Wireless tether - Thunderbolt General

So the 15th is comming up (the end of free tether). is it known that the android wireless tether will work?

It's been working lol
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App

Doesn't work for me anymore may have been blocked though. Running GTP's 1.5.1

Its working fine for me....

Or maybe my laptop doesn't like me

u have to be rooted for wireless tether to work and u can just install it from google.code verizon cannot block an app from running.

I am rooted and I have used it on this phone but now when I try to connect it tries then my laptop says disconnected and wireless tether is still running on my phone. Have tried two versions one on market and latest from Google code

Wireless tether 3.0
I found wireless tether 3.0 works for me

Maybe the kernel you are using doesn't support it?

that would be my guess. it used to be a requirement that your kernel supported netfilter (iptables). dunno if it still is offhand.

Have you tried to forget the connection on your laptop and then re-establish the connection with your phone?

I have been using wifi_tether_v3_0-pre14.apk go into your settings and Change Device-Profile to "HTC Evo 4G" and also click the checkbox for "Routing fix" using those settings is what I have set for it to allow you to use Wifi Tether using an infrastructure connection instead of the ad-hoc connection it defaults to so it shows up to your computer just like any other access point would or the default wifi tether app on the phone that will cost money soon.

After installing the MR2 planejane ROM I was doing the de-bloat and came across an app called TetheringGuard2.1.0 or something like that. I think Verizon is really trying to screw people over. There are various articles around also stating that the Gingerbread update will have safeguards built in order to prevent people from using tethering applications. I simply removed this stupid app using Titanium Backup and Wireless Tether seems to be working just fine for now...

Patched Sprint Wifi Tether

Hey, i cant find where i saw this mentioned, but one of the dev roms had a sport listing not only a WIRED tether patch, but also a WIRELESS TETHER patch using SPRINTS hotpot app.
I have no end of issue with the 2.05 wifi tether apps, etc. I really like the sprint/htc one, anyone know where to download the patched version? Been searching but cant find it.
Please don't recommend the android wireless tether app, as said previously I dont like it and it doesn't work reliably.

I might be wrong but i dont think therebis a wireless tether patch. Only wired usb.
The wireless tether app on the market works just fine plus his latest version on the google code page.
Juat google "wireless tether for root users" or wireless tether for htc evo and you will see a link for the authors google code page.

Ah. I know what you need. A simple patch. Search for Calkulin's mods. He has a usb and wireless tether authentication patch that will solve your issue on usb tethering and the hot spot app. All you do is download it and flash it through recovery. If you need it and can't find it Pm me and I'll send it to ya

Flash this through recovery and you are good to go. The only problem is you can't tether your 4g connection, only 3g.

SO why would i want to patch Sprint wifi tether if "wifitether" allows me to share data through 4g and this patch only 3g? I am just asking?
Well. Alot of people, including me experience what I call the fading effect where the broadcasted network disappears. As well as other issues that go on for days. Lots of people with this patch using Sprint's app have lots of less struggle. With the same performance. Without 4g is a little sacrifice seeing that most people willing to give it up just don't have it. Soooo.... That's why

Caulk's does not fix wifi hotspot... it is a usb tether fix only.

if it does fix the hotspot then maybe you should tell him to update his description of the fix and thread because he states usb only.

I cant get "wired tether" to work. "wireless tether for root users" works good. i installed the apk that was posted earlier and that was version 1.2 . That geave the kernel not supported error. i then installed version 1.4 from http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/
I go no error message this time. I used unrevoked to root my phone before installing these. I assume its the unsupported kernel but im not sure b/c i dont know if the kernel really has wat it needs or not. I would think it does b/c the built in sprint wireless/wired tethers prolly have to use it as will, or these tether apps might be doing it differently i dont know.
personall I like the native wired tether for android users. I never have a problem with it. I have 4g and it works. Must be rooted. As far as wifi I don't use it soooo....

