Motoblur on Droid - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I know there are a lot of "droid" phones out there, but the only one I call a droid is the motorola version. Anyway, I'll get to the point...
Has anyone thought about what it would take to bring motoblur to the droid? It looks interesting, but I'm not buying a new phone just to check it out. Considering what has already happened with the droid (custom roms, rooting) I don't think its impossible.
What do you guys think about the idea? Cool? Dumb? Interesting? Waste of time??

i know a group is already working on it over at zeusdroid they are the ones working on the desire port to the droid.

Big question, which one?

So what's a better buy, since I am confused and conflicted as to what to get.
Motorola Milestone or Nexus One/Desire?
I actually have no clue, its confusing to think which one and every time I think I decide I go back to the middle.
And I know that for the Nexus One, this website has one strong modding front behind it, but I have no idea where, if any, modding movement exists for the Droid, since I haven't found anything on this forum.
What are your thoughts on it?

I personally have the N1 and also have T-mobiles "droids" aka cliqs... Htc is far better when it comes to hardware. I suggest the N1!
In my experience - if I want to get google/android updates ASAP I would only go with whatever google choses to sleep with (stock i.e. without any skin)
For GSM that would be the Nexus One.

Aha no Droid love? Is there a site dedicated to Droid mods like this has a section for Nexus development as well?

nope, moto is lacking in the game... plus nexus isnt a branded phone... its a HTC/GOOGLE not a T-mobile/AT&T/Sprint/V-word phone that should be enough to go by in your choice...
I'm also kind of in a boat like this one. I have a G1 and desperately want to upgrade. I'm considering the EVO since Austin has a 4G tower here. The prices and plans are attractive too. The one thing holding me back however is the hotspot feature in froyo. Sprint will almost certainly cut this feature out of the froyo update for the EVO since they want to charge 30 bucks a month to use that. I'm wondering if there will be a version of froyo from cyanogen (or the many other developers out there) for the evo to circumvent this (not to mention to get rid of the Sense UI).
This isn't any easier a decision to make now aha.
I vote for Motorola milestone
considering its hardware keyboard
I have a Milestone and the hardware keyboard is useful, but I don't like the way Motorola have locked down the bootloader.
That means that even when rooted, we are limited in what can be hacked about!
I will be getting rid of the Milestone and getting a Desire soon if that tells you anything.

I see what you mean, well I've put in a few offers to some used N1s, my local shop stopped carrying them!!!
If you do not have any need for a hardware keyboard N1 will be better beause of the faster CPU.
If you like hardware keyboards like me you will forget about N1.
There are quite a few forums with support for the Droid/ Milestone.
Depends on the kind of work you want to do. If all you want is a shiny super modded device with great screen contrast (excluding touchscreen response) and speed and early updates, get Nexus One.
If you need to do a lot of typing and/or need better screen response, get Milestone.
While milestone doesn't have a dedicated community behind it, doing lots of rom porting, most of the useful N1 mods work on it. Also, it is a very solid and well built phone. The build quality compared to nexus one is equally good, if not better. You can also get it overclocked to about 1.2GHz which makes it run superfast, if you are worried about speed.

[Q] Anybody thinking about adding the Motorola Cliq XT 501?

They recently rooted the phone today. XDA do you think y'all can add it to your data base? It has been reported that they finally rooted it. Now it needs more help for roms and themes and I think xda would be a great help in its process. Please respond.

Considering what happened with the Droid X and its encrypted/boobytrapped bootloader, i think that a development scene for motorola phones is just not worth it.
not worth it?
if a total newb like me can root, install a custom recovery, flash a new rom, and customize my phone to the max, i think the droid problems are not present in this phone. i am trying myself to learn to dev with android, but until i do, i would love to see a 2.1 (or maybe even 2.2 ) rom for this phone. just because you aren't interested (or able) to develop for this phone, don't mean others won't. i love this site, and i have learned alot from the resources here, but it seems to me they are snubbing one of my current phones. every customization on my HD2 has come from (or i learned to do myself on) this site. even way back to my tmo wing i was learning stuff from this site. but if people feel my phone isnt good enough for this site, well, modmymobile is workin their collective rear ends off tryin to dev for this phone. i know i'm not the most active poster on this site, but thats because newbs are like children, seen and not heard, to some folks on here. well, this isn't the only dev site on the web, as sorry as i would be not to be able to use my first dev site.
Yeah I was thinking the same. Tmobile offered me 3 phones to choose from sence they stop restocking the g1. Moto cliq, moto cliq xt, nokia nuron. That's not a really fair chance from the phone selection which the nokia sucks and the other phones are basicly the same. One has a hard keyboard and the other has a soft keyboard. Plus from what I heard you can't install apps like you can on the g1 because of the security measures. Modmyphone gave a lot of information, if the moto cliq xt picks up further I might end up getting it or wait for my 2 yr contract to finish and get full discount.

