3G? - General Questions and Answers

Is 3G software or hardware? In otherwords, Can a GSM PDA phone edition be converted to 3G? If 3G works with GPRS, why not?
Therefore will we soon see a 3G SD card similar to a Wi-Fi card?
Is there a XDA or i-Mate 3G on the cards any time soon?
Thanks
calli

3G or UTSM is a new network the name is because it's the 3th generation of wireless phone networks
the first ones were analog much like directed walktalky's really
2th one was gsm and CDMA
.....
so no it's not software
it operates on a different frequency band
and yes 3g phones are backward compatible so they also works
when there is no 3g service reach
this is the upcomming xda 4 device which support 3g
http://www.edbpriser.dk/Listprices.asp?ID=94253
what 3g really offer that 2g dont is
video phonening
and much much faster datatransfers

Hmmmm...that looks like a printer to me
I have a 3G data pcmcia card from Orange and I have also tried Vodaphones one.
I'm not impressed with the speed.
It keeps being touted as "broadband for your phone", but it's nowhere near there yet. I have yet to see it reach ISDN speeds.

3G on XDA?

Hi all,
Sorry if this seems a dull question but ........
I have an XDA1 and wonder whether I can use it on the 3G network? If not, how about the XDAII?
My present phone is a Motorola A920 using the 3G network but I'd got used to my XDA and prefer it!
My XDA1 has been unlocked.
Many thanks
John
Have you found out any news about using the 3G network on the XDA or XDA II? I have an XDA II and would find it intresting if there was software update or somthing like that
The XDA1 and XDA2 does not work on 3G networks (UMTS) as the frequency is different and the transceiver in the 1 & 2 does not support this.
There is though a new XDA3 on the market which supports 3G, but I dont know where it is available.
I think you will find that a 3G XDA has not been released as yet. for information on XDA III (name may cause confusion in O2 camp, re 2nd article) see:
http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/htc-blue-angel-en.shtml
http://techdigestuk.typepad.com/tech_digest/2004/07/xda3_or_is_that.html
my xda works on a 3 sim, but takes about a minute to find network. it roams to o2. can't sms.
when ever 3g phones cant reach a utms signal it just use gsm of cause only for talk
so there should be no problems using a 3g sim since it will just work as a normal gsm sim in a non utms phone
but i'm prettty sure that they dont offer grps roaming
software can never make a xda1-3 or any other non utms phone a utms phone just like an old 56K modem cant be software upgraded to a cabel modem
I would love to have 3G Network. Their data connection is as fast as 144kbps DSL speed. That's much faster than GSM network.
I'm playing in the field of 32kbps with GSM network. Blah, you call that the speed of DSL as they say? Right.
I have an XDA 1 which works just fine with my 3 sim BUT I cannot send SMS only receive, don't know why and haven't found anyone on this forum who can explain why.
SIM Manager doesnt work either, just says SIM is busy. Try again in 5 seconds but I could wait a month of Sundays and the SIM is still busy.
messing around with my xda1 last night, which has an o2 and a 3 sim in it. had the 3 sim selected, made a new work connection called Three, apn: three.co.uk, username: netservices. pressed connect AND IT DID!! BUT tried to access web and then wap, NO JOY. all other settings are for o2 payandgo online. when i had 3 sim in 3 phone i DIDN'T have to be in a 3g area to access all 3 services. any ideas if i can get any transfer going through xda? plus my new 3sim has arrived, NOT putting that in just yet!!!
3g or UTMS is not supported in many places and when you get out of their range their just do gsm and grps
there should not be a problem getting the services of 3g to work but you dont get the speed because you are not getting utms signal just be having sim it's on a different set of frequencies
there are CF and maybe SD cards out there which act as utms modems which can give a pda a nice internet speed boost though
yeah i know i won't get any extra speed, but it did connect to GPRS via the 3 sim, yes i know it was roaming to o2, the thing is i still want to see what i can get it to do. if i could get it to view FULL internet even at GPRS speeds, for NO charge then that would be good. my 3 package is 3togo, no monthly fee, no free mins, you only pay for what you use,you get a bill later.
You weren't technically roaming with o2.
Three uses o2 as a carrier network for 2.5G communications.
I've tried a Three SIM in my XDA II with similar results to you. However, i've noticed that in the latest XDA II o2 ROM upgrade, they install video calling applications.
I'll keep you posted - I work for Three so I know the details

Also, it could be a matter of smsc centre being incorrectly configured when the 3 sim is placed in the XDA device

Guys,
Don't keep your 3 usims in 2G handsets for very long. If 3 notice you are constantly roaming on o2 they *will* block the SIM.
Did anyone end up find out if you can actually sms with a Three sim in it ?

