Change HTC Exchange Integration Device Type - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

Anyone know where the Device Type is kept for HTC's Exchange stuff?
Currently it sends my device over to the Active Exchange network as "HTCHero" I'd prefer if it did not do this. I'd like it to present itself as a more secure device like... 'iPhone'
Right now I'm using TouchDown Pro and it will do this for me... and for the most part I like touchdown except that it's horribly ugly. I'd like the ability to use the phone's exchange integration again if I felt like going back.

Not sure if your Hero is rooted yet, but if it is, someone could probably baksmali/smali the .apk and change the activesync device string it returns.

I can't get mine to even link up with my gmail account.
You know what you are suppose to put when it asks you for the domain and server info?

With out starting a new thread here, and on the topic of exchage. Does anyone know how to remove an email from the device and not the server?? My blackberry gave me the option. Maybe a "Download a Copy" setting?
I have this posted in 3 other forums and no one is responding.

Maybe this thread could be about all Exchange issues / tips ?
Would be cool.
I don't have answers to the OP here just some points:
1. I read either on here or another forum that your customized folders in Exchange did not show up on Captivate. Can anyone deny / confirm?
2. I don't see why contact GAL lookup won't work, it worked on my Aria. But then again also my Exchange customized folders showed up just fine on Aria.
3. Dialing from Calendar entry on Captivate no worky? Really? Sounds unlikely but can anyone confirm / deny?
You are able to do lookups within the email client on the gal. Simply press the search button, this will take you to a lookup field.
My folders all synced with my exchange account. Its more like a fake sync.it pulls when selected.
I have not been able to lookup phonenumbers through the gal.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The default email client leaves a lot to be desired when dealing with Exchange support. Yes, you can have customized folder but navigate them isn't that easy. For example, I have more than a dozen folders under my inbox folder, they all showed up as tabs along side the Inbox. There is no way to configure which folder to sync and which doesn't.
The calendar also showed my meetings wrong. I have a few repeating events with a few exceptions, e.g. I delete a few meetings in certain weeks. After sync, the calendar on my phone ignores all those exceptions/deleted meetings.
I'm going to investigate other Exchange support apps. The stock app really stinks.

Customized folders do show up, along the top bar of the main email client window. Swipe or tap to change folders.
2. I don't see why contact GAL lookup won't work, it worked on my Aria. But then again also my Exchange customized folders showed up just fine on Aria.
Compose or reply to an email. Below the TO and CC fields are four buttons. One is SEARCH. That does a GAL lookup.
3. Dialing from Calendar entry on Captivate no worky? Really? Sounds unlikely but can anyone confirm / deny?
Works just fine for me.

Some other tips.
Make messages easier to read and MUCH easier on the battery by going to Menu/Display Mode and picking "Positive Mode". Wish Gmail would do this too, white background is not AMOLED friendly at all (uses MORE power than an LCD would use).
Check your signature...you may or may not want to advertise you're "using an i897 on AT&T 3G Network". Account Settings/Signature.
Check message size, it's probably set too low by default, unless you're really trying to conserve a few kb of data. Advanced Settings/Email Size.
What format are your telephone numbers in your calendar?
888 123-4567
8881234567
Don't work for me. They are in the body of the calendar entry.

I have not been able to lookup people by phone number (useful when you get a call from your office that you don't recognize the number) since I got rid of the first gen blackberry I had many years ago.
And that's including a year that I had the tilt (A Windows phone you'd think they could make their own stuff work together.) And I still can't with the Aria I have now (until next week Wed. when my Captivate arrives, and then I won't be able to with my Captivate. )
Sad that Exchange integration was better with the blackberry 6 years ago than it is with today's latest Android devices.
sadly the gal search only provides me the email address, not the phone number or any other gal information. Or does it for you? Am I doing it wrong?
It must be that somebody at Android and or Samsung owns stock in Touchdown / Nitro ???
It's probably due to the limitation of Exchange ActiveSync protocol.
P.S. dialing from calendar doesn't work for me either when the phone number is in event body.