If you are already rooted you can use a wifi tether app like Wireless Tether, you don't have to mess with PDA net (PDAnet is great if you are not rooted). I tried Barnacle but had trouble getting my Mac to join the adhoc network it creates. Rather than mess with it too much I put on Wireless Tether and it worked Great.

I can second Barnacle WiFi and also use the stock Mobile Hotspot.
If you are rooted you do not need any program for tether.

Use the referenced APN and you will have tethering available......
I second the wireless tether especially if you have your unlimited data still. Its stupid to pay for it twice

If rooted it also works to remove all entitlement apns from the APN database in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
Do you think there will ever be a wifi app that does not require rooting. I had to downgrade back to pda.net. It works but I already miss the wifi app I used for years on WM 6.5.
I believe most custom roms allow tethering without adding it to your plan.
I asked about coredroid in another thread, and I got conflicting reports though.
If you are already rooted, just flash a custom ROM. then you don't need an app and you will also have a hotspot. My favorite is Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 but if you want to keep Sense UI, try Android Revolution HD or CoreDroid or some other Sense based ROM. And Congrats on your escape from under Steve Jobs's thumb =D

yes by changing the APN you can enable wifi tethering without root , ive done it many times on un-rooted phones ,just dont use it to much or it will be noticed and good ole at&t will add the package (not sure about other carriers)

[HOW-TO] Get wifi-tether working on Charge

All,
Not sure if this has been discussed previously or not but if you would like to get wifi tethering working in infrastructure mode on the Charge follow the steps below. Some people are claiming that Verizon is monitoring 3rd party wifi tethering and will bill you for that usage. So use at your own risk.
1. Follow the steps here to root your Stock EE4 image to root. I chose not to install one of the ROMs yet and I am using imnut's PBJT non-OC voodoo kernel.
2. Once you have root (verified by the Superuser app appearing in your Applications). Install android-wifi-tether 3.1-beta2. This app can be found here (need to allow external sources).
3. Once installed open the Wireless Tether application and go to Settings. Change the device profile to "Samsung Fascinate" and you should be good to go from that point.
Happy tethering.
One thing I am uncertain of is this "hotspot_event_monitor" driver that is loaded. djp592 discusses a kernel mod here that removes this driver but I could not find an explanation of what it does exactly. Anyone know?

What is your source that VZ is NOT using their DPI boxes?
Oh wait, they do already, otherwise they would have the near-real-time data usage up on their website.
I would presume it's more the actual packet, as it would look much different between a DC and your laptop. There are many other methods that a DPI can use to figure it out. Also most wifi tethers are using nat, so mac address based makes no sense.

No, and I Wi-Fi tethered moderately on my Droid 1 since its release date (first with wifi-tether and then Barnacle when it came out because I like Barnacle better), on Eclair, Froyo, and Gingerbread.
And now I still tether on my Droid Charge with Barnacle and we don't see any extra fees. Of course, I just switched to the Gingerbread leak, so we'll see what happens.

I would like to add that after step 3 I had to change the setup-method to softap for samsung (master) i think this step is important to tether with infrastructure. It works fine on GB 2.3.4 running humble 2.1
That must be a Gingerbread thing. I am running stock EE4 ROM and "Auto" worked just fine.
One thing I did run into is that after turning off tethering you need to may need to cycle the wifi adapter to be able to associate to a wifi network.

Can you elaborate why you think 2.0.7 works better? On the Charge 2.0.7 seems to only support ad-hoc tethering.
The reason I went down this path is not for tethering per-se but just to be able to create a WPA network between my phone and laptop. Ad-hoc networking only supports WEP.
I wonder how verizon is conducting the monitoring? Are they just looking for your wifi adapter going into master mode? Or actually looking for evidence of tethering (i.e. iptables, dnsmasq)?

I doubt this. It is highly unlikely the tethering app rebroadcasts PHY-layer information. Far more likely is it retransmits L7 information. It is acting as a router, after all.

