[Q] mmorpg's? - Android Apps and Games

there are some good ones out, but the iPhone has some better ones. WTF.
and where is AWPlanet at?

Go email the big iphone games makers.

They'll come in time, Android is still maturing and luring more developers into it's fold.

that's the advantage of iphone to us. but the 2.3 will be focused on gaming so maybe more games will come to adroid.

As the amount of Android activations grows by 300k+ per day... They'd be outright fools to not port to Android. Tons of $ to be made at Android.
Honestly they can stay away for now gives us smaller developers more room for 'notice'.

Android Dies Tommarrow?

Will Android Die tommarrow once the Iphone is announced for Verizon? I think so. As a former 5 time Android phone user I cant wait. I gave the robot every chance. But without the support of Devs making applications an OS is useless.
Enjoy!

Do they use cdma in other parts of the world?

... must ... not ... correct bad spelling ...
Yeah -- have fun with your iPhone then.
HA It wont be dieing for me. I would never pick a iPhone over an android. Android so much more flexible and inventive in my humble opinion.

Tomorrow does not have an 'a' in it.
And no, the iPhone will not kill the Android no matter what carrier signs it. iPhones share the same traits as Macs -- pretty, easy to use, and nearly idiot-proof -- but the more advanced and adept users will always gravitate towards Android (linux) and Corporate users towards Windows.
Besides, iPhones to date have been overpriced and, like Macs, the only way you can run their OS is on their hardware. Android runs on everything from tablets to mp3 players to cell phones across a variety of manufacturers.
I mean, you're essentially asking if Betty Crocker Instant Mashed Potatoes are going to hurt the sale of spuds. The only real answer is a smack in the mouth.

HA! no support from the devs? Try owning a palm pre. I just ditched one for the new evo shift, and so far I am LOVING the amount of support for android
Please don't feed the troll!
you see now I never asked which was a better os......i stated that without support from TRUE developers making apps a OS is no Good. Android has a horrible market which rarely works. The apps are 2 year old ports from the iphone. As far as the pre i think it has the best os just horrible hardware.
Look at what Nividia showed running on the Tegra chips at CES.....1 year old PORTS of games that run on the Iphone perfectly.
Hardware is fine and dandy but NO SUPPORT guys. Its sad.
I honestly beleive once the iphone comes to verizon noone on BigRed will ever buy an android again. Atleast the common user. Well see soon. This is gonna be fun!!!!!!

This is just blatantly wrong, so go troll somewhere else -- there's lots of big-name developers on Android, including some from the iPhone world.
And yes, there's lots of garbage on the android market, but it does work. Don't forget that Amazon will be launching their cleaned-up android market this year too.
@burtcom actually your proving my point. please show me ONE app that they focused on the TEGRA chips that isnt on the Iphone??? Please name one? Also Amazon market??? Ummm where is it? Ohhhh its not here yet....oh ok Let me know when it is!
Please name me the developers on Android...... Netflix (not yet)...Gameloft (ummm old ports from iphone) EA.....ummm wheres madden? Oh still in beta?
Dont talk when you have no clue!
Oh and if there are games on Gamelofts site (the Ports) there made for the droid phones and the resolution is way off wack!!! But enjoy
The US is the last place that the iPhone hasn't been available on multiple carriers. The rest of the world has carriers with both the iPhone and Android phones competing directly, and Android is still doing great there. A Verizon iPhone will probably put a dent in their Android handset sales, no doubt, but there's always going to be a segment of the market that want something cheaper, or more powerful.
So no, Android will be just fine after tomorrow.
And apps are not the be all end all. They only matter so much to iPhone because it's basically just a glorified app launcher with a few apps bundled in. You can't even see the current weather without launching an app.
OP, you do realize that the iPhone is available on many major carriers in the the rest of world, right? Do you seriously think the US has the biggest cellphone market? (The answer is no. I'm telling you this since you probably don't know the answer.) Android is still growing at a rapid rate and taking up market share in the rest of the world. We shall see how the iPhone 4 does IN THE US when it comes to Verizon. If iPhone 4 Verizon does destroy the Android, then Android will die ONLY in the US, not the rest of the world.
So what if many apps are ported from the iPhone? Why don't you ask why those developers are porting their apps over to Android if they don't see the potential of Android?
Technically, Android has the best developer that no iPhone developers can compare - Google itself. Where did iPhone's Maps and Youtube apps come from? Which OS has the better Google apps?
you see now I never asked which was a better os......i stated that without support from TRUE developers making apps a OS is no Good.

