[Q] Is a Goldcard Required After a Successful Root? - General Questions and Answers

First, I would like to note that I searched the XDA site both with their search bar and through Google's engine, and could not locate an answer.
Today I successfully rooted my AT&T HTC Inspire 4G, using the guide on the CyanogenMod wiki, the radio image provided in attn1's kit, and the Telus Kernel to get sound back, using Ubuntu-Linux.
Of course this process involved creating a Goldcard. I used an 8GB Sandisk microSD card, pretty much identical to the one which came with the phone. Do I still need this card for anything? Now that I have root access, S-OFF and ClockworkMod running, will it be required again for any reason?
I am asking, because I would like to get a 32GB card to hold my large music library, and give this card to a friend.

I was actually wondering the same thing. I read in other threads that the best SD card to use for the root is the 8GB that came with it. I have a 32 also

No, you do not need the original card anymore.

I read just now on another thread that a Goldcard works by forcing the bootloader to ignore the CID of a ROM, thereby allowing a modified stock ROM with the incorrect CID to be flashed.
Given that, I would think that to flash back to a stock ROM I would need a Goldcard. But now that I have S-OFF, is that CID-checking feature no longer present?

switch 1 touch root to gold card method

ok i have my mem card with my cyan's update, compatible themes and so on... however when i was showing a friend what i did he clicked nandroid backup on my phone so it replaced my original rom.
i wanted to go through regular rooting method just for the heck of it cuz i have some extra mem cards to play with and figured i can just run nandroid backup to have the cyan and one touch method phone from one memory card, then wipe and use my other roms with whatever else on on the other memory cards to switch to anything at anytime and have access to the stuff i dont have being stuck with cyan and the 1 touch method.
My problem--- on step 3 when im using sappimg.zip to flash it says Model ID incorrect! Update Fail!
i followed the instructions to a T but im thinking this may have to do with the fact that my mt3g is already rooted.... should i go back and make the goldcard again or is my problem as i suspect.... and is their a resolution????
Thanks for your help.
your gold card isnt working if it says model id incorrect. that is the precise purpose of the gold card.
if you already flashed a rooted rom you dont need to use the gold card method.
you just need to use the flash recovery program to get your modded recovery image, and from there instead of updating a rom, you need to update the SPL to one of the engineering ones found on Amon_ra's thread called Magic HBoot
good luck
Wow, thanks for the quick response. That makes perfect sense I guess I was just worrying myself. Thanks again
One-click FTW!
The one-click method is far superior and more efficient. I've used that even still for 3 of my Android devices. Otherwise, my original G1 was rooted via "old school" tactics. Downgrade, UPGRADE, downgrade, etc.

[Q] Inspire 4G Root

Can this unit be rooted using the same Desire HD methods? i.e. - Downgrade, root, and flash new ROM?
My assumption is that it's basically the same hardware, no?
Thank you.
attn1 will be releasing rooting details on Sunday
I hope he has root already :-D
I am not yet an Android user. Will be getting Inspire on Monday. But I was wondering if people think it will be possible to unlock the tethering function after rooting and junk like that? I still have the unlimited data plan so that would be clutch.
Thanks.
You should be able to do this even without root by sideloading (using the sideload wonder machine) a third-party app
junefabrics.com/android/index.php
Very cool, will probably be using that then.

That program only supports USB and BT tether though, which kinda sucks. No wifi = fail

What exactly does that mean? That you have to connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable in order to tether?

Yes, that will work, but you won't have sound when you're done. The kernel drivers are slightly different and we don't have proper source code yet. Also, we want to flash back our radio.
In the meantime, we can use the kernel supplied in the at&t inspire with the DHD roms.
Also, the DHD ENG Hboot maybe be a little squirrely with our radio. We had some oddness, so I don't recommend flashing that.
Update: DHD ENG hboot issue closed - it was another problem. The DHD/MT4G eng Hboot is fine. I don't recooment that newbs flash this - it gives you nothing you can't already do and there is a real possibility of bricking the phone flashing it if you don't know what you're doing.
I am working on a kit that will have everything needed to get root and radio s-off, including scripts to make this a bit easier. You can do this on Windows (provided you have installed the right USB drivers), OSX or Linux.
Note: A gold card *WILL* be needed. I can't include that in the kit. You can save yourselves some time by looking up how to make a gold card and getting that done ahead of time. You will thank yourself for it.

Researching it now..
Update:
looks pretty simple.
Will the gold card need to be the card that I use for the phone after I root or can I just use any micro SDHC card and then replace it when I'm done?

I think its just to root the phone with and that's all.

