Android Brower Issue-multiple pop up windows - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey Guys,
I have an issue with some of the browsers available for the android phone.
I would like to access work through my phone via VPN web access. I am sucessfull at this.
When I open my work page, it opens up in a popup window. This is okay too as I allow pop ups under settings.
The issue is, when I click on a case in this pop up window, there is an error thats comes up saying"Cannot open another pop up window, only one pop up window at a time". It is trying to open up my case in another pop up window, which it blocks.
I have used froyo 2.2 on a Nexus one, dell streak, galaxy s tab and motorola droid.
I also used Dolphin HD and Dolphin, with the same results.
I downloaded opera, and there was not even an option for allowing pop ups.
Do you guys have any ideas?
I would like to be able to do my work with out having to lug around a laptop everywhere I go.
Thanks again and Happy Holidays!
Maluman

I would love to find out if this is an Android restriction or there are indeed browsers that support multiple pop ups (or can be tweaked to do so). There are some legit websites that actually rely on pop ups for various purposes (chat rooms for example). Old fashioned and annoying yes, but why punish the end users for it?

Darn, I have the same issue on my HTC EVO. My work website uses pop-ups, but I can't open the link on the pop-up that uses another pop-up! All legitimate pop-ups, not ad-ware. There must be a way to allow trusted sites or something.

Is there a solution to this issue??
Has anyone found an answer/fix to this issue? It is definitely an Android issue b/c I have the new HTC Sensation running Android Gingerbread 2.3, and everyone I know w/ an Android phone from 2 years ago to present has had this same issue....we can not open more than 1 popup window at a time. Like all have posted in this thread, I'm trying to access a number of different applications within my job's website (SWAlife - website for Southwest Airlines employees but specifically for flight attendants to change/trade their trips) and it relies on opening popups within popups but it just doesn't work w/ Android devices.
I've tried the stock browser, Dolphin, Opera mini, Skyfire, rotating the phone horizontally, keeping the setting in Landscape only mode while browsing, and of course, allowing Popups in the browser settings. I also need the browser to allow double-clicks to be just that - a double-click.....not a zoom in and out function.
Please, can someone tell me if there is a fix somewhere to this problem??? I'm interested in buying the new Samsung Galaxy S II but refuse to if I'm not able to access all elements of my job's website. Oh, and someone made a SWAlife app that's accessible with iPhone only (works perfectly & allows popups to open within popups) but I HATE to have to buy an iPhone just b/c of this app. :-(
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!!

You know the SWAlife app is in the Android market too, but you will not be able to check the overtime call out list, not built in to the app yet, same with from iPhone app.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

Yea, I've used the Android SWAlife app for some time but it only employees to make non-rev listings, provides company news and operational updates. No Crew Web Access or FA scheduling. In otherwords, this app is pretty useless :-( The one for iPhone, however, is EXACTLY what we need for Android. It allows pilots and FAs to manipulate their schedules in CWA (Inflight Crew Web Access)....it looks identical to what's in SWAlife on the web and functions just as if you were on a PC. Are you aware of another app in the Market that I might be missing that allows that? Thanks for your help!

I know this is an old problem, but try xScope browser in the market. I needed to be able to open more than one popup window and the website I was trying and failing to access with about 10 other browsers would not work until I tried this one.

I have the same problem. Your tip sounds good. I will give this browser a try. I hope that the search has an end.

This browser works for my sites where I need more than one pop-up. Thanks for the valuable information.

Blackboard Application

I'm looking for a Blackboard Application for Android (obviously). If you don't know what the program is here is a link. It's used for class work at a lot of colleges. There is a mobile app available for iPhone and I believe one is in development for Blackberry.
http://www.blackboard.com/
I previously have worked with Blackboard as both a student and an instructor. Aside from the fact that Blackboard, eLearning, WebCT, etc are all crappy tools, I believe their API for access is completely closed off so developing an Android app relies mostly on Blackboard's end to develop it.
I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but there are other tools on the web like Blackboard that provide your own private course set up to keep track of your documents for class, etc. If you just keep on top of what's being uploaded for Bloackboard then you can keep a pretty nice management suite for all of your coursework, but it obviously won't be up to date with what your teacher uploads.
I hope you find something that works, cause I've looked into this myself. Let me know if you have any luck.
If I recall, blackboard is basically implemented as a website.
That being the case, just point your browser at it and be done.

Yes I figured as much. I wrote blackboard on the situation and I've not received a response and I don't think that I should. I had heard however that certain rooted Android based phones are able to run iPhone apps. I don't know if thats because of developers converting the apps or there is actually an emulator available.

