which one shall I buy? - General Topics

hi folks,
I am looking for a new pda phone.
it absolutely must have:
windows mobile
touch screen
internal gps device
wifi
modem that can be managed as a serial port modem with at commands from a windows mobile application
does anyone have a clue, which one to buy?
regards
mx-roadster

me too however will run modem through a usb connection.. at the moment i have a vario2 which does this except inbuilt GPS... not sure if its worth going for a vario 3 or waiting for a better one eg the sony ericson(SE) one.
How long till SE comes out... as due an upgrade on tuesday and need internal GPS by August at latest (job dictated this)

hi
at the moment I do have a kaiser 130. but it´s not mine - it´s a friend´s machine...
most important thing to me is that I can use the internal modem in an application I will write in vb.net to call another computer and deliver some data.

go for the touch cruise It's a bit pricy the so worth it

AT&T Tilt - HTC TyTn II = $$$$$

Looking for buying an HTC handset but which one???

Hi,
I am a previous user of an HTC Blueangel and a SPV C500 when I was in France then I moved to UK where I choose a Blackberry 8700g but I am not feeling really happy with it.
I mean the Blackberry is a great handset in term of reliability and it is doing what it is supposed to. But it is not really a flexible. In fact, I found that the software range is really narrow and expensive. Also, I am missing the use of a stylus. However, the jog dial is really great.
Since I can use the MS Push mail with my company email, I am really thinking to switch back to a Pocket PC phone.
By the past, I really liked my SPV C500 but I don't think I can go for a Smartphone now, I think it won't be practical for writing email and so on.
To summarize I would be happy to have some people point of view of which handset would be the best for the following requirements (MS Push Email, I am not playing game, I am not using a GPS, I am using a Samsung bluetooth headset, listen to some music sometimes and watch some video sometimes, WIFI, sliding keyboard would be appreciated, possibility to use Skype or other VOIP system if possible.....).
Any help is much appreciated.
Finally, I have some newbie question:
- Is anybody using his Pocket PC with T-Mobile Web n walk in UK?
- If the device is not AKU is it possible to upgrade it to have this functionality (maybe flash firmware)?
- Does web n walk allow the use of MSN on T-Mobile UK Web n walk?
- For the MS Push Mail is it enough to have a data plan (like Web n Walk)?
Sorry for the long post. But I am a bit lost.
Thank you very much for your help.
Julien
I think the new TyTn / Hermes will be perfect for you.
Sliding keyboard, AKU 3.0 with all it's goodies, WIFI G, BT 2.0 400MHZ processor and 2MP camera as a bonus (+ VGA camera for video calls).
I am not on T-MBILE but I can answer a couple of your questions:
1) All WM5 devices manufactured today come with at least AKU 2.0 newer devices come with AKU 3.0 and up. Some older devices get updates from the manufacturer but not all.
2) All you need for push mail is internet access (GPRS / UMTS / WIFI) and an Exchange server on the other side.

Oops. My mistake, somehow I remembered seeing it with the green windows screen.
Still I liked it from the brief experience I had with it.
How is it working out for you?
The T-Mobile version of the Hermes is the MDA Vario II
Just in case you didn't know...
Thank you guys for the information.
Indeed I think I will go for the Hermes. The only problem might be the budget.
What about he MDA Vario (i.e. Qtek 9100) is it good? I am a bit worried since the processor is only 200Mhz.
I will try to see if I can trade my blackberry against a Hermes or another one (with complement maybe).

It's pretty good - see for example my game reviews, where I also elaborate on the given title's playability on the Wizard.
hi julien
check ebay and see what price you can get for your old phones.better than trading in !

Get the Vario II (Not the Vario)
Vario = Wizard = 200MHz
Vario II = Hermes = 400MHz

Orbit 2 vs. Stellar

Hi,
I'm currently using the O2 Orbit (original) phone, and have really enjoyed my time with it. HOwever, I am now due an upgrade
I am debating between the Stellar and the Orbit 2. I don't miss the keyboard on the Orbit (had the Mini IIs prior, which had keyboard of course), but I wouldn't be too depressed to have one. As far as I can see, there's not much to seperate the two phones, but from user experience, which one would you buy, and why?
(or can someone think of any other alternatives?)
A.
Hi,
I found the Kaiser (o2 Stellar) very bulky, that's why I changed. Also fm radio on orbit II, better touch flo experience. Check out the new ppc's from the Barcelona WMC2008. maybe u ll find something worth waiting for. but in any case, i don't think they will be in stock with any operator soon enough for ur upgrade. i d go for the orbit II.

I'm slightly worried about the Polairs' video driver issue... or is this not so much of a problem?
kaiser and polaris suffer from the same driver thing
people report that htc have bulged and will pay qualcom for the driver
they so far been too cheap to pay for
otherwise another possiblity could be other devices comming out using the same chip
like toshiba
Definitely go fot the Polaris, man! I'm tellin' ya
It's slimmer, more solid, and pretty And if you don't miss the keyboard of the Mini S (heh, I also had one, then changed it for a Neo (Prophet) and didn't miss the keyboard ), the Polaris is maybe the best PPC out there.
My opinion - BioTouch is much better than an old touch screen combined with a hw keyboard. And with the number of the input apps out there, it's the ultimate choice.
Tried Opera 9.5 yesterday - amazing. This browser makes your PPC the ultimate mobile internet device and combined with the BioTouch it simply rocks!

