[Q] Video Chat Options on Sidekick 4G? - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

Did a search here and elsewhere, but didn't find any options as of yet. Granted, the Sidekick 4G has Qik installed, I'd like to find an alternative that allows my wife and I to converse via video chat (Sidekick 4g to/from desktop webcam) when she's away from home.
We've tried a few alternate apps, such as Oovoo and Yahoo Messenger, which will both load on the Sidekick 4G ... but neither of them seem to recognize the front facing camera. They just show video input from the rear camera. Possibly Samsung and/or T-Mobile tinkered with the stock Qik app to allow it to recognize the Sidekick's front facing camer (just my guess).
Has anyone found (not just "it should work") an alternate video chat app that actually works on the Sidekick 4G, being able to recognize its front-facing camera?
Since we are both deaf, we communicate visually and its great that the Sidekick 4G now has video chat. Unfortunately, my Droid X only has a rear facing camera and doing the 'mirror trick' just plain sucks for our kind of usage. If we can't find an alternate video chat app for the Sidekick, then I might go ahead to upgrade my Droid X to one of the newer Verizon phones that has a front-facing camera now that the Qik app is available to a wider range of phones.

Do you mean the Yahoo Messenger app w/ plug-in? If so, when we tried that, it was not recognizing the front-facing camera...just the rear one? If there's another way to use Yahoo so it can 'see' the front-facing camera, please let me know how you did it. Thx!

its still in development... to get it fully functional im goin to send a request to the developer and use my device as a test device

Skype video chat may work.
Fring may work.
Tango may work, although im not sure if they have a Desktop version.
Only those 3 come to mind. Skype is a MUST try.

[Q] Front cam question

I have searched everywhere but can not find an answer,
Can the nexus s do video call through 3g from within the dialler like all the old phones used to do.
My wife really wants the phone but she is always doing video calls from her n97.
It doesnt say anything in the gingerbread manual about video calls so Im not sure if it will.
Anybody Know.
Yes. It will. Else whats Front Facing Camera for ?

Taking MySpace pics without the mirror in the bathroom, duuhh.
Rotflol.. Thats the best thing I have ever read !! hats off you man yes, they include FFCs to take own pictures !! LMAO !
just a question .. since when ? :O
Well the htc Evo had front facing cam, and you couldnt do normal video call.
Thats why im asking if anyone knows for sure yet.
Also iPhone has front can but can only do face time not
Proper 3g video call to anybody.
And in the gingerbread manual under calling it doesn't have an option for
Video call but it does have an option for voip call,
That's why I'm wondering if anybody knows.
Oh so u meant without any application ? My bad.
I doubt then. Nothing on the internet that suggests there is an android phone that does video calling without any application like Qik, Fring etc
But still .. taking pics was myspace was hilarious EPIC !
Dam man that sucks, so there is no point of the front cam in the end.
Is there an app dialer which can do normal video chat through 3g in which both phones dont need app ?
I really want my wife to get this phone but that is a deal breaker for her.

I'd guess, not at the beginning. From what I understand, front-facing camera (FFC) support is now enabled in the Camera application only, and possibly Video too.
The first app that will get video support is probably Google Talk; the current VoIP support seems, from all descriptions, to be voice-only. Hopefully we'd soon get video calls in Skype too, but that might take a while seeing as they just got around to releasing the voice-only client not too many months ago.[/QUOTE]
there is no application for video chat in stock gingerbread, You'll require a third party application such as yahoo messaging for video chat.
google supported video chat is coming with honeycomb, or possibly earlier with a google talk/voice update.

[Q] Videoconferencing on the GTablet

So, here I am asking about this.
Okay, first, I'm not sure if this is in the right forum (maybe I should've put it in Apps?).
Please move it, okay, if it isn't.
So, as we know our GTablets have that camera on the top of the screen. So, can that be used for videoconferencing?
What app do you use and how did you get it (if it isn't on the Market)?
Does Skype work this way, maybe with it's computer version or at all?
I have zero friends at the moment who have a Skype account with a camera-toting laptop/other device (I'm basically the only one who has a laptop and the GTablet with a camera on it included into the main hardware).

You'd want to search for Fring and g tablet to see the problems people are having with video conferencing on this device. I think only Yahoo Messenger work right now.
Skype will release their video chat this year, right now I believe qik and yahoo messenger work.

dont think you can actually call someone with qik can you? i used it all the time on my droid but it was just to stream things to people. havent heard of qik being used for video conferencing other than maybe on the htc phones. someone correct me if im wrong.
See the other thread under Apps. Yahoo messenger works, but on Gtab-to-PC connection, the video on the PC end is rotated 90 degrees.

