Temp root question - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, sorry for asking a noobish question. I know it was said somewhere but for some reason I can't find it.
But I remember sometime that if you accepted an update, you couldn't temp/perm root. Is this still true?
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App

Last I heard was that they sent an update out on a different model phone that stopped the exploit and that they would likely do it to the shift soon. Dunno if they ever did. If you updated your then try and see if temp root works and you'll know for sure. Otherwise I wouldn't except any updates from them if you're wanting to root.

Confirmed
I'm fully OTA updated, and the temp root still works via visionary

You can update your data profile and PRL with no problem. You just don't want to accept any firmware updates which there haven't been any yet.

Evo Shift Root Exploit and Development Thread

Please place all of your discussions about obtaining root on the Evo Shift here.
Temp root:Temporary root can be acheived a number of ways on the shift the easiest being either z4root app or the visionary plus root app.
Z4root:
download here and install as you would any other apk
open the app and hit temporary root
let it run till you are notified of its success
you now have temporary root!!
*Note you have to reapply z4 each time you reboot your phone
Visionary:
full instructions and the link to visionary can be found here. http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
IMPORTANT NOTE!
PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTA UPDATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they patched the root exploit on the desire z when they updated you can most definitely expect them to do the same for the shift so please for that sake of everybody being able to get proper root do not accept any updates unless further notified!!!
unless you just dont care about root that is.....
so far, we got a temporary root.
No point in trying unrevoked as it scans for the device name and shows
"sorry, the device 'speedy' is not suppored" (paraphrasing)
wish i knew alittle more about this.
You can get to hboot by Holding down the vol down while powering on
Also in a previous thread bubby323 requested a dump of /system and dnalevelc obliged:
* http://www.digglesworth.net/evoshift/system.7z
In another forum (androidcentral) someone noted that an app called VISIONary works to auto temp-root the Shift upon boot.
* http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Edit: Also there's code to temp root the G2 using a different exploit below. I haven't attempted to run it on my Shift. Possibly not relevant since it has a newer version but could be if an update is pushed to the Shift:
* https://github.com/tmzt/g2root-kmod/tree/scotty2/scotty2/psneuter
got the shift today. MAN this thing is fast! i'd love to see unrevoked release a small update that supports the shift. otherwise i can do it the long way but i can't wait to see the scores once i get a custom ROM on it.
Visonary does work, I turned on temproot on boot and then i pressed temproot now and it rebooted the phone. The phone was either taking its time or got stuck on the 4G for 2-3 mins so I pulled the battery and started the phone up again. I installed connectbot and typed su and got a #. Tried the reboot command and it wouldn't let me so I went into root explorer and it prompted the su app, gave it permission and started hacking away at bloatware..... no luck, it still came back from the grave :\
I successfully Temp rooted with z4root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953) and I couldnt get the download off the market so I just went to 4shared.com and searched z4root and picked up 1.3.0 which is the latest version....
It worked great and I used Titanium back up and a screen shot app that both needed root.
does anyone think the rageagainstthecage exploit will work on this? i assume people are working on it? cause if it does, that means unrevoked3 could possibly release a new version with shift support, right? since unrevoked is just an automated rageagainstthecage, right?
edit: i mean, for permanent root, S-OFF.

yes, the rage exploit is what works and is what z4root uses. However I couldn't get the actual binary to work from the CLI using adb.
Just curious--with this temp root, will the wireless tether app work? At least until the phone is restarted. I use that app quite a bit with my Hero, to get on the sites blocked at work on my ipad

Yes we finally got a forum
But on to the good stuff and not so good stuff
Even though we only have temp root partitions on the shift can be flashed using dd I won't go into exactly how to do it till I get home because the commands have to be EXACT!!!! Or u risk bricking your phone... I've had to ruu a couple times now
O btw the ruu that was previously leaked appears to be exactly what was released on the shift.

[Q] Updating after root

I searched through the rooting thread, but that only said it was ok to root the phone after installing the latest update from verizon. Now that my phone is rooted, can I still apply the updates verizon pushes down?

No no no NO!
You will lose root.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
You wouldnt even get the updates Verizon pushes. You could manually flash the RUU's and you would loose root or you could just wait until the ROM you use starts basing their future versions off of the updates which wont lose root.
If you look on the TB forum sites you will usually be able to find the update for rooted phones to if you are not using a custom ROM.

Update HTK55D

This just popped up on me does anybody know what this update is?