Props to attn1 for getting the inspire rooted this quickly. I got my phone on monday and by using his method (and his hours of help) it was rooted by early wednesday morning.
Now I am impatiently waiting for a compatible CM7.
Is there a minimum size for the sd card for gold card? Can the sd card be used for normal usage afterwards?
My luck will be that none of my 3 micro sd cards will work for a gold card.
really not looking forward to a gold card method. Although its not difficult might hold out for a version without the hassle.
I am looking how to do a Gold Card and I keep seeing that you need the phone in order to do it. Is that true? ATTN1 said get it done ahead of time, so can you do it without the phone?
I don't really care so much about custom rom's, all I want is wifi hotspot and hsupa being enabled.
Hope this isn't too complicated. I plan on buying the phone, trying it out stock, and if I decide to keep it, root it for the 2 features above.
Anyone know if this rooting methode is going to be compatible with the telus HTC Desire HD?

In looking at the process that attn1 describes, it should work with Telus, however, you would probably need to flash the Telus kernel instead of the Inspire kernel and use the Telus radio instead of the Inspire radio just to be safe.
It looks like the kit that attn1 is putting together will have specific pieces for the Inspire. You may want to visit and search the DHD forum for rooting specifics about the Telus DHD.

[Q] Gold Card and micro sd

hello
I just bought a 32 gb card for my inspire 4g, the problem is that i had use the 8 gb original card to create my gold card and now i want to know if i can install a rom from my 32 gb who is not a gold card or if i absolutely need the 8 gb to install roms.
i dont want to turn the 32 gb into a goldcard, i am afraid i could spoil it. anyone tried to create a coldcard with a 32 gb and succeed ? the card is from the brand kingston
You don't need the goldcard anymore. Hopefully ever.....considering HTC CEO statement today regarding bootloaders. The goldcard was only required during the initial downgrade to obtain s-off.
You can load your new card up with roms and flash away.
My opinion is to not turn that 32gb card into a goldcard, cause that'd be overkill x8! You actually shoulda got a 4 gig card for the goldcard, but that's alright tho. Since you already made a goldcard, you don't need to make another one. If you have to use a goldcard again, which is very highly doubtful, you already have one. Like newter55 said, you can load up and flash away to your hearts content. Now, I'm not sure when, or even if, our bootloader will be unlocked. However, if they say ours will get unlocked, then the earliest to expect that would be when we get our official gingerbread update.

[Q] Flashed the wrong PG58IMG.zip

Very much a noob when it comes to Android phones and I have been working through the process to get a custom Rom on my HTC Sensation. I started following the instructions in this thread [Guide] to Installing S-off, Unlocking, ClockWork, Root, SuperCID & S-on and successfully completed step one, achieving s-off on the phone.
In step two things went badly wrong. Following the instructions I downloaded clockwork recovery and copied the PG58IMG onto my sd card, at least I thought I did. What I now realize is that since I had been doing a lot of reading and research on this topic before attempting it for the first time I had downloaded several relevant files in advance, one of which is the PG58IMG file from this thread [DEV] HTC Sensation & HTC Sensation XE firmware | Partitions Info | [01.03.2012 and it was this file that I put on the sd card. Obviously not what I should have flashed at all. Especially since it seems that the tool which would help me out of this mess is the one I just failed to install properly.
So the situation is that the phone loops constantly on startup when booting normally. When I boot into HBOOT with the SD card in it tries to update again and when that fails, gives no option but to reboot. If I remove the SD card then I get access to the following screen -
-Revolutionary-
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.27.1100
RADIO-10.14.9035.01_M
eMMC-boot
and below the options -
HBOOT
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
FACTORY RESET
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC
I have tried connecting the phone to my computer at this stage but I cant get FASTBOOT USB and adb cant find any devices either. Am I completely stuffed at this point? If not, if anyone can help me out with some instructions on what to do here I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks,
Webba
So have you tried to go into recovery once your in bootloader ? what happens then ?
If you get the correct files onto your sd card via a card reader, then put it in the phone, bootloader should attempt to update the new correct files.
I have tried going into recovery, it comes up with a pic of a phone with a green circle, followed by a phone with a red triangle, followed by going into the boot cycle. This is with the sd card removed. Am I right in thinking that if I get the right files onto the card and then run recovery with the sd card in it will work?
If you run BOOTLOADER then it should do... Make sure you remove the old PG58IMG before putting the new one on.
Thanks so much, I will try it as soon as I can. I assume I will find the right stock rom somewhere on these forums?

