Terminal app? - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

Is there a terminal app that works on the Hero? I tried Better Terminal Emulator and that doesn't work with long presses on the keyboard (2 characters get inserted, not one) and Terminal Emulator doesn't work with virtual keyboards at all.
Thanks.

I'd like to know which terminal app works best myself. I'm able to make best terminal work okay if I cycle through the keyboards to get the special characters I need without a long tap, but it would be nice if the app did support that function.
Also with MoDaCo ROM 1.1 for cdma hero I have problems (force close) if I turn the screen to landscape, but I haven't tried a reinstallation of the app to see if that helps.

I use SU File Manager & Terminal, and the terminal works great, no issues at all

i have terminal emulator and it works fine no problems here

Ditto.....

I just use better terminal. Works fine for my purposes. Ya know, it is kind of a silly idea but since MoDaCo included ssh into the rom you could potentially use ConnectBot to connect through ssh on the phone itself. I don't think it would make much of a difference except maybe be slower but just an idea to throw out there.

I agree, very handy program.

How do you both use terminal emulator when it doesn't support a soft keyboard?

Virtual keyboard under terminal emulator is pulled up by using the "menu" with a long press. Still suffers from double inputs on long press of keyboard keys:
"ls -l" turns into "ls n-l" since the "-" is a long press on the "n" key. I can of course swap over to the numeric keyboard to get the "-" without long press, but it's a pain. (Better than nothing, but still a pain.)
ConnectBot can connect to the "local" system if you use the menu, but it still suffers from the double input on long press.
So, although these apps are usable in a pinch they don't reach the level of what I'm looking for. I'm sure that someone will notice this and develop an app, but it will probably take a while. Then again when Android 2.0 comes to the Hero we might have better luck.

I just tried it and it too suffers from the multiple character on keyboard long press issues.
I want a terminal emulator that works *correctly* with the Hero soft keyboard, long press substitutions and all.

It does require you to cycle through the different keyboards as another user stated, but as the app title states it also includes a VERY useful SU File Manager that precludes many uses I have for the terminal (tap the button to remount /system as rw and click drag click away!).
I have used Better Terminal with long presses on my soft keyboard successfully in the past.

That's weird, Terminal Emulator works just fine with long press substitutions for me. It took me a bit to figure out how to bring the keyboard up on the screen, but I can hold buttons to have it insert symbols with no problems.

Well, right after I typed that I checked my phone to make sure this still worked. I found out it works in portrait mode, but when I turned the phone to landscape mode it stopped working. It also didn't work if I turned the phone back to portrait mode either. However, if I hit the button to hide the keyboard (button at the very bottom left of the keyboard) and long-pressed the menu button to bring it back up, the long-press substitutions worked again.

In need of a special task manager to my PDA..

Okey.
I got a Qtek S100 (or Magican, as you call it...).
I've been searching around för task managers that fits my needs, including this forum. I've tried the most popular, and some other, but haven't got jackpot yet.
All of the task managers I've tested works like this: Hit an icon with the pen (or finger...) and a menu pops up.
I want to press a hardware button, to make the menu open.
A long time ago I had such a program. I had it on both of my iPAQ models. A 3630, and a 3660.
On these models these program was attatched to the right buttons, se picture:

Any idéas of programs?
Is it not possible for you to remap the buttons, I mapped the camera button on my xda 2 to execute tomtom for instance.
dont waste time trying to map the send/cancel button.
there is no way to map.
i have tried all the whole list of Mapping button program from pocketgear.
none able to do it
probably you want to download a program that has 2 functions in each hardware button
for example.
1. calendar (press one)
1. pocket word (press and hold)
2. contacts (press one)
2. pocket excel (press and hold)
so on...
there u go, you can launch 8 applications
The problem is not to execute a program, that I can do well. The problem is TO OPEN A MENU.
For instance, press a hardware button and the start menu opens...
But, I want a task bar, that I can open it's menu by pressing a hardware button.
the start menu is just like a launcher
i have no idea how to map the start menu to a button
anyway, let calculate the step
using finger to press start menu (only 1 move)
using finger to press hardware button (only 1 move)
since no solution, we have to face it

