Thunderbolt envy - Thunderbolt General

I went to the Verizon store today thinking that I would trade up on my HTC Incredible only to find out that Verizon got rid of the upgrade anytime ability. They said I could get a Thunderbolt, but it would cost me $600.
Oh how nice it would be to have a Thunderbolt. Anyone have any ideas to fight this with Verizon?

Adding to the envy I just got mine Saturday... Kernals.. omfg.. I'd missed them so much when I went from D1 to DX.

Seeing as promotions are not contractual, there's not really anything you can do. All I can suggest is seeing as the T-bolt is SIM based, see if you can get someone to do an insurance claim on theirs saying they lost it and buy it off of them. They might try to blank out the IMEI but the SIM should counteract that.

He would have to activate the "lost" phone to even get a SIM card, which wouldn't happen because the IMEI would already be flagged. Since this is Verizon's only 4G device, how would he go about getting a SIM card? The SIM cards are useless once they've been activated on an account and then replaced with a new one, so using the other person's old one isn't an option.

Actually if he found someone to do the lost phone deal. he could then go buy the cheapest sim-based phone outright, have it set to his account then take the sim card and put it in the t.
But the cheapest one i think is about 200.00 plus any changes it does to the contract (if any) and the at least 90.00 cost for the t's replacement. would end up costing over half the cost of the t and that's only if he gets lucky on the cost of the t

How do you then get a 4G SIM? Verizon's only other SIM based devices are all 3G "world phones" that I'm pretty sure only use the SIM cards when not in the US. Verizon's not gonna say "oh, sure, you want a 4G SIM for your Blackberry.. no problem". Unless, of course, he just never wanted to utilize LTE. I don't know enough about Verizon to be certain, but was an AT&T Mobility Resolution Specialist for a while.. and what you're suggesting would definitely not work with AT&T(given the same conditions of them only having 1 device using the new network). However, how much is an outright USB 4G Modem? NVM, that would not include voice plans, and they'd know something was up when he tried to add one to a modem LOL.. seriously, I dunno if this is possible. Even if it was, would possibly just be easier to save for a bit and just buy the phone.

You are confusing gsm and lte. They arebnot the same. DON'T DO IT! won't get you anywhere + it's insurance fraud.
Could maybe add a line to your acct. Essentially paying $240 over the course of your contract plus $250 for the phone... It's a little cheaper.

Buy a phone off craigslist or ebay and then sell your Incredible. I got $170 for my Inc with ebay's buy back program. I bought my TB off ebay for $500.

There's a thunderbolt locally on CL for 500.

You can normally talk people down a bit on CL too. So if you sell your phone for almost $200.. you're really only paying $300 for the phone which isn't bad at all with no contract!

I am not an attorney ... but this seems like quite a fraud. You have to ask (and convince) a 'friend' to lie that they lost their phone. Then you have to lie during the activation process. Seems like a heck of a conspiracy for a few hundred dollars. I would NEVER ask a friend to participate in this type of scam.
On the other hand ... I 'lost' my Thunderbolt.

Cheapest way for me to get a Nexus?

I really want the Nexus S 4G when it comes out. I don't have any upgrades available.
The full retail price I expect to be $550 through Sprint. My thought is that my best option would be to cancel my current line, pay the ETF ($160 for me right now) and then immediately get a new line and get the Nexus for $200. This would be a total cost of $360.
I guess my other option would be to add a new line to my account, get the Nexus for $200, then cancel my previous line and pay the ETF.
Any other ideas? I just want to get the Nexus for as cheap as possible.

Cheapest way is to sell EVO 4g for $200 by nexus for $399 plus tax.

The nexus will be $549.99 outright and $199.99 w/2yr agreement. Either way you go it can become rather expensive and I think the best way would to be add a line to your account and cancel the other. You will pay $200 for the nexus but you should be able to get about $250 or $300 outta your Evo as long as it's still in good condition. But that all depends apon the ETF!

This is correct.
The $399 refers to new two-year price or price with upgrade.
http://www.wirefly.com/eCommerce/phones/?&FilterByCarrier=68&mode=&
You can generally get a phone through Wirefly for the contract price without resigning or upgrading. Sell the current phone then put a few bucks more with it and you're all set.