The GAL lookup fubar is not the EAS protocol. It works on other platforms just fine. I think it is a Samsung issue - i will test later on my Moto phone and see what they return in a GAL lookup.
As for calendar dialing - I want to see some proof of someone doing this with an Exchange entry. I have tried new entries in Exchange and Google with a phone number in body and location - nothing works. URLs don't work either.
The entire calendar entry is treated as an unelectable blob.

I don't remember if it works in WM or not (never tried even though I've been using WM exclusively in the past). But according to posts above by bwolmarans, it didn't work for his Tilt either. Remember BlackBerry doesn't use EAS at all. You need to setup BES server in order to communicate between Exchanger server and BB.

It works fine on iPhone - they licensed EAS, and I am pretty sure it worked on my WinMo phone. I have another Android 2.1 phone I want to try it on.
As further information, I could not get my GAL to work in the stock email client. After reading another forum thread, I installed "Swift Contacts" from the market. This unlocked the GAL functionality in the stock client as well.

[Q] Windows Live account problem

My Focus acts weird when I add the first windows live account.
When I plug in my live account, then
"[email protected]" is added as a live account
(with a random password.)
So the access to market apps is completely blocked
and since the first live account is not deletable I have to hard reset each time.
Is there anyone having same problem? What would be solution?
Thanks in adv.

"[email protected]" is the sample email you see in the field where you are to enter your own email address that is associated with your main Windows Live account. The password field should be blank, though - no characters at all.
Are you saying that you can setup your Live account fine, and then another account appears afterward that you haven't set up?

Yes, I setup my Live account at settings, and random account appears.
Here are some screenshots.

Like this, "[email protected]" is actually added as the primary Windows Live account. On Marketplace the account is also "[email protected]" and I can't change it.
(I know this address should be an example.... but here it is weird.)
By the way, I think I posted this on Focus forum, but I don't know why it ended being in WP7 forum. Although it doesn't matter.
Strange

Very strange, indeed. What did Tech Support say?
anything on this?
Having the same problem on a ATT HD7S.
Got my HD7S from ATT yesterday. Still can't get it to set up correctly. No tutorials for the HD7 (or HD7S) on the ATT web site like the box indicates either.
When ever I try to add a Windows Live account (a primary account using an existing Windows Live ID that is not associated with any other device and not modifying the stupid default ATT demo account) it fails. Yes, all spelling and password is correct. The account address then reads "something[at]example[dot]com" and "Attention required" and the account can not be modified or deleted (I assume this is because it is supposed to be the primary phone account?). ATT support is horrible and was absolutely no help.
Stupid thing also keeps showing a Meet Windows Phone kind of screen saver whenever the phone goes idle. I am hoping this goes away once the primary Windoes Live account is set up.
Searching XDA forums for "something[at]example[dot]com" and "Attention required" was also of no help. What should I be searching for?
Really ATT/Microsoft? Right out of the box this thing is a pain.
Any help?

It sounds like they sold you a phone intended to be a display model for the store. I'd guess that the Live account setup is actually disabled because of this.
Solved!?

Yeah, same conclusion I came to after some surfing... (damnit can't post links yet because of my noob status)
(http - answers.microsoft.com/en-us/winphone/forum/wp7-sync/windows-live-account-sync-issues/6a6315a9-0455-4fbe-badf-1c8cc38b69a0)
Here is some more info on what the phone was doing in case someone else encounters this:
Somehow the phone was in "dog food" mode which is some kind of internal MS testing or demo mode. I never saw any kind of getting started wizard when turning on the phone, even after a hard reset (Power On while holding Vol Up/Down) which is what new users are supposed to see.
Instead, after the phone would boot, trying to do anything would result in a "Loading..." screen. After a few miniutes, the phone would automaticallyreboot and have all the ATT software loaded along with a dummy "Me" account ([email protected] or something like that) with fake contacts, messages and email like some kind of demo mode.
Trying to add a new Windows Live account would result in "[email protected]" with "Attention required" below the entry in the account list. Clicking on the corrupted entry would not allow you to change the "[email protected]" address, but you could reenter the password. Entering a password resulted in a Captcha (sp?) verification and password reentry. This always failed though.
Took it back got a new one and I would not let the service people touch it this time (they set it up for me last time). This time, I cracked the seal on the box myself, got the [getting started] wizard option right after boot and everything worked fine right out of the box like it is suppoed to happen.
So... either the phone was fubared, the saleperson messed up the setup (how in the world?) or they gave me a demo model? Like MPerz said, my bet is on the last option. @&#! A whole day wasted.
I hope this helps the next poor bastard this happens to.
FYI, the online ATT tutorial for the HD7S is actually at (http - att.deviceanywhere.com/htchd7s/tutorials). It wasn't accessable through the normal support menus this morning, only via that direct link.
Funny part is... I went to a store instead of ordering it online so I could avoid any problems... Oh the pain!
I would recommend finding a way to submit a complaint to Microsoft regarding this. AT&T's treatment of this platform has been shameful; from being relegated to a back corner ghetto in each store to the snail's pace update roll-outs and now it would seem that their sales reps can't even set the devices up properly. It's especially frustrating in light of CEO De La Vega's comments that if Microsoft wants to sell more units, "I think they just need to make it better." (I can't post links yet, so search for the quote to see it in context.)