I found "magic button" to be a useful task switcher - but I don't know a way of using it with the hardware buttons. I also use buttonMax - you can create a macro that taps the start menu and assign the macro to a hardware button. I use "program menu" as my start menu which supports hiararchial menus so you can have access to a large amount of apps using a couple of button presses.
http://www.pocketmax.net/buttonMax.htm
I have already tested before this question is asked.
the only thing that cannot be done (that how i feel), is by configuring the 'send' button to map to a program (such as photos contacts 1.0d)
urh.. this photos contacts is not the built in program, it is an external program

Update: Now I've found another one, and I like this one even better.
HandySwitch is the name..

Couldn't assign Windows button using AKU3.3.13.ASERG

After upgrading to AKU3.3.13.ASERG, everything is perfect (fast, responsive, cool) except one thing, windows button assignment.
I can't assign it to other application such as Microsoft Voice command.
I would very much appreciate any help.
Maybe a bit out of topic, is there any way to uninstall Cyberon voice ?
I prefer Microsoft Voice command 1.6.
BTW my PDA is Dopod 818pro G4.
Thanks.

yes
same problem
maybe because of the WIZA200
I have yet to see a ROM post-WM5 aku 2.3 that can change the functions of those bottom 2 keys (Windows and OK button). You would think they could have figured this out by now.
I read before here that since it's based on the Wizard rom and the Wizard doesn't have that two buttons so it doesn't work.
Hmmm...Don't know why I didn't think of that. This should still be made to work, as those 2 buttons were customizable as well on the Wizard. I wonder what the file buttonsext does? I see that it is referred to only once in the registry. Perhaps if we got this file from a Prophet ROM and replace it with the one on these Wizard-based ROMs?
give this tool a try. still beta but i think it run stable.
is simlar to smartkey but . . .

with SetMaxMem you can save the memorystatus after a reboot for the freeram display in top
if you "speedup" a application altab set your neo to 240Mhz if this app is in foreground
else it set it to 180Mhz
this setting is stored in registry ;-)

Woah! This is fantastic! I think this will be the most useful program if it does what I think it can do. So, you can target specific apps to run at faster speeds? Also, what do the line graphs at the very top represent? I have blue, red, and grey.
And, ta-dah, the buttons 1 and 2 issue has been solved. We can now change the function of button 2 to close apps with a real task manager such as WA2.
Thanks for the great work, and the task switcher is very nice with the end call button.
Do have some sort of documentation or read me for this?
no sorry. no readme till now.
the to lines above. . . look here - > http://pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=23466
in the middle its dark @180mhz and green @240mhz
So, is this altab.exe and compilation of smaller tools? Which tool is able to change the function of the buttons so succesfully?
This is the only one I've found to truly intercept the built-in functions before they execute.
the main function are the buttons/alt-tab and overclocking
the powerstatus display and the regtweaks are integrated small tools
/inteks
How do you overclock with this app, or do you need another app to do this?
Also, is it possible that you could make a version stripped of the status bars at the top? Or, at least give an option to not display it? Thanks....