I will just say what's in the public realm. Try somewhere like dslreports and see what people are saying. There are a lot of posts from people that sound like they are absolutely sure it's sandvine.
If that is true, and you know what they are capable of, you know that it's not anything "on the phone".
Thanks for this, was wondering what I had to do to get it running in infrastructure.
If Verizon slows me down or tries to charge me for tethering, I'm just going to sell the phone and pay the ETF. I got the phone new for REALLY cheap, so I could probably make enough from it to not only pay the ETF and cover the cost of the phone, but come out on top by 20 bucks or so.
i know that on my iphone which im usuing for sh*** and giggles, i have a hack that makes apn adjustments that mask the tethered usage so Verizon cant tell that im using the phone to tether. to them it just looks like normal browsing. is there not an adjustment like that for android?

i tried installing a wifi tethering apk before reading this thread , i think it was the 3.1 beta 6, anyway i opened it and hit tether, it said running with errors.. i turned it off and uninstalled and now i cant get my wifi to work at all?? it shows my home router but wont sync up with it.. ive powered off a few times and even done a factory reset, still not working! any ideas why my wifi will not connect ?? just keeps saying scanning..connecting..disconnected!
Even with that .apk frozen or removed AT&T can still see you are tethering (by browser user agent string and data usage patterns) so be careful or you will find yourself in a tethering (4GB capped) plan. I'm not risking my grandfathered unlimited data for this.
If I'm full of crap here I'll find out soon enough. In the meantime, I'm putting on my fireproof suit.
All u need to do is root ur device and install titanium backup...once installed and running in titanium uninstall tether manager and u will have ur mobile hotspots. When u uninstall that at it does not check att network to see if u have a tethering plan

correct me if i'm wrong, but unless your tethering is excessive, AT&T is highly unlikely to mess with you (assuming you're on an "unlimited" plan).
Supposedly people are getting busted even after using only small amounts of data. Seems AT&T are seeing how data is used, not only how much. Lots of chatter on the net about this including lots on xda.

[Q] got the "tethering function blocked" from T-mobile yesterday

I got the "tethering function blocked" text message from T-mobile yesterday. This is the first time I have seen this and I did STFA before randomly posting. Now true this is the first time I have done tethering on the upgraded Gingerbread OS (currently running the rooted GB Weapon 3.0 ROM) all previous times I tethered were on the Rooted Froyo OS. I also noticed that after receiving this text message when I tried to use the internet browser on the device tethered to the phone I was directed to a T-mobile page stating that tethering was blocked and if I wanted it, it was an additional $15USD monthly cost.
Yes it appears that all the provider's (US= ATT, Tmbl, VW, Sprint) are now actively clamping down on devices tethering without a tethering plan included (probably hitting the large Metro-areas first -- I was in Houston when it happened = #4 largest), how exactly they know it is happening, I don't know.
I have seen where others have made comments about this but they were at or above the 2GB monthly limit. When I got this message from T-mobile I had used 400 megs of my 2GB allotment for the month, so I was nowhere near the cap.
Anybody know exactly how T-mobile is blocking this feature on rooted phones?? is it done on the T-mobile servers, does it send some data packet that alters files in the Android OS or does it alter the SIM chip files???
Has something changed in the Android OS (some sort of tattle-tale) or does T-Mobile have some new capability that can "sniff out" whether or not you are using the tethering option on your phone without enrolling in there "enable tethering capability" feature for a mere $15USD monthly of extortion? Say what you will, but I do not see where I should have to pay extra to tether a device to my data plan if I am below my allotted data usage per month, and no I have never exceeded the 2GB limit during my contract.
I saw a post about EasyTether, which says that it has a way to mask its operation (utilizing the same ports as the cell phone does for data ?????) so that the carrier cannot tell that the tethering option is being utilized. But it appears that it only works for USB, not for WiFi. For me tethering is about 50/50 -- for PC's I use the USB, for my tablets I use WiFi. So is there an app, driver, etc that works for both, or a way I can apply an update, edit a file, etc. to get the USB and WiFi tethering option to function properly without T-Mobile trying to extort me for more money every month??
I have seen the links that say to change (or use add-ins that will change) the web browser user strings, and did not find a consensus that this truly works.
I found links that mention freezing the Tethering Manager App (do search for -- How to Get Free Wifi Tether on Rooted T-Mobile Galaxy S2 on youtube and you can see the clip), which I would try if I could find the App. I have refreshed the Apps list in Titanium Backup and searched for a reference to this App (is it possibly named something different for the G2x running a Froyo or Gingerbread based ROM?) and no luck, I did not find it in either ROM so at this point I am not sure what to do.
any help on this subject is appreciated
I'm not quite sure why T-Mobile would be doing that, especially when you didn't go over your limit.
My suggestion would be to just use a 3rd party wifi tethering app.
I personally use the Wifi tethering app from opengarden. Since your phone is rooted you can use it. It also doesn't use any of your 2gb, so you shouldn't have a problem with tethering anymore.
Hope I helped!