That was my initial attempt actually. Their are various plugins with the site that make that complicated. The website rejects logins from mobiles. I actually have trouble accessing the website unless I'm using either Firefox or IE.

You sure about it rejecting mobile sites? I do remember accessing the site via Opera Moblie 9.5 beta(when it was just leaked) on my WM phone and via Opera Mini 4 with out an issue.

Yes it actually has to do with the school. While Blackboard is run via a website that website is administered by the school. The school I go to blocks all connections from cell phones for some reason. I've spoken to the IT support guys but they don't seem to care about working with me. I'm transferring schools next semester so hopefully I won't have to worry about it after that.
Im not positive, but i am pretty sure i have accessed blackboard with my mytouch. i am running CM 4.2.8 and enochx. what you have to do is go into the browser and go into settings, there is an option called mobile web settings and in there you can choose desktop and it makes you phone like a regular browser. thats what worked for me, hope it works for you too.
Works on Dolphin for me, check my grades there often.
I have also been able to access blackboard just fine on the default browser and Dolphin Browser.
A stand alone app would be cool, but would require alot of work and possibly authentication from the school? which would not happen
I use blackboard with my g1 browser quite often. I cannot say that there are no problems, but can that ever be said in regards to blackboard?
as a student I've used Blackboard, WebCT and Moodle..and i gotta say I found Moodle to be the coolest (and as I recall it's open source).
Anyway, if your school blocks connection from mobile phones, you can use the Dolphin Browser (or the default one if it's modded) and change the user-agent to Desktop instead of Android. Maybe that would work?
Bb on G1
It's always been a bucket of headaches, but i can confirm that perseverance pays off. The main issue is endless loop/failure on trying to login. My most reliable way around this is by accessing my school's main student portal page first and after logging in there, using the Blackboard course link. Kind of a backdoor in but if your school provides that sort of portal, it's worth a shot. Also FYI, when I had a BlackBerry I never had any luck with stock browser, but Opera always worked. Good luck, hope this helped.
so apparently there is a Sprint only Blackboard app out now for Android phones, does anyone know why it's only for Sprint phones or if it'll ever be a standard market app?
YES!! my school has quite a bit of trouble working blackboard, and there are always issues getting students into class, allowing them to see the class shell etc... And on dolphin I can check it, but sometimes it would block me. This app is extremely needed. Sucks its only on sprint....but I'm glad i got a sprint hero!
I am desperately trying to find this app so I cant install it on my phone even though i am with T-mobile.

Why doesn't someone just use skyfire, let's you fool a page that you're a desktop and not a phone.

[Q] Chrome to (multiple) phone

Does anyone know how Chrome to Phone reacts with multiple devices?
I have Chrome to phone nicely working on both home/work laptops and Chrome to Phone on my phone
but now I have a Xoom I'd like to be able to push links to either phone or xoom depending on what I am planning on using... I recently tweeted a link from laptop to pick up on Xoom... when I thought it'd be simplier to C2P it...
Had a quick google and search on the forum but couldn't see any/many people doing it without logging out and logging in and using multiple accounts...
just a simple 'where do you want to send the link' a bit like the Android Market works would be good enough...
Thanks
Have the same question! Got a phone+xoom and unfortunately the one i install chrome-to-phone apk the last is the device that gets "registered". no way to choose the device to which to send to!
bummer!
It sends to both. I can't see a way to change it.
Sent from my phone
I wonder if its something we can bug google to add as a feature in an upcoming update...
Would so love to see something like this - send either to my phone or my tablet: it makes perfect sense! Wonder why nobody has made anything like this?
Apparently more than one extension exists for this function.
Use the correct extension, this allows for selecting a device from all recognised devices in your Google profile:
Google support page:

Chrome to Mobile extension:

[Q] javascript / browser security advice.

Hey guys, I'm currently using a HTC sensation with the default browser.
The other day a website I was on redirected me to an untrustworthy site which then (via javascript) started an automatic download (virus) I quickly killed my connection and deleted the partial download.
So on my PC I run Google chrome with a "click to play" plugin to avoid rogue javascripts, I am looking for something similar for my phone.
I know chrome is available for my phone however it does not support flash player which is a requirement, I am aware my current browser has a "on demand" option for plugins but I have tested it and it doesn't work.
I tried opera today and couldn't get along with it.
Could anyone tell me the best way to control what gets downloaded from websites on my phone.
Thankyou in advance for any helpful replies. D
I mean, maybe I have been amiss, but I was under the longstanding impression that hijacks, viruses, and all such malware really didn't effect Linux systems. Like, at all.
Well I don't know much about these operating systems but an executable that downloads itself is not something I want on my phone, regardless of its capabilities.
It was an android application package I do not know if its able to extract itself or if it relies on the user to click on it in the download section, don't know what it installs but I'd rather not find out.

