[Q] - Droid 2 Global General

Hello all,
So I just bought a Droid 2 Global from Verizon and got it in the mail this week.
I've been looking around online here and at another site and I'm thinking about rooting my phone.
But I'm really confused about everything and trying to figure out the Pro's and Con's of rooting.
I'm also unsure of the best way to go about it. I've only really found two ways of Rooting the D2G.
One is typing a script, and then using Z4Root I believe it's called.
Which is the best way to root my device to get the most out of it and are there other things I should or need to do to prep it?
Thanks!
Edit: Forgot to add a title for the post...
Is there a way I can change it?

I used z4root to root my phone. Then bootstrap to flash recovery. Then titanium back up to remove bloatware crap and freeze someother stuff. Clockwork to fix permissions and get things all smooth like. Then backed up. Used set cpu to underclock cpu to 1ghz for bat savings. Also wireless tether for root users and the free wii remote app is also cool. Adfree helps to stop those pesky ads in apps n games n such. I just like how rooting gives you a lot more control over your phone I guess. In answer to your ?, that is the method I used and what I did with it. Cheers

Thanks for the info!
I'm trying it right now. Hopefully It'll work
If it does I'll also try looking up those other apps your recommended and see how those work out!
Any other pretty cool apps to try while I'm at it?

Try downloading the z4root apk from a computer and transfering it to the phone via usb cable. Also, make sure you have unknown sources checked in settings>applications

@Rusty
I actually didn't know that I had to do that at 1st til I tried it
I remembered seeing the option and figured that had something to do with it so I checked it and then moved it from my PC to my SD.

If you search for the app in the xda forum it will run you through the steps on how to root. Also Team Defuse has a good how to on their web site. The person above is using their fission rom, which is currently the only rom out there worth a damn for our phone I guess...? Fission is pretty vanilla though. Fast , but to plain jane for me. Hope all this helps. Cheers.
Sent from my Rooted Droid 2 Global

Yeah, once you install z4root, rooting is as easy as pushing a button. Also, its good that fission is very vanilla, its very customizable, I assure you, my fission install is nowhere close to vanilla

[Q] Root now or wait for Gingerbread?

Hey all,
I've been reading up on the forums, trying to figure out the best option to root my Inspire 4G and making sure there is a proven unroot method.
I guess my biggest question is whether I should root now or wait for the official Gingerbread update to come out and root then?? Any input about this question would be greatly appreciated along with suggestions to BEST root/unroot options to keep the phone as close to stock as possible yet have the ability to get rid of these bloated programs.
Anyway, love the site!
We really have no idea if/when AT&T will even release Gingerbread for this phone, so if you might have to root just to get it and install one of the Desire HD releases.
Rooting is not all that hard, the key is making the goldcard correctly. After that you can either do attn1's hack kit or Bubby's gui based method. After that install one of the stock rooted ROMS from the dev section.

I guess there are questions as to what your actual goal is. Do you need to install non-market applications, do you need to really remove the stock AT&T additions? I am not sure I would call the AT&T additions bloated, they serve a purpose in a way most people would rather have served by other programs and therefore bloat the ROM but they are fairly well behaved and aren't that big.
If you check the development section there are rooted stock ROMs available. This will keep everything very close to the original HTC ROM with much of the AT&T extras removed. The rooting process is fairly straight forward if not a bit painful at times, with the hardest part being the process of finding an SD card that will work as a Gold Card. I rooted my phone as I needed some non-market applications from my company that can not be side loaded properly as part of their installation requires accepting a system change and they will not work without this confirmation.
As to Gingerbread coming to this phone, if the amount of time it took the Aria to get Froyo updates is any indication, don't wait for the official release. AT&T drags its feet on updates to phones after they get potential updates from the vendors. This is because they claim to be doing heavy testing internally to make sure the update process is smooth. Not sure I buy that but it does take a long time between versions, so if you are eager for some change on your phone root it now because your wait for an AT&T release will be long.
Basically, I want to keep the door open to do any customization I want as I learn what this OS and phone is capable of.
I'm an avid tinkerer with PCs and the Windows OS and I enjoy not being restricted to one set way to do things. However, I like the setup this phone has originally. I just don't like apps such ad AT&T Familymap, Navigator, Code Scanner, the asphalt game, and the worthless blockbuster app. They are the devil.
Seriously though, I'm all about custom goodies. But I also need a proven way if the phone goes haywire or gets damaged that I can restore to factory and send it in since I have insurance on the Inspire.
Hope this helps fill in the blanks as far as questions to how I'm going to use it. Appreciate the answers so far so please keep them coming!
Oh and I read some rumor that gingerbread was coming in May or June. Good point though on carriers dragging their feet. More than likely going to root now.
Rooting is probably going to be the same no matter what so you may as well do it. As for gingerbread you can get that now with CM7 RC2 is pretty good. If you font mind no htc sense its great and getting better. You can always try it and then change.