Seriously I would love to c a cliq xt section, Im really disappointed that modmymoto only have like 3 devs working on XT, i spent way too much time here back when i had my g1. There r way too many good devs here who could do wonders w cliq xt.
After all, if cliq xt doesn't pick up on here after a while, section can just b taken down but don't deny cliq's abilities, i would kill to c a Hero sense or froyo tuning on it. I'd assume a good challenge would just attract more devs to work on xt.

[Q] No 2.2 G1 Toned Down MotoBlur Rom?

I was considering posting this in the Q/A thread, but its not really a question about how installing roms work.
I was wondering if there were any 2.2 Blur roms, like the motoblur on the droid 2 and droid x? It's an updated, froyo toned down nicer looking blur. Are there any G1 roms like that? Can't find one... thanks in advance! I currently have Froyo For Trout, best rom ever, but I wanted a taste of blur for awhile. Any help?
MotoBlur is like the plague for most 99% of the people here.
That's just how it is.
I know, I hate MotoBlur too but the MotoBlur on the Droid X and Droid 2 seems nice, I want to try it out. It's very scaled down and streamlined.
Oh, and is the Motoblur on droid x and droid 2 a specifically made motoblur for those phones, or just a stock 2.2 motoblur?

The last motoblur rom was the one by jester. That was back in the 1.5 days.
The g1 is just too far behind hardware wise to pull of motoblur.

Are you sure? I'm sure I've seen 2.1 roms
Oh God no.... why would you want MotoBarf :S
The "motoblur" on the droid x and droid 2 isn't really that disgusting ugly motoblur...its a lot different and I wanna try it out. I hate motoblur as much as the next guy, but this is pretty slick and nice

Blur looks nice but that doesn't mean it functions ok
The G1 can't handle 2.2 blur, plus the droid(s) have much higher res+"very" different hardware that would make the roms harder to port than a rom from a htc based phone.
I'm the owner of the first phone to come with MotoBlur, the Motorola Cliq. Because of Motoblur, we got repeated delays for an update to 2.1, causes many phones to overheat, and made this phone very slow. Wouldn't recommend it on G1.
Also to point out: I've rooted and updated roms for 3 different friends who all had motoblur phones (Cliq, Backflip, and Cliq XT [yes, I know it's a different type of motoblur]) all their phones where going very slow and battery life was a drain (I made a punny lol)
Many of the roms on their development forums (I had to go to modmymobile.com cause those freaks of nature aren't supported here on XDA) where just attempts to get rid of motoblur, and guess what: battery life improves to around 2-3x, their phones where no long going so slow.
BUT: I'm sure somebody can make a mock theme to make it look it.

[Q] Boycott HTC ?

Im just wondering if anybody else is dissapointed in the way HTC has locked down the Thunderbolt ans Inc S. I have sent an email to them I suggest eveybody does the same. Whats the deal, they start selling products now and want to move away from what made them so popular. I dont get it

You're not disappointed in the way they've tried to lock down other devices in the past? The HTC Legend is a prime example. The devices HTC created were never meant to be rooted and/or modified in the first place; hackers and devs just happen to be skilled enough to do so.
It's just like Microsoft saying "That our phone is uncrackable" and they get word a person that hacked it within a couple days of getting the phone. No product is released with the ability to do everything, that is why skilled hackers / programmers create the rooting / jail breaking software.
Well don't the Motorola Droid line and the Atrix have encrypted bootloaders? AFAIK no one have yet been able to load custom kernels on those phones. Anyway I don't think HTC have gone that far yet(until now??). If that's the case the 2x will be my next phone, especially now that Paul O'Brien seems to be making excellent progress with it.