Nah. There's a video mms application and you can also download or stream short video clips but these are all gprs services. Video calling is a 3g only service and no xda device has the hardware/software for that yet.

Touch Cruise, HSDPA, Tmobile, US or EU?

I recently purchased an HTC Touch Cruise from phonesource-USA without doing my homework. (What can I say, I was overwhelmed by the coolness of the phone). Before this phone, I was using an Excalibur and a Titan from HTC. I think I already know the answer to this question, but wanted to ask the home experts out there.
I absolutely love this phone, but am I screwed on 3G when T-Mobile releases it this year?
P.S. I'm located in the U.S.

T-Mobile USA Will use 1700mHz band for 3G and according to some sources it will use 2100mHz to. Witch T-Mobile say it will not have full experience of there 3G. But it will work.
And i think it will be possible to use Radio from Sony X1 witch have same Chip sets and everything except screen.
AT&T 3G
I think I may be in the same boat. I did read up on the phone before I bought it to work on At&t's 3G network. Even thought the phone operates on 1900mghz I have not been able to get it working. It always is on the Edge network.

are you saying you have not been able to get the phone to work on att's 3G network? i've read on howard forums where other owners are seeing the "H" and "3G", suggesting that others have been able to connect...
3G
That's exactly what I am saying. I have had it configured to the correct frequency for AT&T's 3G since I turned it on. The very first time I put it on 1900 MGHZ I did see a H and then a G, but I'm sure the G was for GSM.

When you say "configured to the correct frequency for att's 3G", did you manually set the Band to 1900 mHz? or do you have it set to Automatic? for all my HTC devices that support 3G, i set the Band to Automatic and it will pick up and use the att 3G/H band automatically. i only see the "H" when i'm tethered to my laptop or downloading a 1 meg + file.
att 3g
I did it manually. I figured it wouldn't work on auto. I will try the auto detect and see what happens.
3g is up
Well it says G right now, but not 3G. I know I have crappy reception here so maybe it will change. Thanks though.
yep... having good HSDPA/UMTS coverage is a must to access the network. if it says "G", you're using GPRS, "E", you're using Edge, "3G", you're using UMTS, "H" you're using HSDPA. you might check att's website to see if you have high-speed coverage in your location. every HTC 3G capable device (e.g., supports Triband HSDPA) that i've purchased has always connected to att's network with the "Auto" Band setting...

Ah this sucks. Why can't America just use the same frequencies as the rest of the world. I don't want to have to purchase another expensive phone right after purchasing this one. Looks like a Sony X1 will eventually be in my future
Thanks for the reply.
3G???
I had it on auto all day, but no little 3G icon. I know there is coverage, becuase my TYTN and even my blackjack picked it up right away. I guess I'll just keep looking..........
AT&T 3G
I am usually indicating 3G or H. I have it set to auto and it semms to be working fine for me.

I too have found you need to leave the phone set to Auto. A soft reset after you change it from manual selection to auto gets me the 3G back immediately on boot up.
ATT 3G
I have ATT 3G & H in some areas when I travel but my home area does not have 3G coverage only EDGE at the moment. It depends on ATT's coverage whether you will get 3G or H. The phone is fully capable to work with ATT.
got my Orbit 2 today, and HSDPA & UMTS are working fine (in dallas)...
using a polaris with at&t in buffalo, ny. 3g and HSPDA work fine in most areas. sometimes if i go deep within a building it will swtich to edge which is normal.
3G!

Same thing with T-Mobile TP2 on AT&T network. Compare Rogers and Telus 3G bands. It might be different.

lol yeah I think so. I think its called 1x or something like that. I'm not very familiar with the CDMA phones but they advertise that you can use the phone to surf 3G speeds on their network so I'm pretty sure they have 3G speeds.
Sorry, but i'm using TELUS and the HSPA network won't be up till next year and trust me, Telus speeds now are NOTHING close to 3G.
I'm not sure how they are advertising these 3G speeds but 1x is actually slower than what Telus is currently using which is EVDO.

i dont think thats true at all. i get speeds of up to 2.8mg downlink and 500k up.
ive downloaded while tethering upwards up 300kb/s. you might be in an area with 1x coverage, and not EVDO. PLUS make sure the device you are using isnt just EVDO, it has to be EVDO REV A. (touch pro, diamond, touch pro 2, touch, etc). Hope you get better speeds. CHears
Telus EVDO is not slow. Unfortunately the HDPA network is not up yet but it should be online VERY soon as the Olympics are drawing close and this is the reason why Telus is upgrading the network before Feb. 2010 here in Vancouver.

