Evo Shift on Cricket - multiple problems, need help asap - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend has a shift on cricket which was working fine until she downloaded the 2.3.3 OTA update. Now, she is unable to play YouTube videos. It says something about an error and to try again.
Additionally, I am unable to root her phone using any possible method I can find. Nothing is working to root her phone.
As of right now, she is running 2.3.3 with the 1.08.00.0506 radio and 98.001 hboot.
We need help asap. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Not sure about YouTube...
If your running the Gingerbread update your not going to be able to root until a new exploit is found.

I believe what you want is HERE.

Got Youtube working with the MikShifted G rom. Stock gingerbread wasnt liking anything i did for youtube.
Just like stock but with more options. MMS is my next target.
If you need to get root with s-off use the HBoot downgrade then perm root. it is a little tricky but its worth it. just be sure to READ everything before attempting. afterwards you can flash a nice replacement rom like Mikshifted g. i tried CM7, stock, and antoehr non-sense rom and they were not liking cricket.
Hboot downgrade

New Root Method for *ALL* HTC 2.1 Android Phones

http://forum.androidspin.com/showthread.php?t=2757
The link above is for instructions claimed to work with all HTC 2.1 Android handsets. I've been trying to get this to work on my Hero but I keep getting stuck at step 7 with my phone offline and unplugg/replug USB does not change it from offline to recovery. Anyone else have luck with this?
why not use unrevoked or the the how to here
Won't work for me. I'm not using Sprint and my build number is newer than Sprints so I can't flash it.

bummer.. well i would ask the op of the root method on that other forum. i haven't got a clue about that root method.
Check out Droiddog.com site, they've posted a video (actually a two parter) on this rooting method... It is not easy.
I'm pretty sure you can just flash the RUU that has test-keys, and then root that.
Use Regaw's
Like mrinehart93 said, just downgrade to the RUU ending in .5, then follow these instructions.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
If you follow them exactly you will end up with rooted stock 2.1 with that same RUU. I actually just rooted for the first time except loaded this ROM, which is stock using the updated RUU.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703267
Good luck.
dosnt look easy though !!
I appreciate the responses so far but you all still don't understand. I'm not a Sprint customer, and my current software version is 2.36.556.1. I CAN'T downgrade to one of Sprint's RUUs (already tried just for kicks).

just tried, step 7 adb devices and nothing i dont get any kind of recovery menu. only the initial white screen recovery, no offline device menu
I'm thinking that the problem is Windows not executing the adb devices command fast enough. I'll have to try this again later booted into OS X or Ubuntu.

Weird problems

So i bought an inspire from my friend and all was good until yesterday when the volume down button stopped working on me. then after a series of crazy boots it started working again which is leading me to believe the software is effed up. Its running MDJ's Ultimate droid HD v 1.8 and is completely freaking out on me. Being new to android, i just want to flash it back to stock. Can anyone help me out? also, the volume button is again acting stupid so hopefully it starts working again.

This is the ROM/Radio RUU from the latest OTA Update (it has root though):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
You want the first download (RUU_Ace_Cingular_US_1.84.502.11-Radio-26_06_06_30_M_PD98IMG.zip - No side load (Unknown sources/3rd party app - original ATT) version
md5sum: f2c80025662eae4f68f205d5cda48fa2)
If you want pure stock here's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224) the RUU from ship (no root). After you install this at some point you will be prompted to install the OTA update

Turn off USB debugging (Settings-Applications-Development-Remove check from USB Debugging), connect phone to computer, make sure you're in Charge only mode. The file you download is in .exe, so just run the program and follow the prompts. As stated earlier, this won't turn S-Off to S-On, but you'll still have a pure stock, unrooted ROM and Radio. There's a thread somewhere that discusses getting S-On (which you'll need to do before you run RUU if you're worried about it). Give me a minute and I'll try to dig it up.
Edit:
Follow the instructions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033353) under MISCELLANEOUS to get S-On before running the RUU. Needed files are provided.
Note: that thread says to run the RUU, then perform the modified hack kit instructions to get s-on, then run the ruu again. You should just be able start from running the hack to to step 3, running ./gfree -s on, then running the RUU - you shouldn't have to run it first.
Another note... make sure you download the hack kit from this thread. It's version 9. The newer versions worked a little differently and I don't think they use gfree to get s-off, so newer versions won't work like this.
What's Ruin? Why would I need to run it and what's s-off? Sorry I'm trying to learn as I go.

S-Off is Radio Security off. This is what allows you to flash custom ROMs/Radios/Kernels. Part of the root process is gaining S-Off. If you want a straight from factory set-up, you would need to return to S-On. This would only be necessary if you're returning the phone to ATT or HTC for some reason, even then it's not likely they would check this setting. You can still be S-On and run the stock, unrooted ROM
The RUU is a combination of the stock ROM, kernel, and radio. When you run it, it wipes anything currently on the phone and installs the image that's installed at the factory. When it's done, you will have a stock, unrooted ROM and kernel with the factory radio
If you feel it's a software issue, why not try flashing a different ROM instead of going back to stock? There are plenty of ROMs out there that work flawlessly if not next to it.
I would like to thank you homeslice976, as I stumbled into this thread looking around, but I had this same exact question!