Regarding your questions about going back to stock after obtaining root/s-off, it is a very simple process. As for rooting, the hack kit has a very detailed set of instructions.
After reading what you are looking to do, I would suggest moving to one of the rooted stock roms and playing with that. Then flash one of the gingerbread roms whenever you want to check them out. Of course, do a nandroid to save time going back to your previous setup.
You want to go ahead and root dont wait for at&t

I rooted my phone with bubby's rooting program and have downloaded Core Droid Gingerbread version 4 and it is working great, the extra effects that they have added make it all that much more fun to have. I would not wait for AT&T at all.
Waiting for AT&T is like going through a White Castles drive-thru. You only do it if you have a great deal of time to waste.

anyone tried bubby's root method

man.. ive never felt so cro-magnon.. this shouldnt be giving me problems but with all the possibilities to root this.. Im a bit confused as far as which method is going to work 100%
If performed correctly, all methods will work 100%. Bubby's is by far the easiest imo. It tells you exactly what to do, step by step. Not quite as simple as one-click, but pretty dang close.
If you read the 2000+ replies to his post, a bunch of us have, but I know it's hard to sift through. I had a few starts and stops, but I think the real trick is ending up with a good gold card. Once it was working, it went smooth.
yeah i started to just about give up but then started over from scratch.. made sure i had all the ducks lined up and slowed down. It worked great this time around.. I suppose now ill have to flash a rom. id just assume take the bloatware off first
Well if you flash a rom that has bloatware removed then you're killing two birds with one stone.

This is true. I've also found that some ROMs bring back the ones I've uninstalled. I would recommend using titanium backup to get rid of the useless ones. Be careful though. Some are needed for the system to run correctly.
my benchmark scores went down after install the other roms... the optimized stock rom and the revolution though the revolution one was a bit faster. might try aginger bread rom

I felt the same way. I was terrified I was gonna brick my phone, but the process was very easy and straightforward. The most "difficult" part was the goldcard, but even that was easy with the latest application pack he has, it has an automatic goldcard maker in there, very easy to use. After that, it's just a matter of following directions (ie, mostly just pushing a button on your keyboard when told to and then entering a few commands on your phone, but all of it is written down and verrrry easy to do).
I very very very highly recommend bubby's root method.
It was SO good, in fact, that he's got a donation coming his way when payday comes. I honestly never expected it all to be THAT easy. I figured "oh hell, I'm gonna have all kinds of problems and I'm gonna look like the world's biggest idiot when I have to beg for help on the forums", but I had no problems whatsoever! Ez-Pz. Do it already!! If you found it as easy as I did, you might want to consider a donation too. Bubby is a young guy and we need to keep him interested and making great stuff like this in the future.
Oh, and everything works precisely as it did before too. No issues with calls, signal, GPS, sound, sync, battery, or any software issues whatsoever.
Thank you so much! I am seriously worried about it and had no clue if it worked. And reading your comment encouraged me. Heck I even made an account just to reply to this. Thanks so much for that needed inspiration

Bubbys' one touch is great. Just follow the instructions and have patience.
First time rooter here. I used bubby's root method, watched the video like 6 times, read as much on these forums as possible, and followed the instructions exactly. I had 0 problems. I would highly recommend it.
Just remember, RTFM.

Yes. That video was the missing piece of the puzzle for me. If you do what zonderion does in that video, just like he does it, you will root your phone without issue.

