Your phone must be rooted prior to the installation of ClockworkMod. Once you have the phone rooted, simply follow these easy steps and you will have Clockwork Recovery installed on your phone in no time!
From your phone, launch the Android Market and search for a free app called ‘ROM Manager’. Once found, install it.
Once it has been installed, launch ‘ROM Manager’ on your phone.
In ROM Manager, tap ‘Flash ClockworkMod Recovery’. Specify or confirm your phone model if prompted during the process, and follow any on-screen instructions.
Be patient as ClockworkMod is installed, as it can take quite some time. Once the process if finsihed, you have ClockworkMod installed on your phone.
Once it has been installed, booting into ClockworkMod recovery is pretty simple. You can either launch Rom Manager and tap ‘Reboot into Recovery’

If flash anothers phone recovery your phone will be soft brick or something wrong. G3 is not available at rom manager. for cwm recovery installatiom pm to mumbozver for link of installer
Darn. Well, then I'm sorry, flash a ROM with CWM Recovery installed :
Kyrillos' ROM
Indroid ROM
Lestatious ROM
You can also try flashing the recovery.bin file from these ROMs separately. However, do that at your own risk!

Yeah, I know it will soft-brick the phone. But I did not know that it wasn't available for G3. Sorry, my bad!

I would like to know how to upgrade my clockwork recovery from 5.0.8.0 to the newest version. Is it just a matter of flashing a zip from sd IN recovery?

Download rom manager from the market. It will update recovery to the latest version.

Thanks. I started Rom Manager, and it said I don't have root acheived, which I do. SuperUser did not ask for a request from this app... So I ignore that warning, and choose flash clockworkmod recovery, and it downloads, but says it cannot complete the request.

I found a download for 5.0.2.0 img file that I can just flash on HBOOT. Thanks guys.

Yes you need to be rooted inorder to use ROM Manager properly.
Don't use ROM Manager, it's ****. Best way is to use fastboot and do it manually
I currently have Endymion V3.3 rom installed. I went through the revolutionary process to get root. I currently have the revolutionary cwm recovery installed. I tried installing 4EXT updater but when I went to recovery I still got revolutionary cwm recovery. Also I did a backup with this recovery, would I be able to use it when I install 4EXT. Thanks

All you need to do is to
1. Download and install 4EXT Recovery Updater, and launch it.
2. It will ask for root access, which you must grant.
3. After granting it root access you can use it to download and flash 4EXT Recovery. You must have an internet connection for this.
4. The recovery updater app will now download 4EXT Recovery and flash it on your device, replacing the older CWM Recovery you have currently, it's that simple.
No complicated steps... just like running an app.
As for using backups made with 4EXT, yes you will be able to use them. 4EXT is 100% backward compatible with CWM Recovery. Even the location of your backups remains unchanged (in the folder sdcard/clockworkmod/backups)
Go ahead, try the steps i outlined above. Then let us know if you hit any problem (very unlikely though!)

Hey, i have a bit of trouble...
Just followed your guide to install 4ext recovery but the **** wont work...
I have downloaded the updater apk and installed it, i granted superuser access, then i pressed (in the application) "Online install | upgrade" then chose the latest recovery package and pressed install.
After that has been done it says: "Successfully flashed new recovery. Recovery.img was saved to sdcard/..." but later when i reboot to mine recovery i still have the freakin CWM 2.5.0.3 or something installed... WHAT am i doing wrong..?

See the above posts.... this method works flawlessly. But if for some reason you're unable to update from CWM, just download the attached file, boot into CWM recovery, and flash this zip from within recovery.
Alternately, you can also download the attached Android Flasher and flash the recovery (extract the recovery.img from the zip file) using it. It's a fast and simple method to do it.
I'm feeling extra helpful today, so i'll type out another method... Use fastboot (i assume you know how to set it up, otherwise look at my signature for link) to flash the recovery using the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

The recovery attached is not the touch version, its the most stable non-touch version. Once you are on it, you can later use the Recovery Control app to upgrade to the touch version.
Hope this will solve your problem.
If your phone has the latest HBOOT and unlocked with htcdev.com then you must use the fastboot flash method as exlained above.
But for Revolutionary the regular app method should work just fine.

acutally i dont know if i have made a mistake now or if t doesnt matter...
i sit on a HTC Desire GSM and not a HTC Desire S... does it matter???
and i have tried the option when you are booting into the CWM recovery 2.7.0.5 and try to flash the zip file from there but nothing works... it just says when im opening the 4ext updater apk that "Im up to date"...
i have rom manager installed and 4ext recovery updater, maybe there is some complications with them both installed???
really need to get the 4ext recovery... since i dont like the CWM and since i need the 4ext to install sebastiaaans rom....
and one more thing: you said that i lately can upgrade to the touch version, am i able to do this with my phone? PVT-1 Ship S-ON BRAVO

so why do you post it right here? I think in desire forums your chance too get a satisfying answer it's really higher. Btw I don't think that there is a really big difference, but who could tell you better than a desire (without s) owner?