Great job!
This is great! I used powerstatus, alt-tab and smartskey as my favourite tools (simple, very small memory usage). And i defnitely missed the possibility to assign buttons 1 and 2.
And now we have it all together.
I'll test an submit my experiences
Test results
I installed it (shortlink in windows\startup folder) and tested it a couple of days an it worked great (24kb ram, volume-button scrolling works better as in Smartskey). I have found 2 minor things:
1. Closing windows settings menu by doublepresssing the endCall button closes the shell, which results in softreset. Minor problem, ok-button works.
2. Left softbutton function is not catched by all programs. For instance, "Unlock" softbutton does not work. Minor problem, touchscreen does. Same with Total Commander.
Third is that my phone seems to crash more often than before, but I can't tell for sure it's your tool.
I have one question: The file is quite big (1,5 MB). What causes the size? Smartskey, Alt-tab and Powerstatus are very small, so the only thing left to explain te size is te capturing of buttons 1 and 2. If would be wellcome if it could be made smaller. Is that possible?
But even with this size it's great anyway.
Prophet G4
Aserg 3.3.13 rom
Radio 02.61.21
This app has fantastic functionality, but for whatever reason, it burdens my device running WA2. It's especially noticeable with the start menu appearing and other menus. Not too sure what the problem is, given that the app has such a small footprint.
hiho,
@2241Alexanders
jo, my mistake. . . i uploaded the debug version (size) the release version is 150Kb normaly, sorry.
i will upload a "release" version after i fixed the "closed shell" bug
what do you mean with "Unlock softbutton" ??
[edit] if you want the "hard" softkey to work you have to leave the "SoftKey L" in Setting on "<Left SoftKey>" . . .
i dont think that atTab causes the crashes ? no problems here
the programm does nothing until you press a button. (hook)
the powerstatus runs on an diffrent timer with 2sec interval (same as orginal powerstatus)
and every 5 sec the programm checks the foreground window and start omapclock if needed.
@floepie
what is "WA2" ??
btw with "task manager" (included in aserg's rom) you can check CPU usage of each program. alTab use 0.09-0.27% on my device @180MHz. most of this cpu time is used for powerstatus. without powerstatus its @0.00% most of time
(the "old" powerstatus.exe use 1.83-2.29% CPU time)

Wow! Very helpful utility! That's what I've been looking for since my Prophet ROM upgrade, as I really needed those two lost buttons!
Thank you very much, inteks!
But I have some suggestions.
Would it be possible to make the buttons used by the program customizable? Like the EndCall button, which now opens the task switcher - without alTab that button switches to the Today screen, and I'm really missing this feature.
Actually personally I would even disable the task switcher in alTab completely if it had such an option, as I don't really need another task manager - I prefer the way how AltTab.exe works: it shows a window with the icons, sets the focus to the previously used application, and if you just wait a second, it switches to it - very similar to how Alt-Tab key combo works in Windows. I really like that!
If the button, which opens the main alTab window (task manager) will be optional, and could be disabled, I guess the main window should show up just when the application starts. BTW, this will allow to easily assign the task switcher to any other button using the standard system Buttons control panel.
Additional actions, which can be assigned for the held soft buttons, is also a very useful feature! Is it possible to add such "Hold" commands for the hard buttons as well? "Button 4(Hold)" is standard, and assignable, but it would be nice to have the same for buttons 1-3 too.
Thanks!
hiho,
download here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1229851#post1229851
new -> it shows icons for the windows in the list.
and some bug fixes (end shell, filesize . . . )
@alpax
without atTab the "ok" button switch to desktop, too so the red button is useless but for end calls.
thats why i select this as main button for alTab.

Changing the function of a bt handsfree's button ?

How can i (if it's possible) change the function of the buton on my bt handsfree i want to make it start the camera not dial/hangup is that possible ?

That would be useful. Have the phone set up somewhere, and use your headset as a remote to take pictures. Far better than using a timer, and running to be in the photo.
you can change it to run a different app if you want or make a mort script to run what ever you want.

