[Q] basic rooting questions - Droid 2 Global General

ok so i know this has been beaten to death but iv tried reading all kinds of different posts and am getting confused trying to piece everything together.
so thanks in advance for any help/answers
1. what does rooting do? i know it gives you 'superuser' access but what does that really mean? what can i do with that access?
2. i've already done the latest verizon OTA update and i cant find z4root in the market. how do i install or run the app from my computer?
3. is the only custom rom for d2g right now the fission rom?
4. what is all this stuff about titanium backup and clockwork? what do they do and are they necessary to flash a custom rom? (dont worry, ill wait for the SBF)
thanks again

1. Rooting allows you to do changes to the system that you otherwise aren't allowed to do, some apps, such as titanium backup and setcpu require you to have root.
2. Z4root isn't in the market anymore, you need to download it from a browser on your phone and install it manually, make sure to check unknown sources in settings>applications
3. Yes

4. Titanium backup can be used to backup your apps, so if you install a new rom, you don't have to go and download them all from the market again. The recovery is so you can install other roms and other goodness.

You guys and girls know the deal...dont have time for a big post.
Radio issue fixed with some other improvements
Can you be a bit more precise in the exact changes?
Is there going to be an easy way to upgrade I hopes? :s
I'm running 1.0 now and absolutely LOVE it. The Dialer issue is a bit obnoxious, but workable. I just hope I don't have to completely re-flash and start over... again.
@librarat - Agreed. I was literally about to flash 1.0 and saw this was available. I'd hate to have to set up everything all over again. A simpler upgrade would be much appreciated.
is this a wipe or non wipe?
Feedback
Has anyone installed yet and tested? Feedback and thoughts? Just trying to get a feel before I put it on the D2. Thanks
According to the X forums, its a flashover, not a full reeflash. A dev response would be appreciated, though.
I just 1.0 werkin' and don't want to start all over again.

I flashed over 1.0 without any issues. I don't notice much of a difference.

yeah its the same really dialer is better though....... calibrate compass bug no fix yet......
Is 1.1 a full ROM, that can be installed standalone, or do we need to start with 1.0 and then go up to 1.1? Just a sanity check
My guess would be, that it is a full ROM. But, alas, I will wait for some more information on this ROM before I flash over 1.0.

BACKUP your phone using Bootstrap before installing any ROMs so you can go back to your current setup if anything fails. Notice I said that TWICE!!!
1. Download and place ROM on SD Card
2. Open Bootstrap and tap Bootstrap Recovery
3. Reboot into Recovery
4. Create Backup
5. Mount System
6. Wipe Cache -You may choose not to wipe but MAY have problems
7. Wipe Data - You may choose not to wipe but MAY have problems
8. Mount System and Data - Yes double check that both are MOUNTED (Reads UNMOUNT when MOUNTED)
9. Install Zip from SD Card
10. Choose Zip from SD Card
11. Select your ROM
12. Yes - Install
13. Wipe Cache Again - You may choose not to wipe but MAY have problems
14. Wipe Data Again - You may choose not to wipe but MAY have problems
15. Perform a Factory Reset through Android - Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset. Wiping Cache and Data from recovery is not enough.
16. Reboot
17. Enjoy!

You also have to be rooted and have installed Koush's recovery bootstraper, which can be had either in the market for a donation or from here http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/08/droid-x-recovery.html. For root instructions, see the stickied threads about rooting

+1. Thanks for the assistance post with this. Mike, I would recommend searching the forums for topics such as these as there are multiple topics that are already available with detailed explanations.
I know how to do a full install, i'm running fission 1.0. I thought there might be a way to "flash" the update without having start over. I just dont feel like doing a full wipe again.
When I installed 1.0 and went to my downloads in the market there were only a handful in the list. I had to try to remember all the apps I had downloaded and manually find them and download them. I have just today gotten things back to normal.
I don't want to have to go thru this every couple days after some minor updates. I'm really liking fission 1.0

These are full flashes from what I can see and you will have to do it this way each time. If you download the app through the market, the market will restore your apps after you sign into your gmail.