You didn't ask, you simply implied that iOS is better. People here are just disagreeing with you. And most of your arguments are surrounding the game department of the iOS. What else do you have? Even if you bring some more things on the table, you still can't argue what I wrote in my first few paragraphs. Enjoy the iPhone. I honestly think it is a great phone, but I hope you didn't type your posts using the iPhone. If so, learn how to fully use your iPhone please, otherwise it would just be a waste, no offense.
When people keep talking about apps apps apps for iPhone, they are just talking about games. Really, ask any iPhone users what awesome apps they are talking about that aren't games, and they will not have an answer for you. Or name apps that also exist on Android. Netflix? Yeah, its pretty cool. But its not like its been out all that long for iPhone, and the video selection is pretty limited, AND it will be out for Android anytime now, since it was already leaked at CES.
Seriously, how many games do you need? I love playing games as much (probably more) than the next guy. And there is plenty on Android, and developer support is growing. If you need more games than available on Android, its pretty likely that you need to spend more time on other activities besides playing little casual games on your phone.
Besides, not all developers are in love with Apple. Look at Adobe and PrimeSense (the original developer of the XBox 360 Kinect controller). These are important players, that were completely turned off by Apple's need to domineer and control, and eventually gave up on Apple.
The OP implies that the only reason that not everyone owns an iPhone, is because they are tied to Verizon. There are plenty of people like me that have been on AT&T forever, but have no interest in the iPhone. AT&T customer for over a decade, and I've never owned an iPhone, and never will. If Apple had their way, there would be no variety in hardware, or how we use our phones. There will always be people that find these types of limitations suffocating and unacceptable. Some of us like to have the choice of more than one form factor (say a larger screen, or a smaller one, or a hardware keyboard), or to have a homescreen that isn't just a near-useless grid of shortcuts. It would be a sad place where only one device could exist. Luckily, things don't work that way, and there is always room for competition in just about any business. So with any luck, Android won't be going anywhere soon.
Sure the iPhone is popular. But saying an OS is doomed just because its not the most popular platform, and doesn't have the most games, then that's the same as saying Mac computer shouldn't exist either.
Android won't die tomorrow
But troll should die today
I don't know about others but to me a cell its more like a helping hand or what ever you like to call it. Atleast for the tech lovers like me. But we all have different ways of doing our day to day stuffs. Android appreciates and compliments that. That's why I will go for Android. For the level of freedom it gives you, not how many new cookies it have in the box.