I just got the pop-up too, and have no idea! ? Going to check Motorola's web site to see if I can find out. Not sure it's worth it for me to unroot!
Anyone know if there is a way to root 3.2.1 yet???
Got the update too, am I correct in thinking I need to unroot to install it on US 3.2 ?
I too just got the update notification on my 3G Xoom running the latest Tiamat Rom. Imma just chill and wait for Team Tiamat's crew to have it rooted. It's not worth a root users time to be on stock. Us root users are power users, and that's something you can't get with pure stock no root.
Point of the post: If you are a root user such as myself, just chill and wait for the devs to do their thing. It's only going to take a day or two if you look at the previous track records.

Agreed. This is what I am doing. However, I must say that the OTA nag every thirty or so minutes is quite annoying, lol.
Its probably nothing. First off its 1.5MB lol. I can imagine it is nothing amazing that Tiamat ROM hasn't already done.
And agreed, the constant notification is extremely annoying. There is a thread in the development forum about disabling the popup I believe.

I got to get in on this as well I agree why would anyone want to unroot for an update that you can get in a rooted version or may already of been done.
But will agree the popup nag is annoying especially since I let my lil daughter play on my Xoom and now I got to stop her incase she presses the wrong thing.
Like everyone above me has said moral to that story just wait it will all be handled
I think the update enabled the use of the SD card . I noticed a " d " folder in my file manager .

sd card support was already there no change with 3.2.1
it is more likely security patch
Incoming noobness....
So, I have a Xoom on Tiamat 2.2.1 as well, and I just started getting this nag screen for the update.
Just curious, what happens if I update? Goes to stock and unrooted?
I assume if Tiamat comes out with an update, it should be an easy install through clockwork mod and I don't have to start from scratch again?
Because the bootloader is unlocked you'll just get an error if anything at all, so nothing to be worried about.
Too bad I don't have a locked bootloader xoom otherwise I'd do the update real fast just to pull the build.prop file since the build.prop file in the update zip is not actual text.
Apparently there's a way to just reroot but I keep trying to find directions and don't know what I'm supposed to do after I update to get it rooted again. Does anyone here know how to do it without wiping data all over again?

You use solarnz Universal Root to reroot in the dev section.
would someone who has updated please share their build.prop?
Um...I did the OTA update and it still says I'm on 3.2 in the settings. I also seem to have root access still. Was it unsuccessful? Because I check for updates again and it says I'm up-to-date...What the heck?

yeah, just found it in the notification bar . tab downloaded it automatically,

can you verify that you do have root? run something that will call su, like droidwall
Yes, I can still overclock and it says that whatever program has been granted superuser permissions. I'm still on 3.2 and now the system update says that I'm up-to-date. I got an exclamation point halfway through the install, but everything's still working fine. What the heck should I do at this point? At least I'm not getting nagged to update anymore, but I wanted to be current. Any ideas?
No idea man, im trying to find out what will happen to my xoom "rooted only"
if i apply the ota. will it fail will i lose root, will it brick me. cant seem to find anyone who knows

VRLG7 Update breaks root

I just applied the OTA update (VRLG7) and it seems to have broken root. When running the superuser.apk and attempting to update the binary, I get the following...
"Gaining root access... fail!"
Using the terminal app shows that /system/xbin/su has the "-rwxr-xr-x" permissions, but when I try to execute it, I get a "Permission Denied", but the usual popup that the superuser.apk app shows for granting superuser permissions. I checked the superuser.apk, and the terminal and superuser apps are allowed to have root.
Has anybody run across this? Do I have to re-root it? From what I can remember, rooting it just puts the superuser.apk and su binary in the proper locations....but if they already exist, how would re-rooting it fix it?
Thanks!
Yeah there's a few other threads on this and people were able to re-root and unlock.

Thanks for the responses. I left my usb cable at home today, so I will have to wait. I did the update at work, and I'm just kind of stuck for the time being.
Hopefully the reroot will work out for me and life will be good again!!
Thanks!
I am running the ( VRLG7 ) modem since I downloaded it 3 days ago and have not lost root or unlock, Maybe you missed it but one of the #1 rules is to not except OTA updates from Verizon because they will break your root and your unlock and possible brick your phone

I stuck to the #1 rule, but everybody here and everwhere said it was safe and you can still root and unlock the bootloader. I figured that since everybody said it was safe, why not.
Like others said, I re-rooted it and it was fine. Last time, I used odin, but this time, used casual. It worked well, but after the root, I went into superuser and did an 'update'. The phone rebooted into the 'lock' screen for a minute, rebooted, and things came up fine. Strange, but it worked. Hopefully, it's not a sign.

My phone restarted to clockwork and asked me if I wanted to install it. I took a chance and said yes and after holding my breath, clockwork asked me it looks like root might have been lost.. Fix? I said sure and sure enough after rebooting I had the latest update and I was still rooted. It did say update failed but I still have the latest firmware and there is no newest update.