Thanks for this info. I have managed to make it so I can run the camera.exe by pressing the handsfree button. Unfortunately taking a picture is proving slightly more difficult. I thought setting the reg string to run a mortscript saying simply SendCR would press the carriage return upon pressing the handsfree button, and take a photo, but this doesnt seem to work.
Can anyone point out where I'm going wrong, or point out another way of taking the photo. Is it possible to point HKLM\Software\OEM\VoiceCommand\path to button 4 (this is camera button on my hermes) as the function of button 4 changes when in the camera app from 'run set app' to 'take photo'? I dont know if you can set a shortcut to simulate a hardware button

ok first what you need is a mort script that will run camera then change the reg to something else then you press the bt button again and it will take the pic but you need to look on vijay's website, just google vijay555, he has an app where you can emulate any hardware button. hope this helps

This is exactly what I had in mind once I'm sure I can get it to work. After a bit of playing around, I have discovered that you can only set the reg key to run a program, not a shortcut or a mortscript.
I checked out VJKeyPress, but it works by following a command line in a shortcut to select the button it emulates. I need a program which purely operates the shutter, and has no other function.
If I cant solve this in the next few days then I may PM Vijay555 and see if he can help.
Success!!
Turns out the amazing vijay555 has another app which does the job called VJBrisk.
By setting the reg key to run VJBrisk.exe, this automatically launches VJTarget.lnk in the same folder. This is a link to VJKeyPress.exe with the command 13, which is RETURN, and which operates the shutter. I have just taken a photo by pressing the button remotely on my bluetooth headset.
Next step is a mortscript which will automatically change the reg key, turn on bluetooth, and run the camera application. And then change the reg key back and turn bluetooth off when the camera app is closed.
Amazing , now if you can explain Step by step how we can do this will be really amazing can you do that for all of us who are searching for solution ?
Can you do this ?
I haven't had time to look at making a mortscript yet. To simply take photos using the headset, I have used VJBrisk and VJKeyPress, both freeware from vijay555's site. I have also used Resco Explorer to edit the registry and create shortcuts, but you can use freeware alternatives.
Download and install both the VJ apps, and then create a shortcut to VJKeypress. In Resco this can be done by selecting the target and pressing copy, then navigating to the folder it is wanted in, and pressing 'paste shortcut'. Place this shortcut in the VJBrisk folder, and edit its command line to read:
"\Program Files\vijay555\VJKeyPress\VJKeyPress.exe" 13
Rename the shortcut to VJTarget.lnk
Now edit the reg string HKLM\Software\OEM\VoiceCommand\path to point to \Program Files\vijay555\VJBrisk\VJBrisk.exe
Now when connected to your headset, the button operates as the RETURN key, and hence will take a photo when the camera app is active. You may want to check the shutter sound is on, and the review time is set to 'no review'.

I'm afraid I'm no expert here.
What is the contents of 'HKLM\Software\OEM\VoiceCommand'?
I now have a string '(Default)' with no value set, a string 'path' pointing to VJBrisk, and DWORD's of 'LaunchAPEnable', 'VoiceCmdDuration' and 'VoiceCmdEnable' all set to 1.
I hope this helps you, or that someone more knowledgable than me can jump in and give you some advice.

Wich keyboard best for HD2?

I know EZinput, Finger Keyboard. Resco Keyboard......
Wich one works best on the HD2? In portrait and Landscape mode.....
in my opinion the Touch Pal keyboard in both modes. With the less sensitive cab in addition i write igual as with a hardware keyboard - finally.
touch pal all the way

Touchpal is the best.

I'm going to stick with SPB, much easier typing on HD2
I am still waiting for my HD2 but on my Diamond 2, fingerkeyboard seems far more accurate and simpler to use than Touchpal. Having said that, I am quite impressed by the Touchpal keyboard and perhaps a larger screen will make it more friendly to use.
I need to get used to swiping... that may be my main issue....
Anyone here know how you can remap keys? That was something I really like about fingerkeyboard. being able to remap keys so I dont have to go into alternative layouts, hit shift, etc to get the stuff I use 99% of the time... all my smileys, ".com", and even "..." were on that one layout.... seemed much faster IMHO... If I could do that with Touchpal and swipe down to get smileys etc instead of swiping to get a different set of symbols, I would be a happy camper!

maybe you should try SlideIT. You can find it here: http://www.mobiletextinput.com/
IMO its even better than FK
I use Touchpal, and I've written an editor for the user dictionary.
It was developed on a QVGA device, but I've seen that it works quite good on WVGA and then on HD2.
I've released it for free on this forum, also.
Trying to find my challenge code, but can't find it. Because I can't find my settings\personal?