Opinions, please! Droid vs Droid 2

Until a couple days ago, I had a rooted O.G. Droid running Cyanogenmod 7 and I LOVED it. But it fell into a bowl of water, so that's that.
Now I have the option to either use insurance to replace the Droid with a refurbished (*ugh*) Droid for about $100, or use my upgrade and get a Droid 2 for $150 (Droid 2 being, for some reason, the only phone currently available from Verizon with a physical keyboard).
My problem is, my wife has a Droid 2 and I hate, hate, oh my god I HATE Blur. I personally think it basically breaks Android with its lousy design.
Now, this could be fixed with a custom ROM (maybe even just a new launcher?), but I have been researching and I can't tell what the deal is with Droid 2 Roms. I'm gathering there is a locked bootloader, but roms are available. I'm not clear what that means, exactly. Like, in what way does a locked bootloader affect the ability to flash roms, etc.
I'm having a hard time making a decision, here. I'm not thrilled about a Droid 2, but it's only $50 more than a refurbished Droid. That said, maybe I should spend $100 on a refurbished Droid now and save my upgrade for a phone I actually want? But if Blur can be removed from the D2 fairly easily, maybe it's fine.
Please, anyone with Droid/Droid 2 experience, share your opinions. Thanks all!
Really? No one wants to help me out here? I didn't think it was a dumb question, but alright. I suppose I'll go for the D2 and hope for the best.
Go for the D2, not a bad phone keyboard is waaayyyyy better. I'm sure you could root and customize it too your liking. I would go for touch only but if you prefer the keyboard might as well go faster.
I owned a D2 but ended up getting an incredible because of the bootloader issue. I also detest blur and flashed roms/themes to hide it basically. As far as smartphone functionality, its a fine phone but I wanted to be able to totally customize my phone (radios, kernels, roms, etc). There is a small amount of development but its just really up to you as far as how much control you want to have over your phone. Definitely no cyanogen on the D2

Thanks for the replies, guys! I think I'm going to go with the D2 and do my best to nullify Blur, per k_nivesout suggestion, until another upgrade comes my way.
I like customizing and installing Roms, kernels and whatnot, but I suppose as long as I can tone Blur down, I'll be happy enough with the D2 for a year or so. Really, I just wish VZW would release a vanilla Android phone already. Annoying!
Thanks again for sharing your opinions. The fact Verizon customers like myself need even to contemplate passing up an upgrade just to avoid Blur should make VZW think twice about the value of Blur.
I had the org droid as well and it was an ok phone but as far as the d2 being the only phone with a physical keyboard that is untrue. The droid pro has a physical keyboard that kicks butt it is far and away better that the d2 imo the screen is smaller and not great however and there is no cm7 either but i threw launcher pro on it to hide blur mostly and I really like the phone for the most part. You should be able to get it for $50 CPO thats what I did and im not sorry. I think it is a great phone for some people. BUT there is zero xda support for this phone you can root it tho you will still be on froyo (coming from cm7 meh its fine). anyhow I like this phone and would love to hear that its doesnt die completly obscure. DO NOT get the d2
driod 2 all the way bro!
I had to make a decision tonight, so I went with the D2. I think if I root and replace the launcher, it will resolve most of my major issues. Though I'm going to miss Gingerbread on the O.G.
Yamjoker, you're right I forgot about the pro. I checked it out, but I guess I dismissed it due to the small screen. I have to say the keyboard is delicious on the Pro but yeah, I prefer a larger screen.
Thanks for sharing, everyone.
You can still do some fun stuff with the d2, I would recommend liberty rom, its really quite good for not being a "custom" rom. I also ran the gingerbread leaks for a little bit and its not too bad if you use a different launcher (I liked ADW w/ minimalist theme). Unfortunately the d2 section here is pretty dead, definitely check out www.droidforums.com for the latest. Good luck!

Just wanted to post a quick update. The Droid 2 with Liberty 2.0.1 suits me just fine. Even stepping back from Gingerbread, I'm quite happy. I can see now where the locked bootstrap is more restrictive, but I've found the trade off of customization vs sheer power over my Droid 1 is a fair one for now.
Btw @ k_nivesout, I think you meant to point me to droidforums.net (rather than .com). It's a great resource so thanks for that.
That's right, its .net! Sorry, I was typing from my phone and spaced that out. Glad liberty on the d2 is working well for you, don't get me wrong, I love CM7 on my incredible but I was pretty pleased (visually at least) with my previous liberty 1.5/adw ex setup.
