Google I/O Saphire/Magic phones (aka Google Ion) - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Would be interesting to collect information on the phones given out today at Google I/O (each attendee got one for free, a pretty nice surprise!).
Here's the phone info. Would be helpful if anyone familiar with phones from other sources can comment on how this compares and anything these builds and versions might mean?
Model: Google Ion
Firmware Version: 1.5
Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
Kernel Version: 2.6.27-00392-g8312baf
[email protected] #72
Build Number: CRB28
We've been told this phone is SIM unlocked, and has a bootloader which will allow flashing customized images (not yet confirmed - just got it a few hours ago ).

any screen shot of the phone at work?

Yeah, the kernel dude from the Android Dev team definitely confirmed that this phone has either the Engineering bootloader or the HardSPL because it is "capable of flashing any image".
Here's a screenshot of the phone's HUGE internal memory increase:

I also have a video of the team talking about how they feel about root at the Android Fireside Chat. Coming soon.

there is
http://androidcommunity.com/google-io-2009-htc-android-phone-unboxing-video-and-pics-20090527/
some pics and unboxing video

do you notice anything different on the os in compare to cupcake 1.5?or is just the ufficial cupcake?

In the video I'm uploading to Vimeo right now, the kernel chief (Brian, I think), talks about how he goes on xda-developers a lot. Haha.

I got my hands on an Ion phone too.
The fireside chats were great. The devs actually said they encouraging hacking and want the OEMs to ship a bootloader that allows easy flashing. Several of the guys said they visit XDA too.

Taylor likes dudes

Are the entering to the I/O conference cost any money?

I want free Google Ion too But I'm too far from Google IO conference

Here's the video of the Android Devs talking about root..
http://vimeo.com/4878214

The internal memory (flash) seems kind of low. The htc website says it has 512mbs of flash. So 295 megs available to the user doesn't seem that much. 217 is being used by the system?
Were you able to figure out how much RAM the HTC Magic has?
Supposedly it has 288 megs of RAM vs 192 megs on the G1.
The samsung i7500 supposedly has only 128 megs.
I'm considering either the magic or i7500 when it becomes available in the US, and the amount of RAM it has could be the deciding factor. The amount of built-in flash doesn't matter to me since any type of flash issues is solved by apps to sd.
Thanks,
Dave

Just so you all know:
I successfully have gotten root on the Ion. Brian from the dev team did confirm it has the engineering bootloader, so I went ahead and flashed Haykuro's "RootMe Rom", which unfortunately converts it to an HTC Magic model number, and I had to enter T-Mobile APN settings for the first time since the phone is unlocked. (Before, it would automatically configure all that). In fact, I could not get through Google account setup without selecting "skip".
Anyways, so I'm all set, if anyone has questions hit me up on gtalk [email protected] and I'll see if I can help you.
In other news, anyone going to be able to post the original Google Ion ROM so Haykuro can maybe modify and root it for us?

Disconnect helped set this up: http://andblogs.net/2009/05/ion-update-available/
this is a vanilla version of the rom. nothing special there. (should work on everyones sapphire / magic device atm)

Anyone installed this yet?
Assume you install the full package first, and then the update? Any instructions on how to do this?

it'd be nice to know the procedure to flash that ion rom into our magics, so then we can plot differences and tests...
i've read that requires test-keys , so a recovery.img original vodafone wont work?!?

Well, I'v installed by renaming the full image download to update.zip, wipe then apply. However, had to do this twice and now don't have the nandroid backup option. Assume I can't just reapply a previous nadroid backup?
Confused!