Sprint technically won't let you ETF and sign a new contract and get the 2 year instant discount. Usually they require a 30-day period in order to be considered a "new" customer. Your best bet is to add a new line and then cancel the other line and pay ETF. You'll pay $199.99 for the new phone, $160.00 for ETF, and then sell your EVO for $250-300. Overall, shouldn't cost more than $60-70 to switch phones unless I'm missing something. You WILL be extending your time in shackles with Sprint for another 2 years though.
Myself, I plan on dropping Sprint all together (3 lines on a Family share plan) this summer and going with a local GSM provider. I'll be saving $60 a month and still get unlimited calling, txting, data. Saving $60 a month means I can subsidize myself and buy my own unlocked phones.

This is what makes XDA so good... The people.
Spotted a deal,
sharing it,
Expressed a little confusion on pricing and
some jag tries to create an illusion that he is a superior person by pointing out that this deal is because of the type of store that sells it.
REALLY about a $200 difference...
Wirefly has always offered great deals but when they can sell the same device at %20 of the price you have to wonder why VZW demands such a hefty price.
VZW must have some pretty good kickbacks now that they have there limited Data services which will definitely pull in some megabucks.
Direct locations are owned by verizon and indirect locations are not. Never goto direct stores, and they have no flexibility on pricing what so ever and generally arnt as friendly.

I went to a direct store and they matched Amazon's price on the Thunderbolt.
Enjoy your "new" phone, that's been activated on at least two other accounts...yay indirects
All indirects aren't the same. Mine isn't allowed to do that, once a phone has been activated we aren't allowed to sell it again and must return it to the manufacturer.
Well generally phones do go down in price with age, and a few months is quite a lot when it comes to technology.
I paid $250.00 used no contract.

Indirects get F'd in the butt with stupid goddamn deals like that. Indirects buy the phones at wholesale. The Thunderbolt is so expensive that the profit is crap. To upgrade someone to a thunderbolt only brings in 80 something dollars. If we discount the phone anymore than $80 we lose money.
We don't have to honor Amazon or Wireflyer deals. But when VZW pulls a deal like buy one get one free for the Droid 3 and Droid X2 we get ****ed cause we have to honor it.
A couple did that yesterday...his and hers Droid X2s. What would have been a $250 profit ended up being $50.
It's not that big of a deal for a direct store to match an Amazon deal. VZW makes tons of money from the contracts. Why do you think they give away the top of the line devices to their reps?
Indirects make money from a combination of phones and contracts. With some phones it's no big deal to give them for free but with a smartphone it's a whole nother story.

I dont think you guys are reading the fine print for wirefly and amazon...it says that if your services are suspended disconnected or you change your plan within 181 days that you will have a chargeback of $250. So lets say you disconnect your ETF would be $350 ( minus $10 for every mon of active service) plus the chargeback. I dont know about you but thats not something I want to worry about.

Sure I read the fine print. Not like I'm jumping off the unlimited data bandwagon anyways.
Apple are a bunch of assholes. The Iphone only brings in $40 of profit because Apple has their own data plan. It's no different in price and size for the customer but not for the retailer. Also their phones are a fortune to buy and we aren't allowed to sell them for a penny more than listed. We have iphones in our stores but unless the customer has their heart set on them we always steer them into an android.
Also we're not in the business of selling phones as much as we are in the business of customer service. For those that go online to buy things, they always "know better" and don't need our help.
My favorite part is when the online shopper needs to have their contacts transferred, needs their bluetooth synced to their car or has some issue with the phone; comes in the store and blows their stack when we say it's a $15 charge for any of that. Aaaaahahahaha!
In the long run it pays to give a little back to your local business.

You are in the business of "customer service" yet you will steer a customer to an android device and away from an apple device because of a higher profit margin and not necessarily what's best for the customer?
And any corporate verizon store will try and help transfer those contacts for free.

Id laugh at you while walking the hell out of your store. You obviously dont know what customer service means.

Will it work I bought one from internet?!

