getril from market. Has anyone one fixed this with a new sim card I have read if you can find an old style card things work better in the g2x?
Are you using WIFI at the time or mobile data? I have issue with MMS using wifi. Everyhting works as expected when using mobile data.
I can receive messages with wifi calling on and that is the only time I can get them on wifi or mobile data nothing
Hey I'm having this same problem. Has anyone else been able to solve this? From what I've seen, it seems that the OP and I are the only ones with this problem
I tried tons of other things and never got it to work correctly I ended up exchanging phone under warranty for 5 bucks and with the new unit had none of the problems that I was having with the old one so in my opinion it is a hardware issue that you can not fix with out changing out phone I ran across a few others that ended up changing out phone. The only thing I can recommend is somewhere I saw a thread where some people had flashed a experimental rom and lost the ability to text and they had to use some kind of at commands to the modem to get it back in the right mode you should be able to find it if you search the fourm

I was able to find this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19794570&postcount=9
but I'm a little confused because he says that he "saved" the settings or something after he clicked refresh, but I don't see any option to save. any time i leave that menu and go back to it, the numbers are gone again.
it has been my experience that even with completely stock, unrooted builds, MMS picture messaging does not work with wifi. even in jacksonville, fl and new orleans, la (both 4g markets), that while on wifi, if you receive a picture message and attempt to download it, the phone will connect to the 4g mobile data service to download it. it happened on both my g2 and my g2x. i want to say that with wifi calling turned on you can download picture messages, but im not entirely sure.

[Q] GPS problems? Might have found a fix...

Posting in Q+A since I didn't see anything like this amongst the Relay ROM threads...
I flashed my ROM to Validus 5.0.2 a couple of months ago, and discovered my GPS had stopped working. However, it was not like most cases of it failing that I had read (where it seemingly tries to get a fix but never does). Instead, any attempt to use the GPS in any app would crash and reboot the OS. I tried GPS Status among others in attempting to clear AGPS data, etc. with the same end result. Even GPS Status would crash while loading the GPS.
I had a suspicion that since Validus (and maybe FatToad also?) borrowed at least some functions from CM12, it also brought along a CM12 bug involving NVRAM corruption upon flashing (don't quote me lol, this is what I vaguely recall reading somewhere here). At least, CM12 ROMs on (at a minimum) D2 chipsets around the time of Validus's release in Feb. seem to also display GPS issues. Same goes for Validus builds on multiple other Samsung devices, among others, IIRC.
Not wanting to flash ROMs between stock and custom multiple times and maybe hopefully fix the problem (since I didn't see confirmation it would fix what *I* was experiencing), I bought a new phone for a daily (just in case) and tried the attached patch (believed I just used the hw patch). Much to my surprise, it worked! No bricked phone, just a functional GPS.
Unfortunately, since it was a little while since I found the patch, I don't completely recall its origin, other than it was to repair another D2 Samsung device with CM12 (may have been S2 or S3).
YMMV with the attached patches. It may fix the laggy acquisition as well, but I was not trying to repair that particular issue in my testing.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! Nandroid first! I take no responsibility if this patch results in data loss or sets your phone on fire.
I also make no claim to have created this. Credit goes to the mystery person somewhere in XDA who created/found this patch for an alternate device.
I am curious to see if the patch helps anyone else avert wiping their Relay to fix GPS. I hope it will help someone out.
DIRECTIONS: Place the attached zips into your sdcard, then flash from recovery. For good measure, wipe your Dalvik/cache after flashing before you reboot. You should only need to flash one of the zips for the fix to take effect. If the hwonly patch has no effect, then try hw+configs.
NOTE: Patch was tested on 5.0.2 Validus ROM. I am not sure if this works with other ROMs or Android versions. If you're willing to try it, let us know the results.

Marshmallow GPS doesn't get a fix but Nougat does?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. When using the official COS 13 rom everything works but GPS is slow to get a fix and when it does, it is out of sync i.e. position is further back or forward from my real location.
When I flash to Nougat, GPS works as it should, locks pretty quickly and is accurate. I've tried changing modem firmwares, using TopNTP to patch the gps.conf file and nothing seems to work in COS 13, which is the OS I prefer since Kali Nethunter works on it with no hitches.
I would really like to go back to COS13 but I use GPS occasionally and as the old saying goes, you only wish you had it when you need it the most. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
Guess no one else ever heard about this.
It's not that nobody has heard of it, but you're asking about an issue with an older version of Android that is no longer being actively developed, and due to security flaws is no longer safe to run on your handset. As with all versions of Android, the code is open sourced, so you are more than welcome to dig into the source code, get your hands dirty, and fix anything you want, but expecting anyone else to fix an issue on a deprecated OS is a bit much, IMHO.
Never asked if anyone can fix it, I won't be so bold since I never did any Android development myself, hence is stated I flashed different firmware and used GPS.conf apps etc just asked if anyone else came across this issue since at one point in time we were all on cos13 and if it could be solved by flashing a zip or editing a conf file.