[ROOTED] Rogers 911 patched Dream

So after reading the recent root on the DroidX via boing boing I decided to poke it and see if it could help us on the Android1.5 dream.
Not just can it help us, but it works out of box.
For Upgrade Instructions goto:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Rooting_HTC_Branded_EBI1_Dreams
Simplified process (full process is on the wiki link above):
Install DroidX hack
run it
enter root shell
unlock recovery
flash recovery
flash dangerspl [This is very safe on EBI1 devices, its the EBI0 users that get into trouble]
erase rogers rom via fastboot [I always get an unstable install of custom roms if I skip this]
install rom of choice.
Remember to thank the people over at Droid X and All Droid (as I said I just ran it.. they did the hard work)
Edit: its all based on http://c-skills.blogspot.com/2010/07/android-trickery.html
This is a rather scary attack as it applies not only to the Rogers Dream but many other android devices (including the custom mod you are likely about to install)
Edit 8/13/2010: an exploid patch for cm5.0.8 is now available; Also patched in CM6-rc3
On this note if you where one of those bugging me to do some dangerous JTAG operation on your working phone... the answer is officially no, root it yourself.
Again the full detailed installation instructions can be found at:

HOLD ON, so this means they got past the bootloader (easily instructions too) lockdown by moto. Am I correct in assuming this will open up the moto milestone rooting scene in Canada and other places the milestone is?

I think it will give you root if you are an android device... if not a poke the code a bit to match whatever is slightly moved on your phone.. this is a bit of a scary exploit now that I'm looking at it closer.

root does not = custom roms. It means that you get superuser.apk and su access. They're still working on the bootloader.

Ok, of course my phone is fine, I was thinking for a friend.
Fortunately HTC doesnt pull that off
Wow. Good job as always, man! Keep up the good work. This is front page material.
has anyone here tryed it?
This is a God-send. The Droid-X people may have done all the work, but you're the one who brought it to us Rogers Dream owners.
Quite a few friends will love this! (I refused to do the update or sign the waiver, I was lucky and got a refresh before they stopped giving them out)
It worked for me, although the only rom that's successfully booted is CM5. I've tried a handful of others and they all hang at the rogers screen, any idea why?

Unless you change your radio to a 2.x version, you require EBI1 roms. EBI0 roms won't work.

Tell us the rom and someone can see if there is an ebi1 port (sometimes called 32a port) or create one if the dev blessed us with access to their kernel source (or who's binary kernel is in use and we find the original source)
Otherwise lookup fastbooting an ebi0 radio on your rogers dream (if your carrier is rogers also look up the wavier forum)
If you are confused stick with the ebi1 cm5.0.8 until you are sure how you want to proceed. You may however want the text patch in my sig.

that whole waiver thing seems unnessicary i never signed one and never lost data nor did i apply the update. i just ignored it and rogers ignored me, but i recently cancelled my data plan i wonder if they would allow me back on one :/
but either way for ebi1 kernal bcrook is the man to see http://twitter.com/bcrook88
personally i switched and never looked back
It is working excellent so far!!!
SPL 1.33.2005, Amon Ra 1.7.0
update: CM 5 is working great too. I haven't tried the nightly builds yet, but with the big thing in 2.2 being JIT, and hearing that it'd be stupid on the Dream, 2.1 is great for now!
If anybody needs a step by step, I wrote one up:
Post 911 to CM 5.0.8
@lbcoder and exterry, Yeah I had a feeling it might be the radio, but this is the first time I've touched my dream in seven months so I've forgot a lot and wasn't completely sure haha. Thanks for your quick replies though, I'll probably just downgrade my radio then. Is there any advantage to the new radio? Or was it made just so rogers could keep track of who did and didn't do the 911 update?
Just successfully got a oem replacement dream that had the e911 fix applied at the factory rooted with this. Huzzah!
EDIT: Now, while this is great for our needs, it should most likely be patched _immediately_. I get the feeling that it could be utilized to create all sorts of malicious applications.
Thanks I was about to JTAG
Works great!!!!

So what are we saying here? not able to flash if you are on 2.51, but if you are on 2.21 or 2.34 you can - makes sense as that was one of the issues with 2.51, but it was resolved.
I'm not going to be getting flash happy with this one anyway, people should lear the lesson from 2.51, best to wait a few days and see how it pan out. I do want to get the sbf though so I can take a look at it.
I am downloading it now ... and yes it's froyo! Will mirror once it's done.