[Q] Video calls on NS

How it makes?)
Well credits give for a short and simple post
I hear lots of people have success with Tango (Free on the market) but i have not tried any such app myself yet.
I am not sure if the SNS will be able to use the Google Chat (Video) functions we see on recent tablets (ie: the Xoom, it is not a built in function of froyo (my galaxy tab)).
A good old google search or click on related one you find Tango on the market should find you similar apps (read the reviews to find user experiences).
Wish you luck, i'll let you know if i try any video apps in the future.
Cool) Thanks for your post.
Use Qik.
It works awesome and supports both FFC and rear Camera.
I use it very often!
The T-Mobile video chat app from Qik works on the Nexus S. The Nexus isn't listed as a supported phone, but I was able to receive calls from my friend's Atrix. I was also able to place calls to him . . . I think that it works better than Tango.
Skype needs to come into play. Because every other app sucks.

Video Chat Force Closes

I keep getting a force closes or my front facing camera doesn't' seem to work when i try any of the video chat applications. Tango, Qik, and Fring all don't work for me. Fring and Qik get forces closes and Tango just doesn't show any video. I have a Verizon Xperia play.
Same here can't figure out what the problem is

Yahoo Messenger or Vtok?
I tried Yahoo Messenger (with Video add-on from the market) from my Xplay to my sister's laptop and it would ring her and vice versa but would always give a message that she could not answer the call, neither video nor voice. The only video I could see is that from my Xplay's back facing camera and I could not change it to the front facing video. For a photo for my profile however the yahoo messenger took the snapshot from the front facing camera. I tried both over 3G and Wifi - if anyone had better experience please let me know so that I can see if it was some network issue or my sister's laptop issue.
Has anyone tried to use vtok from Xplay to Google video chat? Apparently it works and is free and does not require additional sign-in besides Google’s – I wonder if someone could confirm how well before I try to convince my sister to install gtalk on her laptop.

There was a leaked Skype apk with Video for android exclusive for verizon back in April - I saw people tried to modify it for other handsets and networks - I hope one of those mods will work for you given that you are on Verizon.
fring seems to have been updated and works now but nobody really uses fring that I know ..

That is a big NO. Nobody on android has an official Skype with Video. There was a leak that was specifically for the Thunderbolt (4G-LTE phone, same CPU/GPU combo I think though), but didn't come stock and is not on the market.

From my knowledge, the most prominent threads I've found on that... It was leaked for the Thunderbolt (same CPU/GPU as far as I know as Xperia Play) but it was never officially released. The modded one removed a few things that were causing device specific checks, but the app still FC'd upon launch or sign-on.

Thanks - I looked into it more now too - and saw all the problems which maybe hard to fix - just not sure if people who were trying to mod it were on Verizon or not - was hoping that if someone on Verizon could get it to work on Xplay first then it would be easier for other developers to remove network lock too. Hope Verizon is still planing to issues Skype Video for Xplay themselves soon. Or maybe Sony will be unhappy with supporting Skype now that Microsoft bought it

If u see ur pic on the bak and u can call her, then ur part works fine. She must reinstall orbupdate her yahoo. Try it on other computer and u should see the result

Skype, Hacked for Thunderbolt

I tried this out on my phone today, running the CM7 RC1, and it did not work. After entering my credentials for login, the app window minimized, then after several seconds came back up asking for the credentials again. I tried several times, making sure I was entering everything correctly. Oh well, no surprise here, nothing seems to work with this phone.

Vtok, out of the box, does not work at all for me. It gets to the contacts screen and displays all of nothing. As I understand it, those apps all require some sort of package file renaming that I am quickly growing weary of.
I appreciate the info. I'm really looking for a solid phone-to-desktop video chat client that has NOTHING to do with Yahoo--I abandoned them some time ago, and none of my contacts use them, either.
It just feels like the Google and Skype devs don't care whatsoever about our devices. I understand that the Tegra chips are sort of new in the Android world, but it feels like they are just being ignored when it comes to apps that utilize the hardware.

Unless I'm missing something here, the GTalk part of Fring doesn't allow video calls. I am completely not interested in phone-to-phone video calls, as no one I know has a phone with a front-facing camera. I'm looking for phone-to-desktop solutions, and I don't see a desktop Fring client--not that I'd accept that option because Google and Skype are fully capable of video calls. If my contacts have to sign up and install some new service then this is still a failure.

Nope. They don't need file renaming. You just need one file to be put in the framework folder and that's it.
Fyi, more phones and tablets are coming out with tegra 2 chips so what you are saying about "ignore" is a myth.

If I remember correctly, there is a file you have to copy somewhere to put in the nexus s info - you have a copy of that file and know which folder it goes in?
Heck I'll give it a try!