Hi guys, how are you doing?
Excuse me for my English
I've HTC Incredible S, I bought it from UK before a year ago.
I'm in US right now and get a simcard from At&T and paid for the Data plan but unfortunately it doesn't work!
the seller told me it should be American phone or from At&T :/
So, If I bought the Samsung Galaxy S II SkyRocket from eBay or Amazon, will it work perfectly and the data plan will work or not?!
(because I've found it from ebay $205)
I hope I can an answer for this question
Amjad
The HTC Incredible S should work with the AT&T sim. Did you take it to a AT&T store? They probably have to adjust your settings for you to use it.
If you get the Skyrocket, make sure its an AT&T version.
my Incredible S work perfect with AT&T but the data plan doesn't work because the seller told me (the phone must be from America or from AT&T) :/
So, because of that I'm asking, If I bought the Galaxy S II Skyrocket AT&T (at&t logo on the phone) from eBay, will the data plan will work or not?!
I want to change my phone because of the Data plan. I need Internet in my phone everywhere I go.
Yes the skyrocket will work on at&t its an at&t phone
I'm sorry I didn't reply to you silver03wrx
So, did you recommend me to buy it from ebay? (Here is the link)
because it's cheaper than the store + in the store I must bay $500 deposit :/
Q: If I bay the phone from the link, How much will I bay monthly?
I hope you understand me
and I hope you can help me
Depends on what phone plan you go with. Most plans for just 1 smart phone will cost around $80 to $100.
It all depends on how many minutes you want and how much internet you want (200mb or 2gb).
Just to let you know, that link you posted requires a contract. So you would likely still need a deposit to get it.

*One time activation fees applied to your first month's bill only.
Q: Does it mean that I'll pay for this just one time?
Q: when I should pay for it?
--
2/Monthly Charges† = $84.99
†These items will be billed by your carrier and do not include all fees, taxes and surcharges.
Q: Does it mean that this is my bill each month?!
When I click Next and wrote my address info, in the last there are:
NOTE: Early Termination Fee of up to $325.00 may apply.
Q: What does it mean?
Q: Will I going to pay or give them the $325.00 or what?
But in the last they ask me for the Social Security and I don't have one! I just have an US ID card.
I hope you can answer the questions, and forgive me if it's long questions
last question: What if someone (American person) give me his/her Social Security number to put it in the website to buy the phone. What will happen?!
Thank you for helping me, and i'm sorry to take your time
1) Early Termination fees apply when you cancel ur plan before it expires. Like if you cancel ur phone line within next 24 months att will charge you fees up to $325.
2) $36 You will pay only one time. You have to pay when you get new plan.
3)$84.99+tax is ur monthly bill.
4)If you use someone's social than you will need to get their info. Their info will be used instead of urs.

[Q] Before I resell my One S...questions about rebate and micro sim...

I recently bought a Galaxy Nexus, so I used my Tmo upgrade to get the One S, and now I want to turn around and sell it to subsidize my Nexus.
The $50 rebate sounds like I basically have to use it. The requirements are:
1) To qualify for this rebate card offer, you must reach the qualifying handset and Data/Messaging requirements below through T-Mobile Customer Care. Qualifying activations include T-Mobile Refurbished Device products.
2) Offer only valid on plans with a two-year contract.
3) To be eligible for the rebate card: (i) your submitted materials must be validated by T-Mobile; (ii) you must have an active account meeting the rebate eligibility requirements; and (iii) your upgraded handset must be used to complete at least one call on your extended line of service.
Here's my dilemma. Most people who will want this phone won't meet those requirements. So selling the phone with the rebate unfulfilled won't be useful to a lot of people. It also wants your customer account number, so they might do some cross checking to make sure you really bought the phone.
For me to claim it before selling it, I'll need to make a call on my line, meaning I'll need to activate the included micro sim on my account and make a call. That means I'll have to use the micro sim included.
Is it that hard to get a new micro sim? If I use it, can whoever buys the phone just walk into T-mobile and get a new one? Was hoping to sell it NIB without opening it, but now I can at least power it on and take a picture showing it working.
Anything I'm missing? Thanks for the help everybody.
I dunno about the whole rebate situation but I know you can get a micro sim cutter that turns a normal sized sim card into a micro sim. Maybe there'll be one included in the box (I dunno about that yet, I get my One S on Tuesday ) but they can be bought for pretty cheap anyway.
Any idea if I activate and use the micro sim that came with the One S...will that deactivate the old sim I'm using in my galaxy nexus?
And feel free to give your opinion...what would you rather get...a NIB never opened One S....or one that has been opened with proof of powering on?