^Thank you. Trying now. I'm a android virgin so a bit nervous to say the least. I'll update later with my results.
I was a first time user of Bubby's. I had one problem when entering commands in the terminal emulator.
I had a half rooted phone with no sound
I started back over (this time not quick formatting the sd card, and formatting the sd card while in the phone instead of a card reader)
Bingo like a charm. I also rooted my buddies inspire about an hour ago using the same method and worked fine first try.
I did it last night without issue though I am not sure why I did. It says there is a bloatware removal option but I never came across one. My only reason for the root is to get rid off all the junk I never touch. I'd like a stock Gingerbread ROM with Sense though. Now I am searching for an App or method to get rid of the bloatware.
Sense did a great job of copying everything back to the phone. I didn't lose anything at all! At least I think it is Sense that did that.
I flashed the cm7 ROM using rom manager. Got rid of all the bloatware. Miui looks like a nice gingerbread rom, I haven't taken the time to try it yet.

Titanium backup will remove bloat. It's worth every penny. If you get the paid version, you can opt to just "freeze" it, meaning it becomes invisible to the system (won't load). It will still occupy physical storage space on your internal storage, but can be readily "unfrozen", (restored).
Optionally, you can fully remove it, which will fully remove all traces of it, freeing up your internal storage.
Yet another way, would be to first do a backup of the bloat, which will be on your "external" larger SD card, and then after that go back and fully "uninstall" it, and it will accomplish both: restore-able, yet not auto-loading into memory, and not taking up internal physical storage space.
All within titanium backup. Five bucks well-spent.
In regards to a stock gingerbread sense Rom, which also is bloat free, Inspired Ace 1.0, which is what I'm running, meets those conditions exactly. Highly recommended.

Have you tried a Sense cleaned up (bloatware) ROM? In any case, you might want to use Titanium to at least freeze some of the bloatware apps. You should still be able to get the OTA 2.3 update if/when HTC/TMo finally gets around to it.
I am not sure if being rooted will prevent that.
root on stock ROM shouldnt prevent it. although you will probably lose root. good idea to wait to update and see what the devs say about any new update. losing root to a new update isnt cool because you never know how long it will take for some one to figure out how to root again.
I am with you. I have not tried nor want to try any roms. I really like the default rom as is. I came from the HD2 where I flashed so many different roms, I ended up staying with a version of the mytouch 4g. Then I went and bought a real mytouch 4g and love it. I also rooted to get rid of the crappy apps. No problem with keeping it as is. People will always try and talk you into flashing a custom, but to be honest this is the first time I never have had any bugs or issues that I had to live with until the "next update".
same here...no matter how many different ROMS I flash, I always end up going back to the stock MySense. I did have a great experience with Orange Sense tho, pure sense and blazing fast thanks to Faux
Totally with you guys, after flashing several roms, trying to get them to work properly, then ending up too frustrated to continue, went right back to stock rom. rooted and removed bloatware. now happy as can be.
Same deal here. I came from the HD2 running android as well with the MT4G build, then I just bought the real deal. Mainly for the wifi calling and the front camera for the video calling. I gave the HD2 to my daughter and for some reason just last week the touch screen stopped working,, for windows and android. So there sending me a replacement, it should be here sometime this week. Does any of you know if I can use HP3 to flash roms and android builds? cuz I did use HD2 and Now I can't find it but I did find HD3. I waS Just wondering if they did the same thing. but I'm glad to hear i'm not the only one who digs the stock sense. I thought I was the only one.. LOL.. although now that CM7 is officially out I may give it a look... but I'm sure as always i'll end up back with stock.. and hopefully we'll get the honeycomb upgrade or the 2.3 sooner or later..
I'm also happy with the Stock Sense Rom, so happy in fact that I haven't rooted yet lol. My last phone was a mytouch 3g, which I rooted a few months into owning it, because with that phone there were so many glitches and so much lag that you had to root it to get it to work decently. And I wound up flashing a bunch of sense roms lol. But with this phone, it pretty much works and does everything I need it to out of the box.
With that said, do you guys really think it's still worth it to root for the non-rom-flashing benefits? i.e. setcpu and removal of bloatware? For my needs, I don't really feel like I need to overclock the phone, but I like the idea of underclocking to save battery...also, while the bloatware apps are annoying, it's not like they have taken away any functionality of the phone...I know everyone here's MO is "ROOT ASAP" but it seems like it's a little more complicated than it was for the MT3G, and while I'm not an idiot, I'm not really a tech-whiz either lol. Just not sure if it's worth the trouble and risk if I don't want/need to flash different roms.
I ran stock for a month and used ADW Launcher EX (normal version does this also) in order to hide the bloatware from the app drawer. This phone has so much power that for me it was out of sight out of mind with bloatware. I would assume LPP and other home replacement apps would have similar functions.
I flashed around a bit after rooting but always came back to stock, but then I switched to Orange Glacier by Faux123. It's stock, just quicker and debloated with some system apps moved in case you want to remove them also. IMO it's a bit better, but I still haven't decided how life changing it is His kernels def are.