[Q] Is There An App For Pushing Global Contacts OTA?

Hello All,
I am relatively new to the Android Scene but I have been messing with my Epic, rooting it, running custom ROMs, and absolutely loving it! So I have decided that I want to move our entire company over to Android phones from WM6 phones.
One thing that I am looking for that I was never able to find for our WM devices was a way to pull a Company Phone Book out to our phones Automatically OTA.
We have about 140 lines on our cell phone pool currently, and when we have a new person start, we send out an email telling everyone that a new person has started and to add their number to their contact list manually. Most people just ignore the email and never do it, so they never actually get the new contact on their phone. So I am looking for a way to automate the process for our people.
We currently have a Public Folder on our Exchange Server that is called "Company Cell Phone List" that holds the contacts for all of our phones with the Employee Name/Number/Picture.
When a new employee starts, I create a new account on the Exchange Server, and log into that users account in Outlook, and Copy/Paste the contacts from the Public folder to their "Contacts" folder and sync the phones OTA with the Exchange Server and move the contacts that way initally.
I know with BlackBerry you can push address lists to the phones through a BES. With WM I never could find a solution, and with Android I am hoping there might be something that I can use to accomplish this.
Is there an App out there that can actually sync this information to the phones automatically instead of having the end users add the contacts manually, or me having to log into 140 outlook accounts and add a new number to their "Contacts" folder each time someone new starts?
Any help would be greatly apperciated. And thanks for letting me be long winded ;-)
HTC seams to support this with their sense cusomized mail app
Is there somewhere that you saw that posted? I am looking at going to Droid 2 Phones wth Verizon so trying to find something that will work on that Froyo platform.
Sent from my Epic 4G using XDA App
you should be able to set up a company google account for this. have all the work phones sync to the contacts backed up on google's server and it'll pull them automatically as changes are made. you can also edit the contact list manually on their site somewhere. not the most secure / professional but it's the simplest method I know of.
Yeah I thought of that method too. At that point I could just set up a common Exchange account and have all of the phones pull from that account and we would have a little more control over it.
I just don't want people sending E-Mail's out of any account other than their specified Exchange Mailbox. So putting a second E-Mail account that has anything with our Company Name associated with it is kind of risky being that there is not much accountability if someone is to send out a non work appropriate E-Mail.
Just too risky to me.
So if there is something Server Side we can do I would do it, else if there actually was an App that could tunnel down to those public shares OTA would be the best.
But again, a common account is a good idea in theory, just worried that someone would send something from the account and cause me all kinds of headaches

[Q] Did VZW cripple stock MAIL app?

To sync with my company's ActiveSync server, I HAVE to check both "Use Secure Connection" and "Accept All SSL Certificates."
However, the latter choice is not appearing in my MAIL setup screen, ONLY the Use Secure Connection checkbox. As such I'm not given access to my work's mail server. I've seen it on almost every Android device... why would it be missing on TBolt?
Sorry... can an admin. please move this to the APPS topic?
Thanks!
I had that same issue and thought it was just me. I'm using Touchdown for now but would love to use the stock exchange one

Good idea... motivation for me rooting this bad boy.
I think I have only ever seen the "Use Secure Connection" and "Accept All SSL Certificates" options on the stock Android email app. The sense one only has the single checkbox.

