Rooting the Magic - Idea - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

I think, it would be possible to root the Magic with the goldcard method.
But there's one problem:
If you flash to rc29, there is no input method.
So, someone has to create a custom .nbh of the current rooted 1.5 builds.
Creating .nbh's must be possible think, because it worked for Windows Mobile .nbh's too.

Why wouldn't you be able to just flash to RC29, then hook the phone up to a PC with the USB cable, and run adb shell? From within adb shell you can do the telnetd and remount. Same as if you typed it on the phone keyboard.

You're right. But is RC29 compatible with the Magic?

maybe we can ask JesusFreke to help us? he's a great developer and he done and do a lot to the G1 community...

RUU Updates HTC: BE CAREFUL

--- Updated and simplified
Updates from HTC are randomly released for countries and regions. These Update may lock your phone. As of today, phones can be unlocked again by using the GOLDCARD approach. However, there is a much simpler way to prevent bad things from happening:
If you like flashing HTC roms and have no intention to lock your phone, follow these steps:
On the PC
1. Double Click the .exe from the update. Wait for the first window to appear (DO NOT CONNECT YOUR PHONE). Don't close the application but do not continue
2. Open explorer and navigate to the hidden directory:
Windows 7: \users\$username$\AppData\Local\Temp\... followed by something like ...\{2A3DF7FC-1693-4C53-8883-6CF09DED700D}\...
Vista: documents and settings\.....
3. You should find the install application files along with a file "Rom.zip" (40 to 90 Megs)
4. Extract the ROM.zip to your SDK Tools directory, where fastboot.exe resides
5. open command shell and navigate to your Tools directory (supposing SDK, adb and fastboot are installed)
On the Phone
6. Enter recovery console on phone (press "home" + then "on")
7. Do a nandroid backup
8. Select Wipe your phone
9. Hold "back" and select "reboot system" in recovery to enter Fastboot mode
On the PC
10. Type: "fastboot flash boot boot.img" .... wait to complete
11. Type: "fastboot flash system system.img" .... wait to complete
12. Type: "fastboot flash userdata userdata.img" .... wait to complete
13. [Optional] Type: "fastboot flash radio radio.img" .... wait to complete (note: some HTC radios locked windows mobile phones. I am not sure whether this applies for Android)
14. Reboot your phone
15. Keep the update if you like it, revert to backup via recovery and nandroid in case you don't
And sorry for any confusion caused...
Regards,
fde
Thanks a lot mate... I will try the official sense for my magic then using this method first =D...
Are you sure....
That this will work? I have made the RUU Flash: RUU_Sapphire_HTC_Europe_2.20.401.2_HTC_Nordic_release_signed_NoDriver
And that resulted in:
HBOOT-1-33-0014
CPLD-12
RADIO-3-22-23-18
I don't understand what you are meaning about the Radio.img file.
And what about the HBOOT file?
Yes it works. Just verfied it aigain. What the RUU package does is:
1. Extract the application to a temp file
2. Use ADB to flash the ROM to your phone
By the approach described in the first post, the application unpacks itself into a temp directory. This allows you to access the ROM-File which is stored as ROM.zip or something similar. By moving only the vital Boot, System and Userdata, you avoid flashing your Recovery console or Bootloader (Hboot).
It implies of course, that you DO NOT continue with the RUU application as soon as the first window becomes visible. (I will adjust the above Tutorial and make it simpler).
Problem
But the problem is that I allready have flashed my phone, is this the way to revert is så I can root it again and put custom roms on it again?

I also want to know how I can flash new ROM since people said that my spl is perfected after upgrading
I was learned that we need to use goldcard method to root again.
In our case, any idea which ROM to use as we gotta use higher ROM?
Or are we able to gain root access without touching the existing ROM?
Now even cannot boot to recovery mode.
So stupid to upgrade it although the ROM is stable and fast but no root access sucks.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
thihaz
Well I guess my post was too late then.
However, the GOLDCARD approach, is said to allow succesful flashing of the engineering SPL or 1.33.0009. Do that and your back in business.

The problem with the goldcard method is that you lose the roms as well...
Sir, would you please let me know how to flashing engineering SPL, right now i have HBoot-1.76.007 which shipped with the Singapore HTC sense rom.
BTW: i don't care i will lose the rom or not.
Many thanks!
I flashed using RUU_Sapphire_HTC_Asia_WWE_2.16.707.3_SG_release_signed_NoDriver.exe with golden card, but got "check main rom verion" error msg.
then flashed using RUU_Sapphire_HTC_Asia_WWE_2.53.707.2_SEA_test_signed_NoDriver.exe with golden card, same error msg again.
I really have no idea how to flash back to engineering SPL, i'm stuck in Singapore HTC sense rom.

I did this twice on a Swiss Update, which btw wasn't worth applying. Just by the Size it's rom1.zip.
Let me download the Singapore and see what I can do.... But then looking at the guys post it seems the second file in the post is what you need. Download this package and only flash boot, system and data in fastboot mode. (From Step 4. onward in the guide). Anyway I will have a look.

