I just rooted the phone (I know this because I installed a screen shot app and it works) and I'm trying to copy a private app that is free off of my phone onto my computer. But, I cannot figure it out. Could someone please give me step-by-step instructions. I would really appreciate this.

He kind of botched the last command instead of:
adb shell flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3.img
it should be:
adb shell
cd /sdcard/
su
flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3.img
Once you make sure this is done, turn of your phone and then hold Home button and press end button. This should load the recovery, choose Nandroid Backup once you are done backing up you will want to flash Modaco's 1.1 rom. More information can be found here:

Once this is done connect your phone to your pc, and open command prompt.
type in:
cd "the directory where the sdk is" \tools
then type:
If you are using appstosd with ext2 and fat32 partitioned sdcard:
adb pull /system/sd/app app
If you are using just fat32, no appstosd:
adb pull /data/app app
this will put all your apps into a directory named app in your \tools folder on your pc.
for private apps just replace app with app-private
alternatively, you can move apps one at a time with the command:
leave out " ".
adb pull /system/sd/app/"appname" "appname"
This will place the file directly into your tools directory. Hope this helps.
Yep, thats what I did. But I didn't flash the recovery rom. If I do that will it erase all my applicastion that I have installed? I didn't want to do that because the app I want to backup was free when I downloaded it but now it's not.
Ok, so I followed all the instructions above and go the in MoDaCo rom flashed. Then, when I tried to pull the apps off the sdcard I get a permissions denied error.

adb is a command that is run outside of the shell
for example your prompt would still be at
c:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb pull /data/app-private (location)
you can't use adb inside of adb shell
Ah, I didn't know adb had to be run outside of the shell.
Now it says there aren't any files in app-private but I know there are two in there.

So I installed widgetlocked from the market and it all runs lovely. However, I wanted to use the Ultralinx mods for it.
I tried a few different ways, extracting it with root explorer. Copying the .apk to my desktop and modding the files there and signing them with signapk, but the modified .apk will not install no matter what I try. It always comes up with 'Application not installed'.
I am a bit newb at this I admit but have installed other apks just fine.
Any help appreciated
Figured it out. HAD to use adb. No other method would I tried would work, but that did first time!
I was trying to PM you, but they weren't going through...
Anyway, is there any chance you could tell me how you did this? I've tried every other method and nothing has happened. Whether it's because I own a Nexus S or a Mac, I don't know, but it's pretty hard (though I am new to this).

As I mentioned the only method I could get to work was using ADB and Ultralinx actually has a youtube video on his site about how to do it, but I will list it here anyway.
Your phone needs to be rooted to do any of this...
Install WL as normal from market.
Copy the file com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker-1.apk from data/app to /sdcard somewhere using astro or rootexplorer etc.
Then move that file to your computer desktop into the /sdk/tools dir where adb.exe is.
Add the WL modded files from Ultralinx to that .apk in the /res/drawable-hdpi/ directory using winrar or whatever program you use to open/mod .apk files. Make sure it has overwritten the original files!
Fire up a command promt and change dir to where adb.exe is sdk/tools or whatever.
type these next couple of lines and enter after each one;
abd shell mount /system
adb push com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker-1.apk /system/app
Then reboot your phone and that should be it done. You can select the new slider from WL options (it modded the iphone slider so select that).
As I say, this is the only way I could get the thing to work.
Coming from windows mobile this whole abd thing of modding stuff seemed a right pain in the arse but I guess like anything once you have done it once you know it for next time and I think this mod is worth it.

Update: So i managed to push it successfully. Problem was I needed to enter the command adb remount beforehand in order for it to let me write.

I always did it on my phone with Terminal Emulator(Temprooted). When I type in ''adb shell'' it gives ''adb: permission denied''. When I try it on my PC(Windows) With only charge and USB debugging on, adb doesn't find my phone.(This is also in fastboot mode)
It gives: ''error: device not found''. What on earth am I doing wrong?
Adb isn't executed on the phone, it's on the pc. The phone should be running normally when you run it (with usb debugging enabled)
Also install htc sync to get the correct drivers
Rehash: start the phone normally. Ensure usb debugging is enabled. Plug the gizmo into your pc. Run adb shell in the command prompt as administrator

Adb is not a valid binary on the phone.
When you issue adb shell you're dropped in to the shell on the phone. Any commands entered there execute on the phone. Type exit to get out of the shell before executing the push commands

I can't backup/write the misc
The following procedure has been tested by me only on ZP950 + 16GB model. Although the procedure is created generally for the MTK6589 processor and it has been already tested on other devices, could / should also work for other devices based on MTK quad-core processor.

The procedure is based on exploits found by motochopper and the necessary files can be downloaded from here
The procedure works on both linux (run.sh) and Windows (run.bat).
Here are the steps to follow:
Download and unzip the package into a folder
Enable USB debugging on your device. Check that using the command adb devices your device is seen.
Open a DOS window (or in case of linux the unix shell) on the new extracted folder

Disconnect the device from the PC, run the run.bat command and press enter.
The program will wait for the device. Then connect your device to the PC
The program will upload the necessary programs, install the exploit and SuperSU.apk and after will launch the exploit to enable root permissions.
When the process is finished, press a button and the program will restart the phone
When the phone is rebooted you will have the root permission and SuperSU application installed.
At first launch of the program will ask you to perform an upgrade to a newer version.
To test whether the procedure for root works, connect the terminal to the PC and type the commands

The SuperSU app will ask you whether to grant root permissions or not, and once accepted, the shell prompt will change from $ to #.

Recovery
The recovery partition is only 6 mb so, some latest recovery don't fit in partition and cant'be installed.
(To be honest, there is a procedure that allow you to increase the recovery partition but you must shift all other partitions and reflash all, but is very dangerous and i am not sure about it).
Here there is an adapted version of CWM (6.0.3.0) that works with the default partion size.
PS: Your device must be rooted, and i am not resposabile of damage to your phone.
The steps are:
Downloa the recovery from here
Conncet the device to pc, open a shell (or dos) where you have downloaded the recovery and run this commands:

adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/cwm-6.0.3.0-zp950.img of=/dev/recovery
This will copy the new recovery on your sdcard,
open a shell on your phone and get the root grants
flash (manually) the new recovery into recovery partition
After the operation ends, you can type

to reboot the phone in recovery mode, on power off it and restart it pressing POWER_ON and VOLUME_UP together.
PS: here there is the default (stock) recovery for who wants to restore it.

The path you have specified in the screenshot is not where your recovery.img is located... so keep typing ''cd.. enter'' until you're back at C:\ in the window, then type cd android-sdk-windows and hit enter, then cd platform-tools, and it should be able to find the recovery image.

you can open Android's SQLite database named /data/system/locksettings.db via ADB

1.My phone is locked.
2.By default it goes to USB tethering mode upon connecting to my PC(I changed the setting in DEV mode)
3. It is rooted
4. It has orange fox recovery installed
5. Again I am a noob right now (won't remain that way for too long) and need a tutorial of some kind to do this successfully.
6. I do not know SQL and so how to use it either, and for that matter Hashcat too.
The blog still remains difficult for me.

My guess is that your phone 's Android isn't properly rooted.
@jwoegerbauer what does properly rooted mean. All apps that require root works properly.

It's not interesting here whether apps that require root work or not. In your case it is only important whether SU-binary can be found by the system.
Anyway:
Some newer Android builds require the following additional ADB commands to be run first to disable Android's AVB-lock

Try this. Then run commands as listed above.