you will find anything and everything you will ever need on these forums
My Sensation was purchased in Hong Kong, after looking at the lists at shipped-roms this one - RUU_Pyramid_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.35.707.1_Radio_10.43a.9007.00U_10.51.9007.27_M3_release_198358_signed.exe
seems to be most likely correct. Can anyone more knowledgeable confirm this? I would hate to flash the wrong thing again.
did you successfully get superCID ? if so i do believe that you can flash any RUU / ROM
Im not 100% on this as im still new to the sensation myself, But im sure thats the whole point in having SuperCID
Unfortunately I dont have superCID. I was following the instructions pretty slavishly and the superCID setup is one step after clockwork
Is there a way to get superCID in my phones current state? From what I am reading I need it to at least hook up to adb which it is not doing at the moment so I assume I just have to get the right onto the sdcard to have any chance of it working, right?
Yes, You need clockwork mod before SuperCID. Have you tried to re download CWM and put it on sd card ? It could have just been a bad download, it happens to us all.
Download it again, Remove the previous PG58IMG from SD Card via a card reader (if you have one) Put the new PG58IMG on SD card. Pull battery out, Put SD Card back into the phone, put battery back in and boot into bootloader (volume down + Power)
Bootloader should automatically find the PG58IMG and ask if you want to update it, Select yes and theoretically you should be fine..
EDIT: Use this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=706572&d=1314848127
Yeah, I have re-downloaded CWM and made sure it is the right one I have to wait until the shops open here so I can pick up a micro sdcard reader but I will try the new CWM first, and if that fails then I will try the stock rom. Am I right in thinking that neither of this is likely to make the situation worse, even if they dont work?
No providing bootloader still works everything is fix-able..
We aint messing with bootloader so u will be ok.
Cant believe you dont have a card reader lol....
lol, up until today the only thing I needed to be able to read micro sd cards was the phone. Well, I will be better prepared next time anyway.
The thing that had me worried is that since I originally didn't realize PG58IMG was not a unique file name I am almost certain that the one on my sd card at the moment is not even CWM at all but one of the updated firmware ones I mentioned in the OP that I very stupidly mistook for it. It feels like a really serious mistake to make, but happy to know that if the boot loader is working then it should be fixable. I wasn't sure even about that.
I think the PG58IMG is a unique code that the phone reads and recognises as something to be flashed / updated.
Ive seen various things CWM / Firmwares / Updates with the same PG58IMG title. so maybe youre right and the original file you downloaded wasnt the correct one.
Dont panic, Keep calm, Ask questions, Get answers...... This is the only way to avoid a bricked phone
Yeah, you've saved me a lot of stress already. Ill be back in a few hours with the results of the next attempt. Thanks again!
Ok, the news is not great. I got hold of a micro sd adaptor so I could plug it into my computer and removed the old PG58IMG. I put the correct one (downloaded from this thread) on the sd card and rebooted the phone into HBOOT. It recognizes the file on the sd card but gets a cid fail and there is no option but to reboot which goes into the boot cycle.
Whats worse is that doing this apparently fries the sdcard. I tried it twice, because I am sucker for punishment and in both cases the sdcard is unreadable afterwards.
Maybe I should try and explain more clearly that I am now sure the PG58IMG that I first put on the card and flashed I am sure is the Firmware from 3.32.401.x & 3.32.401.10x RUU from this thread. It appeared to successfully update before rebooting the phone into its current state, causing me to realize I had the wrong file. I dont understand enough to know exactly whats going on but it seems pretty bad. Do you think I should try a 3rd sdcard with the Shipped ROM on it or is there something else I should do at this point?
Edit - The second sd card wasn't fried after all, but I am still searching for a shipped rom that isnt in .exe format, since the phone isnt connecting to the computer by usb at all right now. Anyone know where I can find one?
Edit - Ok, now I have fastboot usb which means I can use .exe shipped roms. adb devices cant find the phone though which means I cant superCID it which means I still have to find the right ROM. Since I brought the phone from HK I am trying all the asian ones first. Anyone know specifically which file at shipped-roms.com is the right one?
You flashed firmware for ics rom, so the stock rom won't boot and you have bootloop. If you flash the 3.12 firmware ( works for both ics and gb) that will resolve the loop and you will be able to continue with the guide and flash cwm.

Hey Stringer7, do you mean this Firmware from 3.12.401.2/102 RUU available in the same thread? I will download it and give it a try.
edit - Gave it a try, I get CID incorrect from it too. Seems like CID incorrect for everything I try to flash atm.
What is your CID ??
Unfortunately I dont know. I didn't know I needed it before I started and now since the phone isn't talking to adb I cant use it to find out. All I know is that I bought the phone from Hong Kong about 6 months ago. Is there a way to check the CID with the phone the way it is now?

[Q] Root on 2.02.0002 data question.

I've read elsewhere that I can root my phone and keep S-ON by flashing 4EXT Touch recovery and then from recovery mode installing su-3.1.3.zip to apply root and superuser to my stock ICS ROM. My first question is does this work and is there a guide for it I missed.
The second issue is, in the same thread I read it would wipe my data and apps. This is fine if it's just music and pictures etc but I'm wondering will I keep contacts etc in my SIM card? If I will, that's great.
Thanks for reading!
1st question, I only read and didn't tried it out. So I have no comment.
2nd question, just sync ur contact with Google. Just save what u wan on the sd card and back it up in ur PC.
Sent from my HTC Desire S
1st question: yes, but only if you're htcdev unlocked
2nd question: that is part of the htcdev unlock process. I *think* it won't touch your sim card. Either way, you can always remove it when doing the actual unlock from within fastboot.