[Q] Java script and browser woes

The question I have is, what the hell is wrong with android and java scrivpt ? every browser I try has problems with executing java based content. The stock browser and browser plus seem to take a holiday whenever they want. Text fields seem to migrate all over the page, and refuse to input text. If it does by some miracle it does work, selecting the next field is a crap shoot if it will work or wonk out. Is there a decent browser that doesnt choke on java ?
Try firefox (beta) or chrome.

Java and Javascript are two very different languages, Java is a language to be run on a VM (a modified version is actually used to run android) and Javascript is a scripting language used in webpages. Android does not support running Java apps, but that is not what you are asking. For your Javascript issues the default browser or chrome should do fine, the default browser has a user friendly way to always use desktop sites that you might want to check to have pages behave more like normal pages than mobile pages if you haven't already changed it.
My mistake about java and java script. I am more of a hardware guy than a software guy. I usually try to use the desktop site if I can. The problem I have is usually with a popup form of some kind. Comcast and Espn use simular forms. Using chrome works for most sites, but it is by no means the perfect browser. It is frustrating as of late the number of sites that seem to choke this tablet. Having 4 cores seems to have little benefit in rendering the webpage. Case in point, my dual core Sensation phone runs the desktop sites faster than this tablet.
I am having same issues (well my wife is). We purchased this device in hopes of it being able to double for her online classes and to take with us when out & about to entertain the kids when they do not want to sit still in restaurant etc. She is able to login into her site for school but when it comes to pop ups, applets and such it does not work. The tablet did receive the jellybean update and was hoping someone could offer some assistance in getting it working. I am somewhat a tech savvy guy and have turned on javascript, allowed popups, tried multiple browsers like dolphin, skyfire, the preloaded one, boat and none seem to allow her to do anything. I have not tried rooting or placing any sort of cooked roms in fear of messing it up. any help of steering in correct direction would be of greatest help.

Now are you using the stock browser or Chrome? Chrome might be better on account I think most sites see chrome as the desktop version and has better compatibility. Just make sure to use desktop version in the settings.

[Q] ICS and javascript

Since upgrading to ICS several days ago, two websites that I frequently visit on my tab are malfunctioning - seems to be javascript-related and somewhat browser independent. The sites are pcworld.com and nbcnews.com. In general, on pcworld.com, links don't work. Nothing happens when I tap them (they do highlight in light blue - that's all). On nbcnews.com, which forces the mobile site using some browsers, the links to stories and the down arrow to "show more stories" don't work. Both of these situations (pcworld and nbcnews) exist for the stock browser, Dolphin, and Chrome (also installed and tried Maxthon and Skyfire just to check - same issue there), but both sites work fine in Firefox and Opera. However, if I disable javascript in Dolphin, pcworld.com works fine, and I can link to stories on nbcnews. The "show more stories" in nbcnews.com still doesn't work but the screen behaves a bit differently when I tap it. Chrome, by the way, pretty much goes non-functional if I disable javascript in it - none of the browser control buttons such as bookmarks, recent sites, etc. work at all.
Pcworld was definitely working before going to ICS. I think nbcnews had gotten a little squirrelly. My conclusion that it's a javascript issue is based on the fact that disabling javascript restores link function to pcworld and at least to the nbcnews.com stories. Any thoughts?

I am currentlyon stock ICS DDLP5. it works fine with the stock browser. Also works with dolphin, firefox chrome and opera. No issues.
So now some people are actually getting the update from Verizon, and these websites seem to be working fine for them. I upgraded per Electron73's post. What might be different about my tab now than those who are getting upgraded by Verizon that would cause this issue?
Is it possible that the problem is that Electron73's instructions by which I upgraded to ICS result in a rooted device? I'm totally ignorant of this stuff and have no idea what possible problems could arise from being rooted. If that could be the problem, how can I unroot? I have no need to be rooted.
rooting only opening an acces to the device with administrator account... it only put 2 files to your device... one is a program to govern the root... superuser or supersu and another one is system/xbin/su binary files. that's it... to fully unroot you just need to delete this 2 files from your device.

Thanks. I've done that now. I didn't really think that would fix my problem, and it didn't.
I've read that people who got their tab updated by Verizon / Samsung (many by sending them in) have i815.07 V.LP10 / I815LP10 (note the .07) vs. the .04 that I have installed. Possible issue?

