So what to do with you old Android - Thunderbolt General

So you bought a Thunderbolt. Your now a second generation Androidian. What to do with your old phone. I would like to hear your ideas.
I stripped my HTC Incredible down and created another gmail account for it. Then I installed an app called SECuRET SPY CAM. Made a mount with dedicated power. Now I have a home security system. Works better than great. Takes a pic when it senses image change and 2 secs later I'm looking at your mug on my Thunderbolt.
Yes I made that word up Androidia. Put it in WOWWIKI.

I let my sister borrow my Motorola Droid1 to see if she would enjoy having Android over Blackberry. Once she returns it i have no idea what to do with it.

sold it on swappa for 290

I'm keeping my N1 as a backup GSM phone. I'm trying to find a buyer for my G2 though.

I put my old droid on ebay. Someone asked me what is root, cause im selling it rooted Im not even gonna respond to that question, cause i don't think he needs my phone

My 50 year old mother is using my old dinc with skyraider sense she picked it up fast I was impressed

I think we have a new motto...
"XDA... A community of elite hackers converting your $400 cell phone into a $19 webcam!"
Classic.

Haven't even moved over to my TB yet and when I do the Dinc will stay as a back up phone for a while.
I'm getting ready to sell my Eris as it was previously used as a back up.

I'm going to hang on to my Eris for a while. I am turning it into a media player/spare GPS/game system for the kids. I am keeping my nand backups so I can get back to fully functional within minutes if needed. Also, while it is in "media/kids" mode I have a different SD card in it so the kids cant screw up too much.
Too bad it won't do Angry Birds...

Thanks for the response on what to do with the old phone. I just have a feeling someone will show up with an idea to make us all facepalm if we sold our old phone.
Thanks for leaving the thread up XDA. I will be back from to check for more ideas.

Using mine as a mp3 player. Would love to see a rom that centered around mp3 playing. Turn off all the other features and increase battery life. Any ideas?

Well you can cut off most everything by just making the gpu be off and wifi stay off and sticking to airplane only mode. If you do all that then what else is consuming battery? I'd assume most apps wouldn't try to update in airplane mode, and you can uninstall any apps you don't need since you are focusing on it being an mp3 player right? Seems pretty simple to me, what other features would you like a rom to have?

CookieMan is making one for the Eris. He is killing radios and such...his focus is speed.
BTW, what is the best Nav software that stores the maps locally?

Sadly, I dropped my turbo'd Dinc on the way to a meeting and shattered the screen. 1 day before the release of the Thunderbolt. Considering I was eligible for an upgrade the timing couldn't have been better but I loved my Dinc..

Thoughts so far

So far I love the phone. The feel and weight of the phone just seems better then my Captivate(which I gave to my wife). After not getting data on the phone unless I had WiFi on kind of sucked, but if you make a new network. You will be able to gain data back.
The only thing I am not liking is when I set up my HTC sense with Facebook, it put all my friends from facebook into my contacts list in my phone. I do not want all my friends on the list. I have tried and figure out how to delete from the list but cant figure it out. Anyone know how?
I also side loaded a few apps using the SLW program, once you download HTC sync on your computer it was easy.
I cant wait until this phone gets rooted so I can go in and change some stuff around, like ringtones. You can have custom ringtones when the phone is not plugged in to the USB but once you plug the USB in, it reverts back to the stock ringtones because it thinks shuts off your SD Card. Well you know what, I guess I can have the option to only have it charge will plugged in. That might work.
Other then that me loves the phone. Glade my wife had an upgrade so I could get the phone for $79.99 from Costco and a free charger with it. She loves my old Captivate so I was like hell ya ill trade ya!
Ha I love it...got a feeling alot of wives will be getting a captivate tommorow

I have the Evo for sprint which should be similar. Open your People/contacts app, hit menu, and you should see an option that says 'View'. Select view to choose which contacts you want displayed and deselect your Facebook account.