Thats the info we need, its times like this you need a 2nd phone for dev stuff, coz I'm not flashing the sbf on my only phone for sure.
I agree, don't suggest flashing this until its been looked at. Be patient, I can assure you it won't be offering that much more that 2.1 with JIT is already in the interim.

NEW LEAK; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929646
READ!
Some users are reporting problems. Now we (I) don't believe this is due to the leaked software but more down to people who don't think, read or understand what they are doing.
If you don't know what a baseband is, don't install.
If you don't know what a nandroid is, don't install.
If you don't know this is LEAKED unsupported, unreleased software and what that means, don't install.
I don't mean to come across as rude but this thread was more aimed at people who know what they where doing and rom-devs to include in their ROMs. NOT for a general user who just want 2.2.1.
Please think twice before installing! And if you brick your device then you have no one to blame but yourself for not reading / understanding / etc!

So uh, we need someone brave to sets this sucka out.

There's also a nandroid hosted there.
Translated from there:
It only features the English, Spanish, Portuguese language.

OC not (yet).

I am still not certain about this build. We will know for sure if it is the final Brasilian release when somebody checks it for bugs.. It might be one of the test beta builds, am I right?
If it's a final release, we may expect a perfect Cyanogen ROM
Hi,
I´m using this leaked rom, for 4 hours.
It´s really a Brazilian Rom with oficial apps from the Vivo Operator.
The new battery management looks great, with a night configuration that saves power when you´re sleeping, tomorrow morning I´ll know if it´s really work.
Looks fast, and automatically update to the new android market.
The new camera app is great.
The cellphone became hot during a call of 45 minutes, but now it´s cold. This issue really bore me, from every rom that I tried, without OC.
I used, ShadowMod version and CM version, let me see for the next few days if I´ll change it again.
Tkz,
Reiner
I'm using the rom too. Everything seems to be running nicely. It has the new multitouch keyboard. Overclock isn't working though; it seems pretty snappy though. Only about 150mb for apps (Of course, its filled with lots of motorola junk like Motonav, motoID, phone portal..etc.). Battery life seems great.
Did you guys get the data/apps wiped or it is really a service version?
I flashed the rom too, i need to wiped to pass the M logo, now the phone are running, after the flash, i flashed the vunerable bootloader and wiped the phone. lets see how it runs.
EDIT: that's it.
this is a froyo rom from VIVO operator for Brazil.
see pic.
i have only one reboot, but i think is cuz i made something wrong.
The rom is fast, really fast.

There is nothing to suggest this is final. Seeing as Motorola has been saying the ROM is all done and just waiting carrier approval for over a month now and this kernel was built only a few weeks ago suggests they are far from ready to roll out.
I mean, look at the last two versions of leaked kernels.
First; You had to reset after connecting any type of power source otherwise it would die in a few hours.
Second; Was highly unstable and crashed.
Although all the carrier branding leads me to believe we are close.
I will try it now! Thank you guys for posting!

Yes stock speeds.
I was getting worried then.
Would you mind running Linpack / Quadrant at 1Ghz? <3
Does SetCPU really overclock the processor? Someone wrote that overclocking doesn't work... yet..
I hope that Cyanogen mod and other froyo ROMs will take advantage of this leaked one