Smartphones

This is just...For the fun of it. I can enjoy a bit of philosophising once in a while. I was playing around with devices of almost every manufacturer (except Motorola, sorry), and thought about the particular quirks and advantages of smartphones.
It might be nice for me first to zoom out to the platform level. There are a few platforms used right now. WP7, Android, BB, iOS come to mind as the main ones. Most smartphones developed and sold are tailored towards a particular operating system. This defines their capabilities, their limitations, and their general goal during their lifespan.
I will address each briefly:
WP7: With the latest Mango, these phones are tailored to social networking. The Lumia 800, for example, is certainly an impressive device in that capacity.
Android: These phones tend to be for people who want to play around with their OS. They generally offer large touchscreens and fast dual-core processors (the latest phones do, at least). One of the dogmas seems to be multimedia ease. I will ask a question about such phones that I will get back to later: "Is there such a thing as too large?".
BB: These phones and the operating system they run on were designed with security in mind. They offer physical keyboards which are unrivalled. RIM also have the best data technology on the market. I like to think of BBs as having the functionality of bricks, but being as hard to take down as bricks as well. These phones are far behind everyone else, but I would state that they are very stable. They also are, potentially, the best phones. I use "phones" in the forgotten capacity: for making calls. They possess the best radios.
iOS: BE UNIQUE! Well, it somewhat worked until everyone and his grandmother had an iPhone. I, personally, despise lowercase "i"s, so have never been tempted that way. What do they offer? Apps. Many, many, many apps. Need I say more? Apple started out with a brilliant idea of how to sell products to the masses (yes, I am quite fond of The Affluent Society), but they have not improved much upon that idea since its inception.
These are obviously non-exhaustive notes. The general purpose of the information written above is to determine the role of smartphones.
Addressing Android, you have speed and power. But is it necessary? The Galaxy Note is awkward. The Galaxy SII is also reasonably so. These devices try to provide a Web and gaming experience, combined with all-around functionality. Sure, they have large screens in order to provide that experience, but a tablet can perform the same things better (refer to Asus Transformer Prime). Is there a point to those functions on a phone? I want to stress "phone" again, since it seems we have strayed so far from the functions of a phone.
Nokia have been producing quality plain handsets for a long time. They sell many of these to developing countries. Their place and their existence is, I believe, justified. Whether they are needed with WP7 is another matter.
Blackberry have always targeted businesses and sought to provide fast text inputs on their phones. Their devices are built like bricks, as I said previously. The BB infrastructure is more impressive than BB phones, in my opinion. Especially the Data compression.
Apple, well...Apple is Apple.
I can only peg down three categories: BB for infrastructure, Nokia for supplying the world with phones, Apple and Android for experimentation and multimedia aspects.
So what is the role of smartphones? Are they too developed for their own good? Typing on a 4.5'' screen in landscape mode will never fail to annoy me. Apple's watchful gaze is creepy. RIM's antipathy towards progress is strange.
This is actually quite well done and addresses the various brands and OS' without being extremely biased that i would be use to=D Bravo and I agree they all have their place

Thanks!
Hoping that a few people will want to post their opinions and discuss. After all, we are passionate about smartphones. Otherwise we would not be on here.
Thought I would add something on my "brick" line of thinking. I and a friend got two different phones at approximately the same time in 2008. I got the BlackBerry Storm 9530. He got the HTC Dream (or G1, whichever you prefer to call it). Mine looks, feels, functions as if brand new. His is in a sorry state.

For site about smartphones, I would have thought more people would be interested in this topic. But I suppose I am targeting obsessions...Try telling an iPhone user that iPhones are not the best, or that they are not particularly unique.
What is a phone??? Lol but seriously I do agree we have strayed far away from the cellphone era. We have entered a new age that began in 2005, which I like to refer to as the connected age. With the growing number of smartphone users it is easy to track down anyone you want. Everyone is connected to everyone. Our phones grow larger in size every 6months. I remember when I wanted the smallest most compact flip phone. The bigger it was the uglier it was. Now.... anything under 4.3 inches I cant even use lol. I predict in ten years smartphones will be non existing. It will be converted to tabs. U can buy a tablet for half the price of a brand new sgs2.

I disagree with tablets being "better" that smartphones or smartphones being replaced by tablets, not everyone can or want to travel with a tab everywhere
A phones portability will trump most of times(a quick pic, quick vid, listening to music, browsing in the crapper, etc)
What i mean is that your not always able to go with a carrying bag(well girls can) or a notebook sized thing in your hands, thats when the mini tab in ur pocket comes to use
Might not be as good as a tablet for somethings but its still performs ok and makes calls, and its very easy to carry around
On the other hand, if the tablets are to replace something, is the laptop

OP: you don't seem to understand that people in this era want more than just a phone, if you are complaining that smartphones these days are too advanced to be a phone, then go and get a nokia from 1998 and stop posting on XDA.
The only argument I have is that in which you seem to feel that Blackberry devices are superior in terms of security. I disagree, and also feel that a SPoF has finally shown blackberry devices to be vastly inferior in terms of both security and content delivery.
Food for thought: the US Gov't has finally decided to branch out from the bricks of yesteryear, and now are starting to allow iOS, W*, and A* devices on the AEN with server side security policy implementation. That's saying a lot since they've previously only allowed a BBD on the AEN as all other devices "couldn't be secured". Kinda hard to secure a RIM server in Canada...

