XDA - Motorola Droid forum? - General Topics

Just curious whether you folks at XDA will be adding a forum/subforum for the Droid?

im just guessing this wont happen. this site modify phones by htc only.

yeah, like the HTC Palm Treo and the HTC Sony Ericcson X1, like he said

Actually, pretty sure HTC did manufacture the Xperia. The Treo on the other hand...
Anyway, I think it would be a shame to miss out on the Droid rush. It's going to be the biggest Android phone this year (if not longer) and will probably spawn a whole new wave of development.

HTC did manufacture the X1 and the Treo.
Historically, XDA-Developers has been HTC only. This is really crappy because there are other devices out there that could benefit this community if the forum sections were created. The Motorola Droid is one of them.

I'd love to see that happen
Since I just picked one up.

That's probably covered under the Hero subforum, since it's basically another CDMA HTC Hero.

I'm going to be really upset if my favorite XDA devs won't be working on the Droid platform.. I LOVE it and it's the first handset that can handle those crazy ROMs.

HTC Hero UI on Droid?
I just got a Moto Droid the other day over the Eris due to its keyboard and hardware specs...
BUT, the Eris has a much nicer UI (Home Screen, Contacts, Widgets etc) thanks to HTC (as usual)
Because both the devices are Android (however different versions from what I understand), is it possible to get the Widgets and Home screen from the Eris on the Droid??
I am obviously new to Android and have typically been a Windows Mobile user (Used the HTC TouchFlo on the Omnia and what not), and would really like to continue to use HTC's UI's on my Droid.
Do you think this is possible, and if so perhaps this particular topic could be a forum dedicated to it on XDA

The hero widgets are highly coupled with the framework of the device. Therfore if you wanted to run them they just simply wont work. There is a 3rd party alternative called beautiful widgets for $0.99 cents of the android market.

I have also picked up a Droid and want to see it here, until the Leo comes out this is the Android phone to have.

Ditto! Ditto! Ditto!

Agreed, lets hack this phone wide open even if it's not htc!

many unique problems for this platform, especially if you really want SenseUI.
Me personally, I'd rather see a Cyanogen build...but we need root first and foremost...and a good recovery img.

Screen capture of Droid Bootloader is here.

We are not that far, with the help of XDA team we could get there so fast.

Just so you all know... Alldroid.org supports the Droid... we're also getting clues on how to root it!!!

PLEASE
I would really like to see a Droid/ any other andorid phone sub forum. this site has the most expansive wealth of information and i feel that having XDA as a resource for Droid users would greatly advance the android platform.
TO XDA: i know you folks only do HTC phones but please, listen to the community so other members can help us out. just so you know all other fourms related to the DROID are disasters!! help we the droid users!

i second this request!

Yes please. Expand your views. It's not only HTC thats interesting

Getting new phone. Need help choosing.

So I've been a smartphone person for a while and the last good phone I had was the Nokia N91 which broke. I've been using a crappy Samsung slider to make/take calls and send/receive messages.
I'm getting a new phone and have narrowed down my choices to 2.
HTC HD2 (Leo) or the HTC Hero.
Now, I love the HTC Hero but the only thing keeping me is what I've heard about it being very laggy (and ive seen some videos, opening the mail takes at least 5-10 seconds). I have used the Android OS several times at the store and really love it (recently tried the HTC Droid Eric by Verizon).
I have also used Windows Mobile and find it okay, but seem to like Android better. Also, HTC Hero will NOT get 3G in the US...
I'm looking at the HD2 because it packs a lot of horsepower... 1Ghz is pretty dang nice, and from the videos I've seen lag does not exist AT ALL.
So now I have this dilemma... should I buy the HD2 or Hero. I guess it comes down to whether or not WinMo is better than Android (FOR ME. Please don't start a android vs winmo flame war).
What do you guys think?
P.S. I need to buy an unlocked GSM. No other options. Will probably get it from Middle East/Europe. Availability in a certain region is not an issue for me.
Welcome to HTC XDA! We highly recommend HTC HD2 top of the line PPC!! See the LEO section for the specs, answers & info...
I am personally waiting for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 which runs android, a very high resolution, and the snapdragon processor, in my opinion it is superior to the hd2 and the hero
Thanks galaxys for the warm welcome.
I'm not sure what you mean by PPC, but why exactly is it that you recommend it? The superior hardware?
and thanks jad for the response... I have considered the X10 and think its pretty cool but I'm not willing to wait and need a new phone NOW
PPC means Pocket PC. Anything that runs Windows Mobile is a pocket PC. It's not a term you see much nowadays.
The HD2 is probably the best PPC/WM device out there at the moment. As far as I'm aware (others please correct me if I'm wrong) the Eris is the Hero in another casing spcifically for Verizon. If only the Leo ran Android....
Ah okay thanks TheBrit
Yes you are correct about the Eris. Just different case.
Also, I've really fallen in love with android... so I guess I'll go for the Hero.
There's also the Samsung Moment that runs Android and has a physical keyboard.