No VZW had nothing to do with the mail app...
I am a bit confused by this. My exchange server shouldn't work with Android AT ALL... however due to HTC's ... how shall we say... engineering it works perfectly.
Wonder why you have to select all certificates...

Mine show up as HTML... not sure what is wrong on yours. Both GMail and Exchange are showing up fine.
I guess I just haven't found what I need to change in the setting yet then. I can be slow and special at times.
Ok, after more investigation, I have have realized that my exchange email is on plain text only, but... the option to change it is grayed out and unclickable. What am I doing wrong? I can't change the option from plain text, and I really don't like it.
It is crippled or at least modified
I'm pretty sure MAIL is crippled or at least modified. If you use MAIL to setup IMAP accounts, it will not let you specify an IMAP path prefix, which is a royal pain for me, since I can't view my sent emails without that IMAP path. That was one of the main reasons I jumped from WinMo to Android! Looks like I'll be rooting sooner than I thought (I've loved the Tbolt as-is until now)
On yours, does it have the option where it is suppose to allow you to check between html and plain text, grayed out? My personal email is fine, it's just the exchange email that is giving me fits. I can change the normal account. Oh, and html worked fine on my D2 with exchange.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Set up fine here, both before and after root with the stock mail app that came with the phone. I do have the choice of HTML or Plain Text and neither is grayed out. I have only one choice for security and it says "This server requires an encrypted SSL connection" which is checked. My admin also pushes a security policy requiring a PIN or password after a 15 minute time out.
To get rid of the exchange security, and get both SSL check boxes, I installed this app.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775007
It doesn't work with the HTC message widget, but at least it gets you corporate email.
Have you tried telling it proceed? I had the same qualm, and I hit next and it prompted me to accept the certificate even though it was invalid.
Yeah, I have set up the account, and it works fine other than the fact that I can't get HTML emails in anything other than plain text. I go emailapp>menu>more>settings>send/receive>recieve settings and under receive settings the message format is grayed out and unselectable. I know it's not the server, because I had it setup fine on the D2. I have also tried deleting the account and starting over from the beginning, and it still does this. So I don't know what to do to fix it.
Any update on the HTML email issue? I'm rooted, so I can swap the native app with any other other Sense friendly app. It works well in Touchdown, but I prefer to use the native mail app -- it's much cleaner and well integrated. I just REALLY need to see HTML and graphics in my emails.
It used to be fine with my Droid X, so I know that it's not a server policy. It's just broken in the TBolt's native mail app.
thoughts?
I haven't really had the time to investigate further. I've just let it be for now. Semester will be over in two weeks, then I can look more into it.

End of email turns into chinese?

I'm having a rather odd problem, whenever my friend and I are replying back and forth over email,
the bottom of the email keeps turning into a complete gibberish slab of what seems to be Chinese/Japanese.
The last reply shows fine, but the ones before it are garbled.
I'm running ICS on an asus transformer prime, not rooted and using stock email app.
I have one hotmail account (used to correspond with my friend) and one gmail account on it.
Id gladly supply more info if requested.
Anyone have any clue as to what on earth is going on?
- Sven
Are you using the "stock email app" which means the "Email" app (as opposed to the Gmail app)?
Yessum, the standard email app, not the gmail one.
Ive done some tests to try and replicate the problem, to no avail.
Ive emailed myself from one account to another and replied back and forth about 10 times,
but I can not get it to "chinesify" the older replies lower down the email.
So im not sure exactly where this weird corrupted crud is coming from.
My friend describes it as "there are a buncha blocks at the bottom",
I assume its the same Chinese im seeing except he is missing the font for it.
If theres another good email app (with widget/alerting!) that would solve this,
id gladly give it a spin since in my opinion the standard one isn't all that amazing.
People mention K-9 but that seems to be very phone oriented, not at all for tablets.