HELP! 9.30.1 OTA (LOST ROOT) Is There a Different way to Gain Root Back?

Ok so heres my first question?........... Is there any possible way of gaining root access through linux for my android ? ....Like running certain commands to do so......I know u have to change permissions and make changes to the android file system......And was wondering since linux uses root in terminals and so on and so forth would it work to access root in linux and maybe use a file manager to open your android system files in linux to make these changes so u may root. .. Instead of waiting for a DEV to create a method or script that will work ... Isnt there a way we can gain this back without waiting for an actual script to release . I rely on my root for a vast majority of my apps and i am lost without it . I know it may be more complex and diffucult for some people but to gain root access back this way ... But it would be great.
I have a working linux set up on my comp already with working adb /sdk installed ..... If anybody can help me with rooting my phone it would be very much appreciated. Im not new to this at all im very familiar with linux and how to use it. i basically need help with the rooting process and what to do when it comes to that.
I do not have an unlocked bootloader if that makes any difference.
Took 9.30.1 OTA and lost root.
As far as i know there is no script/method to root for the new OTA 9.30.1 update.
Tryed rooting already with Linux but my file system wont allow anything to be written to it.. Its Read Only File System. I think it has to be Read/Write
I really hope there is a root script/method released soon if this way isnt possible
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Mostly likely none. Because at this point 95% of people know to protect root before taking an ota. Or just don't take it.

My phone is the not-unlockable one and locked.
I happend to click yes when this update question came. After realizing what was happening, I set my phone to flight mode, and the update downloading is now paused. Is there anyway to cancel this downloading/update process?
I have installed safestrape and backup my stock ROM before this. The worst is that I restore the backup and the update question will be prompted again, right?
Or is there other way to stop the update downloading in progress?
Another question, if root is lost through the OTA update, can I restore the backup through Safestrape and get root again? Or is everything gone?

Once root is lost after the ota has been fully applied, the backup will do you no good as there is a new kernel applied.
As for it being paused, I believe you should be okay. Just because you started the download doesn't mean it's been applied. Freeze the updater apk and reboot. I believe that will cancel the download and with the frozen updater, you won't get bothered again.
You could apply the update if you save root with voodoo root keep but if you ever have to reimage your phone, you will lose root permanently. I'd just hold off and wait and see if an exploit is ever found.

Anyone working on a root exploit for 9.30.1
So is anyone working on an exploit to root this update?? I just don't want to have to keep SBF'ing my Razr Maxx HD back to older versions and reconfiguring all my stuff. For what ever reason, I could not get OTA's. I was rooted(motochopper) and used superuser and voodoo. Protected my root, temp unrooted, downloaded the update, but then it would fail on install. I even tried flashing back to the stock recovery and it failed. So just to see what the 9.30 did, I installed it through Droid Razr HD Utility 1.34...of course I lost root, can't put a custom recovery on it, but my phone seems to run pretty good for a stock rom. So, I'm just wondering.

I had root with the 9.30.1 update. I backed up root with OTA RootKeeper but my phone was acting up so i factory reset it and all went to hell...!!! I protected everything and backed up hoping that would do the trick but unfortunately it didnt save the root like it should have now i sit I regret ever resetting it thats for sure. It was risky on my part playing with the reset option knowing there was no exploit out yet and i payed the price

if so, search for a flash-able zip of SU. you can root any build, problem solved.
I know our RAZR HD's are old, but there's nothing better out there. At this point, I'm willing to pay cash money for anyone able to find a new root exploit for this dumb 9.30 update. I took all the precautionary steps and have an unlocked phone, yet for some reason as soon as the update applied I lost root. It happened during the last ota and I got lucky that the warranty covered me. Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty. So once again, please find a root exploit and I'll pay you. I dont want to get rid of my razr. Thanks yall

I've tried every su time there is in here and other sites. They fail every time. I've tried recovery through twrp and cwm and they both fail. As a matter of fact since I took the update neither one of those will work now either. I'll keep trying new stuff until I succeed or brick this phone. All other devices that are currently available can't hold a flame to the RAZR.

I get the "warning, boot loader unlocked" message every time I power up. Used *#*#4636#*#* and checked that device shows root. I took all the precautionary steps before installing the ota, and I was having problems that both 9.20 and 9.30 fixed. Was running eclipse as a ROM before all this went screwy lewy
tried using motochopper (no winning)
All boxers are checked, however when I get the true ending to check my SU, it gives me some bogus message about needing to update SU, however it says I have an HTC device, I'm very confused on this, and don't understand what it is even referring too.
Anyone know what I'm reading about here?