Can I load Windows 2003 on HTC Touch/Dual /O2 Flame

Hi all,
I have been using o2 XDA and XDA II mini for many years , i tried almost all new phones with WM5/6 and i am very much sure that it does not serve my purpose and work.
Can I buy a new 02 / HTC touch dual or tytn and load windows 2003 on it.
I understand that i will loose warranty etc. but is it possible. pros & cons?
Can i do it ? how ?
thanks
roms are tailored 100% for a device
so if the device maker never made a 2003rom for a device
one would have to start from scratch and maybe
have to reverse engineer drivers if some were requied
and not available in a wm2003 model

if someone really wants to spend money and energy he can,but it would be better to have wm5 or 6 for some devices like magician instead an overcomed 2003 for newer ones like touch dual, pharos, cruise, diamond
and by the way people developing os are trying to make a better os every time, and in most cases they do it, so you get better memory handling, better drivers...faster device if you want it that way
WOW! Why would you want to put a server OS on your phone? lol

do you have a specific for example compatibility problem with WM5+?
I have over 10,000 client contacts on my phone , I transferred data to couple of new phones with wm5 and wm6. All is well till I try to search. When i search for a contact it takes around 5 mins on new phones with wm5 and wm6 . It takes 3-4 secs on the the XDAII and XDA mini for the same. having tried many phones and tools , i assumed that the problem should be with OS. with improved graphics and whole lot of other features which take up the active resources may be the search module does not get all that is required.
MY xda mini 2003 / xda II 2002 have less features ,less graphics so they are faster is what i have concluded from all these experiments that i have done wit new phones.
Thanks

If you compare the search tool with my kind of data, you will understand taht the new OS is not of any help to me. I agree , that there may be whole lot of new features and drivers , But search in a n integral part of the os and don't understand why that should change. and it works superb in earlier versions 3 secs V/s 5 mins to search.
Your problem is caused by a new way of working with memory in WM5+ systems. WM2003 used part of RAM as a storage medium for installed programs and also contact databases were located there. WM5+ uses internal flash instead. Data from flash doesn't disapear when you run out of battery juice. On the other hand it is a numerous times slower. However i cannot imagine the slowdown would have been so drastic. I would advise you trying the fastest possible device with lots of RAM (Samusng Omnia i900 or HTC Touch Diamond). It is possible the slowdown will be more acceptable. If it will be no success you can modify some ROM to use RamDisk as a storage medium. However, there are no new devices with WM2003 ROMs available.
That is the most convincing answer that i have got since last year when i started looking for replacement for my XDA.
After trying almost every new and latest PDAs in the market, I am sure that the new PDAs will not be any great help
BUT your statement - " Modify some ROM to use RamDisk as a storage medium." makes me hopeful.
Unfortunately, for novice like me it ends there. I don't know how modify ROMS, or any place where i can get it done. Even if i get one, i don't know how to load it. Tutorials did not help much, they were just too much technical. I may be a odd one in this developer forum, but this is only place where i think i can get the answer. I am just looking for PDA that is just equvialent to my XDA II and XDA mini
Many Thanks for your response

HTC Touch Cruise very very slow to start up

hi guys, i have an htc touch cruise, its about 15 months old now. Its totally standard and i have not tried upgrading it, however it has become really really slow to start up lately. This morning i still could not phone anyone after 5 minutes, and it froze once! is there anything i can do to speed this up? i have an 8gb memory card in it with about 4gb of music, would this affect it? cheers for any help!
i forgot to add thats it actually an O2 Orbit II branded variant
What's your memory status? How much free device memory you have?
Maybe it's time to uninstall some software, or even hard reset device - remember, it's Windows...
see this is what i am thinking, fecking windows! this is my first XDA, so i just assumed, like my laptop, it will need re-installing once a year!!!! ha ha!
i might just take the opportunity to upgrade to wm6.1, good idea?!
If your Polaris is on 6.0 Pro, I don't suggest upgrade...

Why on earth not? Just curious what your position is.
Usually the newer 6.1/6.5 OS will is a lot more improved that the outdated 6.0. My vote definitely goes for upgrading your phone, it'll fix all your problems.(unless its a hardware issue)
My points are all written in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=411883&highlight=Bodisson&page=13
In short:
- iGo 2006 stopped working
- problems syncing with more than one PC
- slower
- more battery consumption
There's more, but these 4 are my main reasons.

TyTn ii upgrade

hi guys, im currently useing the TyTn ii, unbranded and unlocked, so im useing o2 UK (payandgo)
it is currently on wm6.1 Pro does anyone know how to upgrade the rom to maybe wm 6.5 or 7?
I cannot post my email address but if you look on my profile, it should be listed. so if anyone could possible help me, that would be great.
i do have a number of issues with this phone atm
The main problem is that my sd memeory card will only regester with the phone when i tilt it, in the memory program, then if i turn the handset off/ i have to do it all again, so im abit hesitant on weather i can run apps / software from it.
i do like this phone alot, but can see myself selling it soon, so if you are intrested it buying it, feel free to make me an offer llf!
Cheers homies.