Where the heck are you located?? I'm using a TP2 with full EV signal and i'm getting 400-600k and that's in the downtown core. And from what telus tells me thats the best they can do till they put the HSPA network up. They said CDMA is only capable of 7-750k max, there is no getting over that. But i'd love to know how your getting 2.8 meg, because technically thats roughly 2100k faster than what telus says we can get.
And Jessie is right Telus has a goal to sell phones during the olympics and they plan to have the HSPA up by then.
Yup I'm pretty sure I saw Telus advertising their high speed somewhere
im using a physical sim-card thingy to allow other sim cards to work in my telus TP2, it works (since it does not give me the regular error and i can see the numbers in it), but how do I stop it from using CDMA and go on GSM only?
Guys
I'm hoping you can help us no CDMA users with this question.
Considering that the CDMA TP2 has both GSM and CDMA radios, can I pop in a GSM SIM CARD and enjoy full GSM coverage including use of Asia and European 3G bands?

Yes you can use it on GSM networks. If you want to use the phone on a SIM other that the company's provided sim you need to sim-unlock it. The 3G will work in Asia and Europe but not in North AMerica because the bands are different and the TP2 supports those of Asia and Europe only (the North American CDMA version).

It is quadband gsm.... works on all continents.... provided it is unlocked or you are paying for global roaming.
hello guys, im going to purchase verizon tp2 cause they say it supports gsm and cheaper than the generic nonbranded version. tmobile's design i dislike. so as im going to use it only with gsm sim, i have such questions, are there any differences in use between gsm and vzw versions except i must select gsm mode? can i flash it with generic tp2 roms?
........
okay, seems to be cdma versions cant be flashed to gsm as it is another model id(rhod400 and rhod500)
so i have one more question, will i be able to use internet on vzw tp2 without any restrictions on its stock rom now, when hardspl have not been released yet?
Just to be sure I understand if I want to buy a TP2 in Canada...
The Telus version will not be able to use GSN (Fido/Rogers) 3G network because the 3G bands are not the same as the TP2 from the United-States and Europe?
If so, would this version of the TP2 work with Fido/Rogers GSM 3g ?

I dont think so. I dont think there's a PRO 2 that supports our North American 3G bands.. At least not yet.. For the question above. Yes it is GSM quadband but not 3G quadband. This is different. It is 3G dualband and supports those of Asia and Europe only. Unfortunately.
That's a good and clear answer! Thx !
No problem. I think when and if AT&T or some North American GSM carrier releases the TP2, then the 3G will definitely work here in NA. Otherwise the current versions only support Asia and Europe.
Another question, can we install a custom ROM on the worldphone telus Touch Pro 2 like the other GSM phones? (I dont think so but I found two opposite answers on this forum).

US Cellular TP2 works with ATT 3G?

As the title reads out, I was wanting to know if the USCC TP2 will ever work on 3G because Edge is getting a little slow... I have seen the "G" up on my bar before but quickly goes away, so that leads me to believe that it could be possible.
Also, I heard that hardware is compatible with the 3G network. So please, could someone that knows more into this tell me if anything will work or even MIGHT work?
Thank you so much!

i would also like to know because i just unlocked the us cellular touch pro 2 for use on att. but when i try the internet it just says dialed 777 failed
Hey, in order for that dialed 7777 error to go away, you need to add ATT internet settings instead of the original carrier settings.
So do this...
Go to your Data Connection options
Add New Connection
Then Put this in for the info:
wap.cingular for the APN
[email protected] - username
CINGULAR1 - password
That should work, of course there is an ATT data cab somewhere, but thats how you set it up manually, I hope this helped!

G = GPRS
E = EDGE
G = Slower than EDGE and nothing to do with 3G.
You're not going to get that phone to work on ATT 3G/UMTS. The band support simply isn't there.

Based on phonearena's tech specs though the TP2 cant even reach full 3g on verizon's network. Here is the link to some verizon phones:

Same shows true for both sprint and AT&T versions as well.

The phone has 3g capability, it is not accessing the full power of the network due to hardware though. If AT&T nerfs their non-iPhones to EDGE then that is what you will max at. If you look at the palm pixi or pre it has faster data speeds because of the hardware. In other words i'm not really sure if faster speeds are capable (due to hardware restrictions) and on AT&T i'm even more unsure because of how their apple contract is structured.
Ah that sounds really crazy! Lol, I wish things were simple. And now, I am noticing my Multimedia Messages aren't going though, I am not sure what that is from though. Anyone have a clue on that?

What are you talking about? The CDMA TP2 can very well reach 3G speed (EVDO Rev A) on Sprint and Verizon. It'll also reach 3G speed on European WCDMA/UMTS networks. The ATT TP will reach 3G speed on ATT and European WCDMA/UMTS networks.
The statement above doesn't make any sense.

All that's required is that you use a version of the phone on a network with a compatible band. The ATT, TMO, Sprint, VZW, etc. TP2s will all reach 3G ontheir respective networks with no problem. When used on other networks the phones may or may not have support for the 3G band used by the network. If it doesn't have the band support then it's not going to work.