It is not that I am a great fan of BlackBerry. It is just that I am very uneasy about Androids. What is to say you will not be charged $1,000 on your next bill due to an exploit allowing premium text messages to be sent from your device without your knowledge?
Yes, I have a bias towards security. We have Facebook and Twitter, which are used as breeding grounds for all sorts of mayhem...Obviously all they have done is displayed all our private information to the whole world. That is really going to be regretted by everyone using those services...Sooner or later. We have the multimedia Androids which ignore fundamental issues and have grown too large to comfortably use. HAVE YOU NEVER HAD TO REALLY STRETCH YOUR FINGER TO REACH AN ICON, OR USE ANOTHER HAND?
Regarding tablets, are we really suggesting that they can beat laptops at anything important? If the general stream is towards mass procrastination, tablets have helped us achieve that. But I do not see the next 10 years seeing tablets replacing laptops.
Well, i still think the future of the laptop and notebook is the tablet
And blackberrys are not as safe as you think they are

I see Android the same way I do Linux. It will attract the true techies but but for the average user it will not appeal to theme as it takes to much work to get it just right and most people are just to lazy
IMHO is the main difference between android and iOS, that android is more customizable and, with that, its more complicated. So, most people who only want to have a working phone which is looking good and don't want to learn anything bout software will buy an iPhone. Because its simpler.
I think android will be catshing up with apple, because it's only getting better, it is open source, the phones is cheaper and more options to change the apperence of the phone!
Why, isn't it the number one OS yet?

You can't entirely confuse profits with marketshare (which Android has 51% of, I think they were saying). Apple is able to get away with a higher price markup for lesser specs because
0) low price elasticity - iSheep will continue to buy and to rationalize their mother company no matter what
1) they're facing no competition from other, similar iPhone makers, unlike android makers who compete with each other in both specs and price
2) they slice down anything that even vaguely resembles competition with lawsuits (even where they're clearly not making iPhones)
3) the brand itself has become so hyped that it's able to continue to get new users - I guess you could count this as marketing
They still have a much greater stranglehold on the pad market, so a lot of the profits probably come from that.
Finally, if you believe this post at least, Apple is able to squeeze more profits from the way our carriers and subsidies work. Nowadays, it's standard for the carrier to bundle phones along with their services, in a dual-pay system (the carrier "subsidizes" part of the phone cost in exchange for a contract). Because of Apple's particular market power (users might switch to another carrier if the other has iPhone and they don't), they are able to demand that carriers subsidize more while taking away the profits. That way, they make more money without directly charging the buyers. Indirectly, of course, the carriers probably pay for this through increased fees in general, which means that everyone ends up sponsoring the iPhone.
In other words, they've successfully managed to implement an "iPhone tax". Isn't bundling the greatest thing ever?
As for how to make Android better, updates and better phone compatibility is definitely an issue. ICS, for example, needed to be available quickly for multiple devices as soon as it's released. There really is no way to do this, except.. release it earlier. Have a completely open beta, like the Linux kernel, so that everyone can get compatibility working from day -100 onwards. If flashiness (and non-copying by Apple) is an issue, at least give the manufacturers early access to it, so that they're able to start working on device compatibility right away.
Meanwhile, unfettered by bureaucracy, custom roms are churning out faster than any manufacturer ever could. You could have updates and features faster than you ever thought possible; the average user, however, doesn't know enough, or isn't confident enough to go through the installation process. Google should include an easy ROM installer/backup utility by default. That way, the users get a full taste of the speed and power of openness, which really is so intoxicating that they'll never go back to a closed system ever again.
(They could even put start posting up their own custom ROMs! Imagine what their developers could do, unhindered by the megacompany issues. We would have updates, the like of which we've never seen before.)
If Android was optimized to run perfectly on one core just like Windows Phone 7 than I can see a lot of people using it. When I talk to Android users who don't know anything about custom roms/root they complain about force closes and applications not working. Also how there phone slows down.