I waited around 10 days before I rooted my phone just to get a nice feel of how things ran. yes I would definitely root if I were you. if you dont want to uninstall the bloatware, you can just freeze them with titanium. setcpu with a custom kernel underclocking with screen off will improve battery life as well(only OC to play games or view videos)

[Q] Why was is necessary to root your Nexus S?

I've been contemplating on rooting my Nexus S, since I've done so on my G2 and G1 since it was necessary since their stock roms were slow but I don't see anything wrong with the Nexus S at all. Also, I definitely think the unlock picture on a rooted Nexus S is ugly.
Anyways, post why it was necessary to root your Nexus S besides the fact that you're an android-fanatic
What do you use which needed root?
- Titanium Backup
- Flashing ROMs (Doesn't require root, but its a gateway toward flashing)
- Custom Kernels
Basically, I mess with my phone because stock is boring and not flashing/rooting your phone is well... BORING!
Exciten things up.
Let's not forget the amazing Chainfire 3D!
My first move is always rooting and flashing a stock deodex rom so I can theme it.
Also I use apps for security as well like droid wall, orbot, lbe privacy guard, my backup pro, lookout, which mostly require root.

I have not found a compelling reason to root yet, either.
I rooted both my previous Galaxy S and Vibrant, but that was because they were performing poorly and Samsung is the worst at upgrading their [email protected] software.
But the Nexus S has been pretty stable and I've seen nothing to make me root and play with ROMs (and I am weary of getting back into the WM6 cycle of constantly flashing, hoping that the next build will be the one stable one....)
I have settled on MIUI.ADW.Launcher as my default (using Suave HD icons http://macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16804800, which I actually like better than the MIUI ROM), so I really can't see a reason (yet) for going through the hassle of rooting and flashing with this one.
really thats what this whole community is based on, if you are not gonna root it, then you CANT do anything thats discussed here at XDA. I mean I dont even hesitate to root a phone as soon as I get it. Actually make sure I can root a device before I buy it
Yeah, I always think like that too, espcially with htc devices I love pure android and if i were to get any htc or custom skinned phones I would root to change rom but the nexus s non rooted is pretty stable and looking at the rom development in nexus s, majority of it is AOSP-based. but thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll stick to non-rooted until something cool pop ups that needs root or if i wanna further customize
ps: Man saying this, I feel like a traitor to xda and I shouldn't even be here lol

Rooted and have some questions

Let me start off by saying I am not in any way new to Android or rooting (I don't know why I felt like adding that, but I did).
Anyway, today I rooted and installed the Voodoo Lag Fix. Are there any NOTICEABLE changes? Everything seems to be just as slow or fast (however you want to describe it), and the colors seem to be the same (I read that it enhances colors).
Also, I want to keep my phone running quick, so I want as few apps installed as possible, but I also didn't root for nothing. SO: if I remove bloat that's safe to remove, will I have any problems taking the Gingerbread OTA when it comes out? I remember the DROID X used to check for all bloatware or else the update would fail. Also, are there any good root apps to check out? I know about most of them, but anything specifically recommended for the Charge? I've never overclocked because I read it can overheat the phone, but I guess if it IS a better experience, I should give it a go, right? What's the recommended overclock setting?
And finally, should I accept the GB OTA when it comes to us? Will the rooting method be the same, just with different files?
I know it's a lot but I'd really like some answers. Thanks in advance!
Lots of questions in one paragraph.
I would suggest taking a look at flashing with the Gummy or Humble Rom, they both have bloatware stripped.

I have used both, and they both work very well.
No idea when GB OTA will be released but I'm sure if you do it OTA you will get extra bloatware. It is safe to OC the charge to 1300mhz.