For now the only method I know is the goldcard one... But in my country, using the goldcard method, makes the magics lose the 3g, edge or any internet mobile connection... =(...
Be careful, by using this method you can not upgrade to Snese UI (example TW). The reason being system image in Sense UI is larger than the previous 1.5 ROM system image, so system partition needs to be re-sized, which the RUU update does it for you. Otherwise you are struck with failed system image flashing.

Downgrading 32B 1.6 Vodafone Magic

Ive been looking all over the forum to find a answer to this but it ive getting many different answers and dont know which one is right. My phone is a HTC Magic UK vodafone brand with a 32b board. It also has the newest 1.6 OTA update installed with the 1.33.0004 HBOOT. Ive been told that i need to downgrade to 1.5 but using the command "fastboot boot <Recovery Image>" im able to load the Amon-RA recovery. Using the recovery ive been able to create a nandroid backup but my question is if i used the recovery to wipe then install a ROM will this break the phone or do i need to downgrade first. Also could i flash the recovery image instead of just booting it.
I have the same phone as you.
I followed:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
Goto the "Non-TMobile 32B Magics" section and follow. It's what I did and it seemed to be the only way to get my phone to 1.5. You have to put it to 1.5 as 1.5 has a security hole in it to allow you to gain Root access to the device.
Thank You, i'll have read through and if i fully understand it i'll give it a go.
ive getting up to the point where it asks me to enter the command "adb push C:\recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img /sdcard/RA152G.img" the command says it completed successfully but the file wasnt on the sdcard. I copied the file manually and renamed it to RA152.img and entered the command from the guide "adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/RA152G.img", the command prompt said "flashing recovery from /sdcard/RA152G.img" and nothing after that. After resetting the phone into the recovery mode, its just the default recovery mode so it hasnt flashed correctly. Does anyone know what i should do now.
Edit: Ive tryed using fastboot but it said signature verify failure
Re-download the file, do an MD5 check on it and then flash the phone again.

Thanks MilanoChris buit ive checked the MD5 and tryed to reflash it about 10 times.
I still havn't managed to root it yet anyone got any ideas?
The command "adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/RA152G.img" isn't working there is no error message but when I boot into recovery it is the original one. Does anyone know any why it hasn't actually flashed it and alternative commands I can use instead.
Edit: Also using the command "adb push C:\recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img /sdcard/RA152G.img" doesn't work, it says it was successful but when I check the sdcard it isn't there. Anyone know why this is.
If you haven't downgraded yet the recovery won't flash. All of the steps for non-tmobile 32B's are after downgrading. The only thing that is different is how you get the recovery flashed. Are you still having issues with the sappimg.nbh file from Cyanogen?
Thanks but how do I downgrade first as the guide on the site doesnt have a section for dowgrading non mytouch magics.
Sorry if I wasn't very clear on that! The guide is a little frankensteined for you folks using non mytouch magics. What you want to do is follow the normal procedures for downgrading. As soon as you have downgraded to 1.5 in the normal steps it's time to jump over to the non tmobile specific procedures using adb.
Hope this is a little more clear!

[Solved] [Q] New TF300T user unlock/recovery/root (only HTC exerience)

What do I have to do to install a custom recovery and get root?
Where do I get the ASUS specific drivers for all of normal, recovery
and boot-loader modes, for adb, fastboot and 'disk drive'?
I can use ADB and fastboot SDK utilities from the Win7 console prompt.
the appropriate dll's and exe's are in windows path.
Are there special things to do like HTC's hboot unlock procedure?
I saw an apk file on ASUS's website for unlock, how does that work?
I found 1-click root script that is supposed to install an CWM
custom recovery and get root for you. Do I need to do anything prior
to running that to unlock the boot loader, so it will accept the fastboot
commands? Besides setting usb debug and any allowing any apk?
I don't know how to interact with the ASUS boot loader for
loading updates. For HTC I only needed a specially named zip
file on the root of the ext sd card and push buttons to start
the process. Is it similar? :fingers-crossed:

Can I flash cwm via fastboot w/o unlocking? I just want to root
to be able to run Titanium backup and Root Explorer tools.
Stock ROM is fine, only need cwm to get root.
The device was purchased a few days ago, (waiting for it
to arrive), so its probably .29 or .30 from factory.
I discussed the issues with ASUS and they kept reading
the text of the warning message about unlocking
instead telling me how / what to do to root.
If I understood correctly, after turning off 'fast boot'
and turning on 'USB debugging', I should be able to get the
stock boot loader into fastboot USB mode following the power on
volume button presses, then use fastboot flash recovery to
store the cwm recovery.img in the recovery partition.
I'm unsure what it is that unlock boot loader apk actually does ?
With HTC it was the hboot software version that determined
if fastboot commands were accepted. Perhaps when I actually
have the device, I'll understand better.
With that done, flash the root-signed.zip from cwm to root?
Cavsoldier already advised you to do your own research. All your questions have been answered, both for your first post and your second.
I'm not entirely sure why you seem so determined to flash CWM for root. They are completely unrelated. You only flash CWM when you unlock the bootloader. You do not have to unlock your bootloader to root the device. Just use this thread.
Also not sure why you're asking Asus how to root their product. That's a big no no. Companies don't like when you root their products. Even if the CSR knows how to root the device, they're not allowed to tell you. They'll just read from a script like they did to you.
Honestly, I'm not sure why I'm bothering to answer this. All the info you could possibly need is in the thread that was linked in the second post. All of it, for every question you've asked in both of your posts in this thread. Anything root or ROM related is in that thread. It links to several rooting methods, most of which do not require CWM, let alone an unlocked bootloader. So, basically, why haven't you clicked the link in the second post? Do it.
*sigh* sorry for being dumb
Alright -- I admit I couldn't find the search forum
button on the phone interface. After I looked via a
laptop (so I had the desktop view) it was where I
thought it was.
In any case, I found the utility script debugfs-root-v1.8
which uses all adb commands so it doesn't need to be able
to run fastboot boot loader commands. It looked like the
tricky stuff was being run on the tablet via adb shell
commands and adb control commands. If I understood
it, it leaves the tablet rooted without unlocking the boot
loader. So if I can live without nandroid backups, I can just
leave the OEM stock recovery alone.
Is there more to unrooting than removing superuser.apk
and restoring the stock su?
Would installing the current official firmware work
similar to HTC's RUU's and replace everything?

To unroot, there's an option in superuser. Installing the new firmware will not wipe data.

Downgrade to lower version to use revolution

Im trying to get my desire s downgraded, rooted and be able to install a custom rom on it. I have searched and tried all guides on here but none of them seem to work anymore there are always files missing, web sites down or just things out of date I already have a gold card on my memory card.
I cant use revolution as my version is too high and needs to be downgraded can someone help me plz with the files or destination of them thanks.
Re. Downgrade....
Hallo...I am attaching zip with the files i`ve downloaded someday long ago,
,there is also file without extension which you can open wirh any text editor-
- it is description i`ve got from the original thread about the downgrading procedure..
I hope this is all you need to proceed to tthe fruitful end...
Good luck
And one more thing, those files were ment for versions lower than ics
so if you are running ics, they might be useless...No harm in trying though
Edit. I do not have the ruu but there is a beautifull thread in development section:

you can find many answers there ...

are you rooted- if so then after adb shell you shall press enter
,and if you see a $ sign, type su
then in your device superuser app will ask you for superuser rights for the shell-
you grant it there
then in the terminal the sign should change to #
then you are ready for chmod 777[space]/data/local/....

after you`l have succeded this procedure to the very end and have rebooted the device succesfuly!!

and then your live with downgrading will be much easier

2. superuser.zip flash from recovery

Re. Downgrade....
hoooo... pull the horses... when i read my post, it looks bit chaotic,
let us organise it ....
first:
you said before that you are unlocked- if that is true then either by htc dev or your device is natively
opened by manufacturer..either way you can flash recovery and root your phone.
Second:
if the first line in your bootloader(phone off then symultanously pressing power and volume down)
states >> locked<< then your phone is in an untouched state- stock
Third:
if your device is stock, and unrooted, without custom recovery
then the files from the downgrade zip are needed,
- zerg rush which is an exploit that lets us get temporary root for the shell,
and it is gone after you reboot the phone.
- misc_version that lets us change-or fool the phone about the software version that we have on board
Now, there is much more to it but.... see first what you can do with what you know already

I am not in your skin so it is realy difficult for me to advise you
either way but:
you can try again htc dev (or wait for email from them-check if you`ve followed their procedure to the letter)
procedure that is easier for all of us with less expearience
you can try to downgrade and s-off with another procedure- which is more difficult but works for many people,
have to decide yourself
I am s-on again- with an unlocked bootloader, because i am comfortable with it- not need s-off for now really,

[Q] HTC One & Mini not recognized on pc in fastboot

Hi All
Now a proud owner of HTC One mini (uk) but am having issues trying to unlock bootloader, root and install custom rom.
for some reason my PC will not recognize my mini in fastboot mode . i have re installed the usb drivers and even tried to connect my wifes HTC one which i have previously rooted ...but it will not connect to either of the two.
I would be grateful if the community could offer a solution or advice, Thanks
oh forgot to say pc running windows 8.1
Edit: I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979 on the portal. it has ADB,FASTBOOT and DRIVERS needed . Not tried it myself as reverted to windows 7 however, many users confirming that it works on win 8 & 8.1.
I hope this helps, any thanks is given to the developer "Snoop05" as i am just posting the link.
cheers

Search around to see if you can find a updated version? Let me explain to you how I did it. First, I unlocked my bootloader. Second, I downloaded the twrp and magiorom r3. Third hold shift and right click on the flashboot folder that you downloaded from htcdev and click on the open command window here. Rename you twrp to recovery. If your twrp file says img on it then try recovery.img, if not then type recovery. And on the cmd type flashboot flash recovery.img. Then you go back to bootloader and go to recovery and follow all the steps on the magiorom link. Don't forget to thank me. And btw, I didn't have to download any of those adb files. You root your phone when you have twrp. It'll ask you if you want to root. Say yes!!!!