Ok so in the people and contacts it has my correct contacts. What am talking about is when you look at the phone on the homescreen you see the button that says phone. If you click on that it will show every one of my Facebook friends, even the ones they I dont have in my contact list. I dont want them there.
I haven't mentioned to my wife yet... she's gonna wonder why the hell I'm getting up early on a Sunday morning, probably think I'm having an affair, lol.

You are, with the Inspire 4G. hahaha
I dont regret it for a second, yeah no Real 4G but we have root, roms and radios NOW.
Also, for those that just want to install apps and leave the phone stock you can go to this thread created by me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943174
The phone feels so polished and the screen is awesome, no Craptivate screen but it will turn heads.
We have accomplished so much in so little time.
Thanks to all the devs and porters out there, this is already a more than worthwhile device and for the price you can not beat it.
Atrix is just a bad memory of Motoblur hell, good luck trying to even root that damn thing.. hahaha

Ok I know what you're saying, and I didn't even realized my phone did that until you just mentioned it. I didn't see a way to get rid of them either.
If this is bothering you because you have to scroll through so many more names to get to the contact you want to dial, have you tried the t9 smart dialer feature? Lets say you want to dial 'John', instead of scrolling all the way down to his name, just spell out his name via t9 (5 for 'j', 6 for 'o', 4 for 'h', etc). The contacts that match what you're typing will appear and you don't have to scroll through all the names. My Evo and other HTC sense phones do this ( stock android doesn't, but you can download other dialers in the market that do). If you already knew this and just don't want the names to appear, can't help you there.

Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
i went to check this out in the store today. a few thoughts
-size is great. i compared it to my nexus one w/seidocase and it is only slightly larger... like less than a .25" larger in width and length
-weight is great. very comparable to n1 w/case
-sense 2.0 looked pretty slick.
-very fast... zero lag.
-my only stickler was the screen. i could see the "grid" dots on the display unit. is this typical of slcd?
Love it already and havent had it 5 hours yet, beats my old htc surround hands down.
This kicks the captivates ass all around, even unrooted with stock rom. Soooo glad I pulled the trigger... nice to have a decent exchange email client as part of the basic package (sorry touchdown, but the integration is a big plus... I hated the separate address books).
The more I use my phone the more I realize everything works and works well.
Have installed pretty much everything there is and it plays or runs them without a hiccup.
Obviously the only apps it will not run are the ones that require root. My plan is to do this very soon so I can take advantage of those as well.
Every single game I've installed is smooth with no lag.
Emulators work with zero issues, my plan is to try the the psx one next.
You can not measure the battery life right away, it has to get used to a few charges first. See the Desire HD forums and they will say the same.
I've made some calls and can say that it sounds great, I've tried both the loudspeaker and the ear speaker and both sound fine to me.
Obviously the small speaker will not be that loud especially at first. Still planning to use DSP Manager to see if it fixes it.
I've still to try out the gps while moving in the vehicle as well.
Build quality is very satisfying and is what's expected from HTC.
Where I had trouble getting 3G I am now getting a constant H+ according to the phone.
What else can I say I made an excellent choice and with the Sideload Wonder Machine, root, radio and custom ROMs there's room to make this phone even better with those options.

I don't miss my iPhone ⁴ not a single bit!!!

When you came from iOS then switch to Android you are going to miss iOS because you are use to it, I almost returned this infuse 4g, but I gave it a shot, when you learn to use this thing it gets better and better every single day, customization is like never ending, when you press a link you have a choice which browser to choose, when you want to call, you can choose to use your minutes or use your data using google voice, and more Dev team case speed the OS it self, + more appetite to choose from and loving Amazon giving a way a paid apparently for free everyday, 4'5 screen yes browsing is a breeze remember 80% of using your smartphone is for browsing yahoo.