That's what I'm thinking. I wish electron could get an updated version. My wife is tired of seeing some elements on some of her favorite websites just not show up (images, links, etc). No way I'm unrooting until Verizon/Samsung get their OTA mess sorted out though.
As I mentioned, the websites that aren't working for me are failing in the stock browser, dolphin, chrome, and every other browser I've tried except Firefox, Opera, and now Puffin. Tonight I stumbled upon how to view the javascript console in the stock browser. When I view the javascript console after attempting to follow a link to an article on pcworld.com, I see a long ULR (with static.ak.facebook.com in the middle), followed by the console message "Given URL is now allowed in the Application configuration.: One or more of the given URLs is not allowed by the App's settings. It must match the Website URL or Canvas URL, or the domain must be a subdomain of one of the App's domains." there is a different message about Viewport argument value "device-width;" when I try to navigate the mobile nbcnews.com website. Pcworld works fine if I disable javascript; on the nbcnews mobile site, I can link to articles with javascript disabled but I still can't "Show more stories." Wierdly, about every 1000 tries or so (literally), a link or "Show more stories" will randomly work with javascript enabled, but only for one try.
Any ideas??
Yet another issue - hitting the back button in the stock browser, Dolphin, etc., usually doesn't take me to the previous visited webpage; it just reloads the current page (with some exceptions). If not for Opera and Firefox, my tab would basically be useless for web browsing. (Interestingly, Chrome does not have this issue even though it shares the stock browser and Dolphin's issue of not being able to follow links on nbcnews.com, pcworld.com, etc.) I like the device but am starting to wonder if I should give it up... Any idea if reverting to Honeycomb (!) would restore web browsing? HC was crap but at least I could use the browser.
Based on a little back and forth with Dolphin support and some deductive reasoning, it seems clear to me that any webkit-based browser is going to give me the same issues. I read this morning that Opera is getting ready to abandon its in-house web engine in favor of webkit. That will leave me with just Firefox and Puffin (which some say is insecure and in any case lacks a lot of basic features), neither of which I really like using.
So something seems inherently broken in webkit in the i815.04 V.LP10 version of ICS I have installed. I suppose many don't use their tablets extensively for web browsing so maybe this isn't an issue for most users, but I do browse a lot with it and now feel like my tab is "broken" (sort of the way I felt with Honeycomb that prompted me not to wait for Verizon to fix its failed update). I went so far as to buy a Nexus 7 yesterday morning, but I really didn't like the display and returned it in the afternoon.
I think in Electron73's post there was a link to a download that could be applied to return the tab to Honeycomb. Is that true, and if so has anyone tried reverting and then getting ICS through the OTA update? (It seems that people who have v.07 instead of .04 don't have the browsing problems I've been posting about.) If I reverted to Honeycomb (assuming that's possible) and couldn't get the update OTA, would Verizon / Samsung detect that it had been modified if I tried to get the update by sending it in as so many have had to do? Any other thoughts on possible fixes? Obviously I am pretty ignorant...

It seems as if my browsing issues may not be similar to what you're experiencing. What I was seeing on my wife's was images not showing up on certain shopping websites (no matter what browser she used) , and sponsored links not working in Google searches. I discovered the problem: the hosts file is NOT stock, and is set to block a lot of sites, or elements within them. I removed every entry in the file except for 127.0.0.1 localhost, and EVERY problem she was having has disappeared!

It was a bit of a PITA at first since none of my edits would stick. Finally found an app called Hosts Editor Pro in the Store. Soon as you open it up, it seems to replace the current file with a very basic one. Once I rebooted after that, I checked the contents of the file, and only the one entry was there.

So do you happen to know if she can follow links on the sites I mentioned (nbcnews.com, pcworld.com) without any problem? And go back to the previous page by hitting the back button? I think one person replied to my original question that they could not, but I'm still trying to figure out if it's some anomaly or a universal result of updating to 4.0.4 in this manner.

I think one person replied to my original question that they could not, but I'm still trying to figure out if it's some anomaly or a universal result of updating to 4.0.4 in this manner.

Tried both sites, and every action you described, and both sites work perfectly, pop-up ads and all.
When you flashed electrons build, did you use the wipe version, or not?

I tried to no-wipe first, but it hung for about a half hour, so I went back and did the wipe version.
I've given up on it. I'm giving the tab to my daughter, who won't care about a few browsing incoveniences. I went to Verizon today and bought a new one. I was nervous because I planned to return it if it wouldn't get ICS OTA and they said there would be a $70 restocking fee. But when they stuck the SIM card in and started setup, I could see that it already had ICS on it (the bright blue circle was spinning). The setup didn't look fresh (didn't start with the setup wizard or whatever it's called -- booted directly into the default homepage), even though the tab was sold as new and certainly appears to be. Also, Baseband is i815.04, not .07. My uneducated guess is that the've taken new ones in the warehouse that had Honeycomb and flashed ICS, then shipped them to the stores, so they won't have to deal with all the the returns.