I understand where he was coming from. It happened to me when I flashed 1.1 coming from what I had. The market only restored about 65% of the apps I had installed. What people need to download is Titanium Backup. Its probably the main app any rooted phone should have installed. You can set a schedule to backup apps and their data daily (or however often you want); when you restore Titanium Backup after flashing a new ROM all you have to do is a "batch" and tell it what you want it to restore and it will restore everything for you. For example; I have HandcentSMS, with custom settings and it restores the app and all its settings.
Its a very helpful app to have

I'm pretty sure on either the Alpha, Beta, or RC1 posts for Fission they said not to use Titanium (or any other backup program) when going from any other ROM to Fission. Would imagine though that going from 1.0 to 1.1 titanium would work just fine though.

[Q] custom recovery

ok so im new to android and still trying to quickly figure things out.
i have the droid2bootstrap.apk on my computer but am tryin to read all about it before i use it. this will work for the D2G right?
so what exactly does it do? what is "reboot recovery"? does it make backups of the stock rom and apps on the SD card? how would i go about using the backup if necessary? do i also need titanium backup to delete the bloatware?
please be detailed and gentle
thanks

It hijacks the booting process and if a flag is put up (by the system or by the bootstraps application) then the phone will boot into the Clockwork mod recovery so that one can flash ROM's or backup and restore the current ROM.
"reboot recovery" "reboot[s into] recovery" from the current ROM so that one can do the aforementioned tasks.
Backing up just involves getting into recovery via the bootstrap app then going into the "backup and restore" menu and choosing backup and then confirming and the current ROM is backed up to the sdcard.
If you want to after that backup has been made and you get back into the ROM you can place a copy on your computer just in case your sdcard becomes messed up you can still get your backup. If your phone becomes inoperable then you have to get that working first but you can restore your backup after the phone is in working software condition.
If you want to remove apps you only need root access and a root file manager or Terminal emulator (I prefer because it's free) Titanium is best if you only want to freeze apps which is the best case if the SBF isn't available and you want to be able to get updates in the future but it has other uses as well mostly to back up data and applications.
*These views are from a D2 owner not a D2 Global owner feel free to specify more specifically if there are parts of this that don't fit the D2 G (I assume they do but I have not tested otherwise) You are responsible for your phone and the things that you do (thank goodness for the recent release of the SBF for the D2 G!!)
Awesome thanks for the help

How To: Backup Your Apps, Data & Settings BEFORE You Root/Change ROMs on Your Device!

How To: Backup Your Apps, Data & Settings BEFORE You Root/Change ROMs on Your Device!
I recently rooted my Evo 4G and since I had been using it for a while didn't want to lose all of my settings and data and didn't want to sit for hours installing apps and trying to set them each up the way I had them beforehand. None of the root guides that I've found seem to cover this critical first step before they get into the process of rooting the device. So a lot of people root and flash a new ROM and then realize all of their stuff is gone. So, here's how to back everything up before you root or change ROMs:
1) Locate/Download/Install Z4Root to your device. (It appears as though it was removed from the market due to people using it to get temp root in order to use hot spot tethers. The apk can be found in a thread on this forum here)
2) Install Titanium Backup from the market (I recommend the full version because it makes the restore process a one touch option whereas the free one requires you to click 'Install' and then 'confirm' for each individual app which can be a royal PITA if you have lots of apps)
3) Install 'Root Check' from the market
4) Launch Z4 and use to gain temporary root access of your device. Use Root Check to make sure you indeed do have root access.
5) Launch Titanium Backup and grant superuser permissions where necessary
6) Click the center option at the top of the screen after Titanium checks all possible scenarios. Scroll through the options and find the option (usually has the highest number on the right... or real close to it) that backs up all your apps + system data and settings. Allow it to complete this process which can take a bit.
7) Once this is complete back out of Titanium Backup and reboot your device. This will remove the temporary root access from the device. When the device has settled run Root Check one last time to make sure don't have root access.
8) Proceed with your favorite root/ROM process & enjoy not having to waste hours setting up your phone again the way you had it. When you recover make sure you chose the option to recover all missing apps and all data/settings because if you choose to recover ALL apps you can run into issues with the apps it tries to override.
Now, sometimes there are minor issues from ROM to ROM or device to device when you backup from one platform and then recover on another but for the most part it will save you a LOT of time. You can also try a reboot or two after you recover which can help with some settings that don't show up immediately after a recover. I did this before rooting my Evo 4G and it worked flawlessly.
Thanks and hopefully that helps.
Cool. I never thought about backing up while in temp root. Good find.