Android on HD2

Hi all,
Sorry if this has been answered before!
Does anyone know if its possible to install an Android rom on the HTC HD2? That phone with android would be amaazing.
Thanks!
Not without a whole lot of work.
It is definitely a waste of that hardware to put wincrap on it.
The one reason I would NOT contribute to running android on that device is that every one of those devices that HTC sells, some amount of your $$ gets sent to microshaft, so strictly from the perspective of "I absolutely will NEVER give ONE THIN DIME to those greedy evil bastards", I would ignore the hardware and not do anything that could potentially boost its sales.
Always possible with XDA Dev...see this active thread in the Leo section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=578575
Thanks for the responses...
Yeah I would love to see Android 2.0 on a Snapdragon processor. I too have a distaste for contributing to MS by purchasing an HD2, but it would be worth it
I get the feeling the recently confirmed "Google Phone" will infact be a modification of the HD2. The thing is, it's so fricken perfect in terms of form factor, I hope they don't make it worse in an attempt to make it distinguishable different from the original
Fingers crossed. And thanks, Ill check out that link.

So do you own an HTC HD2 or not? If as you say you shouldn't have one, and how you would know if Android is not easy to install on HD2?
You can hate MS as we all do, but don't bad mouth a great piece of hardware, which maybe great if it runs Android.
wouldnt it easier to buy the nexus one ?
specs are close enough ....
maybe the release of this will make a port easier
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/01/26/htc-supersonic-htc-a9292-render-and-live-picture/
I too, would like to see an android release on the HTC HD2... I really expected more from winmo 6.5
i hope there will be a port for winmo6.5 on hd2
We're all waiting for this mate.
Better be aware of who you support

You complain about MS but think that Google is better? Really! You might want to check into the politics and beliefs of the Google CEO Eric Schmidt. In one of his most recent interviews he stated that he saw nothing wrong with controlling the news available to users via it's home page and search engine. Funnier yet is that they complain about China's censorship, I guess he beliefs censorship is ok as long as he is the censor.
Anyway, didn't mean for this to become a rant, but Google is no better than MS when it comes to attempting to control a market. Windows & Palm were first on the scene with smart phones and both of their operating systems have grown tremendously. I would even say that Apples iPhone OS would not be as intuitive today if it were not for MS and Palm.
Do you really want to port your own version of Android to HD2? It will never be as smooth and fast compared to say just buying an HTC Supersonic.
Also, what do you do with it when everybody has moved to Android 3.0? You won't have any support for it. The ROM Cook may no longer be interested with porting Android 3.0 to what would have been an old outdated piece of hardware in a year's time.
You're better off just buying an HTC Supersonic. At least you could pray that HTC would give you future Android versions when they become available.
I've played with a Nexus one and a HD2. The hardware is not close in my opinion. The supersonic (Evo) looks great but it's cdma.

I'm sure (or at least hopeful) that a GSM version will be available later. It's a shame to have such an excellent spec hardware not available to the rest of the world.

Really! I've gotten so tired of my Pro2 with WM 6.5, I would buy one in a heartbeat if it was GSM and supported my carrier's 3G. But of course, AT&T has to get the worst Android phones in history in its lineup while forgetting about HTC completely.
If the only thing to edit is the radio rom, shouldn't be such a big deal for all the developers here.
Really looking forward to my HD2 running android!!

I hope you know why At&t doesn't want htc smartphones on their lineup? The reason is because they dont want any htc phones to destroy the iphone. Which is true...sales will drop if a htc 4"3 screen showed up. Not to mention apple is sueing htc.
I just noticed the HTC desire has almost identical specs as the HD2, except for the screen size, most of it is the same, both are gsm....cant they port the android os from the desire on to the HD2..??

Android for the hd2 ?
windows mobile isnt what i expected at all . A total failure (WM6.5 )actually IMHO
Think the Droid Incredible ROM would work on a HD2?? I don't know if it being from Verizon would make a difference or not. BTW - Droid Incredible is the strangest name for a phone EVER!!

why dosen't XDA have the motorola droid section up?

I can't find it on these boards?
Because it is not in any way, shape or form an HTC device.
oh so dose the droid have there own boards like this one?

of course. and as we all know, palm devices like the Palm Treo which has it's own boards here are made by HTC right?! ..hmm wait!
edit: i just googled it, and they REALLY are made by HTC. Sorry my fault! i never heard of that up to now.
Still i don't understand why xda only concentrates on HTC devices...shouldn't a motorola milestone which is also based on android be as easily rooted as htc devices or are there big differences?

