quad cores!! - Thunderbolt General

man o man we havent even received the first dual core phone and it was just announced today that the have quad core chips for phones now each running at 2.5ghz. so basically the bionic is old hardware now...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/qualcomm-unveils-next-gen-snapdragon-family-including-quad-core/

The quadrant score for the Thunderbolt hit 1950 , how fast do you have to be. Although the duals will have better battery life , and a higher price tag.
Sent by my Droid Incredible

I will jump on the dual-core bandwagon next year when my 1 year Thunderbolt contract is up. For now, the TB will be fast enough for me.
Besides, Android 2.3 is not optimized for dual-core so you will be waiting until the minor 2.4 upgrade to see any dual-core optimizations.

Falling behind: choosing a phone

looks like there's an explosion of 1GHz processor powered phones this year, and they are getting 1.3GHz..
what will happen next year? Should I concern whether Nexus one/ desire can survive any further?
My personal opinion: 1Ghz is sufficient for the next 2 years. Pointless getting 1.5 Ghz dual-core until they get battery-technology moving along. If a phone can't even last a day, what is it good for?

My bank account sure hopes so! lol
I think both Android and certainly WM still have plenty of headroom left to operate with the current 1Ghz procs. Going from 1 to 1.3Ghz really isn't worth the investment right now and won't be for a while yet...you would get more benefit out of something like a dedicated video chip or better battery technology (as poisonwolf mentioned)

Correct on both counts. It's just that neither are a compelling reason to spend money on upgrading to.
A better video chip is much more important, also memory is a crucial point in getting a device to run fluently.

MyTouch 4G Quadrant score

I got my hands on a MyTouch 4G today and quickly installed Quadrant to see what kind of score it would produce.
I got screen shots but don't have permission to post pics or links...
put it up on your facebook? or flicka?
I just want to know for sure if it's dual core or not. Nobody seems to know.
well, I have a screen shot of the CPU info too
try this
hxxp://tinypic.com/r/2wc34sy/7
hxxp://tinypic.com/r/15wce9k/7
same CPU as the G2, just clocked higher
Quadrant score of 1908
CPU: ARMv7 rev1 (v7l) @ 1024 MHz
Cores: 1
and by the way, I took these screen shots after installing Shoot Me, and using VISIONary to temp root the phone. VISIONary is amazing! it gave me temporary root in seconds.
what were your general impressions of the phone? Does it appear to have a super-lcd screen?
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/10/22/mytouch-4g-benchmark/
the phone was quick and responsive. not sure about the screen, but it looked very similar to the G2 screen in my opinion, if that helps. the video calling with Qik worked better on WiFi than on 3G or HSPA (which would be expected), but I wouldn't say it was crystal clear. Overall it was nice and solid, and not as "plastic" feeling as previous MyTouch's
t-mobile employees got their hands on them last week when they did sort of a essay entry thing on why they should get the device, the winners were awarded with the device... It should be released for pre order within the next 2 weeks or so...

But what about the official statement from TMO?
"Designed by HTC exclusively for T-Mobile, the new myTouch features a brilliant 3.8-inch WVGA touch-screen display with virtual keyboard and Swype® for easy text input. The thin and sleek device also comes with a blazing fast second-generation Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 1GHz MSM8255 processor optimized for speed and graphic performance, a 5-megapixel camera, a preinstalled 8 GB microSD memory card, and an integrated media player that brings together favorite music, video and internet radio under one set of controls."

As far as Ghz go... Snapdragon is 1Ghz proc and G2 runs circles around it with 800Mhz. So yes, it does matter which generation proc we get.
Then again, it's all about how phone feels in real life, that's the main reason I want to wait. I went to the store to check out HD2 when it was released. Oh boy was it a beast on paper. Oh boy what a dissapointment in real life.
Still, can't wait for MT4G
Snapdragon is 8XXX right?
They are all snapdragons, just different generation/architectures of the cpu and different configurations of cpu/gpu. I'm not really good with all that naming/code bs but from what I know, newer Snapdragons (the ones in G2 and MT4G) are way faster then older ones (N1, Evo, Incredible, etc) at the same clock speed. Think Intel Celeron and Pentium4 difference. But it's not all about speed neither. There's more to it, just check out the link.
http://www.qualcomm.com/products_services/chipsets/snapdragon.html
But, after seeing wirefly's video of MT4G, I don't even care anymore. Comes next week, I'll be picking mine up. In black.

This is wrong, the one coming to Verizon will have LTE.
i just want a samsung galaxy phone on verizon network with LTE, dual core, any phone i should keep my eyes on? but for now ill enjoy my charge.
Keep an eye on the Google Nexus Prime; rumored to have ICS preinstalled, no overlay(TouchWiz, Motoblur etc. None of that crap), 720p Super Amoled HD display(720x1280), dual core TI OMAP4460 processor overclocked at 1.5ghz, 1 gig of ram, LTE and not to mention the fact that it's a Google branded phone so it will receive OS updates first. The only downside is this phone is rumored to only have a 5MP camera.