HELP!!
I've got visionary+ installed on my dhd, i've got goldcard. I've temprooted....what now? Can i flash a rom or will that brick my phone??
And yes i know there are guides all over the place but i dont understand them.....can someone talk me through this in baby talk...thank you
I'm pretty sure you shouldn't flash before permanent root
It's all good now. Worked it out and now loving life. Perm rooted my dhd. Now running coredroid v7 and even flashed new radio......life is good. I'm a little hesitant to flash new themes though for some reason incase it all goes wrong. Also I'm sure coredroid v7 is meant to be running sense 3.0 and it still shows 2.1 on about phone? Any ideas?

Help! Need to root updated 2.47.507.7

I got a new phone today from AT&T. I upgraded to the new ATT Gingerbread using their update button (I wasn't thinking). I like the stock rom...will probably keep it...but I need to be rooted so I can sideload! Help!
I tried Bubby's tool...it just said something about update version being older than what was currently in the system...so it wouldn't work for me! I'm about to try ace-hack-kit...hopefully that'll work for me!

I was able to root with attn1's hack kit just this morning with Gingerbread. btw. Sideloading is now "legal" unknown sources checkbox is in the stock GB rom.
Unknown sources
Strange...I didn't see unknown sources in the stock unrooted gb upgrade. I saw mock locations...but not unknown sources. Update...the Hack Kit seemed to work. Now I'm working on S-off.

its there...just under Applications.
Ya its in stock gingerbread I got it without root right under applications in settings
Just a little side note:
I flashed today the new Inspire ROM provided through the HTC site. There are 2 things I found.
1. If you flash over a custom ROM using the PC method (using file RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_Cingular_US_2.47.502.7_Radio _12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M_release_200368_signed hosted on HTC's site) you will go back to total stock, loosing all rooting ENG-OFF etc. You will have a plain ATT ROM. Even recovery will be reset to HTC. No CMR anymore. It might be good to know that you get full stock if you want to return your unit....
2. Good news is, the old method is still working except that the USB drivers act up. I got back to rooted by reinstalling HTC SYNC and leaving it on. ADB only worked for me (Windows 7 32bit) when phone was set to sync and not to "charge only".
Hope this helps somebody.

If you have ENG S-OFF, then that is strictly a function of the engineering HBOOT image and flashing a new HBOOT will clear it, but if you have Radio S-OFF (which is typical of most of the rooting methods available for Inspire/DHD) then flashing a new HBOOT (or any or all other images from an RUU) won't clear radio S-OFF.

CM7 installation question

Hey everyone! I have a question that I couldn't find the answer to in the General or Dev forums.
My brother asked me if I could root his phone. I have experience with rooting, CWM, etc on my phone (Atrix), so I told him that I could, but I'd have to do some research first.
He did install the 2.3.3 update, so I understand permanent root is not possible yet. So here's my question-
Is there anything that would stop me from executing the following sequence and successfully getting CM7 onto the phone?
Gain Temp root
Rename install_recovery.sh to something else
Install ROM manager
Install CWM Recovery
Have ROM manager download CM7
Flash CM7
Done
Thank you in advance!
DK
Will not work, the bootloader is locked so flashing roms isn't gonna happen.
I dont think that would work... The shift is as locked down as the atrix was. I am pretty sure the partitions would still be write protected with only temp root...
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
I didn't even think about the bootloader possibly being locked. I always thought HTC had unlocked bootloaders until very recently (Evo 3D) when they released locked bootloaders, then announced that they would allow you to unlock them.
According to this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Evo_Shift_4G:_Full_Update_Guide#Flashing_the_Engineering_HBoot
Flashing that will unlock the boot loader. So I should be able to change my steps to:
[Edit: That site is basically instructions on how to install CM7 onto the Shift, and those steps only require temporary root to execute.]
Gain Temp root
Flash HBoot
Rename install_recovery.sh to something else
Install ROM manager
Install CWM Recovery
Have ROM manager download CM7
Flash CM7
Done
Is there anything else that would stop my process above from working?
EDIT - MY Atrix had a new bootloader installed when I did the OTA to Gingerbread several months ago. If the Evo Shift also got a new bootloader with their GB update, three is a chance that flashing HBoot could brick the phone. I'm going to start looking into this now, however if someone knows the answer to this I'd appreciate an answer
Wont work... We have an emmc partitioned phone just like the evo 3d. The o.t.a. to 2.3.3 included a new locked/encrypted bootloader. The partitions are write protected and encrypted. Flashing the eng hboot with a locked/encrypted recovery partition could equal brick...
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Thanks for that info, I couldn't find confirmation either way on the bootloader. I was going to check check MD5Sums before flashing the HBoot just in case.
So can I restore back to Froyo and the old bootloader? On the Atrix you could do this (as long as you didn't unlock your bootloader) by using RSD Lite and flashing the stock SBF file. A quick search on the Evo Shift implies that I can do something similar with the Evo Shift - RUU back to stock Froyo? I admit I know nothing about how that works, I'll start searching now, and any additional info would be great!
Edit: Looks like there is no way to do that either, there doesn't seem to be a way to go back. Interesting that the phone got a new bootloader with the OTA update. My Atrix got a new bootloader with its 2.3 update too, but that was because the new bootloader allowed the users to unlock it. I also see that HTC's online unlocker doesn't list the Evo Shift. So it looks like my brother installing the OTA screwed himself out of getting to run any custom ROMs.
DK
You got it man... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... Htc went all moto on us... They even used the same style of 256 bit encryption... Effing ****ty!