I can upgrade right now but I think I will wait until the galaxy s 2 comes out or the iPhone 5 to see if its worth it then.
You haven't seen anything yet.
I agree. I was a longtime iphone user who finally made the switch to android with the Infuse. At first I was missing certain aspects of my jailbroken iPhone 4, but it took less than a week until I was ready to sell it. I love the 4.5" screen. There is really only two things I miss about my iphone. The text with the retina display was amazing and if I had that on my 4.5" screen I would be in heaven. I also like the way iOS formats emails a lot better. Emails on the infuse are just a lot harder to view as u have to pan around them. I have tried a couple alternate email clients, but still haven't found one I care for.

I agree too much email on phone sucks battery life, unless you do the scheduled pushing, I quit my yahoo and use gmail I think 1 email is better than protecting 4 emails.
The only thing I want is the "3g unrestrictor apps" on iOs where you can fake apps that can be use only on wifi, unrestrict it making the apps think you are connected on wifi where in fact you are using 3g.

Ya the ability to change notification sound out of the box is nice compared to ios but I really like the juggling especially for the ringtones. My last phone was a ipjone 3g. It's not a comprable phone, but just the OS alone has been enough to make me happy. With the added speed upgrade, it blows the iphone 3g out of the water.

I agree, I went from iPhone 4 to Android. The only thing I would like to see is better battery life and build quality out of the Android phone line. It always seems like my iPhone lasted forever, and was so rugged, and Android phones feel so plasticy and cheap, and the battery goes soooo fast.
With that said, iOS is like going back in time when using after Android. Sure Android has it's issues, but remember it's only 2 years young, so it's to be expected. I love things like how it adds facebook feeds to a user contact card, and little things like turning the phone upside down to mute a call. Really stuff that just works... it's great.
Welcome from another iPhone 4 convert, hehe

I agree better battery life I can over with that. One thing I hate with infuse takes 3-4hrs to charge on stock charger, I'm using 1amp charger now and still just a little bit under 3hrs. Hope I can find a 1hr fast charger. I bought an extra battery and deskcharger hope it solve my issue, I always stream Justin.TV movies lol

HAHA, you're funny and your post cracked me up with each sentence. I love it!
When a call comes in, flip the phone over onto it's face-down, and the phone will stop ringing. You'll also notice that if the phone is ringing and you pick it up to see who it is, it detects it's being fondled and turns down the ringer since you obviously know you have a call at that point. There's also a purse mode, so if you have it in a purse or pocket, it knows, and will crank up the ringer on it's own.
I too continue to discover cool stuff.... there's really no central repository for "cool stuff" but rather a bunch of different things around the net you can search for that'll give some cool tips and tricks. Android is fast evolving, so each tick they come out with gives a few more cool features. I bought this phone along with 2 friends, and I'm always hearing "did you see it can do this..." so as they find things they let me know. It's amazing how much they packed into an OS... makes iOS seem primitive, at best, hehe.
Chumley wouldn't be a good fit for a smartphone, he loves fried chicken and the screen would look like it'd gotten deep fried, hehe. I've never seen someone actually use a Chumley reference on here.... kudos! hehe
I went from an iPhone 4 to a Motorola Atrix for a little over a month. Couldn't stand Motoblur so I went back to an iPhone 4. I had a Captivate but didn't like a few things about it. I sold my iPhone 4 for $450 and bought my Infuse of some guy on Craigslist for $400.
I'm loving my Infuse so far, the size has really grown on me. I don't think I can ever get a phone under 4" again. Email sucks on Android if using email other than Gmail, but there are so many things that I enjoy on my Infuse more!

Congrats on the migration. It's funny how many people did the same as you, went Atrix because of the marketing hype. I have never personally used it, but I haven't been a Motorola fan since they killed the quality of production after StarTac.
i too agree the size is amazing. I always said anything more than 4" would be too big but now that I have a 4.5" it really is nice. I find that I text\web browse 95% of the time, and rarely use the phone, so the screen size is the #1 feature.
Regarding mail, I had the same sentiments as you, but quickly realized I was wrong. The phone has activesync built in, so first thing I did was delete the gMail client and use the mail app. You'll need an email that supports it (gmail does using exchange server "m.google.com"), or there's a plethora of other non-gmail providers that do it as well. I used to use GoDaddy's Secureserver.net hosted email, but they charge 30.00 a year for hosted IMAP, and $50 a year for activesync, and to me that's just not worth the cost. So I switched all of my domains over to Google Apps. They host your email (you pay $10 a year for the domain to godaddy) then google hosts the activesync email server, and the best part is it's FREE. It's far better than my iPhone mail experience, you just have to have a little know how to set it up, modify MX records, but google's help section makes it super easy to feel your way through it.
Best of luck.

Alright guys, I just saw pictures of the new Droid Bionic and I gotta say.....WOW. I am really blown away and I think I really want this, plus, moto said there going to unlock bootloaders (not quite sure why everyone forgot this http://pocketnow.com/android/motorola-promises-android-bootloader-unlock-in-late-2011). What do you guys thing? This phone is one hell of a beast but I also am in love with sense but blurs been winning me over. Thoughts?!?!?
2 fascinates and 2 droid x's later i can say if it aint stock android or htc sense i dont want it.
If it has unlocked bootloader so u can run cm7 then thats a different story but dont hold ur breath.
It's all personal preference. If you want to shell out the money for a bionic go ahead. I am quite happy with my thunderbolt. I really don't see how my experience can be improved much. But then again personal experiences vary.

My expierence with the TB has been great but im definitly worried about our longevity because every time i think about it, the TB just seems like a test bed device for 4G. Ill be honest, the only thing holding me back is HTC Sense because I love the heck out of HTC Sense but I really need that next gen power.
I say give the Bionic a look. The hardware looks great and the new Blur is actually really good.

Thats moto official right there, of course there going to do it (Okay I do realize i sound pretty nieve right there), but still Verizon confermed that they have no problems with letting unlocked bootloaders on their networks so I dont see why it wouldnt happen
I don't think I would believe the "no-locked-bootload" bit until I see it.
No Brainer
HTC Thunderbolt
1) When we need to have conference call we use anyone else's phone because the external speaker on the TB sounds like crap.
2) The ear speaker is so high pitched and scratchy sounding it actually hurts!
3) Mine has a bad head phone amp. (can't add base).
4) battery lasts 4 hours.
5) Takes forever to find satellites.
6) Random reboots.
7) Who needs sense when 3rd party launchers and widgets are better and more configurable.
I could keep going but you're probably bored already. The only thing good about the HTC is it's looks. I'd go for the Moto or wait for a dual core Samsung.
@mcargil05
It sounds like you've had nothing but problems. I am surprised you haven't traded the TB for something else. My speakerphone & ear speaker are no better or worse than any other phone I've used. When I stream music over audiogalaxy thru my car aux port, it sounds as good as my ipod. If your phone amp is bad, that should be covered by warranty & you should be able to swap phones. If you're only getting 4 hours between charges, that's definitely a hardware issue or bad battery, or both. I got 7+ hrs on stock before flashing a battery-sipping kernel (16-20 hrs now). GPS lock in 3-7 secs depending on whether I'm indoors. I had a couple of random reboots right after flashing GB-based rom, but nothing since. It's true that Sense is kinda "take it or leave it", not a lot of customizing options there. But I think it's pretty good for a stock app & it does what I need it to do. I used Launcher Pro on my Captivate & Nexus One, and I don't miss it enough to ditch Sense. Some ppl absolutely despise Sense, so there will always be demand for alternative launchers & widgets. Good luck with your TB, if you decide to keep it.

I would trade my Bolt for a Bionic IF the bootloader is unlocked. And I wouldn't be an early adopter on the Bionic. I would only buy it after CM7 is stable on the phone. And by that time... Kal El Tegra 3 phones will be out nearly (they're due by X-Mas, and the Bionic isn't due out until August).
I would say, if you have a Thunderbolt, it's probably best to wait until Xmas/CES time the end of this year/early next year. There are going to be some crazy phones out in 6-9 months from now.

I am good with the Thunderbolt until early next year when we have a new crop of phones. I wanted to the Moto, but was on blackberry and didn't want to wait until the moto dropped when we kept getting pushed back to get 4g and Android goodness.
The battery could be better but I have 3 spare batteries and an external charger for them so it is all good.
Personally the screen is the killer for me. The crappy light leakage, terrible in bright lighting, and don't get me started on the spot lights. Terrible blacks. I bought a $4300 65" plasma to get an amazing picture, why would I not want that kind of picture on my phone if possible.
I dont see how comparing a $4300 dollar TV and a phone makes any sense.

It doesn't. He just wanted to brag about wasting money.

People still buy plasma tv?
It's one of the new 3D plasmas with built-in ps3 AND xbox, and it also makes bacon. Because everything is better with bacon.

Love my TBolt. Everything has been great with it so far. All the whining you are hearing are from people who haven't tinkered with their phone. Things like low battery life can be solved in a matter of minutes and a google search. I am now going on 10 hours with 65% battery left, which is better than my old X.
Plus I got it on a 2 year plan so 1. I will hopefully be grandfathered into 4G and 2. Will have plenty of time to see how new phones are going to develop before jumping right into them (Kind of like what I did with my TB).
I see nothing but good for the TB for at least another year. Soon the RIL will be released alongside of Gingerbread with 4G speeds. Come on you can't go wrong.

thubderbolt best 4g Verizon phone?

ok guys i need ur gelp, i only got a 1/2 hour to decide. i found a great deal on a tb but i dont know if i should get it.
are you guys happy with the phone?
would u get a diff 4g phone
how is the batt?
a list of pros n cons would be great
might buy it for 175 used. i got burn with the fascinate and i dont wanna do the same.
tge reason i want a 4g phone is to lock in unlimited 4g before the limited plans get in.
Best 4g lte phone imo. Just make sure to get an extended battery down the road.
Great speeds
OK screen
Great dev support
Not so great battery life on standard battery

Get the damn TB. Put some BAMF on it. Enjoy.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
I can usually get from 8-16 hours from the thunderbolt on the standard battery, depending on use of course. I am sitting in wifi mostly, running das Bamf 1.8.6 right now. Over the weekend, I got 28 hours on a single charge on 3G, but I didn't use it much at all - just emails, a few websites but there was about an hour of pandora in there.
If you're interested in rooting/ROMing, I think the TB is definitely the best choice
I thought the Samsung phone was pretty good. Ofcourse I am not sure if it is worth the extra money, it probably sells for more than TB.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Not saying this cause I own one, thunderbolt hands down. The development community alone should be enough to make it the most appealing LTE device.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I was wondering the same thing. Hardware wise the charge is superior but developer wise the thunderbolt has more support. I bought my tbolt used in like new condition for $350. The price jacked up once the tiered data plans were leaked. At $175 check to make sure the esn is clean and then go for it!

Samsung and I are not friends. Innovative products, poor product support. Their way of fixing things is releasing a new device. This has been my experience anyway.

Not to be rude but no peons or cons list?
And as far as you guys know what exactly is grandfather in?
If I have unlimited data and I choose to upgrade later to a 4g non contract would I keep unlimited?

No, hahah sorry kinda stressed out abou it for some reason
I am getting it just in case they say u can't be grandfathered in for the 4g. I don't even have 4g here but 4g is the future and I only pay 10 for unlimited ( I got this crazy promotional deal last November) n I don't wanna lose it when I do get 4g around here.
I have to say I'm impressed with the Thunderbolt, and I'm not an Android guy. Well Im totally an Android guy, now. If I had gotten any other phone available currently, I would have passed it off in a week.
The thunderbolt's quality combined with developer support and the online community just form a smartphone-holy trinity.
I have an iPad 2, iPad, iPhone 4, and Thunderbolt. The short battery life the first three days was a con. Then I started customizing my settings, and about 3 hours after ordering an extended battery I realized "Oh ****, I've been pushing this dude pretty hard for 10 hours."
Needless to say, I only use it when I'm going to be out all night and she's pretty enough that I may not charge it first thing in the morning.
Rooted Thunderbolt on BAMF Sense 3.0 RC 4 with MR2 radio and latest dreamKernel.
By the way, I see you're in Queens. I work in Long Island City and get great 4g speeds. About 25 down and 5 up.

you keep unlimited as long as you keep your plan (3g/4g doesn't make a difference), they have said that as long as you are unlimited with smartphone data, you are good (according to engadget). If you change your base plan in any way, then you will lose the unlimited data.
Thunderbolt is a great phone with minor hiccups stock. Charge has better battery life and a better screen. Thunderbolt has a lot better dev support as do most htc products. Thunderbolt comes with 40gb total memory, not sure about the Charge.
Every Charge I've played with has just dragged. I attribute it to the way Samsung distributed the ram. Their battery life sucks too. I can get 2 days out of my TB. I've used a Charge that regularly loses 40% in 3 hours.

Why do HTC phones have better dev support, just curious? This is my first Android phone, so forgive me if I am missing something obvious here, could have googled it, etc. Thanks!

I love my thunderbolt. I bought it used for $350 went to verizon to activate told him it was used and he asked if I wanted insurance. I said sure. Had an issue that was within 14 days of purchase and they gave me a new in box. Yeah I know people will ***** I screwed verizon but people have a job and should be trained. Since I have had no problems, love the Roms put out and 4g is great.
I can't believe that nobody had mentioned that the.TB is the only verizon phone with voice and simultaneous data thanks to its dual antennas.

I like my TB, but this is my first Android phone so I can't really compare. People have gone over the pros for the phone, and I agree with them. Here are a couple of potential cons. #1 is the phone sound quality. I personally don't find it that great, and to me Verizon iPhone (my wife has one) sounds better. I thought the phone amp was such a basic part that it should never be an issue, but surprisingly it is an issue for me. #2 is the 4g battery drain bug. The good thing is that not everyone has it, and I hope MR2 radio finally fixes it (testing that right now). Other than that it has been a great phone for me, and I am definitely enjoying the dev support, thanks to the devs and people offering help on this forum!

It will sound better if you pull the kickstand out, even if that's a little inconvenient.

[Q] For all of you advanced Nexus users..

I will be receiving my package containing the Nexus S tomorrow from Fedex. I am eager and super anxious and just want to sleep this day away.
I went from a Palm Pixi to this Nexus S, and was curious as to what exciting things should I do within the first hour of receiving this incredible phone? Any "neat" or "cool" tricks besides rooting?
TIA <3
You're going to be looking for all sorts of excuses to play with it, just to look at the screen. I can't think of anything specific to the Nexus personally, but I don't even have mine rooted because it's just how I want it out of the box.
Tapatalk and Words with Friends are great excuses to play with your phone.

The one thing you are missing is the pre 2.2.3 colors. It is worth it to flash a kernel to revert the colors or one that supports voodoo.

This... I haven't gotten around to root my phone because it has all i ask of it right off the box. It's fast, reliable, and after the first week, i noticed my NS going from 11-13 hours of moderate use with still 10%-20% battery left.
The battery does start off dying quickly. After a couple days of a full charge to fully drained the battery life gets really good.

You should go to the congress bridge and take some videos of the bats and then hit 6th for some night life pictures!
Honestly the ns4g is pretty much like most other androids. Except samoled screen and vanillia android, IMO. One thing you should have on hand is dsp manager for sound as its alittle lite in that area.