Htc Evo Design 4g & Hero S Discussion Thread

Ok since there isn't one thread dealing with these two phones I am starting one. Then at least people can find stuff or dicuss the said phone. I will add any useful links and how to's to this post and posts there after. Any way on to what we got....
How to root your Evo Design 4g or Hero S:
There is a few ways out there from manual to auto. If you are wanting temp root you will need to look at zergrush. Which the link I don't have right off. If you want perm-root you can use either of the following tools.
My One Click Perm-Root & Busybox Installer tool/script (Sorry no linux help at the moment. Windows only) Confirmed on many devices also:
http://2fastroms.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2485
Frigid's HTC Super Tool v2 (I can't confirm it works, how ever looks like it does. Followed by some nice options):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343114
How to unlock your Evo Design 4g or Hero S:
This isn't really a guide as htc has a good one. How ever I am going to add to it. You need to go to the following link http://htcdev.com/ , Once there click the unlock bootloader. You will be asked for you login info, if you don't have a account you need to make one. As you are starting through the instructions you will see you need to install adb to continue. How ever you can down my script, cd the tools directory, which will have adb. Drivers are also in the thread for my perm-root tool. Then all you need to do is get the fastboot from the sdk 13 linked in htc's guide. Followed by put it into the tools directory of my script. That or do it the way htc has you do it. Either will be fine and get the job done.
Now this may not happen to you but did for me. Where after pulling the token the phone froze. I had to do a battery pull, reboot to h-boot and select fastboot again. Where I was able to continue pushing the unlock file.
Kernel's for Evo Design 4g or Hero S:
Don't know any or if source was released yet. If not start bugging htc for source code....

Then one more for good measure....
I've been sending HTC an email every two days asking for source since getting the Design. I don't expect to see any movement before the end of the year, but it'd be helpful to get some more squeaky wheels out there.
Any tips or suggestions when writing such an email?
Sent from my *rooted* EVO Design using xda premium app
Even though I hate to say it but you aren't going to get anywhere e-mailing them. It takes a person 2 secs to copy and paste 1 of 3 generic e-mails. You are better off calling and asking about the kernel source. As even a short call will last 5 mins, which means more out of htc's pocket.
Was the only way the htc merge source got released
Is it safe to just ask for the design kernel or do we need to ask for the hero kernel also? Anything else we should ask while on the phone, or just keep it on 1 request?

Politely request access to the kernel source for the HTC Evo Design 4g per the terms of the General Public License version 2, under which the source in question has been published.
The official way to contact HTC is here: http://www.htc.com/us/about/contact-by-email
HTC is infamous for dragging their feet on source requests, but has shown that they can be pressured into doing so more quickly if folks make some noise. You can also try by phone, which may yield faster results.
EDIT: Asking for the Hero S source would be fine, too. Although I think both devices are covered by a single kernel config (Kingdom)
Would have to agree completely. How ever the hero s/design 4g should be the same kernel source. Though curious what is your guys kernel version?

According to that I am guessing that would be the design. Where everything is the same cept the letters after 10-. Where the hero is running a newer kernel by a month.
one click root v1.1 got me to root. bootloader still says locked and i haven't messed with a recovery yet. just letting yal know root is just one click away.
Since we still don't have an official thread for the hero S or the EVO design don't forget to vote whoever hasn't. Here is the link.

The stock Hero S image above does appear to work. Rename to PH44img.zip. Copy to the root of your SD. Boot into the bootloader and allow it to install.
Can someone post the stock:
software number
PRI Version
Kernel version
baseband version
build number
Just want to verify what I have after flashing the posted stock image compared to a truly stock device.
Thank you

After weeks of emails to HTC, I have received their boilerplate "within 90-120 days" response along with an invitation for further comment. Now on to the next step...
---
I am very sorry to hear this, as I expected a different answer. Is HTC aware that it is violating GPLv2 with this policy, and leaving itself open to enforcement action by the Free Software Foundation?
Please refer to Section 4.1.2 of the compliance guide, which states that source must be made available at the time that a device is shipped with an offer of source. Below, I have provided a URL as well as cited the relevant portion for review.
It would be regrettable for me to have to refer this matter to the FSF for enforcement action. Hopefully further review will clarify where HTC is incorrect in its source distribution policy, and corrections can be made to avoid non-compliance issues.
Regards

http://www.softwarefreedom.org/resources/2008/compliance-guide.html
Finally, it is unacceptable to use option (b) merely because you do not have Corresponding Source ready. We find that some companies chose this option because writing an offer is easy, but producing a source distribution as an afterthought to a hasty development process is difficult. The offer for source does not exist as a stop-gap solution for companies rushing to market with an out-of-compliance product. If you ship an offer for source with your product but cannot actually deliver immediately on that offer when your customers receive it, you should expect an enforcement action.