It is simple. Stupid simple.
If you want 3G you buy the version of the phone that supports the 3G band that your carrier is using.
As far as MMS, you need to make sure that your account is data enabled and that your phone has the data settings for your carrier loaded.
I found a cab that worked for my ATT MMS settings, that was no problem, but like I stated, I have a US Cellular TP2, so it is not a Tilt 2 (ATT) or I would not be posting in the CDMA section of the TP2 forums.
As far as I know the US Cellular device (TP2) has the hardware requirements of ATT 3G network, and I am asking why will it not work up to 3G speeds? Only thing I could think of is that there is not a specific radio for this yet, or something... because the specs of the USC TP2 does in fact work with the 3G bands of ATT.
So what is stopping the device from connecting to it?

According to all of the hardware specs, none of the TP2 CDMA variants support the 3G bands used by ATT. It will not work because it is simply not compatible.
If you want to use it in Europe or Japan, you'll get 3G. But as far as using it in the US on ATT or TMO, you're only going to get EDGE speeds because those are the only US bands that it supports.
The only versions of the TP2 that support ATT's 3G bands are the ATT version and (if launched) the Australian GSM version. The CDMA versions, the Euro version and the TMO US version will not support ATT 3G.

All the specs I read, the Verizon CDMA phone supports Quad band GSM
GSM Quad-band phone capable of global roaming (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
CDMA dual band (1900/800 MHz)
UMTS European/Asian 3G (2100 MHz)
Does this not cover the 3G bands ATT uses? I thought it was 1900?

GSM = GPRS (2G) and EDGE (2.5G)
UMTS = 3G
ATT uses GSM 850/1900 for 2G/2.5G and UMTS/WCDMA 850/1900 for 3G.
If you use a CDMA Touch Pro 2 on ATT it'll work on 2G/2.5G (since it is compatible) but it won't work on 3G since the band support isn't there.
If ATT used UMTS 2100 it would work.
so will the US Cellular TP2 ever be able to get 3G from ATT network? or will it always be limited to Edge?

TMo US uses UMTS 2100 for 3G so you should be able to get 3G on TMo but not ATT.

TMO US uses UMTS 1700.
While it technically uses both 1700 and 2100 channels, UMTS 1700 is not the same as UMTS 2100 (used in Europe).
So no, the Sprint TP2 won't use UMTS 2100 on TMO US. It'll just use Edge. Now TMO UK (or anywhere in Europe) it'll get 3G because there they use UMTS 2100.
so there is no way???
i was checking ht cell and in the bands it says umts 850 but nothing happens thats too bad. it lloks like im gonna have to buy a at&t one to be able to work

jiayu g2

Purchased a Jiayu g2 to play with so far the phone is very nice. It is suppose to work with 850/900/1900/2100mhz wcdma however I cannot get it to work on 3g with att I only get edge and have tried just about every apn setting I can. Does anyone else in the US have this phone working on 3g? I have it rooted. Funny never thought I would say this but it is a very nice phone.

A lot of these Chinese phones state they're quadband GSM, but only have 2100 for 3G. Correct me if I am wrong.
Also, do you accidentally have GSM Only set?

here is the link for google translate.

this is the manufactures website and in the product parameters tab it shows 850/900/1900/2100 wcdma 3g and even in the engineermode menu it has them listed. i only paid 160 for it but to be honest it is a real nice phone and i was completely shocked at how well it was constructed. i even have it rooted. if there is anyone else out there that has this phone in the US or anywhere i would be interested to find out what bands you are on.
Take a look at the specshere
It shows 2100MHz for 3G
Don't be fooled by Engineering mode. It may show the options for specific MHz, but if the phone doesn't support it then the options pointless and misleading.

i hear what you are saying. but the fact that the manufacture website shows the bands. i understand that the selling sites are all diff some show 2100 some show 850/2100. but for 160 it was worth a shot.
So no one else in north America has this phone?
Hi,
I have heard that MTK6575 SoC does support 3G on 850MHz/1900MHz. Two things might prevent it from working.
1. Your cellular provider maynot be providing 3G on both 850 and 1900 where you live. It could just be on 1900MHz where you live. Could you go to some other part of the city and test it?
2. I have read that the antennae required for 850/1900MHz is different from 2100MHz. So, even if the SoC supports it, the signal strength is not strong enough to make it work.
I would be very interested in your test results since I am thinking of buying one.

Hi! Did you insert your 3G SIM on the SIM 1 slot? It is the only SIM slot capable of 3G (WCDMA). There are two slots in Jiayu G2 and only SIM 1 will work with 3G. SIM 2 is for GSM only.