Should be fine as it's still just app data. I haven't personally tested it to confirm though so proceed at your own risk.

Root and then Unroot For Secure Email

This may seem like a basic question to you guys.
I work in an industry where our emails our monitored.
We now have the ability to get emails on android phones instead of only being able to use blackberry.
The email is transmitted securely by an app called GOOD.
GOOD will not work on rooted phones.
Can I root & remove bloatware & then unroot ? Or does it all come back?
I assume the phone has to be rooted to run a custom ROM?
Apologies if these are basic questions
Check out this thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
The steps to follow would be to:
1) Install clockworkmod recovery using the one-click recovery flasher that tga gunmann has posted in the development section.
2) Download the 2 zips that jboxer posted in the thread I linked to above and save them to the sdcard on your phone
3) Using clockworkmod recovery flash the root zip and then reboot into Android.
4) Use Root Explorer or some other file explorer with root access and get rid of whatever bloatware you don't want.
5) Reboot into clockworkmod recovery and flash the unroot zip.
6) Reboot phone
That will allow you root access to make any system changes and then unroot the phone to remove su privileges.
Yes u can root and remove bloat with titanium back up then unroot and then the bloat will still be gone. Also I believe u can unroot certain roms. Not sure

I am about to get good next week hopefully , will post back.
I wonder why it wouldn't work on rooted phone's though?
It detects the presence of the su binary among other things and refuses to run.

[Q] Finished rooting with oneclickrcovery...few questions on roms.

1) The first Rom I flashed was eagleblood. I put it on my SD card from my computer, then I put the SD card back in my phone and did the rest from there. Can we flash Roms without using the computer like if we download right to our phones on the website and then flash?
2)Eagleblood is the first and only Rom I looked at and flashed so far but after clicking the eagleblood link, there was about 7 or 8 different downloads. I guess I got lucky and chose the right one so I'm assuming the others were updates. So for the future, how do I distinguish between them and know which is the actual Rom download link?
3) Which is the best Rom?
4) How do I get my home screen to show in landscape view since I'm rooted now?
5) When flashing from Rom to Rom, how do I get all my apps, phone settings, and everything else back without having to take an hour to resetup everything? Can you explain the procedure if you are going to recommend an app for this? Right now I downloaded the free version of titanium backup so I'm assuming that would be it. I see where you can back stuff up with this app, but after switching Roms, how do I restore if the flashing of the new Rom will erase titanium?
6) Which apps would you guys recommend uninstalling from eagleblood that wont hurt anything?
Thanks guys.

1. Yes
2. The newest one. Look at the version numbers.
3. That's up to you to decide for yourself. Nobody's preferences are the same.
4.You could have done this before. It depends on what launcher you are using most of the time. Play around in the launcher settings.
5.Get the paid version of titanium. Use it to backup user apps+data. Settings and system apps don't normally respond well to a new rom. After you flash something new, get on the market and just download titanium again. Restore from your backup afterwards. All your apps+data will be back. Your phone settings need to be done manually to avoid errors.
6.If you're unsure about uninstalling apps, get the paid version of titanium and freeze the app instead. If it screws something up then defrost.
All of this info is already here. Poke around a little more.

Thanks for all the answers. How do we do it from phone?
I believe EB has a mobile site, so just navigate to it using your browser and download the appropriate files. They'll wind up on the SD card where you can just flash through CWM.
what ever you download from the browser it'll show up in SD cards/Downloads... it'll be in there and then from there you can move it or you can navigate from the CWM to there

Who or what is "EB"?
As for your answer to number 4......how do you get to the launcher settings? I'm not sure what those are.
EaglesBlood
and some launchers have a custom settings built in some don't, including the stock EB launcher!