I always use the 'compact qwerty', it works better then the original qwerty so think i.
But, still i think that the original qwerty from the iphone better works.
That qwerty from the iphone has some spaces between the marks.
Is that possible to make here on xda?

Yes iPhone qwerty touch screen keyboard is the best keyboard I ever use. It's very accurate, you can't press two keys at same time like in WM. It's like, when you press on key, the radius of invis button is increasing, so if you touch other buttons around, thny not triggered.
Touch Pal freezing and cannot see how to Activate
I have the Me Card filled in under People, which covers the Owner information requirement but the instructions to get to where to enter the registration code does not work on the HD2. At the moment CooTek are unable to solve this.
I was premature in wanting to register as the programme currently freezes when the phone comes out of standby and I cannot choose any other keyboard until I soft reset the phone.
I have Touch Pal installed in main memory.
Any ideas folks?

[Q] SOLVED App or Mod for Power Button on to Soft Keys?

Guys I was just wondering if there's an App or Modification that can be done to use the Soft Keys like Search Button as an alternate Power Button or maybe just Wake Up/Sleep?
Well as far as I see unlock needs to be on hardware buttons only, but to turn off the screen and lock without using the power button you can use screen off and lock, it gives you a home widget and notification widget option that'll turn off the screen.

I don't think the soft keys could work as they rely on the touchscreen which the screen needs to be on for. Soft keys for power is a bad idea anyway!

look at this video guys I think he manage to use the Search Function as Screen Lock/Sleep and as an alternate Power Button.
I can also do Screen Lock with Screen Off and Lock App, but not the Power Menu.

I want the same thing too. I wonder what did he do to his phone? an app or he mod it himself?
The soft keys are still a part of your touchscreen, pointer mode and opening the phone can tell you that. So of you want to use it to wake your phone, the whole touch screen must be activated....
It IS possible, but not battery friendly and not very easy in use.
Instead, why not use volume keys?

Use this to TURN OFF the screen using the search key. Just follow the instructions.
Screen Off and Lock
Then this to TURN ON the screen using proximity sensor. (might not be battery friendly)
Tap Tap App
Confirmed both are working perfectly..
Screen off and lock is great but to turn phone on it can't be done, was hoping of application that can get the phone to switch on via volume rocker

I managed too.
I had a tip from this post: Push me
The point is to edit the *.kl file.
But first do a nand backup!!!
I edited the following files (don't now if all are needed, but i thought i take the ones who match to me/my language):
saga-keypad.kl
saga-keypad-wwe.kl
saga-keypad-ger.kl
qwerty.kl
The files are placed in folder /system/usr/keylayout/
Copy them to your pc and make a backup somewhere.
Open the file(s) with an editor and change key 217 SEARCH into key 217 POWER in every of the four files (maybe to edit saga-keypad.kl is enough -> try out and report).

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Then copy those files in your computer to c:\
Connect your phone with usb cable to pc and boot into recovery. (Make sure adb is correctly installed!)
Open cmd and type in the following commands (after every line push return on pc/cmd):
adb shell
mount /system
exit
adb push c:\saga-keypad.kl /system/usr/keylayout/saga-keypad.kl
adb push c:\saga-keypad-wwe.kl /system/usr/keylayout/saga-keypad-wwe.kl
adb push c:\saga-keypad-ger.kl /system/usr/keylayout/saga-keypad-ger.kl
adb push c:\qwerty.kl /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl
adb shell reboot
After restarting this should be working like in the video.
Good luck!
If this works for you mark the thread as solved and push thanks