Tmo has told me in the past they'll eventually catch up to you
and start charging for it.
I don't think they can possibly track it from a 3rd party application that requires root.
In fact I'm sure they can't, they can only track how much data you are using. They may be able to track the tether built into the phone, but especially not a 3rd party application that requires root.
I have been using Open garden's wifi tether, and never had problems from T-Mobile.
Give the open garden wifi tether a try, if your g2x is rooted. I'm pretty sure that they cannot track it, and it also doesn't use any of your allowed 2gb since its a root required app.

Simply not true. There are many different ways to monitor for tethering based on the packets. TTL and user agent would be the easiest to implement.

Not true. Data usage, weather it's tethering or mobile usage still counts against your monthly cap.

Yeah, if you have the tethering option marked in your phone, they will catch up to you. I use easy tether with the tethering option unmarked.
Hence the fact I almost forgot I have unlimited data...my bad folks.

We all have "unlimited" data. You just get throttled over 2 or 5 GB.

I got 10GB. 5 is not enough for me. I hate getting throttled.

Thanks for the information on the open garden app. I was hoping for a single app that would work for both USB and WiFi tethering but it is not looking good, so in the mean time I guess I will just have to use separate apps for use on PCs and Tablets.
as for the data usage, I don't see how an app could bypass ticking the data packet counter as files are downloaded, I am sure it counts any data packets being pulled down or pushed up from the cell connection. If not - I am sure any wireless provider would be scrambling to close that loop hole as quickly as possible.
The only way they can track it is by putting it into the o.s. build. I have NEVER seen that messgae and i live in atlanta. I tether my phone EVERYDAY to my laptop when i have to download certain files for work. I have been tethering for about a year and a half now.
use different browser. This happenned to me one day while using firefox, i switch to google chrome, i'm back on business. Dont know why thou.
I just tried barnacle wifi and it worked for me with no problems. Is it only the wired tether (pdaNet) having this issue?
Maby it's a CARRIER IQ telling on you!!! LOL

Been using barnacle wifi tether works good no issues
I have the sgs2 and it was blocked from the start. I would guess that with this newest horse**** update they rolled out for the g2x they included the files to block tethering. But all you need to do is root the phone install titanium backup pro and look for a file called tethering manager and freeze it then you can go back to tethering for free. But make sure you freeze it DO NOT DELETE IT!!! I heard a few people say when they deleted it it f***ed up the phone
I don't know if that is definitely the solution but give it a try and report back please.

The G2x was rooted 2 weeks after I got it when it had Froyo. It is currently on Weapon3.0 and it is rooted now as well. I hunted around for the "tethering manager.apk" file(s), and I was unable to locate any reference to it. I do have root access enabled and I have also enabled the "view hidden files" in the file manager and I still did not find any tethering manager file(s)
Please look at my post regarding T-mobile tethering