Yeah, agree with two posts above... The slow spread of Android 4.0 is only good for Apple, the big companies should realize that they're depending on the users liking android, and you will not get them to like Android with refusing to give them updates. Sometimes I think they are not able to look into the nearer future to see what's necessary for them...

great info everyone yes I do notice a bit of a slow down on android 4.0 but I'm on a single core device, hopefully by summer they can find a solution to make android 4.0 more stable and better performance, I feel that the android team is working fast to come up with a software that would bring iPhone users to android, but when iPhone 5 comes out I hope some android phone company's have something up there sleeve that will be able to compete with apple

Right now there on the right path to becoming number one in the market, what i think they need to do to become number one.
all official releases of android to be the same across all phones, things like TouchWiz to be scraped altogether
moderation on the market to stop useless buggy apps from making the market look bad
an android OS for desktops/laptops that will run consumer products
[\LIST]
Better hardware acceleration on all applications.
I think that iPhone as an advantage : there is only one model.
So you can find dock for desktop, car, audio, ...
Android is only the softwar and each constructor have to make is own accessories and so on.
In my opinion, one major problem of Android devices is about fragmentation.. I hope that Android OEMs can release updates for all devices faster.

Yes that's true but there is more money to be made in the android market rather then the iPhone. There are ALOT of brands and generics that make the same accessorizes for the iPhone and each brand is struggling to make money when they all make the same product, unlike android. Verity is better

will demand for android phones fall in the future?

whats the future for android phones? it looks like the market is saturated with technology where demand for android phones may fall. what do you think?
With android being best selling phone operating system I think as long as people need mobiles it will still be popular because it can even be used on low end devices and this means as parts of the world where mobiles aren't popular yet (due to low incomes or lack of cell infrastructure) get mobile phones its likely to be cheap android ones they look to rather than say iphones or wp7.
So I think android sales will continue to increase for the forseeable future.

The ecosystem is the biggest thing for sustainability. I don't think Android/Google are going anywhere and there is room for more than one player other than Apple. Ice Cream Sandwich is also a significant step as allows a consistent os for phone and tablet which really opens up the market for developers.
It may level off a bit because a lot of the initial burst in sales was due to the fact that it was a new OS, meaning that users were previously using another OS. Then there is also a large group of people who were using basic/non-smartphones and then made the move to Android. So the new customer base may not continue to rise as much, but hopefully the existing customer base can stay loyal.
the demand will always be there. with ios innovation stagnating and some people not willing to pay the apple premium, the android platform offers a cheaper smartphone alternative that does everything an iphone can do but maybe not offer the best performance. of course once ICS rolls out everywhere this may be a different story performance wise but android will prevail and i think google is gonna make sure of that.

what you said seems sound.. lets see what the future holds.
ANDROID is still on the long run.. for at least two years, it will grow. I cant predict beyond that. I just know it will grow by seeing people opt to go for Android instead of blackberry and Symbian.
It has been a big talk here in Malaysia. And blackberry peeps are moving to Android as they hate Apple for some reason. I guess they were pissed that iFags bashed them when they r using BBs. Lol

Android catching up Apple.