[Q] Reducing Bloat on Huawei Ascend Y100 (U8185) - Root Required?

I recently bought a PAYG Y100 on O2 to act as a wireless hotspot when I'm working in offices without convenient Internet access, but now I'm itching to root the device and clean out some of the bloat.
I realise it's pretty new and (I think) exclusive to O2, but there's not much information about it in the forums. Do I need to root it to delete the unwanted APK files? Are there any tools that can root this phone (searched and tried some, without success)?
If there's no tool, is there a rooted ROM that's guaranteed not to brick the U8185? It's running 2.3.6 and the link below implies that it's got the same kernel as the U8818, U8815 and U8655. I've drawn a blank on working rooting tools for those devices too.
http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwi...=toDownloadFile&flay=software&softid=NDU5NTk=
Any advice gratefully received
I recently bought one too, with the sole intent of hacking it. I'm just experimenting and documenting as I go. Right now I have stock recovery, fastboot mode, and a kernel compiled. I haven't found any stock ROMs for download, and I haven't figured out how to get root yet...
My notes so far: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UxPGSzPgogNU6VkjNFlASJgpG3nVEgLoE-8K3Qlo43Y/edit
I'm building an army to help hack this device... hang tight, we'll have root and stuff soon I hope.
Yes you need root permission. Just get rooted (easily done) then get Titanium Backup from the play store and it will allow you to remove bloatware of any kind. Be safe though and dont delete important system files. or install a clean rom with no bloatware

I'm not aware of any root on this device yet. I tried for some time yesterday, but I never managed. It's a bit harder on U8185 because we don't have any stock ROMs yet... kernel source is nice, but we don't have a RAM disk to pair with custom kernels, and no stock kernel flash back in case we brick it.

This is great news - glad to see that greater minds than mine are working on this phone. I'm very pleased with it, but it needs a few tweaks. I'll be watching your progress with interest. Thanks.
Root... w00t?
It was a bit crude... but I got root on the Y100:

ClockworkMod Recovery working
I just finished porting ClockworkMod Recovery to the Ascend Y100. This means we can now flash ROMs, kernels, root, etc. Here's a screenshot:
You can build it yourself from my CyanogenMod 9 device tree: https://github.com/alanorth/android_device_huawei_u8185
Stay tuned for downloads, instructions, etc.
Edit: I've posted more info and download links on my blog here: http://mjanja.co.ke/2012/07/clockworkmod-recovery-for-huawei-u8185/ I'll post on XDA as I get more time.
Excellent news - on holiday at the moment but will check this out when I get back. Thanks

Hey. There's a lean custom ROM here: http://blog.podtwo.com/android/rom/de-branded ROM for Huawei U8185 [gingerbread].html
It's a debranded stock ROM, so nothing crazy like custom kernels or weird bootscreens. Just lean.

Stock roms
I founf this link for stock rom's not up to speed with rooting these devices yet, very new to the smartphone scene. Hope this will help reduce the bloatware on theis fone as it seems quite nice ( especially at £25 from O2 shop last week )
*** forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f717/f-q-frequently-asked-questions-1411931/index2.html#post8821770 *** can't post link yet
I've already got it unlocked from O2 ( via online form on O2 website ) and would love to free up some space on it.
Ideally I'd like to back up the existing setup and then replace with a 'clean' stock rom. Not overly bothered about rooting it, just cleaning it up.
Hope this help

Alan, I bought this device back in February to use as a hotspot on camping holidays, very interested on getting CM on it... Read your blog posts and see you have GPS and WiFi working somewhat... Any progress on this? Have been flashing ROMs since the G1 but have never gotten my hands dirty and built from source. Do you have a link to a recent build, or is there a way for me to build from your sources? Really excited about this. Thanks!