Yes, it will. You can only have one sim activated per line.

That's what I was afraid. Tmo has made it pretty darn difficult to redeem this thing. Would have to activate micro sim (now buyer has to get one), and then I have to go get a new regular sim for my nexus. Ugh...not worth it.
I'll include all the rebate stuff and whoever gets it can try and claim it!
Go to the Galaxy Nexus and ask it there,we don't need thread like this to take up space or dial 611 and ask them and close this thread!

Bought two (one on wife's line, one on mine). So I'll sell one opened with proof of powering up, and the other completely unopened. Trying to claim the rebates seemed like too much of a pain. Maybe if the buyers get lucky they'll be able to claim it.
Thanks for all the help.
Hey I wish to buy it , how much are you looking for it ??
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
@makomek: what the heck? calm down..
@nathan118:
Regarding the sim card: There's no problem about activating the micro sim and using it in your GN as well. Sim-Adapters work fine and really don't cost much.
..........Sorry didn't notice how old this thread was lol

Upgrading to Moto G worth it?

Hi guys
Would it be worth going from Samsung Galaxy SII to a Moto. It seems like a grea but Im not sure its worth it. Is the camera better or worse then
current GSII.. Don't need it for music youtube alot..
Thx guys.
Well Moto G is an upgrade from the GSII, specially if you consider that the Motorola hardware and bechmarks are compared to the GSIII, although Moto G is 175$ cheaper. The only thing that you would miss upgrading is the camera, the GSII camera is pretty good even these days.
Touch control the only bit
It is worth it, cheap, unlocked and feels great in my hands if I could install touch control I would no miss my nexus 4 at all. The battery seems to be better than the nexus 4 too.
I say go for it.
Is ti worth paying $275 cad for it with in store activation.Activation is $35. Either that or Telus charges $60 to take device without activation.

Another Canadian user here -- depending on where you are, you can buy an unlocked Moto G from the US website (can't post a link, but google "Moto G" and it's the first or second result), as long as you can get it shipped to a US address. Then it's just a hop across the border away.
Other thing is, I don't know about Telus, but I did call Koodo when this phone came out and the rep said that if I bought the phone from them, it'd be SIM-locked to Koodo. I see that you're on Telus, but if having an unlocked device is important to you, you might want to get it elsewhere.

I bought from Koodo for $200 outright, plus tax, the week it came out. The Telus stores refused to sell outright, and when I pushed it I was told I could buy outright from the Telus website, or wait a few months. A 2nd store said they could sell outright in a week or so.
I think Google/Motorola's deal requires carriers to sell outright if asked, which is why Telus website outright buys had to be allowed.
Here in Canada we're SUPPOSED to have new regulations in place requiring carriers/sellers to unlock them on demand, more or less immediately I think, with no charge, if you buy a phone outright.
That's my read on the new regs, I'm not sure how right I am or how well that's going yet.
Anyway, it's only a few bucks to get an unlock code on EBay or wherever.

Do not get it from Telus, try going to FutureShop, Best Buy, or The Mobile Shop. Buy it from Koodo on a $150 tab, activate, get $100 in gift cards, then cancel after 30 days. It's a lot cheaper and you don't need to sign a conttract.

Neither or those stores are close but I live in a smaller town, with none of big box stores anywhere close buy.. Telus lady said either I pay $35 in store activation cause of new sim and such or $60 to leave store with phone and sim and activate at home..

Damn, I guess they have switched to in-store only pricing.
For the money that Telus wants, I would look into getting it from the US via Amazon or Motorola. It should be unlocked and you could get the GSM or international version.
I'd say the Moto G is a definite upgrade over the S2.
Been looking at ebay I may just bite the bullet and pay $200 for phone $10 for sim and activation fee. I guess Moto G is considered a contract phone as live chat says I should not pay either of those fee's.