I wouldn't hold out hope for it to be released anytime soon on verizon. GS2 looks really nice and will probably launch next month and it will probably have lte. Leaked roadmaps show a possible release for a fitting samsung phone the same day the bionic is supposed to drop. Htc vigor looks VERY interesting as well: 1.5ghz dual core, 720p display and all that good stuff.

Seriously I love the whole look of Sense but everything on Sense is emulated through apps(aside from the core features like the way you scroll through home pages and stuff) but the keyboard/clock/weather/wallpapers/lockscreen can all be ran on the Charge without the need of a theme. Of course, the theme is much better but it requires Gummycharged and I'm an Eclipse guy currently.

[Q] Galaxy Note or Quad Core?

I really want to get rid of this atrix. I love the fingerprint sensor and all that but i think its time for an upgrade. The software on the phone is dying because i think the last update for it just started to roll out on soak, and it is just starting to lag ALOT.
I am either in this looking for the Galaxy Note because it just seems soooooo worth it to me. I would love a larger screen and the Exynos chip seems to do wonders.
Or.... should I wait for quad core phones later? Will the quad core really make a difference? Isn't ICS only optimized for dual-core anyway? I just don't see a need for quad-core other than a marketing gimmick. I understand battery life would be better, but The Galaxy Note battery seems to last at least a day on normal use and that's fine with me.
Help? lol

Well I would go for the Samsung Galaxy Note (I have had it and the SGSII and your rumors are true the exynos chips are just amazing )
The quad cores sounds great....in paper, they concentrate in doing the phone with better chips but not with better batteries and with what i know right now they would probably have like today phones battery (ex. 1800-2200 mAh) and considering the chips they'll have they'll drain it like orange juice but well they sound great for show off with your friends jajaja
Yes, he's right, unless the scientists develop hydrogen batteries newer and better phones will have more battery drain.
Anyway, the galaxy note is an excellent phone, and huge
I'm fairly certain the Note is using snapdragon, not sammy's.

you need to compare facts around, so people with a 800x480 display and dual core 1Ghz do not tell you its sooo much faster as snapdragon than tegra2.
If the snapdragon 1.4Ghz dualcore is used on a 1280x766 display the graphics rendering require so much more power to complete the graphics and handle it.
For now i think the only good one is tegra2/3, is you have seen the rendering on tegra3 snowball game, you should be convinced since no other device is capable of delivering that on 720p displays.
but do note, i got both acer and asus prime, and i find both device pretty similar although prime is quadcore, and only seen the glowball thing to utilize it 100% rest is pretty much the same. maybe FPS games do run smoother on quadcore like shadowgun but i havent had the chance to compare it.
if you already got a tegra2 device, wait untill the new fullHD tegra devices appear like Acer A700 device and the nextgen from Asus with fullHD display too.
depends what you need it for dont know if this is true but i herd somewhere that a single core has the worst battery life and a duel core has better and a quadcore even better cos a single core will have all the mhz running on that core and a quadcore will spread the mhz out on all cores thus better battery life in my opinion id wait for reviews on a quadcore phone like the s3

But AT&T is getting the far superior One X. This is the final straw for me. Once again, T-Mobile gets the second class device, while another carrier gets the top end device. No more. I'm sick of second class equipment.
Ironically, I recently switched home cable providers for the same reason. Wow Cable had old ancient cable boxes which were laggy and had no features. The service is no better on Comcast, but the equipment is MUCH better. How companies like Wow and T-Mobile stay in business, I have no idea.
Why can't all of the providers get the same phones!!! Then they can evenly compete on service!

True. But I'm sure most of us would rather have the 4.7 inch 720p screen that the OX has. After playing with my gf's GN often, I don't want anything less than 4.5 inches and 720p display.
Superior or not, I can't wait for this phone to drop.
Plus with the One V having very similar specs to the mytouch 4g this should give us hope of very good ports of ics and sense 4.0!

Yeah, I read that later. It does help because it makes the only appreciable difference the screen. Still though, and like mackster said, I really want the current standard 720p resolution. Not something that came out a year ago! There's always something that keeps T-Mobile a second class carrier.
Yeah, i saw this and i was SOO excited, if the specs are similar, the MT4G will live on foreva!
Edit: Ok guys, i have seen the specs and have compared them...
Here is how the phones stack up: SAME display resolution, ONE V: 512 Ram...MT4G: 768 Ram , Both have single core snapdragon processors. This is definitely a good sign. Our phone is better than the one that has been released (on paper at least) and it should be fairly easy to port the roms given screen resolution. I think HTC just saved our asses. YAY!!!