Today, I had a person say to me that Android will always be playing catch up with Apple. I laughed extremely hard. He then went on to ask me to 'Tell me one thing Google have done that hasn't been done by apple first?' Then I wondered if I could get a thread started stating all the things that Android can do that iOS can't

Yup sadly your friend is right. Google just enhance it and made it open source so all of as can modify our phones to the highest level of customization and tweaks. Apple keep their codes within themselves marketing strategy that's what i call that...
Android have multiple launchers to choose, various screen sizes of android devices... superior hardware exmpl. Tegra 3

I really wonder how many custom ROMs they have with drop down toggles ;')

wow. ummm widgets. notification bar. screen sizes. customization.
Native turn by turn navigation (Apple will add it with iOS 6 for a few selected models)
Widgets
Ability to switch keyboards without SU
Ability to play Flash content in your smartphone
Sideload apps without SU
Deep Social Network integration with the OS (iOS just has Twitter and soon FB integration)
etc.
I could name a few more Android advantages over iOS but at the end of the day what matters is what suits your needs. Despite my love for Android OS and have been using it since the HTC Magic times i can say that my iPad in terms of productivity is way better then a Android tablet, but the same can't be said about iPhone vs my Nexus. My 2 cents.
Nfc, android beam,Cwm, wi-fi direct, Google now........
Just explain to him where Apple got the inspiration for their unique and revolutionary expanded status bar.

First? Who cares? My OS can beat up your OS? Tell that person to please grow up. It's a mobile phone, not Jesus Christ.

Android does what I want it to do. iOS does not.
Strange how some people feel threatened when other people make different choices in life. I have an Android phone. I have no problems with other people having iOS phones. I see it as a boon, actually; when they have problems, I can shrug my shoulders and say, "Sorry, can't help you, I know nothing about iOS".

I always liked how android has all the apps hidden to the point where i don't have to have every app on my screen at once. That to me is really annoying and takes away from the beauty of the phone. Not to mention the ugly badges that the iphone has for notifications.

I applaud you, good sir. I see/hear too many individuals getting up in arms because someone else likes a different mobile OS. To each, his (or her) own!
How exactly is this about the Nexus S?

I was hanging out with my friend (blind ***cough***cough*** hardcore apple ban) on google+ and got into discussion of apple vs android. His exact statement was "Its not about product, price, quality, features or something... Its all about when you are associated to something". Since then I am considering such people totally blind moron and itrolls I don't give a damn what their phone can do I just know my 2 yr old nexus can do much more than their six month old iph4s
Only ppl playing catch up to apple are the manufacturers. Android as an OS has a 54% market share. That 54% is split amongst HTC, Samsung, Motorola etc. While the iOS has a 34% share in the market but that whole 34% is represented by apple.
Manufacturers are behind when it comes to implementation of the OS and the hardware. While Google is ahead with features of their OS compared to iOS.
I think that's what ppl mean when they say Android is playing catch up because other than a few Android phones, none have gotten the recognition of the iPhone. To the majority of consumers, most android phones are "just another phone" ... its sumn I notice everyday when talking to my friends. They don't care about amoled or dual core vs quad core or which gpu is used or what version of android its running. To them its just Android vs iPhone.
Yesterday a friend of mine upgraded from an HTC incredible to a galaxy s3 and she hates it. Yes, she hates it. I know thats just one individuals opinion, but it goes yo show how ppl don't differentiate android phones. To her the incredible was a better fit and its "still android."
To me, it appears that Google is making more of a push to really put their Nexus brand out there. I hope it works but once they push enough units to where they can bring n enough Play Store revenue from nexus devices alone, I can see them making android closed source to create an exclusive ecosystem like apple has. Especially because they have an in house manufacturer in Motorola.
They're already slyly undercutting other Android phone manufacturers by playing to the appeal of having stock Android on the nexus devices and quicker updates.
That'll be bad news for companies enjoying so much success off of Android popularity, but I'm sure they already see this coming if I can.
Right now, Google is letting them stick around because of play store revenue from all the devices.
On another note, if Google is satisfied with the revenue they're bringing n, then I'm wrong, but it looks like they're already going down that path.
Until they do so, Android won't have a "true" iPhone competitor in the eyes of the consumer. Regardless of how many great phones come up a because the stigma of it being just another Android phone.
Just look at eBay. Great Android phones are selling for the same amount as iPhone 3g.... its ridiculous.