All the devices here are made by HTC I'm pretty sure if xda started modding non HTC devices They would have us shut down in no time lol one of the reasons they tolarate us is that we only mod HTC devices, the second they saw touchflo or sence on a non HTC device theyd go mental lol
MoDaCo seems to get away with it..
http://www.modaco.com/content/i8000...296984/custom-rom-le-o2-fusion-hd2-in-omnia2/
ok so if htc makes palm devices, do they also make Samsung, Acer, Toshiba, LG,and Sony devices?
The responses here are so dumb. We have non HTC devices here now. How can we be so ignorant to say something that no longer applies?
Just make a request for it, and it will get the support here; after all XDA supports Android and Windows Mobile devices.

Big question, which one?

So what's a better buy, since I am confused and conflicted as to what to get.
Motorola Milestone or Nexus One/Desire?
I actually have no clue, its confusing to think which one and every time I think I decide I go back to the middle.
And I know that for the Nexus One, this website has one strong modding front behind it, but I have no idea where, if any, modding movement exists for the Droid, since I haven't found anything on this forum.
What are your thoughts on it?

I personally have the N1 and also have T-mobiles "droids" aka cliqs... Htc is far better when it comes to hardware. I suggest the N1!
In my experience - if I want to get google/android updates ASAP I would only go with whatever google choses to sleep with (stock i.e. without any skin)
For GSM that would be the Nexus One.

nope, moto is lacking in the game... plus nexus isnt a branded phone... its a HTC/GOOGLE not a T-mobile/AT&T/Sprint/V-word phone that should be enough to go by in your choice...
I'm also kind of in a boat like this one. I have a G1 and desperately want to upgrade. I'm considering the EVO since Austin has a 4G tower here. The prices and plans are attractive too. The one thing holding me back however is the hotspot feature in froyo. Sprint will almost certainly cut this feature out of the froyo update for the EVO since they want to charge 30 bucks a month to use that. I'm wondering if there will be a version of froyo from cyanogen (or the many other developers out there) for the evo to circumvent this (not to mention to get rid of the Sense UI).
This isn't any easier a decision to make now aha.
I vote for Motorola milestone
considering its hardware keyboard
I have a Milestone and the hardware keyboard is useful, but I don't like the way Motorola have locked down the bootloader.
That means that even when rooted, we are limited in what can be hacked about!
I will be getting rid of the Milestone and getting a Desire soon if that tells you anything.

I see what you mean, well I've put in a few offers to some used N1s, my local shop stopped carrying them!!!
If you do not have any need for a hardware keyboard N1 will be better beause of the faster CPU.
If you like hardware keyboards like me you will forget about N1.
There are quite a few forums with support for the Droid/ Milestone.
Depends on the kind of work you want to do. If all you want is a shiny super modded device with great screen contrast (excluding touchscreen response) and speed and early updates, get Nexus One.
If you need to do a lot of typing and/or need better screen response, get Milestone.
While milestone doesn't have a dedicated community behind it, doing lots of rom porting, most of the useful N1 mods work on it. Also, it is a very solid and well built phone. The build quality compared to nexus one is equally good, if not better. You can also get it overclocked to about 1.2GHz which makes it run superfast, if you are worried about speed.

HTC sense port for droid x

I was wondering if it is possible if any developer(s) could make a htc sense hi port from the desire hd to the droid x
Thank you for your support community,

Obey the forum rules.
No. HTC Sense needs to have HTC hardware for the framework to run. It is impossible to run Sense on a Motorola device, just as it is impossible to run Blur on an HTC device.
Please look around the forum before asking questions that have been answered tens of thousands of times on XDA.
not always true, there was a blur rom for the HTC Dream/G1 a good while back but it was buggy

Funny answers, you got here..

If i had a DroidX, im sure, i could port it... i did it the other way around actually, but never released a droidx port, as it simply didnt offer anything good, so i went for droid2.
but yes, its for sure possible..
Yes it is possible but it will be very difficult because of the inability to run a sense-compatible kernel due to the signed bootloader

you dont know milestone? we got a locked kernel... so this kernel is in no way near HTC standards (far from it) as we cannot modify it at all.. PSK encryption key protected.
so i can only say... it was piece of cake to use htc sense on milestone... so htc is nothing special, it works great on my milestone.
ps: as i also noted, if i can use droidx/droid2 firmware on my milestone, the one i made for sense port i made for milestone should be easy to adapt to droidx if anyone would care looking into it.. they are having a droid port in place now, so droidx/droid2 here comes senseui soon to a phone nearby..
I am taking this on Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hopefully we will have sense on the droid X, and the Droid 2.

but thats just a helpful hint

So if sense is portable to the droid x...what about MIUI? <<<<<< I would love this.
Sense 3.5
Is this dead in the water? Looked pretty promising. Just bought my girlfriend the Rhyme. Would LOVE to have 3.5 on my Droid X. I would just buy the Rhyme, but the screen is just a tad too small (3.7) and the plum color isn't suitable for men to carry around. The cradle/dock that comes with it is awesome too.