Word of friendly advice : You shouldn't go around asking for help in forums for other devices as you may end up flashing something that could bugger up your phone... There is a HUGE difference between the Desire S and the Desire. Don't go by the similarity in their names... We're a very helpful bunch over here at the DS forums, but i would kindly request you to take this query to your own community which i'm sure will help you sort it out. (Or grab a Desire S and start roaming these lands!! ) - just kidding.
Better still, why not PM madmaxx82 and ask the creator himself regarding 4EXT issues.

On the ClockworkMod Site, they show Verizon S3 Touch version of 6.0.1.2 available. I am using EZ Recovery but it only has options of 5.8.4.5 Touch and 6.0.1.2 (not touch). Is there a way to get EZ Recovery to flash the downloaded version from the CWM site?
If not, the downloaded CWM 6.0.1.2 file is an img file. How do I change from my existing CWM 5.8.4.5 Touch to this newer version of recovery without ODIN, ADB etc. Can I flash it using "install zip from SD Card" while in CWM Recovery?

Since you don't want to use ADB or anything like that, download ROM Manager from the Play Store. Open it, give it root access, choose Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, select Verizon's S3 and let it do its thing. When it's done a popup will ask if you want the touch version. Select yes, pay them $2 and install it.

I've read somewhere of warnings / problems people have had with ROM Manager on the S3. Anyone confirm or dismiss this?
I suppose I can also deal with ADB - was just hoping for an easier (and rock solid) solution. I will probably get ADB and not sweat another interface...
Is working with my current CWM Touch 5.8.4.5 an issue - or can I continue with it without worry?
I used RM to install cwm and worked just fine. I didn't do the touch version, just the latest regular version.
click Custom in EZ Recovery - browse to the img file for CWM touch that you downloaded. Then click Flash. That's how I did it with EZ Recovery.

This. I don't know a whole lot about Rom Manager, but I've seen a fair number of issues reported. Besides, why bother downloading something new when you already have EZ Recovery which can do the job just fine. Download the .img you want to use, toss it on your phone, open EZ Recovery and choose Custom, find the .img file you downloaded, and hit Flash.

Thank you spyderman09 and Sycobob - that was exactly what I needed. It was my sentiment exactly - why install a new program when an existing one can do the job just fine.
I've been happy with EZ Recovery - now even happier - great tool.
How do I convert from CWM to TWRP properly?
I searched around and it seems that I should just be able to use goomanager and install open recovery script. I do that, I see it download TWRP and then it says recovery installed, but when I reboot recovery, it still takes me to CWM.
If I go into ROM Manager, it looks like both recoveries are installed and then clicked to use TWRP and it still booted in CWM.
Then I used ROM Installer to install TWRP and now it reboots into TWRP when I reboot into recovery.
But, when I go into ROM Manager, it still says that CWM is installed. Do I need to get rid of that? If so, how?
I would try this. Odin to CWM, uninstall ROM Manager, and then use Goomanager to update to TWRP.

Not exactly sure what Odin to CWM means. Odin is software on my PC? Will that be destructive in any way? Right now, it does all seem like it's working fine except that ROM Manager sees CWM there too.
Any other ideas?

I meant install CWM with Odin. Uninstall ROM Manager first.
so i tried installing the twrp recovery from xda's other thread and once it boot looped and when I re-flashed the stock firmware then it worked! but it removed root access and when I re-rooted it using Odin then the twrp recovery didn't work any longer?? So WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW TO INSTALL A CUSTOM RECOVERY?

Hello, and welcome to XDA!
Sounds like try again.
I am assuming you are using TWRP from this thread? If that's the case, you may have skipped over post two that explains what to do if you bootloop:
If your TWRP is bootlooping please do the following :
1. Go to sammobile and download the stock Firmware and extract the zip
2. Put your phone into download mode
3. Connect your phone with your pc
4. Open odin and select PDA on older versions or AP on newer versions.
5. Select the stock firmware
6. Click start and wait until its done.
7. Re-flash TWRP.
8. Now you should be able to boot into TWRP and system

May have to do the process over at this point though. But if you lose root again once done, should be able to flash SuperSU in your new recovery this time.

Hi,
So the classical way of rooting involves unlocking the bootloader, flashing a custom recovery (like CWM), and then gaining root by flashing SuperSU in recovery.
To flash SuperSU, first find a version of Chainfire's SuperSU that works for your device. Based on your chipset, one for arm64 may work, otherwise go with the arm architecture.
Copy this zip file to your device (to say, the root folder of internal storage, where you can find it later), then reboot to recovery.
Select "Install from ZIP file", browse to the location mentioned earlier, select SuperSU, and confirm to flash away.
You should have root again. :good:
