{Think Tank} Internal SD full use - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

So after looking around it does appear that the SGS 4G does acctually include 16g internal storage. For what ever reason Samsung or T-mobile thought it would be nice to hide the storage from us and only allow us to access 500mb for apps.
This thread is here to discuss possible ways to open it up or unlock the rest of the storage like the vibrant. After all this phone was supposed to be an upgrade.

Wow

this makes this THE phone to hack... if you can unlock that you would be the FRIGGIN MAN! LOL

On a temp-rooted and pretty well stuffed SGS4G showing 52.93 MB "Application storage" "Available Space" in the "SD card and phone storage" settings panel

Has someone examined the "cracked" phone to confirm that there truly is a 16 GB flash on the board?

I will also donate to anyone who can manage to unlock this internal storage space.

Agreed i'll donate as well, its unlock the remaining 15GB's or back to TMobile it goes, POS crippled vibrant 2. WTF were they thinking (shoulda looked at "about phone" on the display model /sigh).

I would also donate.. if this is true..

I will donate 20 for storage and 20 when clockwork gets on the list.

I'm looking forward to hearing a good news from you before this coming Sunday. I will return this damn 4g phone this weekend due to lag of internal storage.
I'm just thinking, is it possible to partition the internal storage, which may open up the blockage if in fact the internal storage itself is 16 gb.
Thanks in advance for any efforts.

How cool would it be if xda setup a way to "bounty" devs with donating to an account that they can claim once they make the hack or rom... I think it would be great!

Guys, stop putting time lines for the devs. Stop sounding so demanding. If you want to donate to a dev, donate. Don't make it conditional. Most of you have no idea what it takes to do what they do..

That's what I was thinking. I would assume so. I've never heard of a piece of software that programatically modifies the total amount of available space of a partition. It would be 10x easier to simply partition the drive to the size you desire.

Eagerly awaiting the results!

i'll donate to more storage as well..

[Q] Galaxy S 4G: how much is your application storage?

I caught one with 190MB application storage which is unacceptable for most.
I use MT4 and NS instead of nexus one because of that. Don't ever think app2SD helps because it won't work when the phone is in USB mass storage mode or memory card is removed.
I had about the same until I started adding some of my apps to the phone. I can't even add all my apps because of the internal storage. Can't wait for root and some Roms (CyanogenMod 7).

Man this thing is pissing me off. I can't even install half the apps I had installed on my original Vibrant.
T-mobile should give us options on installing apps as soon as we turn it on. They just throw **** we won't use on the phone and call it a day. Now what if we had no devs nor root or anything like that? Look at what we would be stuck with. In that case people would just return the phone.

Cool I rooted it and have Titanium Backup installed. Just no CWM yet for ROM Manager.
I have all my appz installed with no issue... honestly 16gb onboard made the vibrant slow. im glad to have less... and I can install as many apps to my sd card as i want.
I see someone has said they have over 500mb of internal, how is that possible and why is mine not the same?
I'm on live chat with T-Mobile right now. The lady just told me...

Ok cool, let us know what's going on. I have a total of 539MB internal storage.
Specs says 1GB! I read that off phonedog I think.
"You should definitley have more memory than what you are showing. I can get you the manufacturers information. Since it is a Samsung device their support teams will definitely be able to assist you a little better than us at the moment.
_Jessica C: I know that you don't want to go back to the store, but if there is an issue with the device it may be the best bet since it is a new phone. I can also recommend taking it to a T-mobile direct dealer. They may be able to test your software. They know anything and everything about these phones.
_Jessica C: I do apologize but I am limited with my information at the time."
Since it's a new phone she doesn't have all the info, etc. At least they know there is a problem now.
I'm going to go to a t-mobile store and talk to them so I'll let you know what they say
LOL
i doubt that a t mobile rep would know anything and everything about the phone.
Ok, I just got off with a T-Mobile rep and she said the internal memory should have a total of 512MB. ...sucks! But good thing we have a 16GB sdcard.

Space Issue moving from Vibrant

I've moved from a Vibrant to a SGS4G. I hoped I could just tell Titanium to restore my apps+data from backup with the install to SD option.
It does this ok, until it runs out of space. Install to SD just puts the apk's on the SD. The dex and lib go to internal memory which runs out. Clearing the cache doesn't seem to buy much.
I've read through the EXT4 partitioning thread, but its not clear to me that will do me any good. Doesn't link2sd end up moving the same apk's to the SD as install to SD?
My external SD is 16GB and I have room. Shouldn't I be able to have as many apps on the SGS4G as I did on the Vibrant if I commit its space?
You might want to look into fota fix
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.matthenry87.fotafix&feature=search_result
You can free up a good amount of space with it. Yeah, this phone's internal memory is depressingly low... But eh, I've made do with it. Ever since doing the fota fix, I haven't gotten the message.
Im using the fota fix as well. Its worth it.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
I just took a look at the fota fix. Apparently it recovers the internal space needed for over the air updates.
From my Vibrant experience t-mobile is not doing any over the air updates, just Kies from samsung. Is that the same for SGS4G. and does fota interfere with Kies updates?

I do have a lot of apps, but they fit nicely on the vibrant. When I did the restore I noticed that the bigger ones like google earth and Opera use significant internal storage besides the apk on the SD card.
You really use google earth? I have never once used it. Nor have I used opera. Do you have more than one browser installed? Find one that fits the bill of all your needs. Thats what I do. I cannot stand using 2 pieces of software that could be rolled into one.
The thing is vibrant has 1 Gb of "Internal" storage. While sgs4g has a front facing camera, there that took up some of the memory! So fota will give you atleast 420 mb while a vibrant gives 1Gb. Hope this helps.

[Q] Coming from vibrant

Hi Guys
I will be getting my 4G in the next 2 days and i was doing some research to figure out how the 4G gets rooted and all of the other good stuff.
I have a vibrant but it looks totally different animal than the 4G. I want to say more Simple.
so my 1st question is If I am going to root how will i unroot if i want to turn the phone for repair or any other reason? as you know rooted phones out of warranty
2nd How is GB roms running comparing to vibrant when it comes to hardware supported, battery life, GPS .............. ?
and last question how come every time i go from page to another my internet security keeps flagging as malicious URL (malware) ?
also I want to say thank you all very much for the great Support here and all over XDA Forums

GB ROM's aren't fully stable just yet. And dev support is about 1/50th of what it is in the Vibrant section so it will take more time for it to pick up for the 4G. Also, internal memory sucks so you'll probably need apps2SD or something.
But there are plenty of great people here that will help you out, lots of good things should be coming to this phone in the future. The ROM bible in the dev section should provide you with a lot of rooting tips.
Good luck man.
Thanks for your respond mackster. I will be joining the game here soon.

Rooting and UnRooting
Correct me if I am Mistaking

Internal Memory
I believe that the internal memory is somewhere around 512 mb, hence the need for the fota fix, after replacing the fota files you should have in the area of +/- 350 mb.

I would not worry about the lack of internal memory. With the fota fix, removed bloatware and apps2sd you should never have any space issues. The 4g is one badass phone out the box, once you get all the mods up and going it is just killer.

just got it but too bad i have to go to work. I will be playing with it tomorrow after noon

Solution " Low Disk Space "

Solution to the ERROR " Low Disk Space "
Must Be Running A2SD
Ok so this isn't some be all end all solution to the problem. I'm sure this will solve the issue for most of the users out there. But inadvertently there are always those it does not work for. Basically I stumbled upon this while trying to resolve the issue I was having with the Wife's OG EVO 4G. Which is the pop up message saying " Low Disk Space " . It also resolved the issue of the other Pop Up she would get that said " insufficient memory " available. Basically the Memory I'm referring to is the Internal Memory. Before I did this she had 73MB of Internal Memory left. After I did this she ended up with well over 200MB. Now the results will vary for everyone. But you should end up with more Internal Memory.
PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH BEFORE DOING ANYTHING
So here's how:
1. Make sure your Running A2SD
2. Download Titanium Backup
3. Open Titanium Backup ( make a mental note of your Internal Free Memory )
4. Go to Backup/Restore let the apps load
5. Scroll down to Dialer Storage
6. Long Press on it a Pop up list will come up
7. Scroll till you see " Move app data to SD card "
8. Press it ( if this is your first time doing this you may get a pop up asking you if you want to create the Data to App Space. Click " YES "
9. It will do it's thing , and done
10. Now go back to Overview. You should see a noticeable Increase in Free Internal Memory
Now keep in mind the Results Will Vary For Everyone. Not everyone will gain a ton of Memory back. But in my experience it has resolved the issue 90% of the time.

Ok so I'm sensing a bit of an issue . Thank you, I understand how A2SD works. Also that moving an App manually to the SD Card is not A2SD. I know that A2SD does not work correctly if the Rom does not support it. I never stated anything about moving the App to the SD Card. In the OP I state that you should move the App data to the SD Card. Also I only mentioned about moving the Data from the Dialer Storage. Although I've moved several other Apps Data to the SD Card without issue. Angry Birds to mention one, which performs the same as before I moved App Data to the SD Card. As for moving an App to the SD Card, or running it from the SD Card. There are a few more things involved as to how it performs. The SD Card Class, and the SD Card read ahead speed to name a couple.
Are you sure you know how a2sd works? If you did then you would know that app data in an sdcard runs so slow its not even worth it

Once again Thank You for your " Opinion " . Duly noted. Also once again, I am WELL aware of how A2SD works on an Android Device. I am also aware that if it is Implemented on quite a few Roms out there. So I pose the question to you. Why is it that so many Devs use it on there Roms, INCLUDING YOU.
As in THIS Rom thread, and the one HERE. Thanks again for your opinion. Have a nice day.
Quote from your thread as posted by you in your OP :
FAQ
Why did I include a apps2ext script to the rom?
Even though we have 1GB space of internal memory and a lot of the G2 users believe that is enough.
The more apps that are installed, the slower our phones can get after time.
Apps2ext takes all of that stress from our internal storage and diverts it to our sd-ext partition if there's any.
This results in our phones never have to worry about slowing down just because of the number of apps that we have installed.

Yes true enough. But a bit beyond your average users scope of ability .
Because I DON'T MOVE the data/data to sd-ext. You keep saying you are well aware of how it works but clearly you don't know which makes it faster while others make the phone lag

Ok enough is enough . I am not talking about moving all App Data to the SD Card. I was only saying to move the App Data form the Dialer Storage. As is clearly stated in the OP. I have more then once in actual testing verified that it does not, and is not affecting the performance of the Devices I have tested. That are also currently using this method. Which is well more than just one, or two Devices. I understand that you do not agree with what is stated in the method in the OP. I get it. Lets agree to disagree. If you do not like what is stated STOP READING. Do not continue to TROLL the thread stating that I " do not understand how A2SD works " . If that were the case I would not have posted the thread. This is not my first Rodeo. I did not just post without first testing, and verifying what I was about to post for other users. I do not casually post to bolster my own ego, and post count. So thank you for your opinion, and have a good one.

All good . It's always nice to have options. I'm sure it will work, just not what I would recommend. In addition to what I did in the OP I also run Dalvik form the SD Card. Although I would not recommend that to everyone. Reason being it's can be finicky. There are a few variables involved, Rom, SD Card Class, Device. I've found it works better if you have a Higher Class SD Card.

+20GB space unaccounted for in all File managers. Ghost Data. Need help.

As you can see from the 2 pics, my phone shows 92Gb used in settings whereas multiple different file managers show my entire used Storage/ SD to be precisely 68.92Gb.
Where is this ghost data from and how can i find it?
PS this is not an error because the available space is indeed according to 92GB space filled. So only 23gb left.
Any advice is highly appreciated.

Damn, what a fantastically simple app! Thanks man! Love how i find such hidden gems in this community :victory:
only thing i could tell was that it is showing my full storage to be 108gb which is probably incorrect. I think 128Gb model gets atleast 116GB storage fpr use.
Do u have 128gb storage model?

yea, i have the 128 model and when i first got the phone it said 116gb but i think not the OS takes up 20 GB so it leaves me with 106-108 and then i got like 12gb of data so i am already at 94gb, which is still enough but i really hate how big the android system takes up and guess it has to do with the A and B partition also.

Oh wow, i didn't know that. I think ur right because i went to the root folder in diskusage and there was the entire system, away from the /SD 108gb, so this is separate data worth 20gb or so! Damn :/
